I would assume that continuing the main story is about the most complex thing I could possibly imagine so it's not as simple as turning the crank to churn out product. It's gotten to the point where it's nearly infinite in it's complexity. Also it seems that GRRM had no idea what the ending of the story was going to be when he started this game.
The novellas are the polar opposite. They're easy, breezey, and finish-able
Finishing is hard. Plus it's more fun to do new things.

Tolkien finished his work. Nice cope. 😆 The Silmarillion was in addition. George RR Martin didn't finish anything. He went on writing derivative works before finishing the story. If nobody will read it because it's not finished, anything derivative is pointless.
@@bobfg3130 Tolkien started writing The Silmarillion before he even wrote The Hobbit, for him The Silmarillion was the real story, he only wrote lotr because his publisher wanted a sequel to The Hobbit, and when he was writing lotr he decided to retroactively put it in the same world as Silmarillion, The Hobbit was originally stand alone.
@@canjie8818 the Hobbit wasn't always a stand alone, a lot of it was already inspired by the legendarium and the Silmarillion. It became impossible to separate them once he wrote LOTR, but a lot of Tolkien's writing became part of Middle Earth or took elements from it without him even noticing

It almost seems like he’s getting some weird power trip off this. The only way winds gets finished is reporters start looking at him and saying “that’s nice” and moving on every time he wants to give an update about what he’s working on.

@ I do man, but it's hard to appreciate a book franchise when a part of you knows it will never be completed. I've read around 5k pages of GOT and it's just sad knowing that the only ending I'll probably get is the one from the show

He should just wrap it up and split it into Winds of Winter and Dream of Spring and release them at the same time or like 1 year apart.
The problem with GRRM is he doesn't write with an outline. He doesn't sketch out the story before writing. His technique is literally to make it up as he goes along. This makes it nearly impossible to finish because all the threads of the story are so complex. With no overall vision or end-point to focus on how could he possible finish? Winds and Spring are not happening. For sure. Why? Because he doesn't WANT to. It's too hard, it's not his strength, and he hates writing it.
It's also easier to write something when you've got a fire in your belly and you're striving for success.
He's got everything he's ever wanted in his older age now and doesn't see why he should be spending that time working on something that is hard.
This is by far his biggest issue his story has gotten large, and bloated he has problems tying in plot lines .
I think what George ought to do with regards to Winds of Winter, is find someone who's an accomplished fantasy writer, and has a proven track record of being able to tackle complex stories, and being able to finish books and deliver on schedule. This person could help George get out of the mess he's got himself into. They could untangle the story lines, discuss potential directions for the story, maybe even write some outlines. They could also help with the writing process, intervening when George gets stuck. Or when he starts procrastinating.
George has great respect for Tad Williams, an author who has sold 30 million copies of his own books. It should be Williams.
@@TheRetroGuy2000or maybe giving them the outline, plot points, etc and letting them finish it. The problems he has with the series seems to be he is bored with it or it now feels like too much work and no fun. He isn't enjoying writing it.

Martin is an amazing tactician. Talk about managing expectations,😅 people have almost universally gave up on any chance of him finishing the series. All they want now is the penultimate book that he started to write decades ago 😂
What would bring him a lot of goodwill would be to do a Q and A with fans where he truthfully answers questions about books 6 and 7. Fans questions on the mysteries laid out. He’ll he could do a stadium tour where everyone gets 1-3 questions lol

It will get released in one form or another. A dream of spring will not.
It might get finished if something along the lines of what happened with Sanderson and Wheel of Time. But Martin is never finishing TWOW(he could probably, but that would take until 2030-2035, by which time he might very well be dead).

ASOIAF is his number one priority...except for World Con, a half dozen other novellas he's written since then, random TV shows, doing his months of vacation, football games, seeing movies in the cinema he bought, doing interviews. But besides all that, writing that one book is his number...twenty seventh priority.
Meanwhile, in less than the time since his last book, other authors have written 6 book epics.

Of all the stuff he does, not finishing his series will be his legacy...a cool story left unfinished by a writer who simply didn't care enough about the fans that made him rich or was disciplined enough to finish his legacy

Believe me I want him to finish as much as you do, but he created a world you’re so obsessed with that you think he owes you something. Regardless of whether or not he finishes the books, his legacy will remain that of one of the greats in fantasy.

Winds is on the back burner like its always been. So many people forget hes more into writing for television than he is writing novels for the sake of writing novels. He wouldn't of worked on twilight zone or beauty and the beast if writing novels was his focus. Hes stated its more fun for him doing television and game of thrones series is over so Winds doesnt much matter anymore to him and it shouldn't to any of us either.

