In Pelé's times to score a goal or press the defence was harder. The rules were different. It was not illegal to pass the ball to the hands of the goalkeeper, there were no changes in the game, the technical foul didnt result in a red card, to have a penalty was a miracle and one third of the modern goals were offside before 1990
And because there were no changes in the game, the captain of the better team, France in 1958, was deliberately fouled by a Brazilian player and had to abandon the game. France had to play the full second half of the semifinal with 10 men. Else, Brazil would have never "won" it fairly.
Look for a film with Pele in training to see how easily he runs and jumps. Anyway, although smaller, he jumped much higher than all the others, in terms of distance from the ground. IMO Pele was faster and more agile.
Comparisons are dumb! They played in different times and athletic body fitness, advances in all players, different playing techniques differ. It's harder to play creatively today than in Pele's time. Pitches are different, much better today. Balls are different. They're lighter today, waterproof. Pele played with real leather that got heavy when soaked with water! Both have been excellent!!!
Its not harder to play creativitly. Its just not needed. Today is everything focused on pace because of the weaker resistance. Pele stardom internationally is unmatched and yes he was ahead of his time. However, I can recall a feature on Pele via the tv in 1970 preparing for his final world cup. I was 6+ at the time in Jamaica and viewed with a few friends of my mine, Pele physical fitness was at his best with an excellent blood pressure reading and I won't forget him being timed in a 100 meters sprint at 10.9 secs. I've tried many times locating that film with the advent of the internet and UA-cam unsuccessfully. But as kids back then we all wanted to be like him, his name was a regular graffiti back then.
No one can be compared to Pelé. In these lists of the greatest players, Pelé shouldn’t even be mentioned, because he’s on an unreachable level! He did everything that today’s players do, 70 years ago-he won 3 World Cups and scored in all of them. The proof that Pelé is the eternal king is that there is always someone to compare him to.
These comparisons seem unfair to me. The times are different; decades separate Pelé and Ronaldinho, during which the playing fields changed, the ball is not the same, and training and physical fitness have evolved. Comparing two geniuses like them, who are separated by such distinct eras, doesn’t make sense. Both were enormous players (personally, I only saw Ronaldinho play; I’ve only seen Pelé in black and white videos). I’m not Brazilian; I’m Argentine, but my respect and admiration for these two players are immense, as well as for Brazilian football. Even though it’s not currently in a good moment, it’s like a sleeping lion
It is too superficial. It depends on how you compare the two. I am sure that Ronaldinho dribbles by far better. The thing is that football players improved a lot since the time Pele played football. So, despite Pele may look more impressive against the opponents he played, I am sure he would have been pretty average nowadays. The same thing concerning scoring the goals. The average number of goals scored each game decreased significantly since the time of Pele. Probably, even twice. So, it makes zero sense to expect that Ronaldinho scores the same number of goals each game as Pele did. My opinion is that Ronaldinho is significantly better in all characteristics if these are taken literally. However, Pele's dominance was more significant due to lower level of players at those times.
Spoken with the certainty of someone who knows nothing. Pele was better in every aspect, there is a reason he was named by the Olympic committee the athlete of the century, compared to athletes in every single sport. At some point Pele’s club was barely playing championships because they were requested everywhere in the world to play friendly games for people wanted to see Pele playing. Pele was otherworldly, quite simple.
@@LeonardoPostacchini 1. I have little trust in Olympic committee, especially, recently. 2. Do you know what were the criteria based on which they named Pele the best athlete of the century? I think these include dominance in his era, social impact etc. It is not an absolute comparison of professional skills. 3. You do not have to know much about football to see that now it is very different from what it was 50 years ago. Now the number of goals is by far lower, speeds are higher, players are by far more physical, there is more accent on team play. Even over the last 20 years the number of dribbles made, say, by Ronaldo or Messi per game got lower and lower every year. This is what is being imposed on them by coaches.
@@dmitry5319 He was blazing fast with the ball, his speed alone rivals nowadays fastest players and that was running on a much worse field, with worse shoes and a much heavier ball, with no nutritional and physical conditioning support. He had a massive vertical jump reaching with his head higher than goalies with their hands(his vertical jump was as high as Michael Jordan’s), he was agile and he could use equally both his legs to score, dribble and pass, he could play every single position, including as a goalkeeper which he actually did in a number of games having never conceded a single goal. Regarding the number of goals, Pele played every position in the field in official matches, including goalkeeper, his most common position was midfielder as much as he scored goals he also facilitated goals for his teammates. There was a Santos match were he scored a hat trick and then went to play as a goalkeeper for the remainder of the match. Whatever excuses you find for modern players Pele also had to contend with coaches trying to dictate a certain style of football, in fact during one of the World Cups the players rebelled against the coach and told him to “let Pele do his thing”. He also had to contend with being brutalized by the defence in a era when you could commit murder and go Scott free. Tarcisio Burgnich of Italy, who marked Pelé during the 1970 final, was quoted saying "I told myself before the game, he's made of skin and bones just like everyone else - but I was wrong".

Dud...In Pelé's times the fields were horrible, the ball was heavy, the equipment was shitty and there were no Red cards (meaning that the defenders could do whatever they want without consequenses, so it was way more violent back then).
There’s 4 people that could step out of a car in any city, and be swarmed by people, Babe Ruth, Ali, Jordan and Pele. All but Jordan were only seen on Saturday’s or in print. Pele wasn’t just great, he was universally loved by all.
For me PELE was/is until present the greatest Football player of all times simply because there is/was no player who can or could do things that PELE did not do 50 years ago! BUT if I could choose a player who came close to be like him with football skills and also joy of playing the game, I would say it was RONALDINHO.
You can't state that Pelé was a Striker. Actually he rarely played in that position (he came from behind and scored). Many people say that because of the insane amount of goals he scored...but he usually played as game Maker/Midfield (that's why every number 10 are midfielders, it all started with Pelé). But the thing is that you can put Pelé in every offensive position and he would perform in that position at the same level as the greatests legends of that position. Pelé even could play as goalkeeper (he played 4 games and never took a goal)...that's what makes him the most complete player of all time.

Outrunning restricted defender, abusing gap passing and blind spots r the Main tactics nowadays. Attacker got favoured in the 90s, during 00s up until today unlike in peles era where there werent even cards and defender could do as they please
Guys, Pele ran 100 m in less then 11 seconds. Pele was a bull. He invented modern football. 12 world cup goals in 15 world cup games….being a midfielder. And, by the way, in Brazil the order is Pele, Zico, Ronaldo, Romario and then Ronaldinho.

PELE, ES EL REY DEL FUTBOL.....Y NO ES COMPARABLE!
Pelé it's The King! And Ronaldinho is The Witcher! And both are football legends!

It has a official record of Pele's speed. It is in the oldest documentary about him, "Isto é Pelé", in portuguese, produced in 1974. There, the physician of the brazilian team says that Pele had a speed of 11s in 100m.

Pelé won because FIFA gave him more points. Clever analysis....
