I cannot believe it, my old impreza as if it's come up on UA-cam!
The throb of the engine is actually the unequal length manifolds, so it pushes the exhaust air out the back at irregular times. Gotta love it ;)
The sound is great and unique but, the turbo-lag it's insane, after 3000rpm
people might say otherwise, but i think a subaru impreza is the best performance car for UK roads

The best looking Impreza of all. The Impreza is a car that you can modify as much as you want that you always know its an Impreza.
I've always loved these cars. I had one new back in 2000 (US 2.5RS), traded it in for a 2002 WRX. I loved that car too, but I missed the body style of the earlier years. I ended up selling the WRX and got a truck. NOW I just got another 2000 2.5RS but with a WRX swap. So basically it's what you have there. LOVE IT!!!
That kind of scooby is my fav car, my uncle owns one and when he took me for a ride, it was AWSOME. THE ACCELERATION, LOVE IT
old Scooby's sound the best. I remember there was a yellow import estate when I was a kid it sounded like it shook the ground that's what made me fall in love in the sound about 20 yrs ago
Grew up with my uncle having multiple subarus so I've always loved them. Definitely on my 'to own' list

Nope fast and furious inflated these cars beyond what they are worth especially with the one Paul Walker drove. If it weren’t for the movie and Paul walkers passing, the evo would still be a similar price to the GC8. The two cars are not priced differently due to quality in fact I would argue Subaru especially back in the 90s/00 (particularly the EJ20/22) were a lot more reliable than Mitsubishi. The GC8 is an iconic car and can be attained for half the price of an evo, obvious choice for me..
evos of that era are more comparable to the subaru sti versions as both had around 280 bhp,these turbo 2000s had around 217bhp.both great cars
I've owned 2 of these both over 300bhp and it's easily the best car I've owned . Although I did total the first one into a lamp post at 80mph 😞

I've owned a few Scoobies with Prodrive exhaust - sounded great.
the weird noise you mentioned is because of the unique unequal header of all the wrx.
This is the classic rumble noise from a subi
the reason that evo is more expensive than the impreza is because this isnt the top spec of its class, there are only a very rare number of sti version of the gc8(this generation of impreza) in the UK. The sti version comes with 280hp which is the same as the evo.
The reason why all the jdm cars in the 90s are 280hp is because the policy of the japan government at that time, all the road going car must not exceed 280hp in stock. Thats why all the gtr, nsx, evo , sti are all come with 280hp

my mums ex had an old silver 2000 turbo! loved it! I've been in alot of new ish Subaru's and sports cars such as the focus RS with bits on it ect but the old 2000 Subaru is the best car I've ever been in without a doubt! always got attention, use to eat other sports cars up as it was 360bhp haha loved that old thing!

Nice to finally see you in a Scoob, Jamie. Keep up the good work. Scoobs are probably 'cheaper' because Subaru made a lot more of them than Mitsubishi did with the Evo. Imprezas were properly mass-manufactured while Evos were only made in more limited numbers due to the need to satisfy homologation. A case of supply and demand…..

All Subaru boxer engines have a rumble. Even the newer ones with equal length pipes (like on the BRZ/GT86) have a rumble to an extent. Sounds good while being relatively quiet.
The Evos were a lot more expensive when new I think. Also they can cost a lot more to maintain.

The 'whiff of chav' comment is so true, probably why they're so much cheaper than comparable Evos. So many older Imprezzas were butchered during the Max Power years and horrendously modified.
I was always into my evos since little kid now I feel like as if evos gone in the bin for me don't get me wrong I still love them but subarus have grown on me a lot since time has flied by and at that time my dad used to have subarus but had no interest into them was more of evos and now its changed alot for me lol I'm 17 right now after Im 18 that's when I'm going to buy my own impreza Uk2000 can't wait man it's the car that I'll keep forever man👌

This video just appeared in my feed. This noise that every Subaru engine makes is not because of the boxer engine. It's because of the uneven length header. Remove that and install an equal length header, which better benefits performance and engine longevity, and hear that distinctive sound go away.
Old people don't like loud cars, that's why you get that look.

