After a frustrating hour surfing the internet for a possible answer I found your video. Perfect. Right to the point and nailed the diagnosis. I had an hour of everyone else posting that the Carb was dirty, the airfilter, the spark plug, bad fuel. All the basics. I just bought the thing. Thank you for not being like thousands of others and for putting something original and useful out there. Saved me from alot of BS.
For 3 yrs I have been fighting with this stupid mower, since it was brand new in fact, took it back to Menard's at one point and wanted my money back. they offered to repair it, so I gave it a chance.... what a freaking pain that has been. I followed your video instruction and added a new spark plug, figuring the old one was screwed up from the hell I put this thing thru. HOLY CRAP it worked I was almost afraid to shut it down for fear it was just teasing me, but damn it restarted multiple times .......so THANK YOU very much
Many of the new plastic carb engines have the same issue. Some time it does not need repair until you cut around hedges or ornamental trees on your yard and you accidentally hit the air breather against the hedge or tree and it causes the steel bracket to be pushed in slightly. Mower will keep running and start when it is hot but when it cools down same problem you just showed your audience. Thanks for passing this on, you saved your subscribers mucho dollaros at the repair shop.
I was going crazy trying to figure out why this 1 year old mower would not start... I found your video & got the old file out, filed it, put it back together, added fresh gas & it started first pull after sitting all winter in MAINE!! Thanks.. New subscriber here!!
Nice, got a 725exi last spring, this spring, wouldn't start, saw this video, and it was EXACTLY like you said. They still haven't fixed this flaw. Used a simple fingernail file, and fixed it quick. Fired up on the 1st pull. Thanks again!
Wow, I just picked up a basically brand new one for free from a neighbor yesterday that ran maybe twice and then they couldn't start it. I hope this is the issue because this one has much more power than mine. I'll keep you guys posted!!
A customer came in today complaint is no start went thru the typical diagnoses procedure choke was open then I remembered your video on this problem thank you for sharing this problem
Awesome!!!!!!! I hate those plastic carbs! I have 2 identical Snappers with that engine. Just did your fix, took me less than 10mins and worked perfectly!
I recently purchased a mower with this engine and dismantled the side as per the video, and to my surprise Briggs & Stratton have actually fixed this issue - there is now a notch cut into the left side wall metal to allow the full movement arc of the plastic piece without getting stuck. Good to see that they finally addressed the problem
I spotted this problem and I was just about to hammer that whole bracket out of the way, which would have created other issues. After watching this, I took a less elegant but highly effective approach. I used small wire cutters to just snip the end of that control horn off. Plenty of clearance and no more sticking! Great Video!!
Thank you for this video!!! The choke lever was definitly sticking and a little dremmel work fixed the issue...I don't think this is something even a veteran mechanic would be able to catch...
Well,I checked the choke lever and there was plenty of room but the mower still wouldn’t start , so I followed your carb cleaning instructions and drained and cleaned the fuel tank . I then put it all back together and it fired up on the first pull 👌. Thanks again for your postings on small engine fixes .Now I gotta cut the grass lol😂
Have a Husqvarna Briggs & Stratton 675EXi that runs great for a while and then seems to lose power. I'm thinking it's the same thing. Gonna give this a try. Thanks!
I noticed the same mechanical issue on mine and fixed it by cutting off extra plastic. Yet the problem is still there, just more subtle. It runs cold, it runs hot, but it hesitates to start when the engine is warm. I wonder if this is thermostat on the muffler or carb acting up? Both were cleaned.
I don't know if you'll ever see my comment but I wanna thank you so much for uploading this video....so here's my story. We purchased a brand new B&S 675EXI mower. The wife and I used the mower about 12 times in total, then about a month ago the mower wouldn't start. I first thought maybe my wife put the wrong fuel in or it was simply a bad spark plug. So I purchased a new spark plug, put new gas in...and nothing. We gave up. My wife decides to purchase a manual push mover, I said whatever. But then I got pissed with the thought of using the push mower and decided to do some research on the possible causes on why this was happening for what was actually a brand new mower. I took the mower apart and saw nothing but what appeared to be new parts. The only thing I saw was that the air filter was sorta dirty with oil and debris. I then come back in the house to conduct more research. I came upon your video. I watched and listen to what you said about the plastic choke lever. I kinda blew the video off because I had watched several videos with no luck. So I said F it and decided to put the mower back together...just then I noticed something.....the choke lever was stuck and that metal piece was open. I was like HOLY SH*T!...Luckily my wife had a Dremel tool she uses for crafts etc. I did exactly as instructed via your video, I also purchased and installed a new filter. Put put it back together and poured new gas in the mower...said a prayer and pulled on the cord....and man, I couldn't believe it, the mower started on the first pull!!! It smoked a little and I think that was because (I failed to mentioned) I had sprayed the carburetor (in and out) with some carb cleaner. I let it run for about 2mins. I came in the house and gloated to my wife. I waited about 2hrs and went back outside to test the mower again. This time it stated even faster than the first time. Problem solved and I have no one else to thank but you. So thanks a again for posting this video, it was extremely helpful and on point.
