In today's episode, Sonic CD is up next. Sega wanted a Sonic game for their upcoming Sega CD to push sales. Did it work? Not really, but we can talk about the game anyway.

Hey interesting little tid bit about old CD games. Before developers started compressing sound files you can put the game disc in a regular CD player and it'll play the game's soundtrack. The reason is simple the devs of the games used to store game soundtracks on the CD a music disc would.

It is actually possible to beat Metallic Madness Zone 2 in the past. The slow moving pillar actually bounces you upwards really high for some bizarre reason, allowing you to reach the top path and continue progressing. And the reason why I know this is because that was actually covered in Johnny's old review!

He went too hard on a speedball and almost left the land of the living, that's my take
CD brought over a lot of staple elements and I'll always appreciate its aesthetics and ideas but I wish there was a 2nd iteration of the time travel gimmick that took full advantage of the concept. Like make the actual time traveling easier and making exploring all versions of the stage a core gameplay element. Have moments where you have to find items in the future to bring back to the past or something along those lines. As is, there's no real gameplay incentive to go to the future, making it kind of a wasted opportunity.
Yeah, hopefully the time traveling gimmick can return to later installments. It's a great premise for a platformer that's main objective is going from point A to point B as fast as possible knowing the insides and out of the level design thus fully mastering the game. CD's time travel opens so many possibilities...
The only reason to go to the future is to see the good future version instead of the bad version.

Sonic CD’s reception feels like Sonic Unleashed in reverse. It used to be a top contender for the best Sonic game, but now it’s getting a lot more detractors in recent years. I used to really like this game, but as I played it more, I started to like it less. It’s not bad or anything, and I prefer it to Sonic 1, but I’d MUCH rather play Sonic 2 or 3 & Knuckles.
Eh, it also kind of reminds me of in the early 2010s when everyone went from loving the Adventure games to suddenly hating them, then loving them again. I feel a similar thing is happening with Sonic Colors.
Scott the woz's video on Sonic CD sums it up perfectly. He basically said that for years this was the elusive Sonic game that not many people played, so it was held in high regard. Once it started to get released on systems people actually own it went from being the hidden gem of the series to just another game in the series.
@@bensell982 Is that really true though? It become more readily available in 2011, during the early 2010s and I still remember people praising it then. I feel the backlash came during more late 2010s-ish.
@@ghostninja5035 back then it was still fresh and new to a lot of people. The critism started once it was as wide spread as Sonic 1 and 2, so people started to see it's faults more easily. I'll say it's better than Sonic 1 but Sonic 2 beats it by a landslide. Granted I'm also in the group that grew up with the adventure games and heroes on the GameCube(got really good at riders well though I never did finish mission mode) and my favorite sonic game is colors.

I actually liked the Special stages in this game. Imo they were better than both Sonic 1 & 2 Special stages.
This game as a whole is my favorite of the classic series, with S3K right behind it.
CD isn’t my favorite, but I still think it’s well worth playing.

The fact that Sonic CD, which has one of the best Soundtracks in the series(more specifically the JP version), was composed by the same guy who did those awful Classic sonic songs in Sonic Forces....that still boggles my mind......
Ahh, the “Lost Levels” semi-equivalent of this series. (Non-numbered alternate sequel of the original that first came out in a console add-on and that in gameplay, setup and aesthetics is closer to the first game yet remains as the awkward cousin of the main classic trilogy)

It's so weird seeing this revisited. I watched the OG Sonic CD review.. a couple times lol. It's so great seeing you come back to these but also makes you realize how much time went by 😭
Just think, if Metal didn't appear in CD, that hunk of scrap Silver Sonic would have taken his place. I love Sonic CD though. It's not the most well designed game, but it's really fun. Props to the Japanese Soundtrack too!

The Japanese soundtrack for Sonic CD is AMAZING. The US version isn't bad but that boss theme gave me nightmares while the JP version has me doing full splits
I know Sonic CD is kind of a polarizing game but man I love it. I've played through it countless times and love the exploration and music and atmosphere. I even went as far as to get all of the achievements for it on Steam lol.