evo's hold the money coz there's not as many built compared to the subarus.
I think it's also because the evos are seen as more desirable, so are generally better looked after

2000 Turbo is the lowest spec Impreza but i love mine 😂 Was only £2k. P1 blue and looks pretty aggressive. The gearbox went so put an sti one in and made a massive difference at 1bar of boost. Td04 very poor imo. Mapping mine and bolting a td05 on soon. Great vid 👍

Always had a soft spot for these, they're brilliant cars for the money they are currently. It's just a same a lot of them are abused with the boost turned up full which makes the engine shit themselves after a year or so.
I'd personally rather have an Evo.

The impreza came to the UK officially for a good few years before the Lancer Evolution was imported by Colt Cars Ltd.
Also you could buy the impreza in various states of tune, I think the turbo model started at 205 BHP.
STI imprezas weren't officially available until years later.
Grey imports were a different matter of course, for one of the most crazy imports check out the Impreza s201 STI version.

Hi just wanted to say the reason they have trouble with the rear arches rusting is there is a small water drain hole on the inside that can get blocked over time which in turn makes the water hold in the inside of the wheel well and can get splashed around the boot area. had this issue with my 1998 type r impreza.

performance play a part in the price difference 210 vs 280bhp and I think evos are cheaper go get power out of. I'm more of a Subaru fan so would prefer one even if they were the same price

Got a real soft spot for the 1st gen scooby, they're a bit tainted though. They're like the car an old chav gets, like a 35-45 year old that would have owned a Saxo with a mega body kit on and neons but now they've grown up and got a scooby.
Odd stigma but it's keep me from owning one.
The bugeye one is horrible too but the hawkeye and blob eye is nice
I think the stigma attached is why they're cheaper than the evo too, makes sense.

bugeye has about 3 different styles of lights, the base model wrx ones are awful, but the prodrive ones look sweet

They're honestly the most fun/performance you can get for the price, only thing that comes close is a VTEC Honda.
I know exactly what you mean with that engine sluggishness. I've let a few people drive my car and the less experienced drivers tend to struggle. Just requires you to not let it drop under boost too much, especially first gear. It even indicates to rev out first gear higher (reccomended 24 kph/14mph) in the owners manual.
Awesome Review Jamie, i feel that you captured the stereotypical boy racer emotion it invokes when you boost through a suburban street, pissing off all the old residents.

215bhp in a standard turbo 2000.the wrx imprts are 240 then in 96 it went to 260 then 98 280 for the classics
260 rb5 , 280 is gc8 wrx sti
lol wat? an rb5 is 215 unless it has the ppp on it, the rb5 is jsut a uk turbo with special paint an prodrive bits stuck on, this is not an sti or wrx, this is a turbo 2000 215 bhp standard

Evo's cost more only as they are just so easy to make power from the 4G63 motor with simple bolt ons and a tune. They are somewhat to me are more bonkers to look at and are so i'm told mental in the bends and to me as i'm looking at getting either is that evo's are kinda rare. But a wrx is a damn nice family car and I know it would be nicer to live with every day. If you got the money then go for an evo, then the subi is a somewhat cheaper alternative unless its an STI. Thats my two cents

Ben Chesterman Aye, but tbh you could just buy some 4 pots from an STI, STI seats/after market buckets, STI springs+shocks and a TD05 turbo and still probably come up trumps on value for money overall and with the spare change get some sweet internals etc for the extra choo choo all the price of even the cheapest evo 6

it's hard to find a four door impreza this year in the US. of course we didn't get the wrx, but a crappy Na motor that blows before you get your first rust spot.......

my 2005 wrx isn't too bad on fuel ⛽ I can get 28mpg and 350miles to full tank if driven very very carefully lol but I get about 24mpg n about 280-300 miles to a tank on adverage not bad to say slower more boring cars like golf gti, mazda rx8 n focus St etc r worse on fuel
