My mother has a classic black wool coat she bout in 1963 as a long overcoat, about 20 years ago, she had it cut down into a “car coat”. It still looks beautiful and classic every wearing.

I have thrifted (and love wearing) classic pieces (especially jackets) that others have decluttered/disposed of. The tailoring on many of these is amazing and I'm blown away by the quality garments people dispose of. I like to update my "finds" with a contemporary twist, eg, a graphic tee or sleeveless hoodie worn underneath a jacket, a trendy trainer, bootie or sneakers, to create a "signature" outfit all my own! At 71, I love fashion, follow trends although adopt only those that work for my height, shape and colorway. The key is the pivotal pieces are already in my wardrobe. A great video! Thank you.
Hi Kay. I have a classic trench Mac my mum bought me when I started my working life at 18. I'm 60 now and still have it and wear it every spring/autumn. I have only had to have it cleaned once in all these years and the only time I didn't wear it was when I was pregnant!!😄
I save my classic style, good-quality leather footwear, belts and bags. Last fall when chunky boots came back in, I had lots of great options of those already (I really never stopped buying them altogether). No one can tell that they’re from the 2000s, as you recommend, they don’t have dateable details. They are also broken in, super-comfy, and free.
Hi, I find with the current trend for minimalism and decluttering, nobody admits that they regret getting rid of things. I have definitely not only regretted some, I have been unable to replace them, so this is a very helpful lesson
Thanks Kay. I look forward to Wednesday morning to see what you’ve come up with every week! One thing that I struggle with (and you may have already addressed this) is what shoes or boots to wear with jeans and slacks. I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard but I’m just never comfortable with my choices. Thanks for being there for us!
Thank you Kay! You are always so inspiring and remain my favorite style advisor! I appreciate the reminder of how to wear my classic cardigans. I can’t wait to add that to my mix for Spring. Big hugs to you my sweet friend! 💛🤗💛
Great advice! My pearl necklace is over 30 years old and still looks beautiful. My denim jacket is about 15 years old. It’s a classic Levi’s and I wear it often.
I have lots of cashmere from when I lived in Hong Kong. Also a custom made mid nite blue cashmere coat and some blazers. They still bring me lots of joy. My sisters-in-law gave me Hermès scarfs for Christmas and I have Dior one. All of them are at least 20 years old. My point is that amortized over the many years I have worn them they are better than fast fashion!,,
Hi Kay, Thanks for sharing these ideas for classics! If a garment has been downgraded to gardening clothes and is then not usable, we cut up the cotton items for rags. In a home with 8 people, we do a lot of cleaning and repairing of everything; if a rag won't work for home cleaning, my husband uses it in the garage and tosses it. Also, wool sweaters can be taken apart and made into dryer balls. All the best, Julie
Great to hear! I too reuse the stained and ragged clothes from our family. When they were small our sons would say”oh, mom I liked that dress” so, I started saving the sturdy parts, and reusing the rest for rags. A sweater was remade into a hat. Cotton dresses were remade into everyday napkins. And some favorite plaid shirts became flannel scarves. We wear natural fibers and find it easier to repurpose those items. Sturdy things go to the thrift store!
Hi Kay! I have a wool coat that belonged to my grandmother, I think it could be from around 1920’s or 1930’s and it’s still in a good shape, for sure it’s not as cozy as it was as new but you can still wear it to warmth you on a Mexico City’s winter 😉
Thank you for this. I had a feeling I would have regretted getting rid of my silk scarf! So glad I didn't! It may be pushing 20 years old, but it still looks brand new.
Thank you for this post, I have a black wool coat I purchased almost 15 years ago and have debated moving it on for some time. However, I do wear it once or twice a year, and it certainly meets my needs when I need it.
.....I have a gorgeous black wool coat, it's calf length and even has a gorgeous hood on it. I keep this, even though I wear it only during late fall and winter...it is a classic look that never fails to keep me warm and garner compliments. I believe keeping classics even if we don't wear them except during certain times of year, is worth it.
I am 56 I just found your channel and I am loving it. I am only 5 foot four and weigh about 156 so sometimes I have problems about finding the right look for me. Thank you for helping me though.
