I’m doing a “no-buy” year for anything new. I find the quality of almost all retailers has dropped significantly so I’m planning to shop my closet and find new, creative ways to style what I have.

I did a no buy year two years ago. It was the best thing I ever did. By the end of the year I had gotten rid of clothes I kept passing up. The next year I did a low buy year and only replaced essential items.

When changing sizes, a good tip is to shop second hand! If you shop carefully, you can find wonderful, quality clothing in name brands that are often rarely worn. This way we can repurpose the clothing, and help the overconsumption of clothing in our country. You also don't feel guilty when you don't choose to wear it any longer because your size has changed.

I totally agree about only buying clothes that fit your body as it is now, but I live in a rural area where there’s not many shops for women’s clothing where you can try on things. For most of my life I lived in a big city and used to live 5 minutes from a large shopping mall with Nordstrom, Macys etc. I miss being able to go and try on clothes, get bra fittings etc. I can & do order clothes online but always taking a chance as to whether the item will fit.

Lovely video Kay thank you. For me it was loafers that looked lovely on other people but just were not right for me. I think it shows a maturity of mind when you can acknowledge that something is just not your style and leave it behind. I have just completed week one of the 75 challenge. Have you heard of it? Basically you challenge yourself for 75 days to do: 2 forms of exercise, 1 outside, 1 inside (mine is yoga or reformer pilates and walking), a diet (intermittent fasting for me), reading 10 pages, drinking a certain amount of water, and I am doing a no buy or low buy. Good luck with your body revamp ❤

I lost 40+ lbs last year and dropped size from a “tight” size 12p to comfortable 6-8p. I foolishly(?) purchased a few items that fit on my way down the scale and now have a whole new pile of donations.😔 In November I removed everything from my walk-in closet and only put back what I could still wear. It was immensely gratifying to see all the empty space! In 2025 I’m looking for casual or dressier pants that are not jeans or joggers, as I’m trying to get away from wearing jeans every day and joggers have never looked great on me.

I thinned my wardrobe last year. Now I can really see what I have! I discovered this year I just don’t need as many clothes, I wasn’t really wearing them. I’ve been limiting my purchases to 3-4 new items per season. If I purchase something new , something leaves. It is difficult as there are so many beautiful things out there. Distressed jeans, barrel jeans and lady jackets just aren’t my thing. Excited to see your capsule wardrobe ideas!😊

Yes, i did the same!! Went through my whole wardrobe (retired and have lost weight) all the work wear, out.... all the uncomfortable and high heels, out.... everything had to fit, go with at least one other outfit, with the shoes I had and I had to be able to say where I would wear it. It took me most of the day, as I tried everything on, went back over things, etc... in the end, I had 5 big boxes to donate!!! Over the next 6 months, I tried to wear everything at least once, bought a couple of new things, and did cull a couple more older things...then when the seasons changed from cold to hot weather, I went through what I kept again. Again I still got rid of a couple more things and treated myself to a couple of fresh new items. Now I have a wardrobe that's about 1/5 of what I used to have, but I live it all, no longer get depressed looking at all the stuff in there i didn't want to wear, and not being able to find what I would wear. It is liberating!!❤❤

I often buy things I like for “just in case I need it.” Not doing this. Only buying what I know I’ll wear. Today I got in the blue joggers from Athleta with the striped top you showed for Mimi Monday. OMG! I love it. Can’t wait to wear it. You show us so many nice things. Thank you for that.

This has been really helpful, Kay! I am pear-shaped, so the shorter jackets look much better on me than longer (hip-length or longer) jackets or sweaters. I am not going to buy wide leg jeans - I am looking for something between slim, straight-leg jeans and wide leg jeans. I am 5'4" and wide leg jeans just aren't flattering. I agree with your views about distressed and whiskered jeans, but I need some medium--wash jeans and so many of them have those "wear marks"! I am really learning to be more selective about what I buy. Even if I really need to fill a hole in my wardrobe, the item must fit well and look good, or I won't be happy with it in the long run. You have reinforced my determination to be more selective!

Wow! Right on Kay. I’m not buying another puffer jacket as I have four with two of them new. No turtle necks instead wear a scarf if cold. Wear the nice pieces I have in my closet for everyday like my beige unstructured wool coat. Change my clothes after gym workout instead of looking like I just did a workout all day. Besides sport bras are too tight for all day long. Not buying any more denim as I have everything I need in every style including corduroy in multiple colors. Yay. I’m with you Kay!

