Hey Mark! Thanks for the props and thanks for taking this on! And I also want to thank Brian from Wilhelm for recommending it! Brian is an amazing player! Everyone you have had on here is an amazing player. Starting to love this channel! So great work! Love that you are exploring the bass punk world. So many good players. A few fun facts about this song: - Yes, I tracked this with a pick. I play with my fingers too, and I slap. I am mostly a finger player in Lagwagon (Jesse who was OG played with this fingers). - I was 23 at the time of this recording. - I wrote the music for this song and arranged it with our drummer for RKL at the time, Dave Raun. That's why its bass heavy and groovy. - This album was produced and engineered by Pat Coughlin, who also engineered/produced the Bay Area metal band Forbidden (hence the metal production). And he also did a bunch of No Use For A Name albums as well. - I wrote this song on speed (thanks for the recommendation Lemmy) - This whole album was written without Bomer (he quit the band before this recording and new line up) - I tracked 2 songs on this record playing with my fingers and did one bass breakdown with a fretless bass. - I huffed almost all of the dust off in the studio during this recording (sorry The Music Annex, I owe you a case of Dust Off) And I want to make one special request and recommendation for you to do on this channel, PLEASE review "Legend Of The 7 Plies" by the band Cigar. Jonathan Hischke is an incredibly insane bass player that is all fingers. You have to do this tune! Please! Thanks again! GO RKL IN 2024!!
NoMeansNo is very bass-driven punk music with a twist. Sometimes is referred to as jazz punk, but NoMeansNo is certainly more towards punk than Jazz. The River is one of their most epic songs.
"Give it back" by lagwagon is a good one. also lagwagon is related to RKL. all current members were in RKL at one point, Joe Raposo has been their bassist since 2010.
RKL will always hold a huge part of my heart. Not a lot of bands can lay stake to changing the genre. RKL did that. In my opinion, Bad Brains played a huge roll in creating hardcore punk rock and RKL created our west coast hardcore.
Hot water music has an incredible rhythm section. “Drag My Body” would be a good shout. Propagandhi is also great, latest three albums in particular. Failed Imagineer, Last Will and Testament or Failed States are good shouts.
@@dylanbryan2588 This was definitely going to be my recommendation. So many good bass parts but those on Trademark are part of what made me fall in love with the band in the first place
Good to see some Raposo love! Joe is a hometown (San Mateo, CA) hero and plays bass in Lagwagon among a few other bands. IIRC, he was playing a Steinberger at the time. As for RKL, they started as a straight up hardcore/thrash band from Southern California then started moving into more of that AC/DC-tinged metal/HC around the time Joe joined the band. Their well-loved drummer Bomer, probably one of punk’s best and underrated drummer, passed away back in 2005 or so, which made way for Lagwagon.
Lil Joe Raposo is one of the best bassist in punk rock. Good choice! Like others. I’d also suggest Face to Face Bent But Not Broken, Lagwagon Obsolete Absolute, Propagandhi Night Letters (the bassist Todd the Rod also sings lead vocals on that track), Descendents Bikeage, ALL Original Me, and Strung Out The Animal and The Machine. All amazing songs and incredible bass players/song writers.
Yo Mark! Thank you so much for your venture down the the Punk Rock rabbit hole! I always appreciate it when people actual give the props the genre deserves. The Punk Rock evolution since the 90's really escalated into true musicianship. The bands you're looking into have been in the background to some of the best times of my life. Face to Face - Bent but not broken. That song is what made me pick up the bass and learn to play. Scott Shiflett forever changed my appreciation for bass.
Stoked you did this one. RKL riches to rags is one of the most classic punk albums of all time, very very important to modern day punk rock. They were heavy influence on bands like NoFX and Lagwagon and Strung Out who went on to influence everybody.
Let's get Lagwagon for the next punk song followed by Face to Face!!!! Edit: unite behind Lagwagon Lazy!! Upvote! Jesse Buglione deserves the awareness!
This has become my favorite channel lately. I've been going through your older vids and there's so many great songs but these punk bands have been my favorite for a couple decades. Watching you react to the bass playing and then seeing the musicians show up in the comments has been so damn cool.

I've been heavily requesting HWM but starting back in their earlier days, like Blackjaw, 220 years, and Rock Singer, but yeah, we gotta get him to discover some Jason Black
@@robertramirez589 Could you please explain to somebody from Europe what does it actually mean in that case? The guitarist is a pig and is being sued. The band dissolved. OK. End of story. But does it mean I cannot cover the song and listen to it anymore?
I'm not sure why exactly, but there's quite a bit of really good musicianship in punk rock if you happen to know where to dig. Sometimes they play simple stuff that fits the song really well, and every once in a while they find a place where they can put their skills on display.
I’ve always wanted bought punk has great players, but especially so with bass players and drummers. There are great guitar players as well, but some fantastic bass, and great drummers. Also…Propaghandi!
Joe has been playing for Lagwagon for quite a while now, and any time I've seen him play he's using a pick. My favorite Lagwagon tune is "Surviving Callifornia", which is driven by an almost grind- core sounding riff. If harmonizing guitars make you smile, "Born a Wise Man" by Wilhelm Scream will make you giggle out loud, and the video is killer.
Many a brilliant song on Railer, didn't think Hang could be beat but in a way it has and in a way it hasn't. At the end of the day, following their lil hiatus from recording, they've provided two of the most unexpectedly brilliant albums of the past 10 years.