Good information Kay. It’s helpful for us to regularly purge our wardrobe and a blessing to give to others. I started doing this today and discovered items that I have never worn. Your helpful videos will help me become a more targeted shopper, so that I buy timeless classic pieces that work.
Particularly appreciated the point about true classic being pared down, versus the same type of garment with "bells & whistles." Color longevity can be influenced by one's own coloring, or "season." As a formerly high contrast Winter, but now with graying hair, bright pink remains a classic color for me.😊 Thanks for this interesting & thought provoking discussion!
Thanks for sharing your tips! I have a jumper that my boyfriend, now husband, gave me 25 years ago. I have changed the blouse I wear over the years to keep it looking current! God bless your day, Anne
Thank you for the great suggestions. I always learn so much from your videos - all of them are full of useful ideas. I'm in the middle of re-organizing my wardrobe and getting rid of some old pieces of clothing I've not used in forever, and I took the opportunity today to drive to my local church' charity shop (just 500 meters away) and donate about 30 pieces. Lots to go, but it's a start. Have a nice day! Anne, Sweden
Great thoughts! I agree with you I too wish I had the silk scarfs ive given away. Even just to look at them is a delight. What I'm realizing, is I should be more thoughtful when cleaning out my closet.
This was so fun! I think as women of a certain age we need to dress beautifully and feel our best. We are constantly bombarded with a beauty industry and social media that tell us we are not enough or not beautiful, especially as we age! Don’t wrinkle, inject and cut and dress like your 20!! This is so far from the truth! We are more amazing and more fabulous as we age and we as women need to love ourselves! I teach Wabi sabi embracing the imperfections of life in ourselves and aging a beautiful gift! Thank you for reminding us how to be fabulous. Blessings to you and everyone here 🙌🏻🍑🧡Lisa

Thanks for the tips Kay. I have a true red raincoat ( trench style), that my mom bought me years ago from Macys. I have NEVER worn it! I live in Southern CA, drought/ desert land. We just do not get much rain here. I keep it for “ one day”.
INK STAINS Kay, I know this is an older video so I hope you see this comment. My husband is retired from the hospital laundry industry. His biggest dilemma was getting the ink stains out of the Doctors lab coats. He heard about this trick - spraying the stain heavily with hairspray and blotting with a dry “old” towel then repeating & repeating until the stain was gone. I don’t know if hairspray (Aquanet) is still formulated with as high an alcohol content as it once was, but it worked then.
I truly love your videos. You have such a wonderful way of encouraging us. I admit I jump on the trend train and don't even wear what I buy because I feel ridiculous doing so. My style is definitely classic all the way. I am so thankful for your input.
I agree! Simple, classic styles in natural fibers or materials (like leather) have the greatest value and longevity in the wardrobe. If you decide that they’re not working anymore, they still have intrinsic value to others for rewear or at least recycling, unlike cheap synthetic-fiber clothes and plastic shoes. I won’t buy these things that have no intrinsic value, but actually cost money to be disposed of in landfills, then won’t biodegrade tor thousands of years or end up polluting our oceans. As an Environmental Scientist and fashion consumer, I think we should all try to reverse the trend of the increasing use of these plastics, they are so damaging to the environment. If we just don’t buy them, manufacturers will be forced to offer better options. Finally, synthetic fibers and other plastics are just miserable to wear, they’re made of petrochemicals, which we should reserve for the critical use needs of future generations. They won’t thank us for gobbling up all the fossil fuels and polluting the world, we must improve.
Speaking of "old pieces coming around"; I have a zip up sweater (a very busy pattern) that I've had for 15 plus years and the other day I was wearing it and got a compliment on it! So you never know.
Hi Kay, I have a dark gray wool coat that's 33 years old. I still love and wear it. I change up the look with different hats, scarves and gloves. Still love it. By the way, would love to see your beautiful curls again!
I was horrified by your story of your white skirt. That was such a unique skirt! Sometimes you just have to let things go. I was wearing a unique white skirt and blouse set that I really liked, but hadn’t spent much on. One Sunday we were having communion at church, and the person in front of me was having trouble getting the cup out of the tray, and instead of choosing a different cup, he forced it out and the grape juice went all over my white outfit! So I do sympathize. I just got rid of a sweater that my husband had gotten me maybe 25-30 years ago. It just looked horrible on me because it was a tunic length and I am only 5’1”. Sometimes you just have to let things go. Thank you for your tips, today and always.