I meant to comment at the time, but didn’t, and now you reminded me! Your video about defining your style DID rock my world 😉. It was the crossing out of the word”find” and replacing it with “define” . With find I felt like it was more a predetermined answer that I just needed to keep searching for. With define I feel like I have some input and control over that what it looks like.. It TOTALLY changed my perspective. You are amazing, girl! ❤

I also finally got rid of clothes that just aren't comfortable, even if they technically fit me fine, some just aren't comfortable, and I am just too mature to deal with that nonsense anymore, so they were donated. Now I need to work on only buying quality items when it fills a true need.

    It was neat that really,
the underlying core to your video/thinking started out by drawing a connection and giving an example about food choices.
If we connect the dots - though it was a nice, informative and fun video about clothing, style, and wise clothing purchases, it's also about drawing self boundaries in general.
    I wasn't expecting that
    - a double blessing today - thank you, Kay.

I have so many clothes that I have decided not to buy something just because I like it but to really think about whether I need it. I have never done that before.. thinking about other pieces that are similar I already have or not. I also try to make sure the item will go with at least 3 others in my closet and that I have the right shoes and don’t have to buy a pair just to wear with that piece. I lost 50 lbs over 2024. I didn't really start to buy new sizing until the fall and I bought my work pants with elastic in the back of the waistband and now those fit with little to no stretching of the waist line so they have transitioned with me to my new pant size. Next fall I'll add more 'tailored' pants in my new size if I need them.

I enjoy Ann Taylor, loft, banana republic, j.crew, and gap clothing. But I often find these brands at thrift stores and online used stores and save a lot of money on quality pieces. However this year will be a very low buy year as I believe I have enough clothes for all of my different lifestyle needs. I agree with you on the lady jackets. Great video Kay 🤗 I agree about the lady jackets they really don't suit me either as I'm an inverted triangle, although I've really tried to find one that does work 😢 in fact I'm giving up trying to find any blazer, they just don't work for me 😭. Instead I will be buying cardigans they do work much better and are also more comfortable😀. I wont be buying anything that needs to be dry cleaned or needs a lot of faffing about to get back in shape! Last year I found out that I'm allergic to polyester, so I've been through my wardrobe and thrown out all clothing with polyester / polyamide in, (lot's more than I thought there would be!) and I've been careful to check every clothing purchase, very time consuming and I needed a magnifying glass at times!! 🔍 It particularly blew my mind on finding polyester in jeans!!!🤯 Loved the video, let's see if we can stick to our guns going forward!!😉

I bought a pair of dark washed. Jeans ans wore them so much that I have started to develop whispering. What I notice is that whispering looks so different because it is exactly where it should be, no manufacturer can get it that perfect. Good luck on your weight journey. I am right there with you, already down a half size!

I totally agree with you that the lady jackets are not figure flattering! So tempting because they look good on some but absolutely make the waist disappear or blend right in with the hips.

I'm not buying much this year and I mean it this time. I love clothes and I keep buying things that I never wear or wear once and consign them. What a waste of money! I'm sick of the quality issues just like everyone else and I'm with you on buying great quality but much less. I actually find that I am more creative when I have less in my closet. I just purged a TON of items from my jewelry armoire too and that feels good. Making some big changes this year!

Thanks Kay for your informational videos! I’ve been paying attention to what past purchases aren’t serving me well, don’t look good, haven’t held up. I’m also trying as a whole to get things that will last, and suit my retired lifestyle better. I’ve purchased too many items just because they were on sale, then have a hard time finding things I have to wear with them. I need to follow your advice better about color and style choices.

Great Video, One thing I won't buy anymore is sneakers for anything other than active wear. I have a closet full of really cute low cut sneakers that I put on and take off because they' don't look or feel right, even though I wish they did. This was a major realization for me because I like them on others and I really did try! Sneakers make my already short legs look stubby. Besides, the cute ones are too flat for this 5 foot tall gal! No high heels for me, but flat is not comfortable either! Boots, comfy loafers, and sandals are good for me. Unless I see a "unicorn" of a pair of sneakers, they won't be on my 2025 shopping list!

Hello Kay, I love your channel, so informative. I am with you about lady jackets. As cute as they are on others, they make me look like a box. Also, the distressed jeans. Been there, done that. Actually, I agree with every point you made. I plan on keeping to a low buy plan this year, and instead, I’ll spend more time styling what I have, which is plenty. So keep up the good work, as I continue to refer to your channel for help.

I live in Australia and I only buy Australian made clothes. The quality is exceptional and they simply fit western women better with a waist and longer length. I also buy Australian made fabric when possible. There is a wonderful Viscose that is soft, washes and wears beautifully that I always look for. When I lived in the US I also tried to buy only US manufactured. I have towels that are US cotton and made in the USA that are 25 years old and still beautiful! I remember looking for the USA clothing and textile union label.

