I've been playing Souls games on release since Demons Souls and I gotta say that, while Malenia is very memorable, she's one of the worst boss fights I think FS has ever designed. Healing on Hit and her blatantly ignoring the stagger rules of the game are just such terrible directions for the boss to go that it ruins an otherwise perfect Superboss. Waterfowl dance and her Phase 2 is fine it's just her breaking the game's rules that I think is inexcusable and I hope Fromsoft learns from it and keeps future Super Bosses on the same power level but more fair
I may have only been playing souls games since 2015 but I have platinumed them all and I have to disagree with you. Malenia was designed to be fromsoft hardest boss yet and they succeeded. It was designed well but it just requires high levels of skill. You can beat her with any build as long as you have the skill. I beat her with my pure strength build yesterday for my second character
@@berryamv2296 I disagree on "designed well", because I consider that "inconsistency with previously established mechanics" to be a "bad design". Having waterfowl or lifesteal is not a big deal, but Malenia's inconsistency with poise, hyperarmor, stance and etc. is the problem. In other words, Malenia itself is not completely a bad design, only the inconsistent parts. So I believe that Malenia being 'defeatable in every build' despite the inconsistencies should never be an excuse for allowing bad design.

Peer pressured into putting dragons, Malenia, and Elden Beast into anything but D. lol
Dragons are C-B, Elden Beast is B, Malenia is A IMO.
I see Malenia has left a mark on grubby a lot more enemies seem to have lifesteal :D
Grubby isnt who he was before the game. First he was a warrior, ready to get his hands on the challenge, now he is a mage, somewhere in the distance, behind a tree 😂
If you want more souls goodness, Dark Souls 3 is the closest to Elden Ring but Dark Souls remastered is the way to go.
Next magic playthrough and then faith playthrough
Grubby listening to the god of Madness, who's inhabiting Yura's body and telling him that he shouldn't sacrifice his maiden: *Sure, I'd never sacrifice my maiden*
Skip 50 hours in and hear this: 28:16
He definitely has to try with magic summons and mimic tear tbh
I think on a first olaythrough you should use everything you can snd on secondsry playthroughs theb make it challenging , you end up better at the game instead of taking thousands of tries idk how to explain it
I'm 7 play-throughs in and have never summoned or used magic. I'm certain I've enjoyed myself much more this way.
thx grubby
Surprised grubby liked Godskin Duo, everyone hates the duo. To be fair he did do mount gelmir very late, that might be the reason
I hated godskin duo and valiant gargoyles (grubby didn't find this area)
You fight the duo in faram azula tho?
Next soulslike when?
Amen!
Let people enjoy summons! It IS easy mode and you owe it to yourself to try bosses without summons. But if you really can't take it, then summon away.
I would say NPC summons built into the area are actually important content and skipping them is depriving yourself of the intended experience. So Rogier is absolutely legit.
Spirit bell summons are for new players or players who really need an easy mode because they don't understand what git gud really means.
"I would say NPC summons built into the area are actually important content and skipping them is depriving yourself of the intended experience"
THE intended experience? Idk about that.
@@anonymousperson8903 Its not the intended, that's bullshit. It's a fucking game, you play it as you wish as long as you have fun. You're a hardcore gamer? play it the hardest way possible then. You're a casual gamer that plays to relax on a dark fantasy setting game? Just play whatever you want as long as you have fun, lol.
@@DiegoTorres-kv7js Agreed!
@@anonymousperson8903 Yea man, sometimes they do special abilities that gives a clue to their story.
Like Melina when you can summon her for Godfrey.
I view getting as much of the story of a game as possible as THE intended experience. I would like to hear the argument otherwise.
@@toknowwhyuneed3593 What about those who are more interested in fun combat encounters than the story? Are we not playing as intended if we choose not to summon because we actually want to engage completely with the encounter?
You don't have to be sad the journey is almost over. Just play the game again, with a different build. All the Souls games are designed with replay value and trying different builds as a core pillar.
🤓
And thus he started to look for more hack and slash games :3
this is not hack n slash though
@@robboss6685 I know :3
And after hack and slash he will play... idk.... Turn based rpg 🤔
Kinda sad that Margit being a filter boss is a Love it/hate it boss and there's nothing in between. I was the lucky ones that truely enjoyed His boss fight. essentially He is the tutorial boss/trainer in my elden ring playthrough He thought me how to dodge, patience and understanding attack patterns. compared to when I started dying on tree sentinel and cruicible boss fight endless amount of times. it was truely when I beat Margit that I feel like I understood how to play the game.
after learning the main mechanics of the game like learning attack patterns, dodging and attack timing through Margit and applying it to different bosses I basically steamrolled everything in the game (Not Malenia tho) and enjoyed playing elden ring and other souls like.
I'd even say instead of Shade/mirage of morgott He should be the legacy Boss of Stormveil castle.