Rubbing alcohol works great to get ink out of clothing, leather & many other things. Using a cotton ball, blot at the stain and do not rub. I put a cottonball under the stain also.
Good morning Kay! Loved all your tips to keep or not to keep! I appreciate your advice and guidelines for keeping our closets up to date! Would you consider doing a video on shoes…in particular summer sandals? I have sandals that are still good, but, I keep them…just in case…even though they’ve not been worn in years. I have trouble letting them go! They do fall in the classic category. Please help with a push! 😊 Thank you! 💕
All good advice. If we shop paired down classic pieces we can keep them for decades. I really don't like buying trendy pieces because they only end up in landfills or cluttering up thrift store racks. I keep all of my nice leather purses, sandals, and shoes too. Regarding classic strands of pearls, male celebrities are wearing them. I will always wear mine with dressy outfits when we go out to a wedding or nice dinner and even with jeans and a blouse. I agree....never get rid of pearls or silk scarves.
Wow great advice! Give me some things to think about. One of the things I've learned to do is to buy multiples of the same garment if it's flattering, material will be long-lasting, comfortable, an affordable price. For instance a square cut neckline is currently popular but it will soon be out of style but it is very flattering to my upper body and face shape. I won't be able to find it in store soon enough, so I'm buying them in different colors, weights, and fabrics to try to last a long time.
Me, too! It's rather uncommon for me to find a garment that ticks all of the boxes, so when I do, I buy as many as I can. Sometimes I buy several duplicates in the same neutral color, too, because I know from experience that I may not find that perfect item again for years and years. Shoes, the same. I'm a difficult fit, so when I find a perfect pair, I'll buy several pairs in different colors.
Thanks Kay. This video was awesome and on time. I was just getting ready to remove some things from my wardrobe. This made it easy. I am a senior citizens and love Dressing for My Day.
I am enjoying your videos each week! I am surprised at how many items you suggested we hold onto, I have kept in my closet! I appreciate each and every subject you touch on. Thank you, Kay!
I bought a denim jacket in 1971 and now my oldest daughter wore it and my youngest daughter wore it and now my granddaughter wears it. I tried it on back in December and it still fits me. I did buy myself a new denim jacket.
Right on, Kay! I have dozens of scarfs and I can not ever get rid of any of them! I love to wear scarfs with outfits! I am amazed how most outfits you show I have almost identical pieces! I get so many compliments from work that I learned to put together thanks to you! And BTW I love belts and jeans too that I'll never get rid of!
Your tips on classic clothing really resonate with me since I sew most of my wardrobe now, I struggle to sew classic stuff. I am learning to sew with natural fibers, which are hard to find in basic clean colors and in a nice variety of worthy fabrics. I also have a very hard time tossing things that I designed and sewed when they don't work with my wardrobe. And some of them, I want to wear, but they are just not what I originally envisioned and don't seem to ever have the right occasion for. Designing and sewing my own clothing has really helped me to be able to create cohesive clothing in colors that coordinate and go with most of my wardrobe. I have also learned how to choose clothing that flatters my shape and lifestyle. I own a great deal to women such as yourself who work on these issues and share what you learn. Thanks so much for all this great information and insight on dressing after a certain age.
Hi Jeannette. That is so commendable. I do sew, but not for myself. You are very smart! Have you considered passing along those hand sewn pieces that no longer work for you to someone else? That way you could have the pleasure of knowing someone is still enjoying them. 😊
I do send my stuff to the second hand stores that I love to shop in. My clothes are well made and are usually very stylish if not classic. I learned to stop depending on patterns and use clothing that I like wearing or things I see in stores or on line and copy those styles. I am rarely disappointed, but it does happen. @@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms
This is really practical. I have had a black leather jacket with white top stitching for many years as well as a long black coat with faux fur narrow collar and large cuffs. I love them both and have pondered quite a few times if it was time to move them on. After hearing your advice, I'll keep them. Thank you as well for the recommendation to keep quality garments for as long as they wear well without holes, etc. It's good to receive this validation when we may have extended family members who are into 'fast fashion'.
