@@garenburnerchannel3936 I saw the first three episodes of Firefly. It's not good. The acting is average and the world building is fundamentally scientifically illiterate. Deadwood had three seasons and ended because the show runner got a better job.
Back then Digg was twitter and there were relentless campaigns, which is ultimately why the movie came out. I never got in to Firefly but it was super clear to me that the fanbase (or marketeers...) were passionate about it, so I can only imagine the production costs were just too high to continue.

Resurrecting a cancelled network show and reviving it on a streaming service may be rare, but it’s not unheard of. The exact same thing happened with “The Expanse,” and for many of the same reasons. Both series were highly acclaimed and had passionate fans.
Another show that I love that had been resurrected like this was 'Young Justice'. It got a second life thanks to everyone and then got cancelled again with the DC restructuring 😅. But I love every second of what we got of it🥹. Hopefully one day, they could end that amazing story.
Lucifer is one of my favourite recent shows. So many great moments, great actors, and great writing. Can't wait to see future projects from Tom, he really was the highlight of it all.
Mazikeen protects the people she loves with her life, Tried to kill “GOD” himself because of how he treated Lucifer and this was before she had a Soul.
I didn't watch Lucifer originally. I saw him on Miranda & loved his character. So I thought what else was he in. I started watching Lucifer & I liked it. Neil Gaiman's name popped up & I was hooked, because I knew the storyline would be clever. It has ended up one of my favourite shows.
I came to Miranda later, I mentioned lucifer and Tom, and my mom told me about the show, love that show too... that set is where ab fab was filmed and they used some set pieces.. like the wardrobe, I love ab fab as well.... "white box" lol.
Met Tom in august of last year at steel city comic con. Made my day. Went to DragonCon 2 weeks later an met everyone else. He wrote on my picture how’s Atlanta losers. It was great
Even my aunt and uncle in their sixties in rural Norway loved Lucifer. It was kind of bizarre how wide of audience fell in love with that show. I dont think I have ever shared a love for a tv show with my aunt and uncle before as they usually dont like foreign tv shows at all.
Am I the only one who was immediately transported back to the days when Fox canceled Firefly? I swear that network has killed off more cult classics and beloved shows than any other.
That's probably because they have. Any time I see a list of shows that were canceled prematurely, Fox has like 2 shows for every one show by every other network. They're just less patient about it and less likely to allow a show to remain in it's time slot long enough to attract a following.
I know all the episodes pretty well by now. I like watching reaction videos of other's watching for the first time. It's fun to watch them get sucked in and turn into passionate fans in the course of a few episodes.
Tom Welling is a TERRIBLE actor. Wooden, stiff, no emoting. God I can't stand him as an actor. Watching him in Cons he seems fun and nice, but NOT a good actor at all. I was massively disappointed in Jensen, Danneel and Robbie for casting him in 'The Winchesters'.
I loved the show despite not really being my type of genre. This is an amazing actor that really knows how to make what would usually be a creepy annoying character and make him amazing! Any other actor would have come off as a cringe, yet he gives Lucifer that kind of almost innocent and playful demeanour that makes everything work so well.
The entire show was genius. One of the very few that are really fun to watch. You never know what was going to happen next. We have rerun it several times.
He put everything into that role and it shows. So i get the reaction when someone pulled the rug from under his feet while people loved that show to bits ... Studios are weird.
Lucifer is one of my all time favourite shows. Once of the reasons I love it so much is the personalities and performances given, I know its the nature of acting, but I always felt a sense of love and passion in the performances on Lucifer. When you see and hear stories like this from Tom, I am glad I can see it wasn't a false impression.
The most amazing show, group of characters and their dynamic and brilliant cast I've ever watched. Have watched the whole thing from start to finish about 5 or 6 times. Just the best.
I've noticed networks and streaming are doing this as soon as actors are becoming well known and then they have to be paid more etc and this is why they are cancelling these shows. Instead of keeping them going for so long.
💯 They don’t want the Friends phenomenon where the script is dependent on the characters being there. When they have to kill off a character the show shift. There are rare exceptions where it’s for the better. For Lucifer even when they killed Dan, he was still in the show. That last scene with Trixie in the park is 😢
I really, really loved the show. All of the actors were absolutely amazing in it, and Tom Ellis as Lucifer is right up there with some of ( in my opinion ) one of the better screen characters of our generation. I've got nothing but love for Tom, and all the others that made Lucifer possible.
