For future reference, contrast doesn't mix well with water so wet pallets aren't the best for this. But asides the blasters being called E-11 models instead of DC-15A or S variants you did a spot on job
I came here because I love your lord of the rings videos and I absolutely love legion as well. Great tutorial and thank you so much for the amazing content. I cannot express enough how helpful and awesome this channel is. Thank you!
Great tutorial! I love the clone models but the white always seemed so daunting, but you made it look so easy here, looking forward to seeing more tutorials on the way
A few months ago I wanted to play a strategy game like Warhammer 40k, but had zero investment in them. What I did have were many LEGO Star Wars sets, particularly the Clones and CIS. So I set out to build my own simplified version of the strategy game with minifigs and vehicles. It doesn't surprise me that a game like Star Wars Legion exists; and I am happy that this part of the franchise is alive and well!
Duuuude I literally did the same thing about five years ago focusing on utilising the brick built nature of the Lego models to factor into the gameplay. Damage from weapons would be randomly allocated to regions of the ships and then individual bricks would be removed to show damage. Of those bricks were key systems like weapons or shields, the ship lost those systems haha Good fun!
I’m going to use this method to paint my stormtroopers too! Thanks for sharing. I’m gonna dry brush my scout troopers game color off white. I think that will give a cool contrast between the different types.
These look great, thank you. I will be using the first technique on my clones I just assembled and primed! As for the B1 Battle Droids, I hated assembling them, specifically the arms and heads.
I’ve already painted 5 units of stormtroopers, and 3 units of speeder bikes. I still have a ton of white/black units to paint, and I think I’ll be trying out this first technique. Thanks!
Love the work you put into those tutorials, amazing quality on both minis, not much of a difference between them really. Looking forward to some more Contrast, especially if you consider getting back to MESBG with them! Cheers!
Much prefer the first method. To me the first, even before the drybrush, looks nicer than the second when finished. I'd also like to add you're tempting me to get some clones, even though I much prefer the Original Era. Clones are cool, their enemy always seems to be pretty crappy though, as a child watching Ben Kenobi explain the Clone Wars to Luke, I always imagined it was a war between clones.
I really liked this tutorial, I followed it for my legion models, it was great right up until the basing stage. I don't know what I've done differently but my Mars Earth looks nothing like the one in this video. Mine just looks like sand, not gravel, and as soon as I get to the dry bush stage, it just all brushes off and doesn't apply. Even dry brushing the rocks just removed the pigment and turns them white. I even used the same PVA glue.
Great Tutorial!! I will be using the first method on my clones!! I like the shiny aspect of the figures!! Btw you might consider painting a dark hand on the chest of one of the heavy gunners!! That's the scheme of a clone on the series part of domino squad called Hevy!!
Are you planning to take your Clones into a campaign or tournament? If so, are you gonna add details - like Battle Droid pieces, scorch marks, or each clone's personal touches - as proof of their experience? And even if you're not, are you getting the upcoming Phase 1 Clone Upgrade Expansions to your squads?
If you made the drybrush damp on the second part the clones would've come out like the first set and even better as its a slightly shorter paint job doing it that way, it's an in-between of a drybrush and overbrush that stops that chalky look of pure drybrushing
They sure do man! I'm going to do a seperate video down the track on painting squad markings and insignia :) for now just wanted to show folks the basic stuff.
Do the contrast paints have to go onto contrast primer to do their thing, or will will any decent primer still allow the contrast paints to do their magic?
Can you do the first method with storm troopers too? I’ve seen a lot of video of people getting really in depth with other grays, whites and blacks to make details really pop. I’m just like can’t I prime them white, and do your first method for a good result too?
Rewatching in preparation of painting my Stormtroopers this weekend and it occurs to me; why not paint the black 'eyebrow' straight after the white? Wouldn't it mean you can do it without too much worry of screwing up since it's just white below and nothing else? I know the rest of the black is done using the wet blending to make it easier but this doesn't need that.
Would the second technique be better for adding in unit colours? I'm new to painting and I wanted to paint my unit up like the 501st but I'm afraid the wet working (though looking miles easier than the second) will pull and bleed the blue everywhere. Any tips?
Laughing at all the gatekeepers talking about the e11. I bet they wonder why their women or dates won't talk star wars with them. Also, amazing first technique. You gained a sub for life. I painted three units of clones in thirty minutes and they look so Sheek and beautiful.

