I love this content because I feel like I'm in that gray middle area as well in terms of skill and progress. Understand all the tech, can pretty consistently execute the techs, but still feel like I've hit this wall in terms of progression that I can't get past. Advice like this is spot on, feel like I learned a lot. Hoping we see more of this.
This title is so visceral it’s got me thinking about tons of top player/commentator combos and the tourney that could follow at the end of the year. Very interested in seeing more of either this or just Mang0 coaching In general.
the n0ne and scar coaching video was fantastic as well. It's rare to hear melee players talk about high level melee skills I feel like and it's always so impressive and interesting
This would actually be amazing if Leff took Chillin on as a pupil and broke some of his old 2005 habits cause in their Apex match he made so many mistakes that were old school mistakes, he coulda have easily won two or more of those games.
@@djhandles3250 Yeah IDK why Chillin never really worked to break his old school habits after he was clearly shown they don't work anymore. A lot of the older players could definitely adapt and be great again but they are just stubborn
mango is actually so good at explaining things in a way that are simple and make sense. like “doing the jordan” to delay your fastfall and mix up aerial timings. makes perfect sense
Breaking things down into digestible and easy to remember parts like that is an art. Unfortunately not enough teachers posses that skill, only the good ones. Many people think Mango is dumb because he isn't an eloquent speaker but that's not even remotely true.
Surprisingly, wise mango came out really good here. Especially when talking about being good at shielding turning into good CC's. This is so entirely true it's actually nuts it was laid out in such simple terms. Good shit Mang, you're a great coach.
This helped me a lot too. I am also a dummy and attack on the same beat and I’m usually the aggressor. My Opponents always shield my dumb approaches and I get frustrated but after watching this video I know what to change. Thank you Mango and scar.
I already saw improvement in my own game after listening to this and practicing for 30 min. Mango‘s got a way of explaining the game that just makes a lot of sense
for people in the comments who might not be aware, there's also videos of None tutoring Scar. the two teachers have very different approaches so you might get enjoyment out of seeing different lessons with the same student
some tldr that i picked up: 1. mixup aerial timings (salient, as I had people basically parry shield me in tourneys due to same beat aerials as mango calls it) 2. explore the concept of being "threatening" 3. recognize advantageous positions and dont give them up pointlessly 4. focus on good shielding, then you can incorporate CC's pretty easily (very natural progression since situationally they can be very similar) 5. After some runs, say outloud what you do well vs what you suck at 10/10 would be called dumbass again
Damn so much to learn from these two. Mang0 giving Bobby props and Bobby telling himself he's a good student is not only wholesome but I think what both teachers and students need to understand in any educational setting. It might just be Scar being proud but he also understands that you're your best cheerleader and it's good to take props when given and elevate yourself to reinforce your behaviors to play better.
This is some of the legit best coaching I've ever seen from Mango. Now that he's succeeded Tafo's legacy, who's gonna be under Scar when he starts to coach? I think Mango does one thing that helps when people are being critical of playstyle, for people like myself especially. He looks at the little moments to help inform the bigger picture, rather than letting one moment take over the big picture. Mango's like "You tech-ed in place for the *ninth time this game*, and it was predictable." Whereas Scar would have been like "I tech in place too much cause I got punished there." Both are right, but who had the right focus, better framing?
"Shields win championships..... Cause if you're not getting hit, you're not getting combo-ed. And if you're not getting combo-ed, you're not dying. And it all starts from that stray hit..." - Mango, 2021
For me after the n0ne coaching, mango was such a nice change. Scar has a better vibe with Mango and Mango brings out the best in him cuz he understands him. I stan the coaching relationship way more. Hope they do the coach commentator tourney.
This is such a cool video! I've been wishing Mang0 would make a teaching video for a LONG time. It's so cool to hear Mang0 sensai explain the game in his way!
20:37 “I’m a good listener! I’m a good student!” This strikes me. I’m not sure if this advice was from this video or another coaching session, but one of Mango’s suggestions was to congratulate himself when he did something right and scold himself when he made a mistake. Here, after Mango validates that Scar is listening- is Scar using the advice from earlier by validating his listening out loud? As a means to condition himself into listening and learning. Maybe or maybe not, but the idea of verbally rewarding yourself for good actions is very interesting when applied to the meta layer of learning. I remember my high school English teacher said she would reward herself with every time she wrote a page of an essay.
I explained this exact logic to a team back when I competed and they actually saw immediate improvements. If anyone likes this vid I'd watch dabuz's video on autopilot. Two very helpful mindsets to consider in practice
YOOOO this video was great! It really spoke to my personal play style and I will be taking a lot of the advice given into my fight games (t7, ssbu). Thank you so much.
3:30 well a small / basic amount to be able to understand the most basic things about it, which he probably does He can be a thinker, he just needs to think properly, not in a way that is discordant with or counterproductive to how he plays well, but that actually gels with what he is able to do, so that he can assimilate and absorb / process infomration the right way in a way that is on the right track
Scarduzio gotta get on that come up. He can be Isai Jr. He's get pure Melee spirit in him. Rocky is there Scar. Dig deep. Find him. Edit: Scar, here's three mentalities to stick to: - Go fast (explosive force) - Don't get hit (see cc as shield and vice versa) - Be a wall (no free passes) If you can combine these three things you are literally an unstoppable force. Think about it homie.
I reckon that Mang0 is actually SUPER smart, not just at Melee either He's not always good at accurately articulating his thoughts - but his thoughts are usually pretty spot on So nice to see it shine through here
Would love to see a coaching session with Scar and S2J on falcon specifics, especially when he has specific questions about frame data regarding things like being shield grabbed/aerial safety
the rocky stuff is more so pragmatic, it is not like an end all- growth mindset is important, scar is not literally too old to play properly, as much as he may be focusing on the wrong things in tehw rong order in order to improve the fastest or to get imporvement going of any kind for the future
The Scar/Mang bromance is so wholesome

I think they talked about this on some podcast with toph, scar and mang0 and i really hope that some pairs form and we get a little tournament
This is the most amazing video ever.

Came from the video with n0ne, now i wanna see PPMD coaches scar, Zain coaches Scar, and IBDW coaches scar.
Let's make him an anime protagonist

The smartest dumb guy in melee coaching the dumbest smart guy in melee. They should keep the series going!

He was talking to Scar the EXACT same way I talk to my puppies when they do something wrong LOL this was great

The tip about slow aerials and mixing up whether/when you FF was so fuckin helpful. almost immediate results, esp vs marth

Dude the positive reinforcement vocalization seems soooo powerful. Gonna try that on all kinds of shit.
Love hearing you talk like this u sound so wise
Been waiting for this one! Scar + Mang0 = Most entertaining content
The part where Mang0 played the training speech & scene of the Rocky Balboa movie made his SSBM coaching session with Scar even more interesting.
"You're smart but you're stupid."
