There is no Rancid without Matt Freeman!!! Lars, & Tim get the majority of the credit, but Matt is remarkably talented! Not a great vocalist, but he actually has a couple songs he sings on, & he does pretty good! But his bass playing is what makes him special 😂
Matt and Tim were both in Operation Ivy, before Rancid. OpIvy is generally credited as the band that brought back Ska, for its Third Wave. They only really had one album, and it is KILLER! Definitely worth checking out.

Really cool to see a bass teacher experience this song for the first time! Interesting how you've known Less Than Jake for a long time but never heard Rancid!
Thanks! LTJ was just a band I found in a vacuum from a PlayStation game. Even weirder is that, I wasn’t able to find who they were because the CD metadata was wrong when I tried ripping it to my computer. I didn’t figure out the artist until a few years later. I loved the few tracks I heard but was just way more caught up on Zeppelin and Floyd at the time.

No joke. 999 comments before mine destroys it. Lol. But I just found this guy and I love him! He is so nice and seems to enjoy listening to the great punk and bass sounds I love so much! Genuinely enjoys it!!! You can’t fake what his reactions are. And he seems super smart and talented. I’m a happy new fan now! Keep up the great work, love it! More ska, punk and reggae please!!!
Matt Freemans basslines have been filling my earholes for 25 years. The dude is a legend. This isnt the first Maxwell Murder reaction video I've seen but I always love seeing trained musicians be blown away by a bass solo in a punk song.
"And Out Come the Wolves" is like a heaven for bass players/nerds. Almost all of their songs here are filled with nice and catchy basslines. Matt Freeman is the (time)bomb!
That chord progression i never realized until you played it at 4:50 is the same as another song on this same album, "Journey to the End of the East Bay"
When they played this live the bass solo was so much longer. Journey to the End of the East Bay is another great song with a lot of focus on Matt's playing.
If you’re looking for another great punk bass riff, check out “Firecracker” by Strung Out. Keep in mind that the late Jim Cherry was against playing with a pick.
It's so cool seeing all these fans in comment section. I grew up in a small town in Alabama and there was maybe 10 of us that knew anything about punk and played Rancid on the daily
This is so great. I love it when musicians who don't (or, don't often) listen to punk check out Rancid for the first time. It always brings a smile! And then they react to Freeman's bass solo and I go, "Right??"
Rancid draw on a lot of different genres including Ska, Oi Oi and Punk. And Out Come The Wolves is just a fantastic album, I saw Rancid at Camden Underworld when they toured the album and it was a fantastic, crazy gig. Roots Radicals and Ruby Soho are particular favourites but there's not a weak song on the album.
Nice!! That sounds like an insanely fun, sweat box show. I played Underworld years ago and it was such a blast and intimate. Thanks for watching, man!!
Love how you explained that simple but awesome solo and why it’s great. That’s how I try and explain Hendrix to people, rhythm, feel, phrasing, he doesn’t need more notes.
So great to see this covered, I’ve listened to so much punk and my fav “bass solo” songs are this tune, Catch a Hot One - AFI Not to Regret- Rancid journey to the end of east bay - Rancid Dead Bodies - Rancid
Give credit where credit is due. Got the Time is not Anthrax’s, it’s Joe Jackson’s. And Joe Jackson’s bass player Graham Maby is one of the absolute best of the era. If you’ve never listened to his other stuff you need to check it out. He’s in another league in terms of playing and tone.
well, sure, but what is to be done? can't go back in time and put Joe Jackson on that pivotal mixCD instead of Anthrax. They were just speaking to personal experience, not defining musical history. @@castlefreak8122
Early Rancid stuff (like this) was often grouped in with ska, particularly because Tim Armstrong (singer/guitarist) was previously in a ska band called Operation Ivy. Also, Matt Freeman (the bassist) plays with a pick
Everytime I hear Maxwell murder, the goosebumps and lump swell. Taking my boys to their first concert. None other that my favorite band Rancid. Proud dad
There is a live version on UA-cam were Matt extends the solo. It’s pretty much the only one that comes up when searched. Way more fun in person, but it’s super cool to see here too. Well worth the watch.