Great guide Zorpa! Used your droid guide and then this for the clones - although I’ve just started - need your advice I used corax white as a primer and it’s turned out a bit grey - should I do a white scar layer let it dry and then go in with the glaze?
Yeah that's why I use the Tamiya, it's a really bright white. Could layer the white scar but it will take a lot of time, might be worth trying to grab a brighter primer? You can still work up from Corax but your drybrush will have to do more work and it wont look as clean.
I enjoyed the video and the troopers look great. But I don’t really understand what the black contrast paint is actually doing here. Why not just black paint?
The black contrast gives you a really nice natural graduation of tone with naturally forming grey highlights and deep black shadows. Pure Black would be very flat and one dimensional by comparison :)
I'm sure from a science perspective quote a lot, but the main difference is viscosity. The Contrast medium is more of a gloopey thicker consistency, like the contrast paints themselves 😊
@@mrV69 They look similar when dried. However the easiest way to think of it when mixed with contrast paints is the following. Contrast Medium = Glaze Lahmian Medium = Wash
This looks great especially for someone like myself who is pretty new to painting miniatures but I know this may sound dumb but could this method be used on other clones ie Captain Rex or the specialists?
Really nice Tutorial but i want make my clone army not only in black and white. I want paint them like 212th. Is it posssible with clone troopers Gen 1?
@@Zorpazorp Should I use 2 coats of Prime or just 1? I have Tamiya surface primer but I don't know if I need also another for the Contrast paints. I am very knew to painting and I love how you did your clones.
@@Nate-uz8ih as long as your coat is flat and even with good coverage one code should be fine but if it's a little bit thin and you can see some of the plastic let it dry and then give it another light pass :) don't stress too much about the contrast paints basically you just need a light prime underneath so that you can see a bit of that lightness come through the contrast paint and they can do all of that pigment magic there's not really much of a trick to using them :)
You only wet work that step, so I still batch painted, but do those steps together, have the diluted nuln and templar open together and do the steps one after the other then move to the next model.
@@Zorpazorp ahh, that makes sense. I did up my first clone squad today and my god, it was so simple for such a good looking model. Keep up the great work!

What is the difference between technical contrast medium lahmian medium?
I'm sure from a science perspective quote a lot, but the main difference is viscosity. The Contrast medium is more of a gloopey thicker consistency, like the contrast paints themselves 😊
Would it look the same if I use technical contrast medium?
@@mrV69 They look similar when dried. However the easiest way to think of it when mixed with contrast paints is the following.
Contrast Medium = Glaze
Lahmian Medium = Wash
This looks great especially for someone like myself who is pretty new to painting miniatures but I know this may sound dumb but could this method be used on other clones ie Captain Rex or the specialists?
Absolutely Ian!!
Are you gonna be doing a BARC speeder paint guide?
Sure am bro it's in the works!
Really nice Tutorial but i want make my clone army not only in black and white. I want paint them like 212th. Is it posssible with clone troopers Gen 1?
Absolutely, a few orange highlights and you're golden
Can you use Corax White instead of Wraithbone?
Definitely dude! I'm pretty sure I used white in this video no? My go to white is the Tamiya Fine surface primer, but Corax is fine too.
@@Zorpazorp thank you for the advice and great videos!
@@Nate-uz8ih all good man thanks for watching!
Can I use them as Tempestus Scions in 40k?
That's such a cool idea 😁😁
So I’m assuming you didn’t batch paint due to you using the wetworking technique?
You only wet work that step, so I still batch painted, but do those steps together, have the diluted nuln and templar open together and do the steps one after the other then move to the next model.
@@Zorpazorp ahh, that makes sense. I did up my first clone squad today and my god, it was so simple for such a good looking model. Keep up the great work!
Will the first method work with Wrathbone primer?
It won't be clean clean white but it'll still be alright
thanks for the tutorial. I'm very new to painting miniatures (just started with SW legion), so these are really helpfull. question, will the wet working technique work with army painter quickshades?
Absolutely will mate :D glad you enjoyed it!
Nice vídeo
Cheers buddy!!
Could these methods be used for painting White Scars space marines?
Absolutely!
@@Zorpazorp ok nice! How about stormtroopers? Or really any white armor?
@@coloneljoshuachamberlain3788 Any white armour mate :)
