- How to apply Wing Chun trapping into boxing?
There are a lot of ways to make Wing Chun trapping work in different settings. Although most of the traditional Wing Chun practitioners do not practice boxing, I found trapping quite usefully in boxing if you understand the concept and practice a lot with it.
In this video, we will be going over a few of my favorite ways to implement Wing Chun trapping into my sparring game and how to practice with a partner!
We are also rolling out affiliate training program to everyone now! If you are looking to add in new programs into your school or becoming a certified instructor under Sifu Francis Fong, please visit our website at www.fonginstructor.com!

Finally a guy who can throw a jab and retracts. In stead of all these video's where the attacker jabs and keeps his arm hanging giving the "teacher" the opportunity to do all kinds of fancy things.
Great content and well explained.
U know what’s up lol I agree with u
“Opponent will hit at the head’s last known location”. That is a revelatory idea to me. Thank you!
Never studied wing chun but I use a lot of wing chun tips in my sparring and this is one of them, it's very effective.
I've found out that a lot of wing chun punches and systems work well when in motion and you spot a quick opening and want to place a sneaky punch. So if you are getting pressed, if you are slipping or dodging.
Your right bro! I learned from a english fella that mixed wing Chun whith boxing and it was quite effective in sparring! And yes you are dead right that wing chun technical and dynamics work well! You just have to sift through and analise then work it practically and when u do u can definitely catch people off guard 🤟
ua-cam.com/video/CQgXGnfDXAg/v-deo.html
Wing Chun elements and some techniques ,most definitely work but you have to do them in a practical way .
Also doesn't hurt to like you see in this clip , adapt and slightly tweak them to have a even better result.
In general most of the techniques lack power or proper foot work .But with some slight changes you can correct that
(One could say WC strongest point is also its weak point)
And that's their straight line theory, and and economical movement .
Yes straight center line forward is the fastest and shorter way ,but against someone stronger bigger that's not always the best thing to do .
Also the classical wing chun stance is just to one dimensional and stiff wood like
People need to break the tradition. Nobody questions karate because it's had 40 years in the zeitgeist to mature and we know what we know, but until youtube era wingchun was niche. Now it's starting to be applied and adapted into modern striking methods... I think people fear 2 things. That it loses its identity through filtering out tradition, and that if it's actually practical the naysayers over the last 12 or so years of UA-cam will have to recognize that validity.
@@SAGERUNE thats why Bruce lee made JKD
Only 6k subscribers? This channel is underrated. Wing Chun and JKD are the best encyclopedias for hand trapping. Thank you for this gem sir.
Silat and kali is brother . Check it out.
anything too informative suffers the reality of a dumb world.
Muay thai has the simplest but most effective hand traps imo
Huh? For me it's showing 24k subs
Your in point 😎stop by we do big hits n trapping too
Boxer Roberto Duran had a style that many have said looks like it was influenced by wing chun. He was an amazing inside-fighter.
Lol, Duran wasn't studying Wing Chun. Boxing by itself is more effective
@@mrt445 wow, boxing in a boxing match is more effective...
You are smoking crack. This shit don’t work.
Boxing already has traps in it in the form of Parries
@@raziel2592 Boxing in a street fight or any other environment is more effective than Wing Chun.
This instructor has been well trained and is showing some great techniques. I will give a caveat as a JKD instructor who was trained under Two Bruce Lee students and a well known Back yard student for 16 years; I did fight Muy Thai and was a boxing Gym rat up until I was 50 years old. I sparred with national level fighters quite often. Yes, JKD saved me in many gyms, BUT, a lot of stuff just doesn't work on good fighters. The reason, is that you can train those cool intercepting or following moves and even make them work with your training partners. However Good fighters will not be there when you go to counter and will be angling and hitting you before you can get off. Or they will use counter time, (feinting to draw your interception, then countering you,) etc... Not that JKD doesn't work, It just doesn't work as well when your opponents are good. My advice if you want your JKD to be the best it can be is to spar HARD after training techniques, and,(this is very important,) Find other GOOD fighters to spar against. Find a Muy Thai, mma and Boxing gym with fighters who have lots of fights. Now try your stuff. This will make you much better and will show you what really works.