Yes! I always viewed the JP ost to be Little Planet's themes (the past) whereas the US ost was Robotnik Planet's themes (present & future). Thus, the US ost always made those eras feel more distinctive to me
Yes, and while I still think the Japanese version is overall better, the US one is great. My personal favorite of it is Metallic Madness Bad Future as it’s so sinister
I used to be the kind of person that praised the jp soundtrack and denigrated the us soundtrack but one day I decided to listen to the entire us soundtrack in one go while trying to be as unbiased as possible and now I love it almost as much as the jp soundtrack

I love both soundtracks equally, though there are a few songs that I think are better than its counterpart. (Wacky Workbench Present US > JP, Metallic Madness Good Future JP > US)
Kind of wish some people would remix the US soundtrack some more, I'd love to hear a badass remix of Stardust Speedway's Good Future song. (always saw it as the counterpart to Stardust Speedway's Bad Future JP, at least for the Metal Sonic Race)

Finally, straight to the content!
This has always been my favorite 2D Sonic game. I treasure it so much, even though I agree that the level design is a bit wack and cumbersome at times. The momentum-based physics and exploration were fun to play around with in 1 and 2, but CD is where I felt it really mattered to go fast (for time travel) and find collectibles (for the good ending). It's also just an uplifting as fuck adventure that shows Sonic performing one of his earliest but most heroic feats - changing the future of a would-be doomed planet.
As a shy and socially-awkward dude, starting the game with Toot Toot Sonic Warrior telling me "you can do anything", then beating the game with Cosmic Eternity telling me to "have faith and respect in yourself" from that point on are just sentiments that have always stuck with me when playing it. Sonic has always been cool, but this is one of those exceptional times where he's really inspiring to me.
this game has, with zero dialogue, the best characterisation for Sonic. he's just a guy who lives life his way, but "his way" is making sure that evil doesn't have a chance to ruin the serene world around him.
Just wanted to say you’re the best game reviewer on here, easily. Your character shines through each video and that’s what I find myself rewatching old videos for. Keep at it!

CD is if someone took Memphis Design, and made it a game. Sonic boxes were memphis design inspired all throughout his genesis days in japan, but the games themselves were rarely if at all. But CD? everything about CD, from the art direction to the soundtrack, just feels like that art style personified into a game

Sonic CD is such a strange and interesting entry in the series. I always remembered liking the Super Peel-out move.
It's been a while since I've played Sonic CD but it used to be my favorite. There's so much to love about this game.

It’s nuts this game eluded me as a kid, yet I had Knuckles Chaotix and completed it numerous times. Didn’t play CD till the remaster. Lived up to the hype

The origins collection is the first time I ever got the good ending, thanks to being able to replay the special stages over and over again for my coins that you get as easy as extra lives.
Not to mention, the addition of the drop-dash has (probably inadvertently on the developers’ part) created an exploit that allows the player to super easily travel to the past, which, in addition to the removal of the ten-minute time limit, also makes the robot generator method a bit more manageable. (But I still don’t exactly like Sonic CD.)
I feel the US ost is extremely underrated and people should give it a good listen every now and then.
Wish the "HD" version offered the ability to mix and match musical tracks so you can build your definitive music Gundam.
I definitely agree that we should be able to mix and match songs from both soundtracks! I prefer the Japanese soundtrack on the whole, but both versions of Sonic Boom are my favorite songs to come out of Sonic CD in general.

My biggest complaint with the HD version is that you can’t replay levels unlike in the later released remakes of Sonic 1 and 2 or the previously released Sonic 3
Hope they rectify that in Sonic Origins.
They are probably re-releasing the same set of roms they keep releasing every few years...
Jose Sonic 1, 2, and CD were all in 16:9 in the trailer, and they said on twitter Sonic 3&K will get the same treatment.
I mean in the HD version you can unlock a stage select in the extras menu through speedrunning all of the levels/special stages in time attack mode, of which are unlocked by beating them in the main game. It's definitely more hoops to jump through than the later remakes though.