This is one of your best videos ever! I would love it if you linked natural-fiber options for us to buy, perhaps in a sub-list, or show the fabric content in the description box. If it’s synthetic, I don’t bother to look at an item. Another disturbing thing I learned about modern textiles last year is that even a small percentage of a synthetic fiber in them, like the ubiquitous 5% Spandex in most knits, disqualifies them for recycling. Then, when biodegrading, the synthetic leaves a “web” that won’t break down. This makes shopping for natural-fiber clothing and shoes a lot more difficult (leather shoes usually have some plastic in the soles, so I look for all-leather or natural rubber soles. Natural rubber is a plant material that biodegrades.)
Your videos are always delightful. Thank you for assuring the ladies not to dispose of things. I took Lady Di's example and have altered some classic pieces, like shorten a long skirt. etc. Our bodies change though and it has been challenging for me to donate quality items that just don't fit like I would like.
Kay, for ink stains try old style Aqua Net hairspray (aerosol). Something in it releases ink stains, probably the propellant that's not good for our Ozone layer.
@@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms Something like that happened to me, too, many years ago, when I was just a teenager. A little girl at church just came to me and started drawing on my skirt with an ink pen. I was grateful that the print was so complex, and dark, that it would be hard to tell, so I was more astonished than upset. I was practically frozen in place at the time because I didn't know what to do! Her parents were just visiting from out of town so I didn't know them.
That’s funny, I have a black raincoat classic style for years, I only wear it occasionally and probably will never get rid of it. Also believe it or not I have a wool lined sporty raincoat that I bought when I was 18 yrs old and it still looks great and fits too. I’m 66 yrs old now lol
Thank you! One of the biggest items to discuss is fit. Even the basic classic items that we would love to keep for life can start looking odd in our changing bodies as we age. Those are the most difficult to let go...
A vintage brooch or pin on an otherwise “basic” jacket or coat (not leather, obviously!) will elevate your look immediately. Ditto other vintage pieces. It will draw interest as it is an unusual but very chic accessory. It reflects a sense of style, not just fashion. And it can be a great conversation piece, especially if “vintage” means “a family story.”.
Pretty sure everything in my closet should go. My problem is my weight has fluctuated over the year so much. I got rid of my larger size clothes a few years back thinking I’d never gain the weight back and guess what I DID!!
😉I feel you. Found it far easier to lose weight than keep it off. It's a struggle not to fall back into bad habits😖, & use the 🍟wrong food🍕as comfort as well as protection. 😁When I lost a huge amount of weight, I was never more thrilled I kept garments from the 90s that had swung back around in fashion. Or, from the 2ks, when I gained some back. 😃 I've reduced again 🎢, & trying to keep it off. 💲I couldn't have afforded to easily replace the quality of my wardrobe〰️& am thankful I kept classics. ✂️Been turning my energy toward styling hacks, 🪡 upcycling, & tailoring my own garments using current inspo. ❤️Love using creativity over consumption, being less wasteful, & more sustainably minded 🌎. 🍀God bless you on your journey. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
Thanks for a very informative video. You are correct in highlighting the natural fabrics! (especially recommended from those of us that are menopausal) They last much longer than the "fast fashion" fabrics. I have navy linen blouse from Laura Ashley, that I purchased in 2015 and it still looks as if I bought it last week! Also I agree about the denim jackets. I don`t like wearing cardigans - they just look frumpy on me. I have a few dark denim and a mid denim, that I wear instead of cardigans. Having said that, I have a lovely alpaca cardigan from German brand Olsen, but I wear it as a jumper.
