I was searching for a while and it came down to two, this guy and a more expensive one in a colour I didn't really love and in need of more mechanical work. Great video, I think it's the best review on the GC8. I've got one for 2 years, original except catback exhaust, 17' WRX7 wheels and running E85. Please do other videos about this car (repairs or just what it is to run). Cheers
Hey spilner959, thanks so much for the kind words and positive feedback - I really appreciate it and I'm stoked you liked the video. Cool to hear about your WRX! What colour? What are your plans for it? I was actually thinking of perhaps doing a couple of update videos on this and my Holden Ute - the Ute is still stock, but better tyres and brakes and a few other goodies have really improved the Rex. Cheers and drive safe :D
Really well made video, this is probably my favorite car. I wish I could get a white gc8 spec c in left hand drive in the states so bad you have no idea
@@DaveZalstein gcs in the states were always non turbo 2.5rs's. If you want anything cool gc8 here you have to either build your own or wait the 25 year import rule but then also have right hand drive and deal with headaches with dmv because the vin isnt long enough on japanese cars to meet usdm standards. Also imports in america can be kinda dodgy even if they do meet the 25 year rule.
Hi @ChristopherBurton-u4l, glad you enjoyed the vid. I actually ended up retrimming the glovebox, centre console lid, and top box myself, as I've dabbled a little bit with that stuff before on previous projects. You could have a crack yourself or try and find someone local perhaps. Good luck either way and thanks again for watching!
Cheers @MrMechanic45, not sure where you're located but this was a custom exhaust made up by the legends at Dandy Exhaust here in Melbourne. Enjoy your new car and have a ball driving it :D
Hey Jorge and thanks for your comment. It's huge fun and especially at such a cool track. The circuit is called Bryant Park - also known as Haunted Hills - and it's owned by the Gippsland Car Club: gippslandcarclub.com.au/ Feel free to check out more info and if you're ever in Melbourne one day, perhaps you can come and check it out. Take care, stay safe, and all the best mate :D
very cool. i own a gc8 myself (sti type r v4) and i felt exacly what you mean when it comes down to the steering :D its really not great when you drive it on a highway for example pretty much dead around the center with a spongy feel to it even tho i have ofcourse an sti rack. i also own a fiesta st 150 and it has a briliant steering compared to my subi. my goal is to get the steering feel of the subi on the levelbut other then that and the rather harsh ride its such an awesome car i abosolutley love it. prices get kinda redicolous tho especially for a coupe like mine
Oh definitely man, don't sell a Type R Coupe now, no way! The thing is already worth plenty and will keep rising in value. Have fun in it, drive safe, and thanks for the support :D
Great honest and realistic review Dave 🏆... May I ask, in reference to the Owner's Manual, does it specify RON95 Fuel or RON97 or RON98 for the stock OEM engine (Aus/OZ Spec)? Thank you Dave and all others whom assist me with this question 👍
Hey @pesuruhjayasumpahmelaka, thanks so much for the positive feedback - always very much appreciated. Aussie-delivered cars were recommended RON95, however most owners stuck with RON98, given the higher octane fuel generally used in Japan. Hope that helps, cheers.
Thanks for your valuable reply Dave... Really appreciate it 👍... That's good to hear indeed as our officially imported Imprezas (GC8, V7, V8 & V10) here in Malaysia are exactly same spec (stock) as those imported into OZ 🥰... Yes, I've run my PPP Specced (from factory) WRX V8 on RON95 too & they've been running great without any knocking or any adverse mechanical side effects 👌... In fact I've even tried running them on RON100 here for a month (about 3 tankful) and didn't subjectively notice anything different in the performance of my WRX 🤷♀️... I guess, maybe the OZ, NZ, UK, Malaysian, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand & Indonesian officially imported Impreza (all the RHD drive units that are not JDM) have been optimised and factory tuned to run minimum on RON95 even though it's stated on the fuel filler cap to run minimum on RON98 🤭 Anyway, once again, thank you kindly for your valuable feedback 💪 Happy New Year 2024 and Cheers! 🥂
@@fergusbuster4695 Practice makes permanent mate, but drive safe. As for an old WRX being a good first car... tough call. They're getting pretty pricey at this point, so maybe something less costly and 'special' might be a better bet. That said, if you can find one and promise to take good care of it, go nuts :D
how did you pick this up for $1500? these are currently selling over $10k-$15k? I bought mine 10 years ago and im just the second owner, its pretty much identical spec to yours except with the wrc blue paint in just as bad condition lol.
Haha, yeah the paint's not great but fortunately that doesn't make it any less fun to drive. I got this guy three years ago just before prices started to go crazy, and I couldn't drive it prior to purchase, so it was a little bit of a gamble, but it's definitely payed off. Have fun and stay safe in yours, and maybe we can go for a WRX cruise at some point. Cheers man and thanks for the support :D
Too much fun ay? I haven't had the chance to drive it much recently, but can't wait to get back out there as soon as I can. Cheers for watching and for commenting :D
Hi Ali Toroganan, cool car haha. I did gearbox oil the other day, and I'm pretty sure it was a 21mm or 22mm. Definitely doesn't need a 'special tool' or anything, just the correct socket and a bit of muscle. Good luck with it man and thanks for watching :D
That's a very good buy at that money they don't usually go that cheap any issues you had to rectify? I challenge anybody to find a more complete package /fun practical classic car for the money some of these go for. Great bang for buck . Time will tell but they are starting to climb especially the 2 doors.
Hey aaron wilkie, oh man the two-door GM8s are already getting pretty high in value, but the four-door GC8s will follow too. My guy's a bit rough, but overall, not major issues - engine and gearbox okay, suspension was pretty buggered, and the paint needs some TLC... But for $1500 (Aussie), I ain't complaining - huge fun and a total smile machine. Cheers for watching man and I hope you liked the video :D
@@DaveZalstein nice video .keep up the good work .maybe some Aussie muscle New and old in the future perhaps. I've owned my 95 gc8 for 7 years now great car.