I'm confident that I was one of the recommendations for RKL on your past video. This was nice to see. Now that we are here. I'd like to pitch the band CIGAR. You can NOT miss with that trio. They are very very tight.
I was listening to your Streetlight video then was thinking about RKL but guess what!?! you already did it! you definetly got a new follower man, great work!
I highly recommend checking out rodger Lima’s bass playing from Less than Jake. First album first track “automatic” is a great one. He’s a picker but has rhythm and jazzy chops at 100x speed Matt Wong from Reel Big Fish is fantastic too, check out “trendy,” this guy stood in the back of the stage next to the drummer and just walked the bass for 120 minutes at a time like a machine, he’s got good slaps too. And omg, NOBODY plays bass like Karl Alvarez from the Descendants and ALL. Finger style at Mach speed with insane chops. Any song would do, but “everything sucks” has some fun downward chromatics and licks and “I’m the one” has just, killer bass man.
Your Megadeth comparison is spot on! I actually had this vid on in the other room and thought megadeth was on from a distance Lol the bassist even has the Ellefson tone kinda
YESSSSS!!!! RKL we’re the shit! Seeing them live was a mindfuck. Could not understand how good they were while jumping around so much. Killer guitar team. Just epic. NOFX could not hold RKL’s Jock.
I’m pretty sure (could be wrong) that RKL predates megadeath by 3 years or so. If I remember correctly megadeath debuted in 85 where RKL debuted in 82. Anyway great channel, great reactions and playing. Love what you’re doing here
Face to Face, Bent But not Broken (referring to the bass strings lol) would be so cool to get picked apart by you too🤘🏻 Love the channel man keep it up!
You were once again spot on, there's some metal influence on this and a few other bands from around the same time. A few former RKL guys formed Lagwagon, which is a way more poppier band, but you can still hear that metal creeping in. There was a lot of overlap between thrash and hardcore in the 80s, bands like RKL, Strung Out and Propagandhi kinda took that to this more "melodic" side of things.
Growing up in Santa Barbara County RKL was one of my favorites and Chris Rest was my Guitar Hero when I started playing guitar as a kid. RKL was way ahead of their time. Musically genius. I was lucky to have seen them live many times as a kid. RKL are legend
& some people think of punk as just 3 or 4 chords in a song. (Yeah, a lot of people usually think of the Ramones or Sex Pistols as the first punk bands, but it was already a thing before either band started. Actually, the sex pistols were created by record exec to cash in on the punk craze)
You should check out, 88 Fingers Louie - 100 Proof, very bass driven song. I think you'll enjoy it quite a bit. I've always enjoyed listening to new tunes and jamming along (guitar player/part time bass). I personally want to figure this track out myself. 88 Fingers Louie - 100 Proof
Grew up in the D.C. Hardcore Punk scene and RKL, coming out of Cali, floored us. RKL and Bad Brains have got to be in my top 5 bands. Please change out some Marginal Man out of 80's D.C. Hardcore Punk scene. Which song? Their all my Favorites.
Now that you're down the RKL rabbit hole gotta check out No Second Chance by The Other. Some RKL members, this time Bomber on bass, still ripping though.
There was a pretty significant overlap between the Thrash metal and Hardcore scenes, especially in the early days. Most of the thrash bands were as much fans of punk as they were stuff like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. RKL are pretty frequently lumped in as part of the 'crossover thrash' scene, which basically consisted of hardcore bands that leaned into metal to varying degrees.
Victims Family: Baklava for the bass or Caged Bird for the guitar. Sad Happy: Accidental Family (live!) Panzerballet: almost anything, really. But not punk at all. Keep it coming 😎
What a killer bassline! That intro definitely sounds like a pick, but that breakdown sounded like fingers, that part reminds me of Maiden, What a great song to represent us bassists!! HOTDAYUM!!!!
Riches to Rags is one of my favourite albums. Mainly because I'm a drummer and Dave Raun. But lil' Joe is just ridiculous on this record. And all the other RKL ones. And recent Lagwagon.
It’s also worth noting that producer/engineer Ryan Greene went to work for Fat Mike after making Megadeath’s Countdown to Extinction and Greene helped define the melodic (“skate”) punk sound of this era, producing NOFX, as well as metal influenced punk bands like Propagandhi, Strung Out, and Lagwagon
Ahah here it is!!!!! ❤ man, your face after the first two bass notes made my day 😂 By the way Joe Raposo in a 2022 interview said that this Album was produced by the same producer of Testament.
Another killer punk band with amazing bass playing is the Offenders from Austin, Tx. Check out Face down in the dirt/You've Got A Right. Mikey Donaldson also played on DRI's DEaling With It & also played in MDC. Sadly, he passed away in 2007
RKL what can I say? This album has stuck on me ever since it was released.. I’ve seen a ton of punk shows since 1993 but RKL never passed my way. A show in 1996 in Kontich Lintfabriek Belgium was cancelled so 😭. Hoping you guys get it together in 2024 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻. Peace ❤
I highly recommend reacting to Got The Time by Joe Jackson. It isn't exactly punk, but the bass part is very much in the same vein as what you've been reacting to recently and the song has an incredible bass solo. Anthrax did a fairly faithful cover with the solo intact, but I've always preferred the original.
They re probably tuned down. So the bass can be quickly pass from the open A string (now a G) to the twelve fret. As he often goes back and forth super quick between the two octaves.
The Clash Guns of Brixton is a great bass tone in a punk song, funny thing is, the bassist Paul Simonen is singing and playing guitar while the singer Joe Strummer is playing the bass on this one. It's a fairly simple line but it's great.
Doing this while jumping all over the place. Keep Laughing is my fave. When hardcorepunk was starting to crossover to metal. Hence 'crossover' as a genre. As the metal-part became bigger 'metalcore' became the tag.
Been loving you diving into my home genre of punk rock! As a punk bassist, I love seeing us downstroke-hungry pocket players getting some love. If you wanna listen to a real fun track, check out Spillage by Minutemen played by the incomparable Mike Watt!
Never clicked on a video so fast once i saw this one. Such a killer bassline. I wouldn't be surprised to see the other great Joe, Mr. Joe Principe on your list. Looking forward to the next vid! I would also suggest It Will Not Be Moved - Classics of Love. That entire album is bass porn, haha!

