To respond to John’s question to new players who have only played the remakes on if they feel 4 remake was a good escalation to 3, I’ll admit there were times I was absolutely missing the dodge mechanic. There were times where I was more reckless than I should’ve been cause my mind was still in “I can dodge if I’m in real trouble” mode only to obviously be overwhelmed not too long after lmao. Overall though I do think 4 remake was a perfect step forward and I still had so much damn fun playing this game that it not having a dodge button didn't really bother me most of the time.
So one thing I want to talk about the story is that I *really* like how Krauser and Luis are utilized in Leon's personal journey here. Leon's personal conflict has to do with the RC-incident and his government training making him lose the idealism he had as a rookie. Luis embodies that idealism as a fan of Don Quixote, a man who's obsessed with the romantic notions of knighthood. Krauser, being the one who molded Leon into what he is now, symbolically works as the one to kill Luis. It's something I can really appreciate here. I also agree with your assessment on REmake 4 is more of a compliment to the original rather than a replacement.
Kind of funny this decade has been referencing ALOT of Don Quixote as of lately; Like it's almost creeping back into modern culture. (Cause I believe Elden Ring also payed a reference, with a Lance being stuck on the side of a Windmill?)

Everything in this game just feels wrong.
As a new player that got into RE2 and RE3 remakes a few weeks before RE4 remake came out I literally didn't even notice the dodge being gone. The parry pretty much replaced it in my mind
The crouch can dodge things pretty well, certain attacks have context-sensitive dodges, and PC players can just mod a rolling dodge into the game anyway since the "framework" for it still exists in the code to be called whenever.
I’m sure he noticed the charms are the in-game models from the OG 4, but since he didn’t point it out I LOVED that detail. And the shooting gallery was fun if frustrating.
THIS. i loved that the charms were based on the OG models. and i very much agree that the shooting gallery was fun yet frustrating. every time i missed a skull, i raged lmao
The original RE3 had a sidestep that wasn't in any of the other classic RE games, so I don't think it's a problem or mistake to lose it for RE4's remake. The parry feels much better and keeps you closer to the action, so I feel it accomplishes the same gameplay loop as the original RE4. That version was all about forcing you to close the gap and melee, so now the parry lets you do it faster.
Yeah parry is timing on easy and normal difficulty but hardcord and professional difficulty minimize the parry knife techniques. Good part I like having Leon bomber jacket and RPD outfit for Leon is getting a S plus in the Mercenaries mini game for all characters and the selection stages it's about 500 thousands points.
I still can't believe Devil May Cry pulled an Evil Dead/Army of Darkness on us. Where we had the originals, then they decided to reboot it, then they decided "Nah, lets go back to the original story and continue it."
When I heard this was being remade, I was firmly in the camp of those who felt it wasn't needed at all. But damn this game impressed me. Also looking forward to your devil may cry series
Knowing how much Johnny loves this game, I’ve been SO excited for this review. Haven’t been eagerly waiting this much since his Frontiers review. Luckily as a Patreon, I got to see this early. 😏
I’d have loved to see a type of hallucination mechanic ala Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. Saddler could occasionally appear like Alma from F.E.A.R., randomly appearing from the corner of your eye then disappearing. You could also hear whispers from time to time calling out to you. Maybe the fountain pours blood for a few seconds. Maybe a tentacle drags across the floor quickly leaving to show the plaga trying to reach out to you. Ashley could be affected, randomly making her suddenly walk towards the enemy to be taken. She might ask Leon if he’s okay or Leon might check on Ashley. This can all show that Saddler, even if he’s not close to you, still has control. Maybe it might mean, he’s near Leon and Ashley, roaming the area like a tyrant in his own right. Also, why not let you get a free ticket for completing all the missions since by then you should be nearing the final level for your weapon. You could also have an extra ticket somewhere in the world that changes each playthrough and tickets could be sold for money.
We've been getting some pretty amount of great remastered or remake games this year. Metroid Prime, Kirby: Return to Dreamland, Advance Wars and now Resident Evil 4. 1:46 Wow! I can't believe Capcom announced its 10-year plan for the Resident Evil series just as Johnny finished his sentence. Coincidences are crazy like that...
Regarding the dodge mechanic from RE3 and whether I prefer it or the knife parry from RE4, I definitely prefer the parry. To me, it just feels a lot more satisfying, hearing that sound of the knife making whatever it hit bounce back, especially when it comes to the molotovs.
Coming from someone who has played the original RE1-5 and all the remakes, regarding the lack of the RE3R dodge, I _do_ miss it. It's certainly not a big loss in RE4R (Leon has plenty of combat options as it is) but, despite my overall indifference toward RE3R, against certain enemies, like Nemesis, the dodging felt great! I feel weird suggesting this, considering that I think RE should still have horror as a priority, but I'd love to have an entry that includes the remake dodges and parries. It doesn't have to be a mainline title but those mechanics feel so satisfying that I'd love to see them brought together in some fashion.