Rancid is amazing, and this album is pure fire. Saying "quick one" is a good description, because Matt Freeman is blazing fast on bass. I totally get what you say about ska; I was always a fan of Rancid, but also loved Less than Jake, Reel Big Fish, and others... The songs Time Bomb and Ruby Soho brought me to Rancid from my old love of the Clash.
I've come back and watched this video like five times the past couple days 'cause it's just so great seeing someone's genuine, first time reaction. I've grown up on this and I _still_ get chills from the solo
I love how you mentioned that the bass elevates the sound because I've always thought that way not just about this album, but Rancid in general. Everyone in the band is worthy of heaps of praise, but Matt Freeman especially.
Everyone has their favorites and will argue who’s the best and etc. quite normal really. In terms of “punk/pop punk” bassit’s though, here are the top players in that genre to me in no particular order. 1. Matt Freeman 2. Fat Mike 3. Karl Alvarez 4. Mike Dirnt 5. Mark Hoppus If you like Matt also check out Operation Ivy, which is the precursor to Rancid. Matt has some great lines on their record
I love that you say it reminds you of ska. Matt was the bass player for Operation Ivy and Rancid had a couple albums that were more ska leaning so you are totally right. Great video
Listen to the whole album. It's awesome. I love the walking bass type lines at 160+ BPM. I learn the songs one lick/riff at a time (slowly) then try to get the tempo up. What a monster player.
I really like this, cool to see someone so masterful at bass hear this for the first time. Been listening to rancid since I was 12 or 13 when I started playing bass and I've been convinced the solo at the end is impossible since. The walking basslineness is a good thing to touch on though because you can really apply it to any genre even if its used more sparingly
Oh man I bought my first bass in 2004 and became a Rancid / Matt fan ever since. I saw them in 2008 and this summer. Best show ever. Those men kicks ass. You have a lot of songs to discover. 🤣🤣🤣
Wow this guy transformed that track. With the help of the low 5th string... Beautiful low shifting down to the next rif.. wow I was totally with you guys when he dropped them in. I've only ever heard Steve play this song yeah there's been covers but never have I heard it be played like that. Man that was nothing sort that amazing this guy is gooooood. I've been listening to that album from it was released.... Ha a while back now lol. But that was an absolute pleasure.
Thanks for the video. You are on track with the ska comment. At one point Rancid was deciding whether to be a ska band or a harder punk band. No joke. I remember being really happy when they decided on punk.

Very similar chromatic walking bass line that plays through the intro and and pre verse but more down tempo and softer. It's great stuff. .... And Out The Come The Wolves is in a league of its own and such a unique sounding punk album. Great stuff and just subbed to your channel!
Really cool to see a bass teacher experience this song for the first time! Interesting how you've known Less Than Jake for a long time but never heard Rancid!
I thought the same thing
LTJ are still just as good as ever! I saw them in Nashville last summer for the first time, after being a fan since I was a kid, their show was amazing and you should see them someday :) @@LowEndUniversity
@@LowEndUniversity Matt Freeman was the bassist for Operation Ivy which definitely was one of the bands that influenced Less Than Jake. Pretty cool.
Well Rancid sure pumps a lot of ska and reggae into their music, and Matt is phenomenal!
watching this with a smile on my face just knowing whats about to come up during the 'part'. Excited
Awesome! Matt Freeman is the best bassist in the punk scene in my opinion! Love this song with the bass solo! BASS SOLO! 🤯 Thanks for the reaction! 🤘
Agreed.🤟🇨🇦
Matt holds the bands songs together.
He’s walking up and down all the time with tasty riffs. 🤟✌️🇨🇦
Thanks so much for the kind words!!
I've been trying to learn this bassline for 20 years. I appreciate your breakdown
I appreciate you as well! Thanks for coming by!
This is the kind of bass line that I just adore.
Sometimes more is more and that is that.
Matt is the best bass player in punk rock ever. 🤟🎶❤️
Not even close to Tomek (Satanic Surfers)
RKL
So great to see this covered, I’ve listened to so much punk and my fav “bass solo” songs are this tune,
Catch a Hot One - AFI
Not to Regret- Rancid
journey to the end of east bay - Rancid
Dead Bodies - Rancid
Rancid made loads of Ska songs. They're awesome
This is the first video I've seen of yours. Great content! And bass playing 👍
Awesome! Thank you!