There is a reason why all the Grandmaster frauds in China keep getting knocked out by that 20 year old UFC fighter that has been challenging them. The fights are then subsequently censored by the Chinese government b/c they hurt the national pride. Try grabbing the wrist or arm of a ufc fighter or boxer. It won't happen period. Doing this stupidity will get you knocked out in seconds. Wing Chun is woo and is as real as traditional Chinese medicine. Great way to get yourself a big hospital bill or killed.
To paraphrase, "If you want to be able to fight against good fighters, you must train and spar with good fighters." True in every form of martial art (including boxing) not just Wing Chun or JKD. :)
agree i feel angles is what really will make a difference .head and body movement. feints and counters . sparring is the only way you can get better closet thing you can get to an actual fight
Wing Chun and JKD are based on adapting and flowing like water and defense is offense. So if you master it you don't have to spar good fighters. Just master the art
Great comment. However the chances of you getting into a fight with a trained fighter are slim. I understand you're training for gym or competition type of thing but a street fight is a TOTALLY different situation.
Kevin is an over all amazing martial artist. His lineage is world class , he works hard and most importantly he is a very good human being and is always willing to help. We think the world of him, and we are so proud of the growth Kevin has worked so hard to achieve. I forecast him to develop into a world class martial artist himself.

I boxed for years and recently got into wing chun because fighting without gloves is a different beast
Well done Kevin Lee you explain very nicely you understand the science of self defense and counter attack really well.
Yes he does. He explained those Technics very well. Sadly, the MMA American Freaks will not agree.
I discovered approximately a week ago that Boxing has its own trapping techniques which are described as "pinning" and are done with the forearms as opposed to the palms like Wing Chun! Will try to find the link.
Lap zau and pak sau are also basic boxing techniques
watch this Roberto Duran video. Best practical trapping I've seen. ua-cam.com/video/_GSw-1Weuzo/v-deo.html

You see trapping in UFC regularly, not from a strict wing Chun perspective, but functionally the same strategy.
Not as effective if you don't train the movements properly, or train sensitivity enough.
Another great application of how traditional martial arts are adapted to fit modern combat and self defence contexts.
Love it! Thank you for more variables to counter jabs and crosses.
Great stuff Kevin - I appreciate your critical thinking approach to adapting trapping skills vs. modern boxing. I agree that head movement and footwork are key, as well as knowing which punch is likely to come next. Looking forward to the next video!
I took kick boxing 25 years , I saw your video on using the hands and elbows to deflect punches and how to like swipe the opponents arm away , I thought that was good I was only taught to punch and kick and absorb punches , but I realized what you were showing would work and is much better than just absorbing blows
So trapping in boxing is called holding and definitely illegal, if you're doing the first 2 tips you're going to need to keep the arm on the outside of your glove to avoid that.
The 3rd tip is literally a jab parry, it's a perfectly good technique also taught in boxing so that works pretty well. That one is great advice.
Great work! Some excellent sparing tips here! Thank you.
Cool stuff. Slip and counter is a basic boxing move, but I really like how parrying is taught here, I will try that little finger flick next time I’m sparring (boxing that is). I’ve made some other stuff of Kevin’s work before.
Problem is that often people parry with these huge movements slamming the hand down, which is way too slow and leaves you open especially if they feint. That finger flick keeps the hand still in guard, so even if they fool you with a feint you’re safe. It’s really hard to get rid off this mental image that you need this massive movement (I’ve seen JKD people do those as well, so I don’t think it’s always taught like this there either).