Honestly a little surprising, I played it front to back about seven times, with another 3(?) unfinished playthroughs, in about two weeks. And I freaking _hate_ RE4 Remake. I'm honestly a tad surprised people who actually like it don't play even more than me, not dismissive or anything, just mildly surprised.
Johnny, to have fun with Luis in Mercenaries, build up your Mayhem Mode meter then everytime you use it, you drop dynamite at your feet which gives you ample I frames to completely negate fatal attacks. You can shoot it to detonate it early and use it for crowd control. Once it's detonated you can place as many as you can detonate before Mayhem Mode runs out. They do no damage to you but insane damage to enemies and kill bosses in one or two uses. Luis is actually ridiculous. Do running melees for shoulder charge instead of the pipe since it's faster. The man is a menace.
As for the dodge mechanic, I feel it did not need to be here. Seeing as Leon can duck under lots of attacks such as grabs or hatchets, you still have some ability to dodge certain attacks without sacrificing the durability of your knife, if you are skilled enough. The game doesn't tell you this except for the scythe enemies and certain boss fights, and I kind of appreciate that. I think it makes repeat playthroughs far more rewarding to master this and, while it isn't nearly as reliable as it was in RE3, it feels way better to pull off. It gives an extra layer to those split second decisions and I think it makes the combat feel a lot more interesting.
Agreed. There’s nothing more satisfying than executing a perfectly timed crouch in this and barely dodging a hatchet to the face or a grab in a crowd of enemies. The parrying itself is insanely gratifying to get good with too.
This is a great remake. I love how they didn’t just update the graphics, they actually added some stuff too. One of my favorite changes is how they got rid of some of the quick time events and changed the cheese spots from the original lol
@@jdude9314 So far Nintendo didn't show Metroid Prime 4 trailer of Samus gameplay and what going to take place in. So we have to wait until Nintendo Direct comes out of June.
I was hoping for a return to Final Fantasy next, but hearing that the next marathon is Devil May Cry has me just as excited. Still waiting on a Spyro review.
The fact that they replaced that Krauser QTE BS cutscene with an actual boss fight (in fact, they got rid of most QTEs outside of combat) makes this the superior game to me. The Salazar statue was particular aggravating to me, because, when I played the Switch version, the QTEs glitched out and require me to mash the button twice as fast: I simply couldn't mash fast enough and was stuck in a dead game.
It’s not a one-time glitch, it's a direct result of the 60 FPS option of the HD ports of RE4 which completely messes up certain game elements. You have to be twice as fast when mashing if you play on the PS4, Steam, Xbox and Switch versions of RE4. Plus I seem to remember that QTEs are sped-up on professional even in the old versions of the game (GC, PS2, Wii etc.) so you have an unintended AND an intended disadvantage.
I'm an old school RE player that loves the hell out of the new games, but I can say one of the difficult things adjusting to when playing a lot of one game then switching to the other is the changes in defensive options. I kept wanting to do Ethan's block and push when first playing RE4 Remake, and when playing RE8 in third person at first I really wanted to dodge.
I was not fully clicking with the combat in early parts of the village. I was a bit too use to the invincibility frames and stunning enemies much easier in the original. I also found that enemies tended to get unstunned faster than expected, the window to melee is not as long. But after getting use to those changes and getting a better handle on the Parry mechanic, it really clicked and I was enjoying the hell out of the game.
6:39 what's funny is that the backstory in this game is from that side game. (For anyone wondering what that game is, it's called "the darkside chronicles".)
Bro! I said the same thing about Krauser when I heard him! He definitely gives off Ocean dub Vegeta vibes! I also heavily missed the dodge mechanic from RE3 but if I'm being honest, it would break the game. A cool compromise if they decide to do RE5R would be to give Sheva a dodge (like Jill), and Chris a parry.
If I can make a confession, I'm not really in love with the original Resi4 (although I did try it and get into the franchise because of your review, thanks again Johnny). Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but maybe since I didn't grow up with it, it doesn't quite jive with it. But this remake really did. Love the more tense atmosphere (god the Regenrators are somehow even more terrifying), LOVE the increased focus on Ashley and Luis, and still has the fun gameplay with enough new mechanics to spice things up.
You absolutely described my experience with the dodge mechanic. I love this game but being someone who was introduced to the early RE games through these remakes I frequently (and frustratingly) took unnecessary damage because I hit the dodge button (but didn't dodge).
Yes! Thanks Johnny! Been waiting for this Vs video:) I’ve already ran through this game 8 times and counting! I’ve also unlocked everything for the Main Story and now I’m patiently awaiting the PSVR 2 Version to release! Keep up the awesome work on these videos Johnny! 😎 (Sorry about the rambling, I got Super excited when I seen this video pop up on my feed)
