Last summer I had a "discussion" with two roe deer that I encountered while walking. I sat on my side of the field and they stood at their side. Disturbed by my presence, they started barking. So I thought of answering, and barked back at them the best I could. They would bark, I barked back, then they barked, rinse and repeat. It was fun, but after a while I decided I had caused them enough stress and left them in their confusion about this barking human.
💟 🤧 Dear Anna Marianne: Thank you for your "barking deer and human" story...You are wonderful!!! I think they are saying "Please hunters, do not hurt us, we are just cool dogs sometimes with candlesticks on our heads!!!" We have said "one nation under God", and we have set a precedence saying, rightly so, that animal abuse is a felony...so how can we allow hunters to do so? 😥 🤧
@@karenoogjenbiserni1201 Shooting an animal to put food on the table does not equate to actual animal abuse, just a little tip for ya. If humans eating meat is animal abuse, it should be considered abuse for a predator to kill and eat an animal as well.
@@Spooqi Do you consider it abuse for a male lion to kill cubs in its pride? Do you consider it abuse for a human to kill infants? If you're using an appeal to nature fallacy, your answer should be the same for both of those questions.
I have heard that sound before and wondered what it was. We have deers that like to hang out in our backyard. They are very friendly with our two cats who will sit next to them in the grass and will occasionally sniff noses.
I was camping alone in a hammock when I heard some animal rustling around nearby. I shone a light on it and it was a whitetail (couldn't tell if it was a buck or doe, it wasn't antler season) deer. It stared at me for about 10 seconds before sprinting 50 yards back in the woods and making that noise. Scariest thing I ever heard. The scariest part about it is that that noise can be "I'm scared" or "I'm gonna kill you" if it's a particularly angry deer. A hammock is not the best place to be when a deer wants to fight with you.
Puller9 Deer can fight each other and humans by rising on their hind legs and hitting the opponent with the hooves of their front legs. They have done that to hunters. But you're right, a deer's first instinct is to flee rather than fight.
Thank god I found this video, me and my friend got freaked out by these sounds while hiking today. We know there are not dogs/wolves in these woods, so it was a scary as heck to hear it so loud and suddenly.
had a goofy hound once who'd have probably wanted to play (once he was over the shock.) he saw horses as potential playmates (a couple he touched noses w/) although they made no sound.. love how that cat isn't having it.
Ghiaccio Frame: I translate meow & woof as "We're international, we speak." and "Please hunter, do not hurt me, I am just a cool dog with candlesticks on my head!!!" 😭 😥 🤧 🙏 💟
I just heard that in my front yard and saw a deer, but I didn't know deer sounded like that so I had to look it up hahah I thought it was a dog at first
we had a young roe deer in the garden opposite in full daylight a couple of days ago. Last night I was awakened by this same barking so I tiptoed down and opened the front door as quietly as possible, door straight on to narrow lane, my cat in the road and the barking thing ran off just like this one. Thanks for the confirmation. I had thought it could have been a fox.
I don't know how such a crazy sound can come out of such a graceful looking creature. lol. I wonder if deer and dogs ever bark at eachother.Time to look it up.
Hearing this in the early hours when Camping's quite unsettling to be honest. Knew what is was luckily. 😂 Must've wanted to say,"I can smell you whatever you are, even if i can't see you ( i was in my Tent listening with a big grin on my face.) Keep your distance!" 😂👍
I came across one of these chaps last night as I drove between East Grinstead and Hailsham. He came from some bushes and continued to run along the road in front of me in my headlights until he found an opening to run through. Was amazing and I'll never forget it having never seen one before. Infact there were quite a lot of them dotted along the road side eating.... Quite a sight for a townie like me.
I didn't know Roe did this until yesterday... There was a young buck out in the open about 40yds away - aware of me but not bolting. Then my golden retreiver got interested and the buck took flight making exactly the same noise as in this video. My dog was rather perturbed and came back to me looking a bit worried!
Hi, I'm guessing you filmed this chap around March? If so, he's probably not far from shedding the velvet from his new antlers. That bark is a curious one, not quite a warning bark. He might not have come accross cats before so he's unsure what to make of it. Or, seeing as he's in your garden, he'll be able to smell you and is confused/nervous because of all the human scent when only a cat is in sight. That would explain why he bugged out. He's probably about 2-3 yrs old. Great vid.
You'd think I would have known what deer have sounded like.. after having grown up in a house right next to a forest where deer show up in our back yard every week or so.
I Rame Hay, used to get Roe deer in my garden . We had mostly Roebucks , the first ever i saw of a Roe deer was a year after i moved into our new house. That deer had a fawn with it! I was really freaked out !When i saw it!, i did not know what it was! One Roebuck we had was drinking from our water bucket! And one of the last Roe deer stags we had was eating our cherry blossom tree . We had a few does but not as many.
Thats a snort that most of the deer species do, it normally (in the woods) alerts other deer of possible danger, something not being quite right about a situation. Whitetaildeer do it alot. Snorting, wheazing, bleating, grunting.
Ted Gore sent me here, good to know cause in 5 weeks i'll be in the exact area (Patagonia) and for goodness sakes I'd shit a brick if I heard that noise outside of my tent.
Heard it once as a kid in the forest, scared the shit out of me since it is such a loud and raw sound, didn't know what it was. You dudes who think it is fun has never been in the forest
It's funny how short animals attentions spans can be, it randomly stops barking to run a bit, to eat some grass, and then barks again before eating more grass
We were just in Big River here in RI. My buddy and me heard the deer in the woods..we crept quietly, he circled around where we originally heard the leaves and sticks breaking. Next thing we know it took off from behind me..maybe 50 feet a huuuuge buck. Screaming like that. I was photographing a doe and her 2 young and she turned fast Ang also yelled like that and the fawns took off like a bat out of hell with mom

It is so cool I found it here on UA-cam, thank you for posting this! =) Now I know what it was that woke me up, yey! ;D Take care peeps. =)
thats a great vid. this is a common bark in woodland, it is usualy made when the deer is unsure if or where there is a predator. it is basicaly saying i Know you there so you can't take me by surprise. the pronking of the front feet and jumping are to demonstrare the deers strength.
I searched this sound up because I didn't knew anything. But it's 3:34 here and I heard this 10 times louder in my backyard. I shit my pants and couldn't sleep anymore.. So glad I finally know what this sound is now.
This sound was terrifying when I first moved into my last house and heard it for the first time at night. I thought it was a dog in our woods at first, but then it kinda sounding too undoglike, so then I started imagining all sorts of things like a spirit/monster that lived in the creek by our house, or some sort of naked psycho on all fours with a pig's mask or something who was there to terrorize us at night... until I learned it was just a friendly neighborhood deer :p
No matter how still ,or think how well i hide away thewy still seem to know im there ,even from 100metres off .Iknow their sense of smell is better than ours but exactly how much ? Lovely vid.
