Thanks for posting this bro. I have been struggling finding something simplistic like this. I became a DJ in Decemeber (22) and have been slowly becoming a sound engineer as well, simply because I can't stand not knowing how it's all operating. Since adding co2/haze/fog, even to the simple straight dmx compiled lights we use, it's night n day difference. So the last piece is getting full control of those lights so I can really capture the moments for any performer, speaker, comedian etc that comes to the club/venue. Thanks again man. From a fellow brother of metal.
Man honestly I never would have thought to organize the stuff in dmxis like this and trigger it by midi. That’s fantastic and is going to help us a lot very soon. Cheers!
Good stuff. We use DMXIS as a plug in driven by MIDI and synched to our tracks. I have pre-programmed 100 presets in and it gives us such flexibility and scope, even switching on and off our haze machine and laser units
what's your experience with it live on stage? is it reliable? we are looking to do this, synced to our click track, but we have doubts because you cant make mistakes then
@@jasper2870 It's pretty good. You do need a Digital Audio Workshop programme (we use Cakewalk) which accepts the virtual instrument DMXIS plug in and readily integrates with your MIDI setup. Once assigned and with a bank of scenes, these can be trigger along the stave and track length by 'note on'/'note off' signals in a MIDI track correspondent with where you want the scene in the song
One think I ever ask to my self when planning a Light system: if I just have lights back there, the front of the band will be darkened… I mean, the face of the guys, the front won’t be lighted. But you video shows the opposite 😮 great system brother!
Who triggers the show or each song? Is it the drummer who has control over the show so he can start each song when he's ready? Or does the entire show just play from beginning to end without any stops?
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I'm trying to convince a band I provide production for, to build their own similar setup. They want a consistent light show, but work with different providers, so without having their own light setup, it's impossible. Looking forward to more videos!
Bro this is so sick i’m trying to learn about how to run my own show and match to the music And in the same process i found a sick new band My day couldnt be better thanks man
Duuuude, this is exactly what I needed. My band, Chasing Airplanes, is in the same genre and trying to enhance our live show. I also saw you are running sound for Kingdom of Giants… I’ll see you in Tampa on 3/15 🔥
Yeah when I finish up touring I should have 2 weeks and I could come up with a video. I’m trying to get into EMU since it’s more modern and can do it. Maybe a livestream would be better
Hi, thanks for the great video! Kind of new to this stuff; how does it work when you are on tour, arriving at different venues everyday, and you want to combine this show with the venue lights (for example for front lights, or hanging spots & moving heads). How do you combine this pre-programmed show with the 'house lights'? Thanks in advance!
I usually setup my front of house board to the lighting and sometimes will learn the board and do it or I will tell the LD cues and give him a light sheet to know which songs have what colors. Most LDs see the lights they know what to do but if it’s a bad LD and I can’t setup near him/her then I would just say do white front light and let my lights do the rest!
I noticed the venue lighting was seemingly running with you rig also? I have heard about scalable configurations that can allow you to link to any venue that has the capability and control the in house lighting rigs too... Does DMXis work like that?
I was doing that by hand while mixing 😅 Technically you can route it with the venue and probably as a headliner I would do that but it’s a lot of prep work prior!
Sick video! Not a lot of people show how a live show works on the technical side. When you say that the moment you press « play »on the MacBook the show goes on, does that mean that, between the songs, when band singers talk, they have to manage the duration of their speech before the next song starts?
Really intersting, but I am a bit of an 'old-school' musician in a folk band. I was wondering how much control you have in-show, or does it just follow the pre-programmed to the click timing? I like to have the freedom to push the tempo, or maybe repeat a final chorus a few extra times if the crowd are with us.... can this be done with a setup like this or is each song fixed?
Awesome video man gave me a lot of thinking for my bands own setup. Can you go into detail on how you made the stands? I think it’s super smart you put them on wheels & made it easy to move
Thanks for sharing. I'm getting back into lighting after being out of out for 24yrs. Small bands & clubs but a HUGE change to how lights are run. Do they use a click track to keep the same timing as what you have for the triggers?
Having this kind of setup, how much work would be left for the light tech during the concert? And how could the band give proper cues to the light tech on the venue if not traveling with one (so the venue light tech)?
There is a lot to do. So I travel with a system that’s time coded out as well. But just have to make sure my cues have presets are set up. Then im also going to patch in the house rig into the system. Then my band likes to changes things up and do a song that’s not on the list and I get to do it live. They are renting a grandMA system. Before it was obsidian on PC.
how doyou account for minor changes in timing when performing live. lets say the dummer is playng slightly faster or slower than normal. that would throw the lightin off, right?
@@mallhits no worries! I will have a new video soon with the EMU software I’m switching to. It’s basically the same concept just new and improved software and hardware. A lot of bands that have a light show but no LD run their shows like this currently.
The thing Im wondering is what if your live shows are more organic, not just playing the album track, like you take a longer solo or drummer just keeps it rolling?
Just found this video and funny enough I think I remember a house party at Jareds house and I swear that was his garage cause we played Beer Pong on the single car door side and I remember Avoid & For The Likes Of You boys were there and this looks exactly like his garage with the TV on the wall too lmao.... also, i’m trying to setup a dmx rig for a marching band that has assignable led light strands on theirs drums. i know there are wireless dmx dongles, but is there a dmx box that can convert dmx signal to light the assignable led tape lights
I guess I don’t understand your question but the dongles transmit code to the lights to do what you need. It’s nice but also I think it’s not as good as a cable at the moment. Soon I think it’ll take over but cabling it I know it’s sending the signal instantaneously
@@jamsscott no worries. i w done a to. of research since i sent this. i have my head wrapped around it at this point. kee up the great work. it looks awesome

For the global truss stands I would go to Famous Stages Lighting and Sound. They hooked me up with everything you’ll need for stands and clamps. The rest I got at sweetwater!
Hi! Nice video! I also use DMXiS for the lights of my band. When I saw the live video, I was wondering how do you control the front lights and the PAR cans behind the band. Also, do you prefer programing scenes for part of the songs? Because I do differently as I have all the moves, colors and blinks programed via CC on the session.
So I usually do that by hand while running sound. Or I give the LD a light cue sheet. I’m planning to just start contacting the venues programming those lights ahead of time