Totally agree, but I prefer the original LP version even more so... because the drummer also played the bass on the LP! Hats off to Bomber! RIP.

So crazy! I was thinking just the other day that you should check out Blocked Out live by R.K.L
great vid dude. i'm pretty sure lil joe uses a pick, at least for rkl and lagwagon. there's a fat wreck band called cigar. dudes a fun bass player.
Cigar is fantastic!!!!!
He surely MUST check "Legacy of the 7 plies", that bass is out of this world!
Ned’s Atomic Dustbin: a band with two bass players! Probably a song off of “Are You Normal.”
Oh yeah thanks for this one! Been waiting to see your reaction on RKL since the Rancid video.
Good content. keep it up!
Sad Happy: Accidental Family (live!)
Panzerballet: almost anything, really. But not punk at all.
Keep it coming 😎
Bomer wrote those early legendary bass lines that influenced NOFX
What a killer bassline! That intro definitely sounds like a pick, but that breakdown sounded like fingers, that part reminds me of Maiden, What a great song to represent us bassists!! HOTDAYUM!!!!
You should also react to Blocked Out by RKL. Bomer Manzuollo plays bass and drums on the song
Yes! This
Riches to Rags is one of my favourite albums. Mainly because I'm a drummer and Dave Raun. But lil' Joe is just ridiculous on this record. And all the other RKL ones. And recent Lagwagon.
I once watched the RKL DVD "Still Flailing After All These Beers" while i was on acid and it was pretty great!
Yes! Strung outs An american paradox was my shit
Ahah here it is!!!!! ❤ man, your face after the first two bass notes made my day 😂
By the way Joe Raposo in a 2022 interview said that this Album was produced by the same producer of Testament.
Soooo stoked you reviewed this… the song rumours is little joes gooder too!!!
Your channel is so great Mark! AFI - Total Immortal would be a nice pick too :)
Thanks so much man! That one is on the list and coming soon!
Probably gonna agree with Bent But Not Broken by Face to Face. Also first time I heard Joe on bass was Give It Back by Lagwagon.
Another killer punk band with amazing bass playing is the Offenders from Austin, Tx. Check out Face down in the dirt/You've Got A Right. Mikey Donaldson also played on DRI's DEaling With It & also played in MDC. Sadly, he passed away in 2007
Cool, ya did RKL!
Moral Crux is a great bass band! Also Against All Authority
Let’s get some Suicidal Tendencies or Infectious Grooves on here! Some old school Rob Trujillo.
The Live "Blocked Out" video of them is nuts! They were pretty young in it I believe.
Peace ❤
Last videos are hitting in the golden era of skate Punk.
So many great bass lines.
What got me into playing bass.
Glad to hear it!
P.s. 500 channels by Choking Victim while I'm on the topic of CRS!
Graham Maby is amazing. Followed Joe Jackson his whole career pretty much, through ska, rock, latin, jazz stuff...and he is good at everything!
They re probably tuned down. So the bass can be quickly pass from the open A string (now a G) to the twelve fret. As he often goes back and forth super quick between the two octaves.
There’s a lot of thrash and metal in this wave of punk thanks to RKL, NOFX, and Fat bands like Propagandhi, Lagwagon, etc
RKL Blocked Out live is great.

To dive more into the hardcore punk side of things check out Sick of it All- Consume & Snapcase - Breaking and Reaching
Reel Big Fish - Beer. I LOVE Matt Wong on the bass