I worry about GRRM because he seems to have writer's block regarding TWOW. However, I would dearly love to find out that the final GoT books are MUCH different than the TV series. The series just dropped any resolutions to the big mysteries in the books. For example, in the show, the Dothraki just rode off into the White Walker filled woods never to be seen again! And that's only a minor example. But I guess by now, GRRM must be aware of how addictive ASOIAF is. So I'm pulling for him to finish the story!

Any time he says anything anymore, it just further proves he is a narcissist and cares nothing about the fans of his books. If he did, he'd finish them. At this point, I don't even want to hear about him going on a vacation. He is 13 years behind on the book he is supposed to be working on. If I was 13 years late on completing a job, I'd be blacklisted from ever working in my industry again. It's time to put up or shut up. If the update isn't that Winds of Winter is finished and being released, we don't need to hear from him anymore. He's getting off on being a center of attention, even though he's not actually doing anything relevant anymore.

GRRM, King of the Unfinished Series. George says he can't write under pressure, so it seems hard to imagine he will start cranking out novels on demand to meet HBO's production schedule.
TBH I am starting to think that our only chance will be when his estate will allow someone else to finish TWOW. I've been reading his story since 1997 and I don't think he knows how to finish it.

Plan to finish your series or don’t bother writing at all is my takeaway as a reader. Because of GRRM, I refuse to read a series that isn’t complete.

It’s interesting that he mentions the village hero as his next project, not the she-wolves of winterfell which we all thought was the next story.
Honestly at this point, I’d rather he just work on blood & fire and dunk & egg. They’re both great and he could get a decent amount of that done in a reasonable amount of time.

so hes been watching a bunch of movies and tv and reading instead of writing. He probably has no benchmarks or goal posts

The story of Dunc and Egg doesn't end until the Tragedy of Summerhall. GRRM needs to swallow his pride and let others write more Dunc and Egg stories.
He'll have to, if he can't keep up with HBO's schedule (which he wont). But, on the bright side, the Hedge Knight novellas are self contained stories, so HBO could do whole seasons without him and it wouldn't ruin any overarching plot lines.

All he really has to do at this point is to change the title of the series to A Neverending Song of Ice and Fire.
Its HBO who should have learned their lesson. After the backlash on GOT's last season, working from an unfinished book should scare them! Of course, HBO may have contracted for just the 3 stories. Sure hope so.
Good point about Dunk and Egg not being finished and running into the same issue. It definitely seems George is running around getting TWOW. I don't understand how George doesn't realize that TWOW is the biggest book that he can put out but then again maybe he does. I guess making GOT was the biggest gift and a curse for George and his fans.

Having grown up as a "Get it done guy"; it's really tough seeing someone drop the ball and kick it away so easily and then have the nerve to get angry with people who have made him a multi-millionaire. I couldn't do it.

Way back I went to his book signing of A Storm of Swords, Maybe 50 people tops. He described his office and how a chaotic mess it was with notes and piles of ideas written on paper. I knew then he would never finish the Song of Fire and Ice.
I did get three autographs and I'm happy about that.
I feel like he's purposely not finishing the books. Why? Because he simply doesn't want to. He's filthy rich, elderly and perhaps the fire has left him. I could be totally wrong, it's just a hunch.

It wasn’t that they ‘ran out of source material’ for GOT, though. It’s that they stopped faithfully adapting what they had long before they ran out.
I dont mind George writing other material. In fact, I think it helps him get over his writing blocks with winds and stops him having these year-long breaks where he writes a handful of chapters, including rewrites

I mean- I get it… there’s more stories to his world than just the Song of Ice and Fire- while that is perceived as his most important story, it’s nice to see him excited about other time periods and events of Westeros. I’d be concerned/disappointed if he had lost interest in Westeros entirely and was expanding into other various worlds/not writing or working on adaptations at all. Westeros is still expanding, so I’m content; and if we never see the end to SOIAF then I’m sure all the fans will shove our heads together and craft dozens of endings, and maybe even one masterful one that we majority accept as canonical 🤷♂️ it is what it is
What will it take for this man to realize that no one cares about House of the Dragon, Elden Ring's lore and especially this. Jon Snow has been dead in the books since 2011 and still no signs of Winds of Winter? An author/artist should always be allowed to produce whatever they wish to produce, no one can force him to finish his books, but the same is true for the consumer and readers. I didn't watch House of the Dragon and I sure as hell am not going to watch this until A Dream of Spring is published and on the shelves.
Boycott anything he produces and maybe that will help him with his writer's block.
Why not split wow into 2 parts so he can release the first one already. It’s the least he can do since it’s taken so long and it’s obviously gonna be a very big book.
