Dear Michael, I just wanted to say THANK YOU EVER SO VERY MUCH! I`m drawing with pencils ever since I was a little kid, but I never used colors. a few years back, I found this video on youtube and watched it several times. you made painting look so easy- so I had to try. I realy did try, and today, thanks to you I`m painting with oil paints (I even saled some of my paintings) so once again- thank you very much for driving me into this. Dor.
@MajChung add a thin coat of linseed oil to the canvas before you start then the paint will glide across the canvas. make sure you use a ultra thin coat and do not let it dry before you start. Regards, Michael
I am actually quite at ease with his instructional video. We all learn from each other...and this gentleman definitely learned and became his own. I see an artist named Michael Thompson, inspired by painting..nothing more. Stop comparing and learn to appreciate his dedication.
Michael thank you so much. I have been painting for a while but I was never taught the basic or even how to use some of the strokes or techniques your doing. Lately I felt like ive lost my ways but your videos are really helping me gain confidence as a true artist. Thank you.
I have a passion for art. Don't think it comes to me naturally as it does most. Watching your tutorials has added to the little knowledge of painting that I have and it has ignited my love to get into it and start painting right now. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Michael is a very good painter, had a chance to see some of his painting in person.they are awesome..I'm from the same state Michael from, good Old Georgia..hope one day to do a painting with him...Damon Cash
I probably watched this close to a hundred times or more! Its interesting and relaxing to see the painting unfold, while listening to the voice and the bristles :)!
why is everyone trying to compare him to bob. he is his own individual doing what he loves. stop hating. if you cant do any better making videos dont talk.
Your logic is flawed. This type of thinking can be applied to everyone. "Why is everyone trying to compare him to Hitler. He is his own individual doing what he loves. Stop hating. If you can't make a better holocaust, don't talk."
I feel the most efficient way to learn drawing or painting is to watch someone who is good at it actually draws and paints! And get more personal instruction in a case-based situation. Good video!
Man, I love your videos they really help me out. Our art teacher just tells us to paint with watercolor, then we move on to acrylics and oils. But she doesn't really teach, just tells us to do it. I had no idea these were the types of brushes you needed, I've basically been looking at walmart because there's no art stores here. Now I've got a better picture of what I need, and the techniques to use. Thanks so much!
Very, very nice. I went out and bought a $ 50 kit from Hobby Lobby today to try oil painting because if your video. Considering I cannot even draw stick people correct, I was walking through your 4 videos step-by-step and found out I could do it with your help. Thank you so much for the video, tips, 40% Hobby Lobby coupon link, and your great artwork.
This is an excellent painting instructional video. This man is very skilled. I feel that the cloud when he first creates it, looks like a powerful basketball player blocking a shot.
I find this Bob Ross style of painting is alright for the hobbiest but for a serious painter you've got to learn to paint without the clear coat, magic white'
Your very talented, I love art so I asked my mom for art supplies and we got oil paints. People keep on telling me they are pretty hard to use..this is very helpful. Thank u.
i didnt know nothing about painting, oil painting, palette, knife palette, bla bla bla, etc, etc. But sometimes ago i bought a book A Lust for Life that is the Van Gogh biography, more of accidental event for me, because i love reading, whatever the book it is. And because of that book, i came to this channel. And its a good experience by the way, to see how a painter works...
I realize this video is old now, but thanks for posting it anyway! It's hard to find useful painting videos on UA-cam. And also, as a Southerner who is currently living outside the U.S. your accent was a very welcome surprise.
Thank you for the great videos! I have only painted with watercolors before but want to get into oils. Your videos showed me how I need to modify my thought process. Lots of valuable techniques here.
This is good as clouds or contrails are the new age cloud. Trying to do old style clouds can be hardest thing to paint for me. Thankyou I can loosen up with confidence.
Thanks so much.....helping me to start painting again..I think...wow....you are a great teacher.............to make such heaven..clouds..seemed so easy..but have to try a few times I think.......before my result become like yours.....awesome..wow....buy some canvas and begin...yes......you are a great inspirator to many ..who think ..I am not able to..but we all have just to try..use our own imagination..............Many hugs from..
right, Michael, goin; out in the garden to try my first ever painting! Will let you know how I get along. Have no linseed oil... will use something else. Have two hours of daylight left... Thanks a million, brilliant lesson, enjoyed it tremendously. You're an excellent teacher. Warmest regards, Lyn