Awesome, glad to hear you're back up and running again! if you ever have the time, a don't mind, consider leaving me a Google review? It'd really help me out. And thanks for watching!
Great video. Just a FYI.... my 2021 Toro 21464 bought last year has corrected that design flaw. Now there's a cutout in the carb bracket to give that choke lever room to move without touching the bracket. Toro should have sent you a thank you!
You are than man! Worked for 2 evenings, soaked carburetor, compressed air to clean out jets. Was about to buy new plastic carburetor. I did a few file downs on the plastic choke lever, Anita started first pull. BIG THANKS.
Thank you very much. This is precisely what was wrong with the Yardworks mower I purchased from Canadian Tire. The fix was relatively easy and quick. Instead of two dozen pulls, it now takes only one to start. Cheers from Ontario Canada.
Watched the video and checked out my carb. Didn't seem like the plastic was hanging so tried everything else first. Last attempt to fix was to file off the plastic. Started on one pull.
Nice video but I drill out the main jet with a # 72 drill bit .025 works great , starts first pull ,,,,even the ones without the auto choke . I'm a 74 year old machinist and I'm like you " Old School "
These e series briggs engines are garbage. I had one -2 years old- it would not run. I have been working on mowers for 60 years. I threw it in the trash and replaced the engine with a 1984 briggs. It will run for 20 years.
Good video. I have a similar problem. De mower kind of started and then engine dies. I clean the sparkplug an it improved a little, engine ran about 3 to 4 seconds before stalling again.. I also noticed oil spouts in the body of the mower near the exhaust... It may need new piston rings and a cylinder... Any comments are welcome
If the needle valve is leaking, it could be flowing gas into the bottom end and over filling the crankcase (which is only supposed to have oil in it) with fuel. I would suggest checking the dipstick oil level, and it's it's overfilled it may smell like gas. If so you need to replace the needle valve
what absolute bs that we as consumers have to put a NEW machine right. B&S blows. I bought this machine NEW in the box and it was missing parts--still waiting for the parts AND I had to pay B&S for the parts.
Main jet getting crap in it, if you held the choke on manually I'd wager it would stay running because of the extra suction, which draws more fuel. You need a carb clean most likely.
Greetings from Italy. Your videos are really interesting. I would like to ask you for technical information on a Briggs Stratton 675EXI 163cc. When the gasoline runs out completely, the restart is difficult, you need a lot of pulling on the rope. It's normal? Maybe I should avoid running out of gas? When I have petrol in the tank, starting is always regular, both in cold and hot engine. Thank you.
I have that exact engine and carb on my mower, mine will start but dies right away, it doesn't spit and sputter or bog down, it just dies right away. Anyone know what could be the problem?
Will I need to worry about gas spilling out in this process? I have a Snapper, used near the end of the mowing season, but it wouldn't start in the spring. Took it back to the shop and they did something to get it working. Now, a few years later it won't start up. I thought it might be the fuel line or carburetor based on what I have read, but am not sure how to do that, and am afraid gas is going to drain out if I don't do it right. Then I saw this video, which seems like it could be an easier fix if I have the tool to file it down.
@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks. That may be beyond my capacity. I was simply wondering about taking that plate off after the air filter was removed. Both videos just say remove the screws and then it is off. If there is nothing to worry about there if my gas tank is full, then I will try to remove it and see if that choke lever is the problem.
Still doesn't solve the issue with these Briggs and Stratton crappy design engines. I am working on a Toro Mower with the B/S 93j02-0167 GTS150CC engine with the plastic carb and I've rebuilt it and made sure the choke lever doesn't rub and cleaned that plastic jet inside and it still is very hard to start. Just a very poor design from B&S. They should of just stayed with the metal Walbro carburetors
I have the same mower shown in the video, but the problem is just the opposite. The engine starts when cold, but often won't restart when the engine's hot. Let it cool for about an hour, and it starts right back up. It's been like that since new. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Hi, I bought my lawn mover Benchmark Engines Brig& Strastton I unhappy new machine had issue When stop machine release safety cable Engine still 20 seconds make the blade one roud then full stop Please tell me the reason issue and how to fix Thakyou very much
Good video, I jumped on it and it appears my BS exi725, being new, had a factory slotted left bracket. They must have seen thge issue. So the choke sticking here was not the problem. But iIt turned out to be the muffler mounted "thermister?" that controls that rod. It was sticking on the plastic. So cold sometimes, it is stuck open. I just used by Multitool to cut the plastic cover to give it clearance. It now no longer catches and cold starts much better. My advice to BS. Go back to manual chokes. The patent has probably expired and they work.