Wished Johnny mentioned those funny anime shorts Capcom did for the RE4 remake. I think they were called "Leon and Ashley in the mysterious village" or something, quite cute.
I'm going to be honest, there is one thing that makes the remake better for me hands down: Full subtitles and captions. For some reason, even though there's a subtitle option in the menus, the original game just does not have them. The option is greyed out. I have really bad audio processing difficulties that make games without subs really difficult to play, so- that's a big plus in my book.
Glad to see you enjoyed it. I also beat the game twice in a row (I wanted to get the infinite rocket launcher the second go around) and mostly enjoyed the game. Is it better than the original, I don't know but I do agree with you on most of your points. However I too was not happy with the ammo situation, in the original it's mostly good with giving you ammo, but the remake is way more stingy with ammo even on normal difficulty. I was definitely starving for ammo at various points and scouring for every treasure I could find. Also screw the special weapons in this game because the requirements for getting them are ridiculous. The infinite rocket launcher I mentioned earlier costs $2 MILLION pesetas unlike the original and it took forever to gather enough money to buy it. Also the handcannon, Chicago Typewriter and infinite ammo unlocks are beyond insane like beating the game on Professional mode with an S+ rank. Forget that, I'd rather just download a mod to unlock the infinite weapons (I bought the game on PC). Now I'm officially caught up on all the mainline RE games (except for the original PS1 games) and would love to see where the series goes from here.
Okay, so I haven't even finished the video, but the moment you mentioned DBZ, and *especially* towards the quote at 6:00, my mind *INSTANTLY* went to TFS...and thus I mentally responded with "Yeah, more like pure, unadulterated ego." XD
Oh yes, Johnny, I've been waiting for your Resident Evil 4 Remake VS video. I'm glad to see you enjoy the remake of the game (RE4RM). You can always play the original if you didn't like the remake.
Yeah Stealth killed enemies with a knife without wasting ammo for your guns. Work on normal enemies and pig guys that have tanking health but doesn't work on the Chainsaw enemies of a Stealth killed.
The costumes in the original are visible in cutscenes in every version except for PS2. It did not have enough power for real-time cutscenes, so they have used FMVs instead.
19:50 To answer your question John, as someone who's only played the remakes. I liked the dodge and shove feature that Jill and Carlos had. I wish Ashley had it during her section of the game
15:41 that’s literally all they had to say to sell the game. Also super beyond hyped for you to play Devil May Cry, as it’s my favorite game series ever so I hope you enjoy it.
Honestly I wouldn’t mind them remaking re 1 again in the re engine with new stuff (black tiger) will scare the heck out of me also 6 with a new tone that the remakes have and with a lot of changes
When this game came out, i got it as a gift and i decided to finally fully dive into the resident evil series. Id only played Revelations on my 3ds years ago funny enough but i really liked it. So i played the OG re4 and just finished re2. Im LOVING both. I think i’ll play 5 next, then 1,6,3, CV. The most random order i know lol. But then i’m gonna play the remakes 1-4. Then 7,8. An obsession has begun
It's good to hear someone praise this game. Even for it's more controversial mechanics. I've seen a surprising amount of negativity around the game. Like yeah everybody loves what was only improved. And misses what was taken out and I get it. But what we got in return isn't bad. Yeah I hate hate the durability to. But as Johnny said. It had to be balanced in some way and there are alternatives. Some guy said he spent at least half of his cash just repairing the knife. To which I say. Were you EXCLUSIVELY using the main knife and not shooting or using kitchen knives? And were you not combining treasures to sell to the merchant? He said he hated the quests for being the most boring uninspired typical crap. Which yeah fair. But ITS EASY MONEY! Money you can use to make this stuff less of an issue. Resident evil has A L W A Y S been a RESOURCE MANAGEMENT GAME! If you can't spend wisely or know when to use something else i'm sorry but that's on you. He also threw shade at Leon for not being fun and silly anymore. And yeah I miss that to. But this makes more sense. He survived a horrific incident and got forced to be a government agent. And now has to deal with yet another literal nightmare. This time MUCH worse than just some zombies. WHO WOULDN'T BE BITTER?! But his seriousness and dedication is what sells new Leon for me. When he gets something to suppress the Plagas he tells Luis that Ashley is the Priority. And he's basically willing to lay down his life to protect her. And you see similar stuff throughout the game. I admire that level of dedication. He's there to do a job and he's gonna do it if it kills him. "By removing Leon's personality they removed the soul of resident evil 4" Yeah I agreed with him on that. But that doesn't make what we got a bad thing. A big generic sure. But generic isn't always bad. And he even went as far as to say Leon had NO quips or funny dialogue. Like ... dude. Did you even listen while playing the actual game? He says this stuff in combat! I'm sorry I spent most of this comment talking about someone else. But this guy just pissed me off. So i'm really glad to hear Johnny speak so much positivity about it.
