    This is great, i always had a distant relationship with my dad. He is isnt bad or anything, he has been the most supportive person, but somewhere in the last few years we've become distant and now its like living a stranger and not a father

    One of the biggest struggles imo is to find a good balance between following your dreams (making yourself happy) and doing what your parents would like you to do (making them happy). Because lbr, until a certain age and unless you're financially independent, you're going to sit on their backs, and all you can do is try and meet them halfway. Doesn't mean we have to build our whole lives on their expectations and wishes, but from and until a certain age it's just selfish to expect them to pay for shit they can reasonably argue against. (Remember, they have life experience.)

    • @cookiea2b3
      @cookiea2b3 9 років тому +1

      +MacduffProd I agree with you wholeheartedly, but sometimes there is a difference between having more life experience and assuming that you don't know a single thing you're talking about. -And that's a fine line and almost everyone eventually crosses it whether it's only the tip of your toe or blatantly stepping on the other side.

    • @MacduffProd
      @MacduffProd 9 років тому +1

      Micaela Moore of course there's a difference, and it's quite a big one. i think that's a mistake many people make on both sides of the conflict - parents dismissing the children's experiences bc there aren't as many, and children dismissing parents' life experience bc they don't recognise its value and how much can actually be learned from it.

    • @cookiea2b3
      @cookiea2b3 9 років тому +1

      MacduffProd Yes, but in the end I guess it's just how much you have learned from those experiences that makes you more the wiser. My mom's a bit more closed-minded, so that does prohibit her from getting the full extent she could gain from these experiences.

    Hope you feel better soon oh wise king of the Beardos ! we need you :)
    My dad rarely shows me love and doesn't make an effort to communicate with me ..and when he does he is often cold & unkind. So ...
    due to that I have focused more on my mother and we have an amazing close relationship. It also helps that we understand what each other is going through when it comes to my dad's behaviour. It has brought us closer together...which could possibly be a blessing in disguise (as they say).

    Great video Humble! I often have this issue with my mum and many others in my life. They've always tried to steer me away from the paths I have chosen, but I've been teaching myself to take a step back, put myself in their shoes and try to understand it from both sides of the coin, even if they can't do the same. Keep making more videos, I love the way you think about the world! :) x

    Well said, Humble! I still get into arguments with my parents, especially over my career choice (actress) when it comes to money and making ends meet. I have completely different priorities than them (experiences over material things is the main difference). It took me quite a while to see their point of view, but now I know that what may seem like a disapproval of my choices is simply a worry for my well-being which comes from a place of love.

    I think our relationships with our parents are the most difficult ones. And when a parent gets really emotional over things and you feel guilty about it, it becomes even harder. We all have dreams and I think if they are reasonable and our parents want to stop us from fulfilling them, we should stay strong and try to persuade them to trust us because after all its our life. #humblethepoet

    Parent's do this stuff because their kids are their one shot at immortality. The kids are the things that carry their genes on biologically, so psychologically, they try to make them carry their characters and/or hopes on as well. It's not even vaguely fair since the kids are as much individuals with their own right to choose as their parents are, but for as long as the latter are paying the bills, they have the power, so compromise and negotiation are needed.
    I pretty much screwed up my education by trying to fulfil other people's (not parents, other relatives) expectations instead of doing what I wanted and/or was good at, and I've never really recovered from it, so I'm not particularly sympathetic to parents who want to "programme" their kids....

  • @HakimSpokenLewis
    @HakimSpokenLewis 9 років тому +1

    Humble I got to disagree with you on your second point while it is totally reasonable for parents to have hopes and expectations when having kids assuming the kids were planned but it is definitely not our jib to fill out these totally unrealistic expectations. Hear me out for a sec assuming you even read this comment. I don't think that the adults on youtube such as yourself and in some cases lily should be teaching their younger audiences to conform to their parents without any kind of context. While of course conformance can be ultimately positive when its something that will benefit the child and ensure their own safety and happiness, children are not slaves to be whatever their parents want them to be and to be punished when they are not. Now don;t get me wrong i dont mean insubordination I'm referring to a child not wanting to be a doctor or play a sport or do something outrageous that the parent wants them to do. I think if anything you should be teaching them that if the child has a valid reason for not wanting to do something that the parent wants them to do then they should be allowed and encouraged to say "no" and leave it at that. To forbid children the right to say no is a form of force and child abuse

    Why all the people who understand, how life should be liven, don't came even close to my place? My parents is exact opposite: they let me do what I want, but my job takes huge effort and time to be successful. And that's the thing they don't get. They think if success didn't fall on table by yesterday's morning, it'll never came.

      +Sv Every (I really mean EVERY) good thing we choose to do in our lives takes time to see any success.
      I always ask my parents:
      did I started to walk in second day after birth?
      no?
      So why you asking me to succeed in that short amount of time, if apparently you are struggling for last 20 years or something.
      Don't let your parents live your life, cause they have their own. And nobody is too old to do, whatever he thinks is good for others.

    Hey Humble I think you're a cool guy but how come you don't trim your beard and taper it up so it has more of a swag? I analyze it like this... I like the idea of "wild and natural in nature" but at the same time, I don't want to see the wild coming out of it. I guess what I'm saying is clean lines and trim the mustache would be sexier?.... Your thoughts?

      Well, I think we can break it down like this. He likes his beard long and natural. I'm sure he finds it sexy. If you ever happen to grow a beard, you're more than welcome to style it to your pleasure.

      +Jasmeet S. Oh I didn't know you had proxy for Humble's thought. I didn't know he had a PR assistant... I didn't say I didn't like his beard, I stated to keep it trimmed so it doesn't look like a Bushwack. Do you like seeing your neighbors untrimmed lawn growing from all directions? No you wanna keep that shit clean and trimmed

      No but like... Why are you telling him what to do with his beard...while insulting him at the same time (ie bushwhack)???
      He doesn't need a PR rep Hun. Most people, especially someone as self assured as humble, represent themselves in a way that makes them happy or they prefer ---> that's why he keeps a natural beard.

      And actually... I mind my own business and prefer not to tell strangers how to maintain their lawn, especially since they never asked for my opinion.

      +Jasmeet S. It was a suggestion. An idea. An open mind would consider ideas. clearly you don't have an open mind so this convo is irrelevant now... you are a troll. if you want to be a part of a convo. talk to a real person or have your own convo on your own comment box. AND if you mind your own business then how about you do the same here. but you're a contradictive troll so I don't expect any sound opinion from you from here on out.