After a full service ,air filter ,spark plug ,oil ,carburettor strip down and clean with carburettor cleaner the damm thing will only start after 10+ pulls so it looks like I will be doing this modification, then hopefully problem solved 👍 So thanks for your great video
Thanks for the tip .I will try this trick tomorrow. I have been trying to get it started for about 3 hrs.I have fresh gas and spark but it just wouldn’t run .It ran all last season . Thanks again I’ll let you know if this fixes it.
I have a Briggs and Stratton on a toro. I have cleaned the carburetor and fuel tank and filed the choke and changed the spark plug. It will start and run good for about 15 minutes and then just shuts off like it ran out of gas. After it shuts off it will not restart. Any ideas?
Mine has a cut out in the frame around the carb for this exact issue already built in. Turned out mine was the engine brake on the back wasn't letting the engine turn over fast enough. Cleaned the trash from it and now it works fine.
That Video of Carbi was brilliant ,I took the filter off , which was saturated in oil , cleaned and dried ,took that plate off , with 4 screws attached And you guessed right , the butterfly appeared to be stuck ,causing the auto choke to be seized on , after filing away on that high spot , making it easier to operate. Flushed out oil ,which was to much ,emptied fuel tank , refreshed , new spark plug at the right setting Cleaned all round top of mower And you guessed , throttle on , worked the cord to the top of piston , one small pull , run like a charm , I let it run for awhile to burn of the oil All I can say is thank you very ,my son is very happy , regards Dave
Good job The internal works of the carb is also an issue, my last attempt was to “ tap “ the carb ( 15 times ) and the mower started, let’s see how long this lasts, it has stalled in the middle of a mow
Probably debris inside of the bowl, then it gets sucked into the main jet clogging it for a while. After it dies, if you let it sit for a bit, it probably starts up again? Watch this; ua-cam.com/video/QPrkCN_Va5E/v-deo.html
Jr Thomas I just bought a new Toro with the 163cc engine and it’s got a cut out for the bracket where the choke comes over so it doesn’t get stuck anymore. The engine year model is 2019.
I have this engine from 2015, after 3 years of use it began to had this problem, I started it one entire year with the chocke stuck, I mean, sometimes even 35 pulls AT COLD, the engine started like brand new when it was hot, something seemed strange. After 3 months of research I found the problem, took off some of the material, like you.It still does start from the first, sometimes second pull and in the winter third pull after 200+ hours, great engine but that is a big flaw
After a frustrating hour surfing the internet for a possible answer I found your video. Perfect. Right to the point and nailed the diagnosis. I had an hour of everyone else posting that the Carb was dirty, the airfilter, the spark plug, bad fuel. All the basics. I just bought the thing. for the fuel/gas that won't go where it's meant to, would it possibly overflow into the air filter?

easier to operate. Flushed out oil ,which was to much ,emptied fuel tank , refreshed , new spark plug at the right setting
Cleaned all round top of mower
And you guessed , throttle on , worked the cord to the top of piston , one small pull , run like a charm , I let it run for awhile to burn of the oil
All I can say is thank you very ,my son is very happy , regards Dave
The other flaw is this engine has alot of issues with head gaskit. Found after my new mower quite after the 7th mow!!!!!!
Their design flaw is that stupid priming system with the non auto choke. Press 3 times it says. Never primed 3 times when it was new.
Good day Boy that was a nice, easy quick fix. thanks
Thanks for watching Don!
Yes. Finally, I have found it! The gem! First video I clicked on and it immediately helped.
Thanks for watching!
Good job
The internal works of the carb is also an issue, my last attempt was to “ tap “ the carb ( 15 times ) and the mower started, let’s see how long this lasts, it has stalled in the middle of a mow
Probably debris inside of the bowl, then it gets sucked into the main jet clogging it for a while. After it dies, if you let it sit for a bit, it probably starts up again? Watch this; ua-cam.com/video/QPrkCN_Va5E/v-deo.html
Good find. Sad they build things like that.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you from Saudi Arabia 👌
😮Ya'll have grass there??
Thanks for the helpful advice l. Much appreciated!
They have redesigned the bracket. There is now a cut out where the choke comes over.
Really? On witch model?
Jr Thomas I just bought a new Toro with the 163cc engine and it’s got a cut out for the bracket where the choke comes over so it doesn’t get stuck anymore. The engine year model is 2019.
Grest tip liminator
Thank you. That was my problem.
Great video! Maybe mentioning to put a clean rag/damp paper towel in carburetor boar to keep filing's and dirt out while doing the repair?
Yes, always recommend a clean work space! Thanks for watching!