My personal gripe is that you can't play as Knuckles but you can in 1 and 2.
Sonic CD is my favorite of the classic series, I've always been into the the more exploration this game brings and it's more vibrant feeling really hits for me. JPN soundtrack is also just the best.
This is actually my favorite 2d Sonic game. Most people prefer Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Personally, I enjoyed CD more. It's just special.
It is one of my favorite Sonic games in general. Few Sonic games have given me the feeling of total liberation through gameplay as Sonic CD did.

I agree with Johnny, Sonic CD has the best version of Classic Sonic.
This is the game that make me like the Blue Hedgehog.
Those little anecdotes on the Japanese box arts for the Genesis games really exemplify, to me, what Sonic is really all about as a character. Freedom, courage, the willingness to do what's right (I think that's what the CD cover was saying) not being afraid to take the first step, living life to the fullest.
That, to me, is who Sonic the Hedgehog is as a character.
Changing the jump sound effect was the biggest crime of this game.

You're absolutely right in saying soundtracks can go a long way in carrying a game. One of my favourite things about Sonic CD is the OST. Genuine masterpiece.
And of course, the debut of Amy Rose, a character that I have always loved. Like you said, it makes this game that much more significant :) And yes, some of the localisation has been really insulting, especially for her! Great review man. Keep doing what you do so well!
Sonic CD's always felt like an odd, more experimental Sonic game, similar in popularity to Heroes and Lost World.
Also JPN/PAL soundtrack for life, but won't deny that the US soundtrack has some bops too

I always appreciated the US version of Tidal Tempest for incorporating the dinging sounds that play at certain intervals when Sonic is underwater into the actual song.
While I adore the JP OST, Stardust Speedway Good Future US is my favourite Sonic CD track.
Mine too, I really think that theme fits the race against Metal while also being happy enough to be a good future theme.
@@Cinko420 One thing I dislike about the remaster is that they made it so the metal sonic race always plays the bad future theme which is normal for the jp soundtrack since it did that in the original but in the us version both the good future and bad future could be played depending on the time line. It's a shame because the good future was meant to fit the race

That living a life of power speech at the end on the Japanese version I feel like it makes more sense if you imagine it was written by The Ultimate Warrior. Just snarl or exhale really loudly at the end of each sentence for the full experience.
Quartz Quadrant (JPN) has to be one of my all time favourite tracks. The song is just a trip, and I can't help but get pumped when I hear it.

My first experience with CD was the HD port... And I was 11 at the time in early 2012. How time passes by...
But hey this came out on my birthday and I feel happy for that since this is my most favorite Classic Sonic game.

It is. It is the canonical sequel to 1, which is very obvious, but took longer to develop than 2 for some reason.
Sonic staring up wide-eyed at Little Planet as those little star sparkles fill the air is one of my favorite Sonic moments.

Some fans have created the "Sonic CD DVD". It's a DVD of all the FMV cutscenes from Sonic CD, from all regional versions, and in the best possible quality. And the DVD menus are quite well done, and even include a few easter eggs.
I will have to honestly say. CD is my favorite of the classic games. i just really fell in love with the exploration. i loved spending more time in the stages exploring. to me it made each zone feel more like a location. since youre mostly just running through zones ignoring much of it, they always feel like hyper glorified set pieces mostly.
Also the Japanese soundtrack is superior. but i do really love the us soundtrack a lot. ESPECIALLY Stardust Speefway Present US. god that song is a vibe

That's how I felt when I heard Bioshock was being released as a Remaster for its 10 year anniversary. GOD time fucking flies for this good ol' classic games.

Fun review of my favorite old school 2D Sonic (pre mania), thanks! Little sad you didn't go a bit deeper into the HD remaster though. That remaster literally changes the entire game for the better, its a STARK difference thats done so subtlely you wouldn't even notice until you sit back and take it all in. Masterpiece 👍
