From the few years I have been making altered books- my only piece of advice is to start with a strung book. If the book is glued, the weight of the pockets, pages, embellishments, etc. will pull on the glue on the spine and your book will not last as long as a stitched book. I recently had a local artist ask me to fix her altered book that was made very similar to this one-- it was possible to fix it- but it was never going to look the same as before. As long as it is not something you plan to keep and treasure forever, skip the glued spine and look for a stitched one.
how did you end up fixing it? I know your comment is old, but I bind books, so I was just curious what you did😊 Also very good recommendation to use stitched books.
22:38 Hello :) I want to give a tip, so that the pages do not look like this when you use paint or gesso on them. (I have been making books like this for many years for me to spend time on collage (my glue book) and I have had the experience of verifying which method is better :) If you put glue all over the sheet, to stick one against the other, but the glue is not spread evenly, then it will create a very uneven surface and when you use paint or gesso, everything is worse. You will see all the marks where the glue made contact and you will also see the areas where there is no glue, forming that blown texture (I don't know how to translate it better from my Spanish to English. Sorry. Hahaha). It is better not to use glue on the entire sheet, but only on the entire edge, a couple of centimeters (one inch) and it is better to use the glue stick. Thus, when you use paint or gesso, it will be flatter, once the sheet dries the moisture. It will be better later to make a collage or a decoration ... I hope to help with this. Have a nice day :)
I made my first altered book last year and loved doing it, and I've been meaning to do another one. This has given me the boost to do so again. First thing though is finding a book. I used acrylic paints to paint some of the pages. A few of the pages I left but decorated by stenciling. Thanks again Tina you are inspiring.
When I picked my craft tools after 20 years...the first thing I did was an altered book. I loved it. It's been about 6 months since I've done one...maybe it's time...thanks for the inspiration!
I’m going to have to make one now. Great tutorial! I watched Shannon Green make a glue book and she said, she was told that starting in the front or back with the first glueing of pages then alternating to the opposite keeps the spine from going wonky. Just a though if it’s a thinner book. Thank you for sharing! Can’t wait to see how this goes.
Never done an altered book before so I got an old book out and starting ripping out pages, as we do lol. Got them out and started adding papers. This is perfect for my DT for Tracie. Thank you so much for the push t make one Tina. I think you are just over tired today. We all have those really great days followed by nothing seems right days. Have a lovely evening. Hugs xxx
Thanks for sharing. Happy crafting on a budget💲.Happy everything on a budget 💲. Stay safe. be well. see you in the next video 🎥 and on the flipside. 👼🌹
What fun! I love using altered books as art journals. 😀 I first saw one many years ago when I was at university when someone used an old book as their sketchbook (student poverty, LOL). By the way, I must give you a big THANKS because your channel inspired me and gave me the courage to start my own channel. I take my hat off to you for doing so much, because now I know how much work is involved! Anyway, I look forward to seeing the autumn themed pages in your AB! 💛🧡❤️💛🧡❤️
Years ago I made a JJ for my niece with the sewen in signatures but then never messed with it much again except to make me a few little notebooks. Well Covid brought me back and I'm so pleased you are demonstration the altered book, I could never quite wrap my brain around how they were done and you are laying it out famously. Thanks Tina!!!
Oh thank you so much Robin. Altered books are really fun, I had forgotten how much I love them. Have fun with your journals, no rules, just do whatever your heart tells you x
Thanks for this tutorial. I started an altered book awhile ago and got really stuck. Looking forward to completing my book with you. I don’t know why we sometimes get nervous about doing things we have done before but trust me, you are not alone. Happy day! 🇨🇦🤗❤️
Hi Tina - if, as you say, the glue separated, it's like the tahini problem when you buy it fresh. You can open the glue and using a fork mix it back together. Worth a try. It's a fine video. Don't doubt yourself. It's always fun. Jackie
I’m going to make one of these. I have tons of ephemera made already (lock down anti stress crafting) so now I can prepare a book and go from there for my first journal. Thank you. Love watching you craft.
Thanks so much for doing this tutorial I’ve been wanting to make an altered book for the longest but feeling intimidated I wasn’t sure if I was doing it correctly. However, I did see Ms Joie’s process & didn’t start but after seeing your process I’m feeling a little more confident 😬. I’m excited to see the end result of your book. Thanks for sharing. 🤗😊
Loved this, Tina, no need to apologise when you felt something was not going according to plan, it's fine!. I've made a few altered books but haven't painted pages before. Will definitely try that next time. Look forward to seeing how it progresses.
I did start getting my book ready last week and now waiting on paint to dry..... lol..Craftyirina is one of the first people I watched ..I made a comment one day on a FB post about her using shoepolish and how beautiful it was and Craftyirina commented and sent me a Junk journal she said she made especially for me.. ..this was just a few months ago :)
I love this, have wanted to know how you make altered books and this tutorial explains it so well...I may just have to try this...and I am going to buy your gothic set. I am in the middle of making mini albums for Christmas gifts and will have to wait on journals but I definitely will be making them....Great tutorial and hope to see more of this making an altered book...Thank you Tina...
Oh thank you, altered books are so fun and actually I gad forgotten just how much I love doing them. Btw, I have been having a great time today working with my new Gothic kit x