Hey Joel Pritchard, great question and thanks for reaching out. Short answer is yes. I'm bang on six-foot, but my best mate is a long-time Subey, WRX, and STI owner and he's easy 6'4" too. Yes, you might find your knees are up a little, but generally I'd say it shouldn't be a drama. Hope that helps mate and take care.

Ah, lol! Hey Andrew, the $7.00US thing is a joke mate - relax, I know the Aussie dollar isn't that bad (yet). As for the colour, the info I had was that 52D was Dark Blue Pearl, but I know that Dark Blue Mica 2 - which came before it - also shares the 52D colour code. So, apologies if I'm off on the era and it's a Mica not Pearl. But hey, at least we can agree it's still Dark Blue... Cheers for watching man :D
@@Spacemonkeymojo Haha, nah, no mate's rates. It was just before prices started to go nuts and it didn't run due to a damaged ignition, so was a bit of a gamble. Happy I went with it though - mega fun car.

@@DaveZalstein I've owned it for a while now - it was a ground up resto. I've owned about 8 gc8s/gf8s now lol. That's all variants - 4 sedans, 2 hatch/ wagons and 2 coupes/ 2 door type r's. To say the least, they're great cars - but showing their age - I've become a gc8/gf8 wreckers (my garage looks like one), just to ensure I can keep this wrx going. The regular WRX has never and will never be an icon. The only reason the WRX name is brought up is due to the STI. Nothing iconic about open diffs, 50/50 awd, or fragile transmissions. The regular WRX has always been a poser car for kids to feel good about themselves and throw on the STI wing. I’ve been a subaru fan for a long time and I’ve owned 4 STI and 2 wrx. You can spent 15k sti swapping a wrx all you want- still not the same as a genuine STI due to the sti chassis being altered and stiffened in several key places over the wrx. From behind the wheel if you know what to look for you can absolutely feel a difference between the genuine article and a fake STI swapped wrx. Not only is the regular wrx not an icon, not only is it a waste of money compared to any other alternate vehicle choice, but the regular wrx with it’s weak internals and garbage awd/trans is mostly responsible for subaru getting an undeserved reputation for being unreliable. If anybody is considering buying a baby wrx do yourself a favor and get a 5.0 mustang or a SI or a GTi if you can’t afford the genuine sti. Feel free to try and argue with somebody who knows the difference, I won’t reply to anybody you can have the last word. I just wanted to hopefully stop somebody from making a poor vehicle choice 😂