Had a burned CD with this and Anthrax's "Got the Time" and The Who's "Boris the Spider" as a kid. I think that's what got me into loving bass players.
Aaaahhh, the 90's. I miss mixtapes and burnt CD's lol
@@castlefreak8122For sure but Frankie Bello is no slouch on the bass either.
well, sure, but what is to be done? can't go back in time and put Joe Jackson on that pivotal mixCD instead of Anthrax. They were just speaking to personal experience, not defining musical history. @@castlefreak8122
@@andrewlawBello is awesome
Early Rancid stuff (like this) was often grouped in with ska, particularly because Tim Armstrong (singer/guitarist) was previously in a ska band called Operation Ivy.
Also, Matt Freeman (the bassist) plays with a pick
Love Rancid!! Check out some live versions where the bass solo is twice as long 🤘🤘
Young AL Capone is an absolute nuts song on bass. Love Matt Freeman so much.
If you want to carry on with Rancid then the best place to go is track two of this album. And then track three.
I see what you did there 🤠
Everytime I hear Maxwell murder, the goosebumps and lump swell. Taking my boys to their first concert. None other that my favorite band Rancid. Proud dad
Out come the wolves is in my top 5 favorite albums ever recorded. The thing is bangers front to back.
There is a live version on UA-cam were Matt extends the solo. It’s pretty much the only one that comes up when searched. Way more fun in person, but it’s super cool to see here too. Well worth the watch.
Give it back by Lagwagon is awesome as well, Jesse Buglione is massively underrated as a punk bassist
He was also the Bassist for Rich Kids On LSD
@@BrutalJuice138 you're thinking of the current guy, also a really good bass player, I'm talking about the original bassist on all their early stuff
@@shipwreckedonapopulatedisland
Joe Raposo best bass line:

Goosebumps every time I hear Matt Freeman go off. So glad you covered Rancid.
You're the best!
Great analysis of an awesome song, thanks!
1. Matt Freeman
2. Fat Mike
3. Karl Alvarez
4. Mike Dirnt
5. Mark Hoppus
If you like Matt also check out Operation Ivy, which is the precursor to Rancid. Matt has some great lines on their record
Really cool to see you genuinely enjoying yourself when that solo first comes in.
I love that you say it reminds you of ska. Matt was the bass player for Operation Ivy and Rancid had a couple albums that were more ska leaning so you are totally right. Great video
Thanks so much! I had so many requests for Operation Ivy that I did my very next video on them after this one. Hope you can check it out!! 🙏🏼
Listen to the whole album. It's awesome. I love the walking bass type lines at 160+ BPM. I learn the songs one lick/riff at a time (slowly) then try to get the tempo up. What a monster player.
For punk check out Cigar! Bass player is like the main solo artist through the whole first album. "Cigar"
I love when he says “not that Rancid and Ska are the same” - boy do I have some news for you
Takes me back to the skateboarding, BMX, and rollerblading in the 90s/00s and then the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX game in 2000. RIP, Dave.
One of my favorite bassists ever.
There's a live version out there where he really extends the solo. Well worth a watch
Matt Freeman is the man!! Great bass player!
Glad to see this on your channel! This song rules!
Thanks dude! See you soon 😘
"Fun" sums it up perfectly. I play bass along with Rancid albums all the time whenever I need to just smile and have fun.
Best bass solo I’ve heard…Matt Freeman is awesome! Rancid is awesome…Punk is awesome 🤘🏼
Rancid - Detroit .... great song. Glad you found Rancid brother. They are one of my favorites ever.
Matt Freeman is one of the greatest in my opinion! Amazing to see live too.
Thanks for the video. You are on track with the ska comment. At one point Rancid was deciding whether to be a ska band or a harder punk band. No joke. I remember being really happy when they decided on punk.
Love how you mentioned Less Than Jake because Roger Lima always had Matt Freeman as one of his main influences (and mine)
I’ve never heard the song before. That was wild and fun.
