It's not enough, simply, for the library to be there. There needs a certain mediation of the institution. So for example, we could have-there's a piano in the other side of this room. You know, we could say, well, there's a piano here. You're free to play the piano. Ah, but I-I can't play the piano. I don't know the chords and the scales. I haven't-and yet, if I-if I did all that then what I can make happen on the piano is infinitely richer than if i've never learned to play the piano. And I suppose-I suppose when we talk about rescuing the values of the treasure trove- That's discipline as the precondition for freedom. Right? Which is-which is a-which is actually a Nietzschean idea, at least in part-I mean it's older than that. It's the apprenticeship idea. It's that-it's that before you can be a painter who can paint what's beyond mere memory, you have to inculcate that discipline skill, and that a lot of that is painful repetition and hard grinding work. It's the sacrifice of the present for the future. But once you manage that then things open up, and virtually everything you learn of value is like that. It's very, very, very difficult to learn to write and there's arbitrary-"arbitrary" rules that you have to follow and bind yourself to, and while you're learning those rules, the probability that you have any creative freedom to speak of or any facility with the rules is very low. You're a rank beginner. And even to some degree whatever creativity you have is going to have to be stifled while you're passing through that-that keyhole. But if you pass through it, then something massive opens up on the other side, and it is definitely the case that disciplinary institutions, universities, are exactly that-is they're places of guidance and they're places to encourage people to develop the discipline that's necessary to see beyond the discipline. I mean, that's why we have disciplines, right? I mean, the words aren't there by accident. You have to narrow yourself first, and then you can broaden outward, and that's part of the process of maturation, that-that part of the-that's part of the sacrifice of childhood. Say, in childhood you're nothing but potential. But it's not realized and you don't know how to realize it. And so then the question is, well, how do you get to a point where you realize the potential? And the answer is you sacrifice almost all of it to a single direction. This is Nietzsche's commentary on the Catholic Church. He's a great admirer of the Catholic Church, despite the fact that he was also a radical critic of Christianity. See, the thing about the Catholic Church is that it forced everything to be interpreted within a single explanatory framework, and that was a discipline. And once that discipline was established then the disciplined mind could explode in every direction, which is precisely what happened. And so-and that's the thing about growing up is that when you're a teenager and a young adult you have to sacrifice everything you could have been as a child to be the one thing that you're aiming at. But then that opens up and-and the universities are part and parcel of that process. And you need the guidance because the library is too large to wander through it unaided.

@@arko128 a number of things, but the main thing is this: he changed the way I think about how much control we have over our lives and how much of it is under our control. I was the type of person who was just living life and skating for things to happen, waiting for things to improve. I pursued short term pleasures and believed that was me living a happy life but it left me depressed and anxious with no sense of self. Listening to JPs videos has helped me realise the importance of developing character through the pursuit of long term, valuable goals. By living a more organised life. He made me see what I was doing wrong when nobody around me could. Not even myself.

I'm getting so sick of these "know it all" people that THINK they know something because they saw a video about the subject on UA-cam. I have dedicated thousands of hours of study and work to become the professional I am today. Pass through the keyhole and you'll have success waiting there for you on the other side!
He’s right, like wise I too have put in what some would call a relentless amount of hours,days, years of what some may call a meaningless activity since I was 18(skateboarding), for almost 10 years and I’m just at the beginning of my mastery of it, I still have a ways to go, the point is. Why should you try so hard for anything, cause most people won’t. I see so many dudes out here that wanna be so good at skating but skate one or twice a week, you can’t master anything by being half committed, no one ever achieved mastery without striving for it, and I use the word “strive” because until you realize that you must not only under stand that but experice suffering and pain, and only through relentless, mental, and physically exhausting yourself will you begin to not just see your progression but feel it. But a person can and must truly believe in themselves. See most people don’t believe in themselves enough to become great. And that is why most people don’t achieve high levels of creativity, sophistication, art, etc. in the great words of Rodney Mullen “belief is rarer than talent” another good example although In a fiction movie “Lucy” she takes two knives and stabs them into the hands of the Asian drug lord. And says “learning hurts, all you know right now is pain” and the Asian guys is in agony. The same with learning to accept and even fuel off that pain

I got there now in my year 32. I'm lucky then to have gotten it so early. Time to be grateful and work hard to have awesome 40s.

There is a large population of people that dislike videos to be ironic. Then there are a large portion of people that hate Jordan Peterson. Then there are a portion of individuals who claim their understanding of the mechanics of personhood is greater than everyone else's except for maybe some of their previous teachers. So there's a pretty large viable group of "dislikers" I think.