I'll take 10 Malenias to one orphen of kos
elden beast as S tier is criminal 😂
To be fair radagon needs to be in S tier, and you can't really split them up
@@quinnmichaelson6793 the amount of explosions, lingering AoEs, projectiles and other bs he can chain in a single combo seriously pisses me off at times. He's the only boss who made me lose my temper and hit my chair a few times babyRage
Malenia. I hate her so much. I beat her first with mimic. I then started a new game and beat her solo with level 120 with Nagakiba with bloodflame. So pretty much a rivers of blood. I am now doing a full fist weapon run only… I hate my life so much as soon as I have came to her. I’m at 50 attempts so far. Had to get off due to rage. I do refuse to give up. Because I want to do only fists. But the life steal does make me feel so bad man. I need to just get good. But still feeling pretty bad right now lol.
Very brave writing straight up VIRGINS on search on livestream hahahaah
Nice tier list imo, i agreed with most of them
Atleast grubby admits its a skill issue
Malenia should be SS tier
Stockholm Syndrome tier
Has the grubster played outer wilds before?
hello profesor Grubby
*gets popcorn*
58:10 "Pontificate" doesn't mean what you think it does. You used it as "ponder" but it more means "to preach at" like from a pontiff (which I think just means the pope). I swear I'm not grammar policing you, I made the same mistake. There's a funny (now) story about how my use of the same word with a girlfriend blew up in my face after she looked it up. And English is my native language 🤦♂️
Thank you, my bad! Was already feeling very leery about that word, I knew it was probably wrong >_
Oh god. Tierlist content beyond wc3. Thats where I draw the line
He's right by the way, Malenia does cheat. She's the only boss that doesn't follow the same stagger rules every single other enemy in the game does. You didn't imagine her crazy hyperarmors canceling into more hyperarmors, they were real. Kinda puts her in a cool but flawed boss fight category because it forces you to change your build to fight her in a very specific boring way. She's basically the Fume Knight of Elden Ring.
I feel like she has to cheat with hyperarmor. Otherwise she would be a joke, no? Sister Friede (DS3's version of a crazy dex girl) is much the same: staggerable, but will eventually escape with a hyperarmor move
@@HaronYoungerBro Yeah Malenia has the same escape move too and that makes sense. What doesn't make sense is Malenia having multiple Hyperarmor moves that she can cancel into at random. Thats why you sometimes get punished even when you do everything perfectly, theres a bit of luck involved with the boss fight.
@@Meitti wdym by "cancel into"?I only see her canceling moves when I'm a summon and lag is the culprit :)
Do you mean after a stagger?
@@HaronYoungerBro "Cancel" is a fighting game term, she switches from one attack animation to the next one in mid-animation. Aka she "cancels" the first move from the middle when she starts a second move.
@@Meitti ah, we are on the same page. She never did that against me in my 150 ish rounds. Would be ridiculous if she did. So I'm pretty sure that's not true.
She can decide not to swing on her right strafe opener if you're out of range - that's the only exception I can think of, but that comes with it's own recovery, so no immediate switch to new attack there
glasses!
Dark souls 3 is like elden ring but with much better bosses
With like 5 good bosses in total if you're generous and the worst level design of any FromSoft game to date :/
@@aaron4570 what do you find so bad about it's level design? I feel like it was consistently good. Can't recall a single area that I thought was bad, not nearly as the likes of Tomb of the Giants, The Gutter, Lake of Rot
ER bosses are better on the whole than base game DS3, and the DLC for ER is coming out soon too.
only 165 bosses i think 😂
Malenia sucks ! her life steal makes shields and summons unviable ! That alone , for me makes her the only unfair boss in all Fromsoft games imo , and I don't even play shields or summons , bt I think any build should be viable.
And I don"t even think she is harder than orphan o kos, ishin or even Frieda, but mayne that's just me, I just don't like her haha
@@pyrusmcdougz3730 for me Malenia took twice as many attempts as Isshin and Friede combined. And those two were some of the hardest for me too. But I think once you figure out and beat Malenia she can become quite easy. Once you can consistently dodge waterfowl you got her number
😲
Womp womp
Bruh Malenia is BS. Don't like her fight mechanics. Least enjoyable boss in the game for me. If i have to fight her i summon or cheese with bleed. She doesn't play fair so it seems almost meant to have you summon or abuse op stuff by design lol
How doesn't she play fair?
@@anonymousperson8903 Ridiculous hitboxes that linger longer than the animation shows, heal on any hit, even blocked it still heals her etc etc
@@Breaper292 "Ridiculous hitboxes that linger longer than the animation shows"?
What?
Idk man I beat her RL1 with a club and she seemed completely fair to me. Even before then it never felt like she was trying to get me to use OP shit.
I do agree the healing on shields is sussy though.
You can't make a tier list you beat every boss with summons
Why tho? It's just a game, you play it the way you like as long as you have fun and don't mess with anyone.
Is healing on hit necessarily a bad mechanic?
@@KodFrostwrath explain the problems with her? I’ve never had any trouble with poise or hyperarmour. She is designed to be a difficult boss. On a whole new level than the others and they succeeded with that
@@berryamv2296 Is just what I said, but you can check the video "Malenia doesn't play by the rules - Elden Ring boss analysis" for a more detailed breakdown. You can even check the follow up, linked in the pinned comment of it.