I live in the U.S. and clothes used to have the ILGWU label (International Ladies Garment Workers Union) when I was growing up and the quality was always fine - but that entity merged with a hotel employee union in 2004 and so little large-scale clothing manufacturing takes place in the U.S. now that it's pretty much a defunct organization when it comes to clothing.

Your explanation of why quality at our favorite stores in going downhill makes so much sense. And yes, quality matters more to me at this age than ever. I don't need as many clothes, and I do a capsule wardrobe, but all of my pieces need to be comfortable, polished and able to be used to multiple occasions. The feel of fabrics is one of the most important things to me, and I'm also finding that it is changing - and I won't buy something if it doesn't feel soft or doesn't move with my body. I'm giving up on trying to find a blazer - they are not right for my body type (short waisted) and the buttons are always in the wrong spots, and I'm also not. going to be buying anymore inexpensive cashmere. It pills quickly, is not as warm, and I could have bought one Scottish cashmere, instead of 4 of the popular brand, and it would last me the rest of my life!

@ Yes - I’m talking about Quince. Their cashmere sweaters are $50 - and yes, they are soft, but they are thin and they do pill. I understand they have a thicker version at a higher price, which I haven’t tried yet. I did buy a Charter Club one from Macys during a sale and it appears to be better quality.

Thanks so much for your transparency. Thanks a million for this video. I concur with so much of your plan for 2025. Last christmas season I cleared out my dresser and closet of MANY jeans of a variety of fashion styles. I’ve kept the ones that fit comfortably and flattering. As for the Lady Jackets. No, never. They remind me of a similar fashion from times ago. My opinion is they were not flattering then nor now. I am able to wear them as a slim and tall gal. Just don’t like them. Polished and elegant is a good choice for dressy occasions. For casual and comfort I am a jeans and flannel shirt gal. Nothing boring about that for fall and winter. Yes, I have , inadvertently, purchased duplicates. lol
Thanks again, this was fun. Blessings.😊

My intentions this year is to have a "NO BUY" year when it comes to clothes, shoes, and purses. I have a wonderful collection of clothes after spending a lot of money over the last few years. Nothing extravagant, nor did I ever go into debt. I continue to declutter items that no longer bring joy or do not fit. I agree that purchasing quality and having items that suit your lifestyle and figure are key and being comfortable and confident is of utmost importance. I do love lady sweaters. I have three. They suit my petite stature. Thank you for this video.

Thanks for sharing what you aren't buying and why. I do feel that you might have said that they were your things and not necessarily what others shouldn't buy. Personally I need some straight leg pants to wear with my sweaters. As much as I enjoy my wide leg pants I am so short waisted that tucking in a top isn't the best look on me unless I have a 3rd piece. And lady jackets work great on me because they are shorter so work well with those wide leg pants. For me I just need to buy less clothes! Lol!! You have a good day and thanks for reminding us that we need to be mindful of what we wear.

I love the lady jackets, but I too struggle to find the right fit I really think that I needed in a petite. I feel like the ones with the collars especially swallow me. Second comment the best button shirts I have found come from With Nothing Underneath. I do plan to buy two more this year. And.. Lady Jackets do’t work for me either. I have a black and navy and never wear. I am not buying any sweaters or clothes that have dropped shoulders. Just not flattering. I prefer a more structured sweater. I am with you I love jeans with little distressing but so hard to find. My must worn pants this fall winter are some wide leg corduroys from JCrew.

I love lady jackets! But I can't find one that suits me. However, I did find a lady sweater that fits beautifully on clearance, and I am really, really enjoying it. I am trying to be content with this one item in this category. And ... I would have never found it without my daughter. She can still shop in the junior department, because she is slim and petite, and she tried this lady sweater in the dressing room. It didn't work for her, so it went in her reject pile, but I decided to give it a try and BAM! It's a winner. Maybe because it's a junior fit .... it's more fitted and stream lined. IDK. I only know it works and it makes me happy!

I have gone from a 12 to a 4 in the last 8 months. It has been a strange experience. But we have a wonderful place here that switches out my larger jeans for new ones that fit as we lose weight. You are correct about not buying things that you might get into in a few weeks....what if I don't? I only want things that fit me comfortably, and the same with my shoes. I loved heels but I refuse to fall off my heels and break my hip. Goodness, I just want comfort but stylish.

Ugh, I couldn’t agree more with strategically faded jeans. The only problem is, it’s really hard to find jeans without it. I also agree with the “lady jackets” for the exact same reasons. The jacket hits in the wrong spot on the body for a lot of us plus (I know this will be a hated comment) they actually came into fashion for young women because it was a kind of twist on youth borrowing something your grandmother wore and thus making it cool because now a young person is wearing it. Similar to “mom jeans”. “Mom jeans” is actually a slam on their un-coolness but somehow suddenly hip with a young body wearing it.
