- On 31st of October 1990 50 years old Pelé celebrated his birthday by playing against the greatest stars of his time - the opposition included Marco van Basten, Hristo Stoichkov, Enzo Francescoli, Gheorghe Hagi, Oscar Ruggeri, Rene Higuita and many more. Originally Diego Maradona himself was supposed to captain the World Stars XI, but unfortunately he had to miss the game due to an injury.
O Rei was in an incredible physical form for his age and produced a decent performance against world's best players at their career peak. By the way, check out young Cafu on the right - the 20 years old was lucky enough to get the chance to play alongside one of his childhood idols.
Harms this brought tears to my eyes. Just incredible to see O'Rei in a modern football setting. He looks incredible fit & athletic here, for someone 50 at the time. You can see all of his legendary spatial awareness, velvet touch & control of the ball, that only Maradona gets near.
The most complete player in football history. Dribbling, passing, ambidextrous of feet, shooting, heading, prolific striker goalscoring, free kicks, free style skill's, defensive tackling, midfield playmaking, team player. You name it. He did it *ALL!*
I was in such an awe of this performance - of course you could see that he wasn't able to match his opponents pace if they were both chasing the ball at full speed, but otherwise you'd never guess that he was at least 20 years older than anyone else on the pitch.
Maradona was supposed to feature as the World Stars captain up until the day before the game, it's such a shame that it didn't happen, it would've been epic.
@@HarmsFootball That's interesting, that Maradona was supposed to have been captain of the opposition. That would have been fantastic seeing, O'Rei & Pibe de Oro playing in the same match. The two most globally celebrated & feted iconic football players of the 20th century.

He didn't do anything really in these clips. Not much of a performance to be honest. Granted, he is in good shape for a 50 year-old but there are no signs of the kind of magic you saw from Maradona even when he was overweight and out of shape.

He had no weaknesses. If you took what he did 50 years ago and used evolution today he would dominant. He did everything before anyone without seeing anyone before him. He is the reason everyone wears number 10. He is the father and grandfather of all players after him. Football was much different back then. You had to be living in those times to really understand what was going on. He was a God. The things he did no one had done at that time. All of the players today benefited off of someone they saw before. Pele was creating from origin.

this is incredible. when I was 43, I tried to play some football in a half size of this field with some friends for fun, in 20 minutes my legs were shut, and I was in bed for 3 days couldn't walk or climb stairs just in agonizing pain. this may seem easy to you, but it requires incredible power, flexibility and stamina. he was amazing athlete. RIP king.
It depends on how active you are. I'm 43 now and could easily play footy for as long as i liked.
But if you get off the couch after having done no exercise in years, you will suffer for days afterwards.

Aquí y con 50 años se aprecia su inmensa capacidad competitiva, se ve que se tomó el juego muy en serio y lo quería ganar y hacer un gol a toda costa, aunque no fue muy entendido por sus compañeros. Pelé, una bestia de la competición y un genio jugando al fútbol. El más grande de todos los tiempos, nadie siquiera se le acerca, ni lo hará jamás.

@@danielbernd Using official goals according to FIFA. 1000+ includes friendlies that weren't official matches. (I.e. - Any team Santos played when they toured the world, Military teams, known teams like Milan but just friendly matches, etc.)
I don't totally write these off in terms of significance as it is good to see Pele play English teams and dominate but they are a mix of games that we can't vouch for statistically.
