Elevation Gain: 2755m
Total Time: 14:34 (including sitting in the car for 20 minutes)
Length: 27.3km
A little over 14 hours car to car. I ended up scrambling to the side of the first chimney crux, likely low 5th class. There's a water source up past the tarns about 1500m up that has runoff from the glacier. Bring a headlamp.
RIP to Wulf2, who built this trail up!
Brandon, you freaking hero. Absolutely amazing hike and the video!!
Seriously impressive video! Used it as a guide for summiting myself on the 12th October, started and finished in the dark.
Thank you!
Glad it helped. Honestly once I was in the clouds I randomly went upwards, definitely not the proper path!
Was there much snow up there that late in the season?
@@BCHiking Was crystal clear for me and we still chose a random route getting up the rock wall towards the golden door. Ended up discovering the gulley with the ropes after we were already on top.
There had actually been some light snowfall Wednesday night but was mostly gone with the heat of the following days, other than that the only snow was the glacier to the east on the final approach!
Damn lucky! I didn’t even end up seeing the proper way on my way down. Glad you had a great time out there!
I really enjoy this video. Great capture. I watched it a dozen times by now. I had similar weather when I did RR.
It’s always cloudy up there!
This looks simply amazing. I did Golden Ears in summer 2021 alone and camped at the top, but it was too foggy from fire season. Hoping to camp near the summit of Robbie Reid in summer 2022 with great views like you had! Thanks for sharing.
Seriously fantastic. Must have taken a lot of extra time to constantly set up the camera and then retrace your steps to get it. Such commitment. Very well done!
It added a little over an hour and 300m of extra elevation gain according to my GPS!
@@BCHiking Incredible dedication to be willing to take that extra time and effort just for us to be able to enjoy your adventure. I most definitely appreciate you dedication to my pleasure. Thank you.
This is awesome man, Reid has been on my list for years. Thanks for reawakening the fire 👀🔥
Thanks! Be prepared, it is a very long day out
I was thinking of doing it in 2 days and sleeping at the tarns before the summit push. Would you say it’s more worth it to do it in one go or is sleeping up there a good option?
@@ericbates3009 The forest is pretty steep so that part would be hard with a heavy pack, but I'm sure the tarns would be a great place to camp!
Me and my friends are considering doing Robie Reid this summer. Any particular tips you'd give? I've been studying your video many times xD.
Is 5:20 and 5:40 the same, continuous scramble section? I heard there're two scramble sections that are considered class 4 scramble.
Btw, just heard there's a brother who had an accident at Mount Harvey lately. Please stay safe while solo hiking.
I’d recommend starting early (before sunrise) and plan on being down after sunset unless you’re really pushing it.
Even on a clear day, the summit push can be cloudy (happened to me both times) but the second time I just went through the clouds.
I just randomly scrambled up at the first “crux” of the route (the chimney section), probably 500 feet left of where I was supposed to be (before the notch @4:20). I didn’t film this section. I was just loosely following gps tracks and scrambling up (5th class?) with no visibility until I got back on track.
The first time I went up, me and my friends were nearly hit by microwave sized boulders (within 5ft of us) tumbling at us. We turned around after that since there was no visibility up ahead.
The section at 5:40 is right after the section at 5:20! It’s a bit loose but all pretty easy (but exposed) scrambling.
Have fun! This is a relatively big hike fitness wise but super fun up top. Everyone I saw that day brought ropes and helmets.
@@BCHiking Thank you for your response!
@@awlongman No problem! Good luck, it's a long one
Wow, fantastic video! Makes it look easy
Thanks Rick! It wasn’t
Really a masterwork, this video.
Great video Brandon, you killed it!
Thanks Luke! Thanks for your Alpha Mountain East ridge video, I was planning on doing that one this or next year
Great film
Thanks!
dude I just went camping up there a week ago by myself ! then I saw your channel. super cool dude ! maybe ill run into you one day
Oh sweet! Yeah come say hi if you see me
Great video Brandon
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this
very good video, concise and beautiful.
This is really well done, thanks for sharing! I'm hoping to do this soon as well and the footage of the scramble and especially the downclimb are really helpful.
How was the route finding on the lower sections? Looks pretty bushwacky, wondering if you had to do any backtracking?
Definitely bushwhacky near the top of the forest! I had a gps track with me from AllTrails throughout the hike. Without it I probably would have gotten a little lost in some sections. Make sure you start early and bring a headlamp!
Unreal video
Great video. You went up about a week before we did. But we had to turn back at the 1500 meter mark due to bad weather. Going to do it again this year looking at late July need the day light.
Thanks! Might be quite snowy still at the top (around 4:00 in the video) in late July. Once you're at the bottom of the forest coming back in the dark isn't difficult to navigate, especially with gps tracks.
great video! excellent angles and good music selection.
Beautiful!!!!!!!!
This is awesome.
excellent video. I just got back from Hoover lake viewpoint trail near Mission. I sat looking at Mt Robie Reid hoping that someday I will be fit enough to hike it. I am 55 and Hoover Lake viewpoint was a challenge enough @ 12K and 517m gain...
Thanks! It took me years to be confident enough to attempt this one
@@BCHiking How do you normally prepare for something like this before attempting a solo (especially navigating in the dark)?
@@wilkin7299 In this hike I had attempted the route a year before with a couple friends, coming just short of the summit. Also, I carry an InReach with me to track my progress. For this hike navigating in the dark wasn't too bad, as I knew once I made it down to the lake I could follow the service road back up to the car in the dark easily. It helps to have some sort of GPS track to follow, I was using Alltrails on my phone.
Really great video!
Beautiful!! Were you inspired to do these types of videos by Kraig Adams?
He said he was yea
Tought trip. Is this a new route up because I had always that the approaches to Robie Reid and Judge Howay involved a boat up the lake?
It’s definitely a long day. I believe sometime around 2008 Wulf Pirang built the trail that you see at the start from the Florence Lake FSR. Judge Howay still requires a boat across Stave Lake!
My gosh fellow Brando! Robbie reid has been on my list ever since I saw mountain man Mike do it. You're making me sad the season is ending! Amazing video, I appreciate you sharing your experience.
Edit: I suggest you try dennet/Munro lake, or if you like peaks conway peak is definitely a less taken option. Remember you dont always only have to upload the big peaks :)
My hands get sweaty every time you get to a climbing section
Same dude
How long did it take to get to the peak from the start?
I think around 6-7 hours
Have you tried climbing Mount Judge Howay before?
On the list!
@@BCHiking noice
@@BCHiking have you climbed it since?
@@mountfairweather Nope haha, still looking for a boat. My broken toe put a hamper in my plans this year, but hopefully I can tick more off the list in 2025
the best
Thank you!
any winter hikes on the horizon?
Thinking about Wedge as I've heard it's a better winter ascent than summer, but I need to grab some snowshoes first
castle towers next?
Maybe next year, it's looking like there'll be snow soon
Dude.
dude
Do Judge Howay one day.
Gotta buy a canoe first but yeah it’s on the list
