I hear what yer saying but have to ask what technique is commonly used today that wasn't commonly used in 07 that woulda prevented Overeem getting KOd in the same position by the same shot if both were at the same stage in their careers today ? In this fight I don't think technique is the issue, I think its the self belief of Shogun & the courage to take the risk of throwing the big shot. Perhaps contracted fighters, in particular contracted fighters to a particular promotion that monopolises the sport, have little or no incentive to go out there, take risks, n make wins happen ?

It's entire commitment to one shot, using gravity and the weight of his body on top of the overhand right. It's really poetry and beautiful ground and pound moves like this are what make MMA so great.

He spent his early days at light heavyweight. He's not a natural heavyweight. For some reason, it took him only 4 months to transform his body completely into this heavyweight K1 animal. It took Jon Jones 3 years to put on about the same amount of weight so I reckon they went about it in very different ways.
Jones has pissed hot on numerous occasions, USADA even raised the acceptable levels of of PEDs so that Jones could compete before the UFC ended the partnership with USADA completely. Great fight!!! Perfect shot by Shogun. This was the Pride in Vegas w the modified rules, no stomps or soccer kicks. Shogun & Chute Boxe were killers, and Overeem turned into a superhero a few years after this as a K1 kickboxer & Dream MMA fighter.
They were ALL juicing and the fights were fixed...Pride had more in common with WWE. It was entertainment with predetermined winners and losers....Fedor was nothing but a myth, similar to Goldberg in WCW....a bunch of "wins" to have that "undefeated" champ, but it was FAKE....many of Fedor's opponents have admitted to getting paid to dive.
I met Overeem around that time in a grappling tournament (he grappled a weightclass above me), he was actually good on the ground and allready huge compared to most guys in his weightclass.

What makes this knockout even better was Overeem was controlling the striking exchanges and getting the better of Shogun. He was landing good work in the clinch and stuffing Shoguns takedowns and keeping dominate position, doing a good job of circle and rotating Shogun on the feet to help open up the ring more and control the distance to neutralize Shogun blitz. Goes to show that when you are as elite as prime Shogun, you can’t risk making a mistake. You need to be perfect otherwise he will find a way to expose you

I think he was probably on steroids in PRIDE too. It was a lot easier to do it there (probably almost encouraged) as PRIDE wanted entertainment and wasnt as serious as the UFC (I prefered PRIDE)

I’m gonna be a bit of a cool guy here and say I been on UA-cam since 2006, but just saying that because for the longest ass time PRIDE or someone would either never upload videos of PRIDE MMA fights with Overeem, or the organization would always take them down. It was the craziest thing because by 2008 Alistair was already a K1 God / MMA legend making his way into the American audiences, and you could look up ANY PRIDE FC fights on UA-cam by then. EXCEPT any of them with Alistair. The one I always wanted to see was Chuck Liddell vs Alistair. I remember looking on Wikipedia and seeing Chuck’s MMA record at the time and seeing a W over Alistair and being like “WAIT! THEY FOUGHT???” I’m trying to show off how long I been around, but also wanna say to not take it for granted that you can find this fight so easily on UA-cam now. Hell, I never even knew he fought SHOGUN until now. Just seeing skinny Overeem at LHW (or “middleweight” by PRIDE standards) in his big ol’ orange trunks is fucking insane