WOW. I so admire that you have a piece of clothing that you can still wear after 30 years. I wish I could say the same, but hormonal weight gain has taken over :)
I wonder about hats and other accessories..... I have loved linen pants and dresses and shirts for years.... I didn’t wear blue jeans and T-shirts in the winter with a nice blazer or a lovely jacket... in the summer I wear linen dresses etc.... I have lots of clothes that are 20 years old or older including hats... all kinds of hats closures brimmed hats etc... sometimes I wonder how long to keep the hat..... it would be nice if you would talk about accessories thank you for your blog
What are your thoughts on colored denim? I have a pair of high-waisted skinny burgundy jeans, and mid-rise slim straight dark green jeans. I really like to incorporate color into my outfits, and these jeans do the trick! I am currently seeing more colored pants, though, and am trying to keep my wardrobe looking current. Thanks.
Classic pieces that are current. So right now chains are really currents, as are pearls. So wearing those in classic styles will really elevate and update an outfit.
Great video Kay - thank you. I question I’m struggling with as a woman in my Lane 50’s do I have fringe cut in ( I think in US you call it “Bangs”) or do I cut my shoulder length hair shorter. Basically how to look your best with your hair - looking on trend without looking silly 😊🌸
💐 Hi: Great name. My fraternal grandmother was 🥰Ruby Margret. She was remarkable too. 🤔When it comes to hair style, I think you ought to consider following your heart💕. By now, you probably have a good understanding about what suits you. 🤨Dislike the pressure from society for women of any age to hack it off. In my view, it takes serious swag to rock a ✂️crop👩🦰. 😉If you can do it, I say go for it. Actress Jane Seymour remains a hero bcos she has kept her length. Personally, I feel a bit like Samson w/it shorn🥺. Makes me feel as if I lost an important essence of my femininity. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
Find a stylist who keeps current and modern but also listens to her clients. Ask her. But I also suggest keeping in mind your hair’s natural tendencies. I’m letting my bangs grow out because I have a cowlick there that keeps them from cooperating most days. The best advice I can give about your hair is to keep it simple. Less styling is definitely better as we age.
Thank you, Kay, for your video today. It was quite helpful! I have a question to ask that I keep forgetting so I’m going to ask it now. Are there some “fall” floral prints that you believe would be acceptable to wear in the spring?
Absolutely. With the current emphasis and trying to keep our clothes longer I think it has become much more “acceptable” to cross items into other seasons. Wear the colors you enjoy.
Love that you are NOT advocating getting rid of things simply because you only wear it a few times per year. Good job, Kay.
Thanks so much for watching. 😊

Hi Kay,
I have a dark gray wool coat that's 33 years old.
Lovely vlog. I still have my grandmother’s pearls (they date from the 1920’s) and wear them often
I have a coat from the 50s. Wear it a couple of times a year. Long, black wool with vintage buttons. Always get compliments.
Love that cardigan wrap tip!
Cool! Thanks so much for sharing. 🙌🏻
I struggle with putting outfits together and your style with the outfits you are showing are so "me". Thanks for the visuals it helps a lot!
Thanks for sharing Kimberly 🥰
Wonderful! Thanks so much for watching. 🥰
Always such a delight watching you on UA-cam 👋all the way from a very hot West Australian 🦘🌞☀️
I am enjoying your videos each week! I am surprised at how many items you suggested we hold onto, I have kept in my closet! I appreciate each and every subject you touch on. Thank you, Kay!
You’re so welcome. I’m glad the videos resonate with you. 😊
Really nice! I liked the information and the way you speak!
Absolutely agree with you. I wonder how you feel about pants. Today the pants are mostly black and synthetic.
Great! Thanks so much for sharing Linda.
Thank you Kay! I look so forward to your videos on Wednesday. As always, I learn some new things from you!
Thank you. I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. 🌼
I think that’s wonderful. 💕
Really enjoyed this one. Great topic!
Thank you.
Thank you so much for this info! I too have a hard time getting rid of things! But I think looking for classic items when I shop is key!
Thank you for this video Kay. 💕
Wow! I didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing Kimberly.
I have a vintage Cameo pin that I love to wear on my plain denim jacket, sometimes.
Will you please share where you got the colored vases on your mantle? I love your style, fashion and home decor! 😊
Most are from Hobby Lobby.
Your videos are always delightful. Thank you for assuring the ladies not to dispose of things. I took Lady Di's example and have altered some classic pieces, like shorten a long skirt. etc. Our bodies change though and it has been challenging for me to donate quality items that just don't fit like I would like.