In terms of Wing Chun working in boxing.. I never trained any Chinese arts and I can watch a video and make that stuff work based on what I know from boxing. It’s just Chinese boxing and not too different from the old style of English Pugilism. Boxing works in boxing, who would have guessed? But it gets shitty rep bc of all the movies, mysticism and sometimes blatantly racist orientalism. It’s not flying dragon fighting monkey magic woo woo, it’s just a way to parry, slip and counter.
I remember some 7 years ago I was wondering why won’t boxers implement wing chun moves into their boxing, since is all arms and fists moves. I’ve been getting back to the martial arts topic and I’m glad to see that people are making my 12yr old self happy lolz
Met you at a seminar, so glad you have this resource. Thank you for the content, I will drill this for sure.
Nice work Kevin, enjoyable to watch, keep it up !
This one of my favorite wing Chun break down pages he's pretty informal
nice vid. the sticking technique in boxing is called riding the punch. I don't see this technique taught much anymore and glad you showed it here
Thank you for your tips. I just started kickboxing after having trained WC for many years and thought I couldn't use any of it anymore.
First time watching your tutorial . You are a great teacher and your combo drills are so good in a real fight . TX
Beautiful demonstration. Understanding the center line is key to your technique. Outstanding.
Great angles and flow
And slips .....
😁❤👍🤙🙏❤🤜👊🤛
best jkd video ive seen in years. great
His body positioning is key, it’s like good chess moves. Centerline control is the essence of Wing Chun. Really cool strategy!
Good stuff 👍🏾👍🏾I find that during the late 70s during my boxing years I actually combined my martial arts techniques , shotokan / wingchun and wrestling traps I never new this was rare to do or see it and Done successfully although I had at least 10 years experience in martial arts before I even boxed one thing to note down is understanding the body language and how boxers set up there faint’s foot work and Strategies speed and timing But great video 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾 we should talk thank you 🙏
Thank you for this video. My specialty for the past 16 years has been in boxing and I can see so many similarities to what my late trainer taught me. I saw some techniques that he did in this video that mirrored what my trainer taught me in the boxing gym. I was blown away because it was like my trainer unknowingly was teaching me Wing Chun techniques.
SiHing Kevin Lee knows his material well! Shoutout to Francis Fong Academy & Inosanto Academy!
Thanks! As somehow a beginner, I really appreciate your videos!
Gotta say that our boy Kevin here has some very good hip movement. Everything looks so fluent even from standstill or* combination work. It's so solid. Keep up the good work man !!
I love your videos man, you are a great martial artis and master!!!!!
You guys are excellent! One of the rare WC guys that demonstrate good striking mechanics and concepts from boxing and other martial arts. I use the third combination a lot in sparring, personally.
You CAN'T be a Wing Chun guy and mix it with anything else!! It destroys the fabric of the Wing Chun system, adding flaws and stiffness.
Thank you so very much for these unique videos and the teaching of these techniques. Very informative and comprehensive.
Very good explanation and break down.
Keep kicking !!
This was very informative. Instinctual I tend to do this technique you were discussing but not as clean. I appreciate the demo and will review multiple times.
I’ve always wanted to learn Wing Chun and teach myself to implement it to my MMA game this my friend is something basic to work on mean while and only makes me more excited for some real traditional wing Chun
Great technique👍🏽 well done
Amazing explanation!! Thank you!
Where is your school? Great demonstration.
Awesome job showing the techniques!!!! Reminds me of days learning escrima.
Saw you on Sensei Seth, really liked your vibe so I'm here.
Maybe was I too much learning Kali martial art, but seeing the application of Wing Chun Trapping into Boxing makes realise that Kali's move set would be good added to the trapping application.
It does work. It's not always going to look pitch perfect. Fights become improvised with a mixture as it progresses. Just like the sandwiches on commercials look beautiful, the actual product doesn't look as good but gets the job done
It all comes down to muscle memory. When have trained long enough the moves become second nature.
Very nice explanation of functional wing chun trapping.
Looks nice. I'd like to see if it really works in real sparring or combat
Better without gloves, but have personally been popped by strikes set up with good trapping skills, even with heavy boxing gloves.