Some actors are the SHOW! AND without him Lucifer don't exist!! What an Actor!!❤ One of my favorite show! I was watching it before Netflix.. I tried make people watch it when it got to Netflix! And everyone loves it of course!
I remember joining twitter just to help #SaveLucifer….. great show and Tom was awesome…Favorite scene… When he protects, Chloe with his glorious beautiful white wings, from Cains gunfire. It truly hurt him… I think I cried when he did that….
That scene is magical film photography and beautifully handled. One of my top favourite scenes of all time on Lucifer. 💜 We really kicked arse on Twitter. 😂
I live in Australia, so you guys always did a lot of the stuff during my late night/early morning, I remember being in my first semester of uni, and being up at all hours, on the bus etc. I had twitter before, but never really used it, and it got a workout to join the fight and save the show.
Shows get an early cancel because pay bonuses typically come into play at season three. That's why so many get a "tweak" at that point. It's all about keeping the payroll down.
Thank you for Lucy. He is 1 of my fav DC characters. The way you portrayed him was amazing. That's exactly how I could see lucifer living esp in Cali. If not there than Las Vegas.
Tom did a great job playing lucifer. He really embodied the develish side, whilst also displaying that misunderstood side of lucifer that many theologist ponder about. The show it self was no more than a 4/10 for me. Other than likeable castings, the story and writting were subpar. What saved that show and made it enjoyable for me was the cast. Every casting was on point for the main cast, and the few missteps weren't even that bad. I watched start to finish for the characters alone. The writting really took a nosedive after Netflix took over. Overall though, the passion from the community and the cast really makes you want to give this show more roses.
What I personally liked about the portrayal more than anything is that he was a likeable and sympathetic character somehow despite being a complete narcissist and psychopath in some ways and definitely a character that could believably have been the literal lord of Hell.
Honestly in my opinion 2 of my favorite comic portrayals the writers of the show were brilliant same with the acting. Smallville’s Lex brought this desire for a redeemable Lex Luther and did it so well because it gives you the feeling that he wasn’t given the opportunity of faith but the show did a wonderful job of showing the undertones that we’re there all along of Lex truly just manipulates almost by nature not by lack of nurture. Then the inverse with Lucifer taking a character that is irredeemable by nature and on the forefront comedically giving nurture and letting him kind of work it out and coming to the wrong conclusions because he is so deeply rooted in the idea that he is irredeemably. I enjoyed these portrayals and it was enjoyable to hear you both talk. (Also I see Alan Ritchson in my recommended and that takes me back to the smallville days too and I love reacher so can’t wait to check that one out OG AQUAMAN!)
Yeah, something we humble fans needed when showrunners cancelled Lie to me. Well cudos to Tom and the team that made Lucifer done&gone properly. With the ending, with characteres beeing fully played and opened. That is the way it must always been done.
Lucifer was the literal apotheosis of the "detective plus consultant" subgenre. I know there are doubtless fans of the comics who are disappointed it went in a different direction, but for the thing that it is, it's a delight. I can imagine the pitch meeting. An executive asks, "Hasn't this genre been done? We've had sexy lady detectives paired with writers and psychologists and everything else." The pitch continue, "But this is the Devil." Nonplussed Executive: "Like, a really bad criminal?" Pitch, "No, the actual Devil and ruler of Hell." Executive: "I'm in."
I would have like a little more growth from Lucifer in the final two seasons. But that aside, I love the directions they were able to go with the freedom Netflix provided them and that they were able to complete the story.
I would’ve hated that , he’s the Devil hes been alive for thousands of years . He did change a lot but suggesting that he should’ve changed more doesn’t sit well with me i dont know
What are you talking about? he had tons of growth in the final two seasons, season 1 Lucifer never would have been able to do any of those things including sacrifice for his own daughter and Chloe.
Lesson for other creators.. never give up. Ask the public, because we can honestly tell you what we want. Shows are cancelled that should not be and other shows slog on that are a waste of time and money.
Great actor, great performance, great show. Thank you for this interview and Mr. Ellis's dedication ❤ From a little less but still christian Czech republic 😅
This was one of the first shows that we watched after installing streaming TV in our home. I think we have watched it 4 complete times and each time we say, "I don't remember this." Probably one of the best characters on one show that I have ever seen.
I love Tom. Sure, in the show he was devilish handsome and cool, but it is fun to see in real life he is still a handsome due, but also an Ordinary Joe, and I mean that in a very positive way. Tom, that guy is awesome.