The dodge was there, but it was WAY more nuanced. Most obviously, it didn't have this massive payoff of auto aim and i-frames during. When I watched Maximilian Dood play R3make, he basically schooled his chat that if he could dodge through the game why should he fight? He steamrolled the game and I could see that it broke most basic encounters. In this game, he used the "Sprint" button to juke toward the Right-to-left axe swing of a Ganado as a test and it completely whiffed. He noted you have to dodge into where the swing was coming from there. It's definitely intentional because it looks like when Leon does it in cutscenes, but it's not invincible and still requires you to sidestep away from where attacks are tracking toward. From my personal experience It feels like an evolution because it's not so obvious when you do it but it's still effective and doesn't force you to aim at the enemy if say maybe you wanna aim at something else like an explosive barrel.
While I can't say the story in RE4 was ever the reason I played the game and I do miss some of the camp from the silly codecs, I do think the plot and characters were usually improved here, except for Ada I guess, she feels less cool than in the original. As far as the cut rooms go, the only ones I kinda miss are the sewer prisons where you first see novistadors I think? Which you could argue was reworked and the cave before the minecart segment that had traps all over the place and a doctor salvador. As you said, I am glad this remake is of high quality like the original yet it doesn't invalidate it as they're quite different, besides that classic RE4 is still widely available unlike OG RE1-3 so even if the remake wasn't as great, it'd be easy to go back to it without emulating. But if you were to ask me which one I prefer, I'd still probably give the edge to the original due to all the memories I've built up with it over the years, but both games are great so eh, moot point, both are worth playing, which is pretty special.
I think in terms of the dodge mechanic, I think I prefer it not being in the game, as it's Jill's specific move in re3, whereas parrying is Leon's thing. It makes the different protagonists feel more distinct from each other
I've never played RE before RE4R and I liked it quite a lot. I even played it side by side my friend who was playing RE4 OG at the same time, It was fun to compare cut scenes and such together
I love the rebalanced weapons in this game. That's one thing I definitely prefer over the OG, and something I worried about after Village. Village made every new gun better than the last in every way, offering no incentive to keep old weapons. Re4r rewards you for whatever loadout you choose. For instance, the first shotgun does an insane 20.2 dmg with it's exclusive. Enemies are smarter, but have smaller health pools, so stuff like the Punisher feels great even at the Island.
To be fair, I had this issue with Village as well. Though, my biggest gripe with its weapons was honestly still the rifle being weird when not aiming with the scope... It'd shoot sideways!
Head up you forget they have a DLC called Separate Ways for Resident Evil 4 remake it's take place in Ada point of view of her senorio from Leon point of view.
As someone who started with re2, played all the remakes, and am now working through OG4 and 6, I think the knife parry is a much better evolution of the dodge from RE3, albeit a little broken. The dodge in RE3 rewarded proper timing and knowledge of nemesis, but my goodness the frame data sucks and it’s extremely hard to pull off intentionally. The parry in 4remake also rewards proper timing, but also gives you some sort of defense regardless of timing. This is nice especially in large crowds but 1 on 1 makes it substantially harder to get hit by the enemy unless you wait too long to parry. Hope this answers your question :)
I don't think they'd remake Code Veronica or 0. Bc RE4R (like the original) probably brought in a bunch of new gamers that now expect the action gameplay. And most of the exisiting RE fans will play a RE5 or RE6 remake anyways. So from a financial standpoint those are the safest bets as opposed to going back to something that's more survival horror based.
Interesting thing to note is that in addition to the U3 fight being removed, they changed the black cloak verdugo so that it is called U3 insteadand at some point it just completely disappears from the story instead of showing up when you fight Ramon. I imagine that might be in a DLC story. And w/r/t RE5: The Stairway of Heaven is visible on one of the screens Wesker is looking at at the end of the game so if you don't want an RE5 remake you may be in for some disappointment, idk.
I think the knife parry is excellent. I didn't mind that the dodge from RE3R was gone. I doubt they'll do this, but maybe Capcom can give Ada the dodge mechanic for Separate Ways/Mercenaries for those that really like that mechanic. BTW Johnny, the trick w/ Luis in Mercenaries is that you can blow up his dynamite early by shooting it and he won't take damage from it. Also, he has a lot of invincibility frames for his melee attacks, so use that to your advantage.
RE4 remake is simply amazing. I'll be getting the last few achievements today, hopefully. The one MAJOR issue I have with this game is the PC performance isn't super great. I find my game crashing way too often and when your doing S+ runs on professional (no checkpoints and limited saves) it is a major pain point and takes some of the enjoyment out of the game. When it runs well though, what a masterpiece. This is also coming from someone who wasn't a huge fan of the original RE4 either. I really appreciate that they removed some of the cheese from this game and tried to ground it in actual horror. Unlike the original.