Excellent stuff! just bought my first set of beginnerstuff and im ready to go! Gonna be awesome! This is just what i need! You make it look very easy...
Great video thank you so much for sharing! This really has given me back my confidence to put paint to canvas after many years of artistic constipation. ;)
i'm about to start using oil paints, have been stuck on acrylic before - i'm really excited - and you make it look easy, it's probably very difficult though :P
I also followed Bob Ross and Bill Alexander since I was a little boy and I love to paint I watch many because everyone is a little different and it helps me grow thank you 🙏🏻 for this video I find myself taking lots of pictures now do you also take a lot of pictures
Hi Michael, Thanks for your quick replies. I am using the Winsor and Newton brand of oil paint and some of the tubes are labeled Winson and some are labeled Artisan. I got them at Michaels.
when I used them, I would scrape off the paint with a palette knife first, then use a paper towel dipped in paint thinner. (kinda messy but that is how I would do it) you can use freezer paper from wal-mart I use it often because it is so easy to clean up.
@xearbooks yes when you use oil paint you need some sort of cleaner, water and soap will not clean the same as a thinner, I Use Turpenoid, it is a turpentine substitute. with no odor you want to use an artist grade of thinner. But there are all kinds of paint thinners and cleaners out there. hope this helps, Michael
@smatal White medium it acts as a lighting agent to the colors you add to the canvas. It's main reason is to keep the canvas wet so you can blend colors easily. it is needed for wet on wet painting technique. Regards, Michael
@CeeDeeWhite yes Liquin will dry faster than linseed oil so if you want to take your time use linseed oil. as far as thin liquin does a great job I use turpenoid mixed with linseed oil. regards, Michael
@LpJunior537 yes I use liquid white or Magic White by Alexander. Remember your bottom color that you are applying the highlight to needs to be thicker consistency than the top layer. Add few drops of paint thinner I use turpenoid to slightly thin your highlight color, usually what causes mud mixing is when you use two colors of the same consistency. oh yeah do not over work the area or you will lose your texture "detail" unless you want it to be soft. Regards, Michael
you can use liquid white which is a Bob Ross medium,or use magic white it is a Bill Alexander Medium.apply one of these with a very thin even coat that is what I mean by wet, do not let it dry before starting to paint. Regards, Michael
Bob Ross was not a professional painter in the sense I think you're suggesting. He taught a handful of gimmick techniques. Fantastic for getting people to paint who were otherwise too intimidated to, but not one bit for going beyond the absolute most basic landscapes. Don't come back and accuse me of hating on Ross, either. I'm not. But it is nonetheless a fact that his technique was good ONLY as a starting point. It did not and will not help a painter to progress. It's good only for a very limited series of monotonous landscapes.
@@robinnelsen7869 well atleast "getting people to paint" is a very tough job. And boy oh boy he did a job well done. People like us will always remember him as our inspiration to paint. And whatever you say... He made his mark in this field. Now he's gone, so like I was saying whatever you say, it won't change the fact that Bob Ross will be remembered. Have a good day ahead my friend.
it is the pigments and the binding agents they contain linseed oil for example if you leave linseed oil outby itself to dry takes it a pretty good while. about a few days... :-)
@LpJunior537 yes I use liquid white, or alexander Magic White, remember this, you need to use a firm oil paint to apply the base color or shadow color. your highlights need to be thinned slightly so it will stick to the top of the base paint without mixing mud. usually what causes mud is your highlights are the same consistency as your base color. oh yeah do not over work the area or it will lose its texture "detail". Regards, Michael

After witnessing the end result of every step, I went "Unbelievable!"
You make it seem so simple, and it all turns out so brilliant.

The blue color of the sky is just beautiful. The trees are so very much Corot's stile.
Love your sense of humor Michael...your pass on some great pointers that will help me allot.
I have always used acrylic paints. as soon as you started laying on the blue I said omg I love oils! Im really excited to try them out now!
this is one of the only guys on youtube that i think that should make more tutorials on how tom paint, thank you.
I probably watched this close to a hundred times or more!

Aperturee well your logic is flawed as well....what exactly does hitler have to do with this?
Everything he has said and everything he's doing is almost identical to bob. Thats why people are comparing it...
sant_ maris this guy isn’t doing his own thing at all, he’s literally running his video exactly like bob ross, except not as good

linseed oil and other mediums help thin the oil paint to get certain effects "like fine detail"