I really want to see Tom and that British accent in another long series!!! I watch Lucifer over and over and can’t get enough of that fantastic dry sarcasm and perfect combination of characters! Love you Tom and hope to see another series with you in it again SOON!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
All I have to say is that Lucifer filled the void left by Supernatural ending. I loved both shows SSSSSOOOOOOO much! Thank you for the laughs Tom and ofc Lauren, Lesley, Kevin, David, Aimee, Rachael! The twist on Lucifer was actually quite unique and pic imho!
I would love to see Tom in a new medieval show where he's a king of sorts, I don't know why I just wanna see him in more stuff! Something more gritty and serious, all my favourite episodes from lucifer were the dramatic ones such as him going back to hell to help Cloe, the car scene where has on his way to hurt the sinner man. Love the show mate, hopefully you come to comic-con in Australia some time!
As much as I loved this show I can understand how it could have been cancelled after season three, which felt like it was just never going to end. The second and third series felt so long, viewership might have dipped and fox is t known for giving a show with bad numbers a chance are they? Which is why season 4 felt like such a breath of fresh air when I was binge watching the series last year.
I remember the social media campaign to save Lucifer, i was part of it, tens, hundreds of tweets in support, it was such a strong experience, I am so happy it worked out, it was so important for the people who watched it, i absolutely adore it still.
His family moved to England just after he was born, he was raised in Sheffield so has an English accent. I can't remember now, but I think his ancestry may be half Welsh/half-English too. There's a lot of mixed ancestry between the Welsh and English tbh, a lot of English people end up living in Wales and vice versa.
Accents can change from where you're born to where you live pretty quickly, my family are from a very northern English working class town (Oldham, near Manchester) 3 moved further south for years, one still lives down there, their Oldham accent is completely gone.
It's like the three stories, otherwise known as Clarkson, Hammond and may from top gear, Clarkson s from Yorkshire and Hammond's from Birmingham, those accents are Definitely not the ones they speak with.

I never got in to Firefly but it was super clear to me that the fanbase (or marketeers...) were passionate about it, so I can only imagine the production costs were just too high to continue.
id never heard of firefly when i discovered firefly it was already cancelled they didnt even market firefly properly. the handling of firefly was dreadful its 100% a failure of Fox and its producers. such a shame it was great
I was introduced to Tom Ellis' work through watching Miranda, what a wonderful versatile performer
Resurrecting a cancelled network show and reviving it on a streaming service may be rare, but it’s not unheard of. The exact same thing happened with “The Expanse,” and for many of the same reasons. Both series were highly acclaimed and had passionate fans.
True. Both are exceptionally good shows though. Most "more mediocre" projects don't get that pick-me-up ;)
The expanse crew pulled a heist on Benzos the revive that show!!
Another show that I love that had been resurrected like this was 'Young Justice'. It got a second life thanks to everyone and then got cancelled again with the DC restructuring 😅. But I love every second of what we got of it🥹. Hopefully one day, they could end that amazing story.
Happened to Community but unfortunately the streaming service was Yahoo Stream 💀
@@maugdw Whoa. Speaking about a death sentence ;)
Loved Lucifer. So glad Netflix picked it up and brought it back for a few more seasons.
Lucifer is one of my favourite recent shows. So many great moments, great actors, and great writing. Can't wait to see future projects from Tom, he really was the highlight of it all.
I remember the hashtag SAVELUCIFER and the petition I signed. It was cool to be part of the movement to save the show ♥
Him saying “I don’t fucking care”, in response to being asked if the studio was pissed was such a Lucifer thing to say
Taking a page out of the Deadpool playbook. Brilliant move.
i named my daughter mazikeen.. she's almost 6 .... it was our absolute favorite show next to supernatural
Mazikeen protects the people she loves with her life, Tried to kill “GOD” himself because of how he treated Lucifer and this was before she had a Soul.
My fur kids are Crowley and Mazikeen (and Bootsy is our oldest 🤷♀️)
You named your daughter after a demon? 🤨
@@raeraeella6426Why not? Sounds pretty cool.
Loved him in the British comedy tv show "Miranda". Also recently saw him in an old episode of "Poirot" playing a police detective.
Have you seen an American series, made a few years ago called Rush with him in. Absolutely brilliant, could not believe that got cancelled.
He also plays a character in Merlin. Great performances all around.
Gary!!! ❤️❤️
Loved that show! The entire cast was amazing! Lucifer's relationship with Chloe and Maze was worth every minute.
I'm 75 and I loved the show, I've watched it twice.