I was searching for a while and it came down to two, this guy and a more expensive one in a colour I didn't really love and in need of more mechanical work. Look, he's not perfect or mint by any stretch, but a total smile machine that doesn't owe me a lot.
Cheers for watching man and I'm stoked to hear you enjoyed the video so much. Hopefully you'll check out more.
All the best mate :D
@8:22 the little cubby, which you probably know by now is actually a fuse box cover, pinch the sides and it drops out lol
Spot on, and indeed it is - the old double-use :D
@@DaveZalstein although it says fuses unless you’re in the know lol. Have you still got the WRX , how about a update on it. Yeah I love that bum too one of the best rears I’m into lol 😆
@@EVOETR1 Haha, yeah mate, still got the little guy and not planning on getting rid of it. Still a few things to fix and tidy up but it's getting there slowly. As for an update, to be honest, filming has been super challenging with COVID and lockdowns and normal work. Maybe once he's looking better perhaps. Cheers for the support and drive safe :D
Just picked one up 2000 2.5rs little bit of rust on back corner panel but no problem prob gonna sand it down and repaint it. Scooped it up for $3k USD
Yeah yeah Jace, sounds like it's got potential. Just finding one these days is getting tough, so good luck with the project and drive safe :D
Oh thanks man, really appreciate the positive feedback - always nice to hear. As for finding a GC in the US... that could be difficult, no?
@@DaveZalstein gcs in the states were always non turbo 2.5rs's. If you want anything cool gc8 here you have to either build your own or wait the 25 year import rule but then also have right hand drive and deal with headaches with dmv because the vin isnt long enough on japanese cars to meet usdm standards. Also imports in america can be kinda dodgy even if they do meet the 25 year rule.
@@Oblio1942 Yeah, tricky no doubt. Good luck with it all man.
Great review of a super super car
Thanks so much - really appreciate the positive feedback.
Hey Dave, great video. I am also in VIC. Out of interest where did you take it for interior retrim? Cheers
Lovely car mate. I just picked up a gc8 wrx wagon. What brand and style of exhaust are you running? Sounds great
Cheers @MrMechanic45, not sure where you're located but this was a custom exhaust made up by the legends at Dandy Exhaust here in Melbourne.

very cool. i own a gc8 myself (sti type r v4) and i felt exacly what you mean when it comes down to the steering :D its really not great when you drive it on a highway for example pretty much dead around the center with a spongy feel to it even tho i have ofcourse an sti rack. i also own a fiesta st 150 and it has a briliant steering compared to my subi. my goal is to get the steering feel of the subi on the levelbut other then that and the rather harsh ride its such an awesome car i abosolutley love it. prices get kinda redicolous tho especially for a coupe like mine
Oh definitely man, don't sell a Type R Coupe now, no way! The thing is already worth plenty and will keep rising in value. Have fun in it, drive safe, and thanks for the support :D

$1500 for a wrx in Australia.. that’s an incredible deal. You’ll typically struggle to get an RX for that price

I guess, maybe the OZ, NZ, UK, Malaysian, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand & Indonesian officially imported Impreza (all the RHD drive units that are not JDM) have been optimised and factory tuned to run minimum on RON95 even though it's stated on the fuel filler cap to run minimum on RON98 🤭
Anyway, once again, thank you kindly for your valuable feedback 💪
Happy New Year 2024 and Cheers! 🥂

how did you pick this up for $1500? these are currently selling over $10k-$15k? I bought mine 10 years ago and im just the second owner, its pretty much identical spec to yours except with the wrc blue paint in just as bad condition lol.
Haha, yeah the paint's not great but fortunately that doesn't make it any less fun to drive. I got this guy three years ago just before prices started to go crazy, and I couldn't drive it prior to purchase, so it was a little bit of a gamble, but it's definitely payed off. Have fun and stay safe in yours, and maybe we can go for a WRX cruise at some point.

I did gearbox oil the other day, and I'm pretty sure it was a 21mm or 22mm. Definitely doesn't need a 'special tool' or anything, just the correct socket and a bit of muscle.

215 hp? Not 276 hp?

Clearly a big Subaru fan...🙄