Another thing to keep is classic black leather pumps as long as they are not scuffed and worn looking.
Kay, for ink stains try old style Aqua Net hairspray (aerosol). Something in it releases ink stains, probably the propellant that's not good for our Ozone layer.
Yes, I did that. A lot of hairspray!! Hahaha! But to no avail. 😌
Liked this . Also your hair looks great - modern.
Thank you, Jane. 💕
Thank you! One of the biggest items to discuss is fit. Even the basic classic items that we would love to keep for life can start looking odd in our changing bodies as we age. Those are the most difficult to let go...
Absolutely!
Kay, I have a few wool cardis from Garnet Hill. They are in beautiful, colorful Prints. I think I will hold on to them. Thx!
Very helpful! Thanks, Kay🙏🏻😊
You bet! Thanks so much for watching. ☺️
I always look forward to your videos. I appreciate your research!
Thank you Jan. 🥰
Thank you Lady Kay!! Always great info.
I have some older 100% linen pieces that are beautifully cut and made that I have revitalized with Rit dye.
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing.
Please can you do a video on modern styling for some rather dated classics comparing the old and new ways of wearing them.
Good idea. I’ll keep that in mind.
I need this now , time to declutter , thanks great reminder xx
Very useful, thank you! 💞
Wonderful!
Thanks for this video! So helpful as I do my spring cleaning of my closet. Many good concepts to keep in mind.
Can you comment on vintage brooches, lapel pins, or rhinestone statement necklaces? Vintage satin or velvet clutch evening bags?
Vintage is always in style, just check how high fashion is doing jewelry and imitate with your vintage jewelry
They’re always a nice addition. 😊
Loved this Kay!!! 😁👏👏❤️
Thank you so much!!!! So helpful!
(Melanie) Excellent video. I really enjoyed the basic principles you shared.
I agree on natural fibers and scarves.....
Pretty sure everything in my closet should go. My problem is my weight has fluctuated over the year so much. I got rid of my larger size clothes a few years back thinking I’d never gain the weight back and guess what I DID!!
Oh my. Well, yes. It’s definitely best to get rid of things that don’t fit. 😊
🍀God bless you on your journey.

very helpful video! Please do more about styling classic pieces in a modern way!
Absolutely will. Thanks for watching. 😊
Great advise Kay. Thank you. 💕
Thanks for sharing Anna. 😊
Good video! I love The Minimal Mom for her advice on this topic as well!
Wonderful!
WOW. I so admire that you have a piece of clothing that you can still wear after 30 years. I wish I could say the same, but hormonal weight gain has taken over :)
Hahaha! Well it’s a jacket…that’s oversized by design. I’m definitely not the same size I was thirty years ago! 😉
I’ll be talking more about hats soon. Thanks for watching.
Great video! I agree with you to keep what you love!
Thanks for sharing Susan. 🥰
Good info but my question is I have a tummy n need a white blouse any suggestions.
Pearls are back in style with a vengeance!!! Everything has pearls on it now: hair accessories, sweaters, shoes, jewelry, you name it.
Yep! 🙌🏻
Very helpful video ! Thx
You’re so welcome. Thanks for watching. 🥰
You are so inspiring. God bless you
Hi Kay. Please help. I have thick calves. I have a hard time with jeans. Where is your go to store to get your jeans?
What are your thoughts on colored denim? I have a pair of high-waisted skinny burgundy jeans, and mid-rise slim straight dark green jeans. I really like to incorporate color into my outfits, and these jeans do the trick! I am currently seeing more colored pants, though, and am trying to keep my wardrobe looking current. Thanks.
Any suggestions on how to store purses when limited on space ???
Man, I just admire you so much, and I wish you were my next door neighbor or my best friend. I just like you that much
What kind of jewellery would you use to update a outfit
Classic pieces that are current. So right now chains are really currents, as are pearls. So wearing those in classic styles will really elevate and update an outfit.
Great video!
Thank you!🙌🏻
Great video Kay - thank you.

How tight is too for pants and jeans? I have gained some weight, but I still wear my pants with longer pieces.
Thank you both for your input and especially yours Kay and taking the time while you’re on vacation! I appreciate you both.