Truth the parry is awesome
Agreed. The parry is insanely satisfying when you get it down right.
Yes! A Devil May Cry marathon! I wish you luck with the series, especially with 2 and the reboot (to an extent).
I still can't believe Devil May Cry pulled an Evil Dead/Army of Darkness on us.

What a professional and great review highlighting both RE4 games equally
I wasn't sure when you were going to get this but I'm so happy you did and I'm loving it

I had fun playing the RE4 remake; there was some ups and downs, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Glad I was there for the ride

Being able to take one of the best games ever, and PROPERLY remaking it, has gotta be one of the hardest feats ever, and they fuckin did it, I had a blast playing this game and seeing all the changes made, as well as all the references to the original (and games that came after, like the one with Krauser and Leon more) was amazing. Wow! I can't believe Capcom announced its 10-year plan for the Resident Evil series just as Johnny finished his sentence. Coincidences are crazy like that...
YES WAS WAITING FOR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS!

@@johandori7795
Why the fuck did you play it that many times? 😂

Salazar looks like Margaret Thatcher instead of Napoleon.
So it's not just me! I only found it to be aggravating on Professional difficulty; on Normal difficulty, I could mash just fine without much trouble.

I agree that Ada Wong's voice wasn't great. HOWEVER I AM COMPLETELY AGAINST PEOPLE HARASSING THE VOICE ACTOR ON SOCIAL MEDIA. Screw those people.
Agreed
Yeah, everyone should leave the new voice for Ada Wong in Resident Evil 4 remake alone she new to voice acting.
I love this game but being someone who was introduced to the early RE games through these remakes I frequently (and frustratingly) took unnecessary damage because I hit the dodge button (but didn't dodge).
honestly really missed the dodge from RE3R just because it was really fun mastering the dodge
All i asked from the remake was corny one liners and suplexing cultists. And it gave me what i wanted
A dodge and a parry would have been so busted. Can't do both.

Wished Johnny mentioned those funny anime shorts Capcom did for the RE4 remake. I think they were called "Leon and Ashley in the mysterious village" or something, quite cute.
even the sound detail on the Armor from cutscenes. *chef's kiss* Perfect.
With regards to the dodge thing, I think they focused more on 4 being an evolution on 2 with the knife defense deal and the occasional QTE commands

I think the dodge mechanic should be brought and have it accessible when the knife is broken or unequipped.
I never knew you could stealth kill the pig guys, that's great!
Yeah Stealth killed enemies with a knife without wasting ammo for your guns. Work on normal enemies and pig guys that have tanking health but doesn't work on the Chainsaw enemies of a Stealth killed.
Can't wait till you are able to bring the Let's Plays again.
I like that the Vegeta clip you used is from the rare Canadian dub of the Cell Saga.

It’s true! We now have 2 VERSIONS of resident evil 4! And they are both bangers!
Been looking forward to this video. About damn time lol.
Edit: anyone else think about how the acronym for the game spells RE4R?
The next marathon is gonna get CRAZY! Let’s rock…!
It doesn't say it for the sunglasses, but if you have Ashley wear them she won't be affected by flash grenades.
I'm pretty sure RE3R was almost entirely made by a third-party studio, wasn't it?
Yeah it was outsourced to M-Two.
Re3 was good, just too short
i love how Ada's campaign got everyuthing else Leons left out

This game unironically got me into trying ResEvil. And your marathon! So glad i dud cayse ive been having so much fun despite not being a horror fan
Same here, binging the games as we speak
I got a Clement video AND a SomcallmeJohnny video on Resident Evil?! Yay!🥰🥰