@@dotdashdotdash I think he comments on radical Marxism, in that relying on indoctrinated "fairness" to propagate "freedom" or "prosperity" begins restricting peoples and destroying the sense of freedom and prosperity it was after. Also he is more critical of Marxism because it's the natural antithesis of the capitalist basis of the west which kind of... seems to be "working" which I obviously use loosely. Even he agrees there should be some balance in ideology.

I thought I was so superior (as a "Renaissance Man") in my 20s when I read everything I could get my hands on, but I am much happier years later now that I have specialized and gotten my doctorate and professional license in a field that suits me.

Once they had their beliefs and values settled, they could use this to move forward and apply themselves in other areas of the world.
OK. Well the Catholic Church started the idea of apprenticeship. This was later : (industrial revolution era ) taken up by the various guilds; some of which ; thankfully, still exist, with limited interference from government to this day.( trades)

I really do appreciate Dr Peterson's historical analysis on this subject. However; business and corporations -- with the undying support of government -- now hold the role ; formerly that of the Catholic Church . And later on ; TECHNICAL COLLEGE .

I think wrong way to put it. Discipline has all what he said but sacrificed. On the contrary discipline is whole person balance, focus, expression all done with joy. The will of man. Sacrifice : is I don’t really want to do it , but I should or I will. Big difference . I don’t really want to be a pianist but I have to do it. Or I want to be a pianist but I don’t want to practice and learn about it. So at the end the best pianist will be the one that enjoy the whole process rather the pianist that had to do it when he really didn’t want to practice . The same analogy goes with doctors. Some are doctors cause family expectations but other became doctors cause they enjoy the process to become doctor . Pain with pleasure . Just like Arnold said when he was at the gym he smile every time he made a rep in his workout while others seems to be suffering in their workout. So Arnold became best body builder he didn’t sacrifice anything he enjoy every minute of it.
Ok. But sometimes to discipline yourself you have to sacrifice other things. For example if you want to lose weight you have to sacrifice unhealthy foods and a lazier lifestyle for a healthy diet and active lifestyle and yes you enjoy it almost immediately because u feel so much better physically but the instinct for the bad things is still there and you sometimes fall back. That’s both discipline and sacrifice
If a child is to sacrifice his or her childhood, to be that one thing he or she wants to be, is a very limited future.
But it opens up because the child that sacrifices is the adult who achieves.

I don't really know what hurts the most, discipline or regret. But both hurts.
I also recommend listening to what Dr. Gabor Maté has to say about this subjects... It's good that you aim for something in the outside world, but as the outside world exists, there's also an inside one, and if something is getting too harsh on the outside you might aswell go deeper in the inside one. What i mean is that in order for your estructure not to collapse you should also have good roots, aka, know yourself. You should be introspective as you move forward, and that's the point where i think Jordan is a little weak. You can force yourself only to a certain point before things get out of control. Before that happens, look what's happening inside you, search for trauma, search for your own conflict. I'm not saying that what Jordan says it's not valuable, but lacks a bit in the other half
I disagree with a lot of this. Why? Bc with a combination of discipline (from parents, school; etc) & childhood trauma none of what he & Nische says is Supposed to happen, happened. It took a Lot of OTHER dif influences to bring me out of that place to realize & start thriving in my potential & true essence. So maybe in a more perfect world This theory would be true. 🤷🏿♀️

I must say, the longer I live, the more I disagree with the idea of discipline. Sure if you know say 80-90% of how to do something RIGHT or optimal, in the end... it wont feel like discipline, and you'll probably get to 100% efficiency

We are all different who needs the same shit, but we are all motivated by different things and it's your life mission to find out: WHAT do you VALUE
When you find it, even a lazy SOB will be disciplined, it's automatic

The question is are you motivated to enjoy your present or just the pleasures that come your way or are you motivated to become a better version of yourself and achieve a higher level of living. I say consistently working towards being your best most moral being with an eye out that others should benefit as well will get you very far. Most good things in life require discipline. A marriage. A family. A job etc.
And many people value a good marriage and value family but aren’t a ready to sacrifice thier short term pleasure for that. So even if you value something without discipline it’s not going to manifest
No pain no gain. So easy. I do not to be Nietzsche. Anyhow, hyperintelligent and wealthy born persons have an advantage and become successful without pain. But for normal ones it is pain.