Am I the only one who was immediately transported back to the days when Fox canceled Firefly? I swear that network has killed off more cult classics and beloved shows than any other.
Fox have screwed so many shows and movie franchises. It's like they make decisions on a whim depending on whether a CEO woke up in a good mood.
That's probably because they have. Any time I see a list of shows that were canceled prematurely, Fox has like 2 shows for every one show by every other network. They're just less patient about it and less likely to allow a show to remain in it's time slot long enough to attract a following.
That show is bad.
You are not alone; fellow browncoat lucifan
I love Lucifer. One of my absolute favorites. Constantly rewatching all the time.
I know all the episodes pretty well by now. I like watching reaction videos of other's watching for the first time. It's fun to watch them get sucked in and turn into passionate fans in the course of a few episodes.
I LOVED Lucifer. And I loved the ending. It's so rare that a show has a perfect ending, but they totally nailed it.
Every episode and season full of excitement. No boring episodes.
Tom Ellis such a cool actor in Lucifer, he reminds me of a young Vincent Price.....great series, Tom Welling was great on the series too
Tim Ellis, Toms brother that played Michael
@@WereSquatch Tom played both. He doesn't have a brother named Tim.
@@huchlvr No way you thought that Tim Ellis comment was serious LMFAO
@@James-sw9vm I did. Sorry.
I love his naughtyness through it all
That is because he is British. If an American actor had played Lucifer it would have been overplayed in a cheesy and overblown way.
I didnt watch Lucifer until last year. Binged the whole thing. Loved the show and the songs!!! Thank you so much for persevering!!!!
The entire show was genius. One of the very few that are really fun to watch. You never know what was going to happen next. We have rerun it several times.
"Were they pissed?"
"I don't fucking care."
He instantly gained my undying respect. Lol
He put everything into that role and it shows. So i get the reaction when someone pulled the rug from under his feet while people loved that show to bits ... Studios are weird.
Man this show was such a tear jerker! Ugh I’ve never had to cut so many onions
3:03 The PERFECT response to that question!
I'm sure the heads at Fox were fuming over their decision to let the show go considering how successful it has been.
Fox is s... now
The most amazing show, group of characters and their dynamic and brilliant cast I've ever watched. Have watched the whole thing from start to finish about 5 or 6 times. Just the best.
I've noticed networks and streaming are doing this as soon as actors are becoming well known and then they have to be paid more etc and this is why they are cancelling these shows. Instead of keeping them going for so long.
💯
They don’t want the Friends phenomenon where the script is dependent on the characters being there.
So very true it is a terrific cast & each one of them is so very perfect in their part1! aLL SO VERY TALENTED!!
I always liked Lucifer, glad it was saved!
I’m so glad to have been part of #saveLucifer
Some actors are the SHOW!
AND without him Lucifer don't exist!!
What an Actor!!❤ One of my favorite show! I was watching it before Netflix..
I tried make people watch it when it got to Netflix! And everyone loves it of course!
Save Lucifer was the first Petition i´ve ever singed. God how i loved this Show. Tom Ellis was the best Lucifer i´ve seen until this day.
@@LarissaFay Yes we did… I never saw a more devoted fan base and community effort than that campaign…
I live in Australia, so you guys always did a lot of the stuff during my late night/early morning, I remember being in my first semester of uni, and being up at all hours, on the bus etc. I had twitter before, but never really used it, and it got a workout to join the fight and save the show.
Great stuff. But nothing can top the Father Frank stuff for me. The rage Lucifer has after he dies. He truly did care about that guy.
Shows get an early cancel because pay bonuses typically come into play at season three. That's why so many get a "tweak" at that point. It's all about keeping the payroll down.
The old Disney method
Lucifer was the best show ever!!!!
What I personally liked about the portrayal more than anything is that he was a likeable and sympathetic character somehow despite being a complete narcissist and psychopath in some ways and definitely a character that could believably have been the literal lord of Hell.
miss that show, rewatched it 5 times, now we need a trilogy of movies plz, with tom ofcuz.
from denmark
Also, it ended in a place that it shouldn't when Lucifer's face was revaled. It's a reason to murder to cancel a show at that point
I would’ve love for the show to keep on going! Tom Ellis better show up as Lucifer in every cameo possible.
It was a very brave thing for Netflix to do. When the fans demanded Community be saved we all remember what happened to Yahoo
One of the greatest shows and great characters ever
It was not a good show.