I'm very excited about this challenge your doing I have never done a altered book, So I think I'm going to try one along with you. You explain it easily enough I think I can do it!
I just picked up a huge computer training (old programming) hardcover book and I wasn't sure what to do with it. I think it may be too big for this but I am learning a lot I can use on all of my next projects! Thanks for the tutorial! teri
You are too hard on yourself. When you think you made a mistake, you fix it and that shows us that we shouldn't panic when we do it. Just keep plugging away and it works out. You do great work and I for one, really enjoy your videos, all of them. TFS
I just happen to tons of paint... I had my brother help paint and still have a couple more days of painting. I am going to take a few days off because the areas of the house is primed and painted and just needs the 2nd coat of paint. We have had some super hot days and I can wait for a cooler day and finish. I did paint a bunch of paper. I have 2 journals to finish before anyone projects. I will send pictures. ❤
Oh Laura, your painting seems never ending! Yes definitely take a few days break from it, hopefully it might cool down a bit before you do the next coat. Oh yes, I would love to see pictures. Love to you x
I am doing an altered book inspired by Joie, you should not feel nervous your projects are brilliant and this altered book is coming along, loved the pocket and flip, I have the digis from last year.x
Wow! I have been wanting to learn how this is done... Thank you as always for the inspiration and taking the time to show us exactly what we need and how to put it together... I dread to think what my mornings would be if I couldn't have my Tea with Tina... Well, it would be like not having any sunshine! That would be just awful! 😞 Take care and have a wonderful day 💕
Looking forward to watching your process. I did my first altered book recently by following Gayle's recent series. It's interesting to see the different methods. Thanks for sharing!
At first I was shocked that you were painting over the text, then I realized this is actually really cool. Almost like shabby chic. I could do so much with this. What a great idea thanks!
Thank you for all of the tips, advice and inspiration 🥰💖🥰 I'm currently working in an altered book and have started the second one so I guess yes it's sort of addictive 🤣🙈

Hi Tina
Love that you are doing an altered book ,what papers are you using for this?x
Lovely to hear from you Tracy, I really hope you are doing great. I am using my autumn kit, the 2020 version of the fabulous fall kit xx

Glad you did this tutorial. How many pages did you end up with? I need to try this method ! How do you keep your pages from looking bumpy?
I haven’t counted the pages, but there are a good amount. They don’t seem to go too bumpy x
Use paint that doesn't contain too much water. Water is what is making paper bumpy!
SHAKE YOUR GLUE. We used to have to do that when I was at school.
Another great idea 😉 x
Shabbydabbydoodah I’m sorry I didn’t mean to shout at you in capital letters.

Good morning Tina xoxo
It is all your fault that I am awake and watching UA-cam at 3:00 AM! But it was time well spent.

Where part of pag tore off the other , I thought added character to work with. 😊
Lol, yes more character xx
What kind of paint? In terms in USA
I use regular household paint, the type that you would use to paint your indoor walls in the house x
So i was born in 1986 so does that mean I'm vintage as well lol 🤣🤗
I hope so because that would make my husband really vintage lol 😆 jk
Lol, yes, I think most of us crafters are! X

Yay, thank you for sticking with me x
Rebecca is my favorite book of all time, what a crime to alter that book! 😡
Sorry xx
🙂🌞🌸🌺🇨🇦
Books over 30 years are retro.
Over 50 are vintage.
Over 100 are antique.
Thank you so much for sharing, I am never sure x
My understanding has always been that 20 years is classic.
i love all your videoes Tina you really help all of us dumballs . But can you please use the word Bought and Brought in the right context. Its been annoyiing me for ever. Bought is when you have bought something. Brought is when you bring something along.xxx
Thank you so much. I will try and do that, sorry that it’s been annoying for you x
Love your work, but I can’t believe you’re using an incredible literary work of art, like Rebecca, to make an altered book junk journal. That’s disappointing. 😢
It wasn’t a really old copy, and I hadn’t paid much for it……if it had been a really old one I might not have used it xx
Aw, tedious and boring