Wing Chin is a theoretical martial art.
Probably not maybe unless your fighting someone using the same style of punching the guy is using.. but most street fights will be aggressive wild punches coming from random angles
@@RealityWorldNMuzikin that case martial arts including boxing, Muay Thai etc should not work either
Nice clear instruction...
Very good video.
This is like an advanced application or idea to standard boxing partying. Truly an intercepting fist.
Bro that was sweet 🔥lesson
I started Muay Thai just 5 months ago, having practiced Wing Tsun earlier in life. Starting out in Muay Thai I naturally linked the connection between the two styles; the squared up stance. I immediately started thinking if there was some way to leverage my experience in Wing Tsun. And there is, of course. The only hurdle are the huge gloves. But I’m still going to experiment in some safe ways to “pak-punch” and use “chi-sau” technique when entering with elbows and into clinching.
This video was eye opening.
I've been thinking about this for a long time
Phenomenal video! Bruce Lee would be proud!👍🏾👍🏾🌝
Thank yoe Mr Kevin Lee - this was a good Video
The best thus far
thanks for the teaching very usefull to me
Very good explanation. Excellent demonstration for boxers using trapping. Thank you
Excellent 💥👍🏾 Thanks
I would like to try that in person and show you as a boxer that doesn't work
Love the breakdown especially on the sticky hand (3rd example) great variation!!
i spent some time trying to find a way to intercept incoming straight punches like jabs and crosses. found two things had success in sparring. first was to anticipate or bait a punch and fire back simultaneously with a slip and a punch as a single move. the second was to aim for the shoulder of the incoming punch as it's a shorter distance to travel and both stops the incoming punch and opens the guard for the follow up counter. most of the more elaborate trapping techniques are very hard to do against a trained fighter trying to punch you in the kisser, in a heated exchange simplicity is your friend the more steps your technique has the more chances you have to botch the execution
Thanks master for this useful video.
This is a very skilled young man. Very good stuff.
Thx Kevin, will work on those in the gym
Solid applications! Very well explained and demonstrated.
Beautiful 👏🏾💯
I have sparring on Friday, I am trying this
👏🏽👏🏽 well instructed
Очень хорошая технология!
Awesome video! I subscribed
Lets see u do this while sparring
Wing chun is just the application of the triangle in diverse situation... Fighting is fighting
THAT WAS DOPE!!
those subtle little hand redirects are cool. Jut Sao would be another technique I would recommend against a boxer as it is v effective in destabilizing the opponent and if no gloves then jut biu jee combo can be v effective.
Wow. I have to stay tuned with this.
Wise advice many thanks Sifu
GOOD COACHING!!!
Great info!
That’s my go to as well
Great stuff. Excellent
I do Wing chun and jeet kune do ( along with kenpo 5th degree black, Hapkido 4th degree black and more) but I prefer wing chun and jeet kune do. WOULD LOVE to be able to train with you--- you have a talent for TEACHING-- one of my other intsructors was VERY good- but his teaching lacked the simplicity and POINT OF FACT advantage that yours does-- and I hope you have videos available.
Thank You very for your time and knowledge….
I like that he is display how to meet the point of the punch and even though it looks like a regular block or slap down he's actually usually using Fook Sai
Great stuff. Enjoying it.
Nice I use that “sticky “ or deflect using the right hand alot in sparring. Especially great as a southpaw fighter I get it a lot. I tend to use a lead check hook too.
on vous remercions de vos demonstration !
thank you very much sensei
Sifu Bruce would,be proud🙏👌💯🔥👊😎💪🇵🇭🇺🇸
Excellent
You should do an online program about this for the people that cant train with you so interesting and useful to add to ones arsenal
Great. 👍👍👍👍👍
Great instructional video!
5:08 Sam Tim .. first hand in checks n hits.. very nice
Excellent video
Where do you teach?

I believe this guy is going to be doing a seminar at a Muay Thai place in west Philly in April...
Excellent. Thank you.