@@kb5509 I kinda liked it , but its not a good show in any way , kinda like as soon as I turn it off It never enters my mind again.
Damn that's a gutsy move. Defying a studio like that could of potentially been a career ender.
My dearly departed friend Dawn LOVED this show, Tom and Lucifer brought her a lot of joy.
Thank You Tom for Lucifer and I ❤Recently finished Miranda....Brilliant....Funny and Heart-felt....Adorable Roles Played by All Cast
I only didn’t like the musical thing on the sport field
I find it so funny that Tom Ellis has played both God and the Devil in different TV Shows
Lesson for other creators.. never give up.
Ask the public, because we can honestly tell you what we want. Shows are cancelled that should not be and other shows slog on that are a waste of time and money.
It boggles my mind the reasons that networks have for canceling shows that are doing well.
I'd have loved another season of "The fades" where i first saw Tom. That was an awsome show!
Great actor, great performance, great show. Thank you for this interview and Mr. Ellis's dedication ❤ From a little less but still christian Czech republic 😅
I loved Lucifer! Thank you for a great show.
This was one of the first shows that we watched after installing streaming TV in our home. I think we have watched it 4 complete times and each time we say, "I don't remember this." Probably one of the best characters on one show that I have ever seen.
I'm so happy that the show was saved ❤
I watched it by chance when looking for something to kill time over a weekend, loved the show from the start great acting and funny as well .
I love Tom. Sure, in the show he was devilish handsome and cool, but it is fun to see in real life he is still a handsome due, but also an Ordinary Joe, and I mean that in a very positive way. Tom, that guy is awesome.
Lucifer was an ok show but this guy was absolutely perfect for this role. Seriously, he elevated the whole thing from ok to good for me.
its gonna be cool if they make new version of Phantom of the opera , and tom to play the phantom . I just see him in that role !!!
I really want to see Tom and that British accent in another long series!!! I watch Lucifer over and over and can’t get enough of that fantastic dry sarcasm and perfect combination of characters! Love you Tom and hope to see another series with you in it again SOON!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The power of a fan base in a positive light. So strange that so many other TV shows choose to demonise and attack their own fans.
which is pretty stupid, after all we are the Final Boss. Without fans you don't have the show, but studios seem to ferget this tiny detail.
All I have to say is that Lucifer filled the void left by Supernatural ending. I loved both shows SSSSSOOOOOOO much! Thank you for the laughs Tom and ofc Lauren, Lesley, Kevin, David, Aimee, Rachael! The twist on Lucifer was actually quite unique and pic imho!
he said he was not directly responsible for saving the show... we all want a what if episode if tom didnt send the tweet and went on his normal day
I would love to see Tom in a new medieval show where he's a king of sorts, I don't know why I just wanna see him in more stuff! Something more gritty and serious, all my favourite episodes from lucifer were the dramatic ones such as him going back to hell to help Cloe, the car scene where has on his way to hurt the sinner man. Love the show mate, hopefully you come to comic-con in Australia some time!
Thank you Sir for sending that tweet!
Nicely played Tom👍
One of the very absolute best series of these last 25 years, period. Saving it was a very Lucifer's move... thank sooooo much Tom!!!!!
Look at what #SixSeasonsAndAMovie did for Community, TWICE, the fans and cast did this it does have a big effect, a simple tweet.
This show comforted me in a very lonely time In my life❤ I still hope it could return
Netflix both saved and ruined the show
Did you not like the other seasons i admit they weren’t too strong, but I do think there was a good show to it
I agree, I still enjoyed the show
My biggest gripe was the last season and the ending, felt like they could’ve done better
@@brianbrooks5366The last season was phenomenal.
@@PhyloGenesis I will say that most of my issues with season 5 are regarding the added storyline with his daughter
Tom was on Doctor Who and was called DW on Lucifer. Love Tom.
His accent is mad, I thought he was from Cardiff
His family moved to England just after he was born, he was raised in Sheffield so has an English accent. I can't remember now, but I think his ancestry may be half Welsh/half-English too. There's a lot of mixed ancestry between the Welsh and English tbh, a lot of English people end up living in Wales and vice versa.
Accents can change from where you're born to where you live pretty quickly, my family are from a very northern English working class town (Oldham, near Manchester) 3 moved further south for years, one still lives down there, their Oldham accent is completely gone.
It's like the three stories, otherwise known as Clarkson, Hammond and may from top gear, Clarkson s from Yorkshire and Hammond's from
Birmingham, those accents are Definitely not the ones they speak with.
