The Tyler1 tournament reintroduced me to WC3 and I don't even watch that guy. Grubby's commentary sold me on the depth and complexity of this game I hadn't played since I was 13. Now I'm binging all the content!
I think I remember the Moon vs Grubby game. And the other game vs Moon, 2008 in Cologne, I watched it live. I WAS THERE. Moon and Grubby started on the opposite side of the grid, so a finals with there two would theoretically be possible. And then, they both went to the finals. Going to the venue, I saw Grubby and Cassandra, both smiling but slightly tense. I held my "Grubby FTW" sign high during the match, and the night before I added "2004 2008" hoping for another Grubby championship.
1:16:55 this was such an iconic moment. Was live in the crowd cheering for you :). Had never imagined you could really win this, always hoped, but moon was just that strong and night elf so much better than orc. You lost the first game and the second was on a knives edge, but hell you played so amazing. Khaldor screaming was the cherry on top, one of my favourite casters of all time. Seeing you at the end standing there with the durch flag around your shoulders and a pretty devastated moon. So long back in the past, how time flys by, I just recently started my study at this point in 2008 :).

For those who are curious, the teammate that grubby is talking about is ToD. During 2006, Grubby and ToD quite surprisingly met each other quite often in the grandfinals despite being a teammate which may be the reason why he didn't want to practice with grubby.
I've been waiting for the Orc tier list and was a bit dissapointed when I see this video. But 15 minutes in, man this is even BETTER than a units tier list.
1:51:22 My God Grubby! I love the way you express yourself! Hillarious! Love all of your content and I'm learning soo much that I had no idea about when it comes to Good 'Ol WC3!
I haven't played in 20 years but this still of great interest to the little cluster of neurons i have buried in my brain somewhere. I love these talks while I'm on the bike or treadmill.
damn it man.... I only have 60 min a day for watching videos of games i don't play anymore and now I gotta put 2 slots in for this? shiet. ok, I guess.
Since a healing fountain heals ALL the units around it it also scales with the number of units being healed which evens itself out. During a fight near a healing fountain however high hp units have an advantage because of focus fire.
I know it isnt a 1v1 map, but I loved back then to play "friends" as a 4v4. It had some issues with creep camps (because there are like no camps ;D), but still like the concept of having a mate directly nearby.
grubby do you know the cheesy red creep spot strat with human archmage at lvl 1 on Last Refuge? You rush hero + shop buy two critters. Bring your critters in position next to the goldmine to block the melee creeps, but let a gap for your hero. pull the creeps with 1-2 units away. get your hero in position behind the goldmine and start casting blizzard on the range units until they die. the critters block the melee units from reaching your hero. this strat is really risky but really fun to pull of.
I saw the title and thought "Twisted Meadows better be at the top", such a great map with so many dynamics and variety. Not surprised it's alone at the top, and interesting it's a 4-players map that has the #1 spot too
These tier lists are great Grubby. I love the trips down memory lane of the history of the game, the meta and your experiences you touch on in these videos. I would love a dedicated video on the evolution of the meta and innovations in the competive space from 2002 onwards. You're such an innovator yourself you could discuss how and why you approached certain challenges, but also your experience and reaction to early pioneers such as Insomnia, DayFly and MaDFroG. Like at the start of this video you said that UD would rather race swap to Orc mirror on Maelstrom in 2004 and my question is why? I know this was a trend even on Lost Temple that UD would raceswap to avoid Orc, but what specifically about the matchup/map were they trying to avoid?
Listening to Grubby is making me want to play WC3 again, I wasn't very good but so many good memories of it, and it would be cool to learn NE properly haha
That market place insight and creep camp item drop is some next level game knowledge. I'm not even playing the game anymore since 2014, but boy do I want to know more about it.
so much nostalgia about these maps. Thanks Grubby for great insights and tactics shared that affected balance of the maps. Absolute fun to watch and know it and to relive some of the moments i had on this map (though i never played wc3 professionally)
I love this format. I never would have thought about a map tier list. But here it is. Very entertaining! I wish I knew it years ago when I was trying to join local competitive tournaments...
I think it's interesting/a bit of a shame that we had so few classic competitive maps that used different tilesets. WC3 has such a wide range of tilesets but between creep balance and just the fact that outlands, barrens, snow, etc. aren't as easy on the eyes, my memories of WC3 will always just be green.
These tier lists have gotten me and my bro back into WC3. I think these tier lists have been some of the most effective advertising WC3 has seen in a long time
One issue Grubby didn’t mention about TurtleRock was a lightning shield drop from the second spot on the default creeproute. That single drop was instantly turning HvH mirror into a terrible mess. You just LS your footmen into your opponents base and their peasants are just dead, especially on closer respawns. And everyone was aware about it. It was addressed later in patches, but while it was with us TR was a Russian roulette for human.
such a detailed tier list, at first I didn't think that it will be longer than 30 min vid... tbh never thought about all these map's specifics.. God I love this game.
Loved the acting, you are very good at enacting the murlock!. Lovely 2 hours of watch. I did not do it all in one go, but it's cool to come back to aswell and watch after I've played a certain map :)
You talking about gnoll wood and peon scouting brought back memories of similar frestration. I generally thumbs down maps I had to scout as orc, but if I played 2v2 with my brother, I would have to scout. Countless peons were sacrificed.
In addition to a tier list, a “map review” series would be incredible. Pointing things out for each race to look out for. Timings, particulars about the creep camps, and so forth.
Turtle Rock is my favorite map ever. It was very interesting to learn pro players perspective, and I get why some things are problematic, but for me there is nothing more fun than Turtle Rock. The fact that you could spawn right next to each other just added to fun for me. On the level I used to play nobody was doing militia rush or crazy stuff like that. But tower rush? All the time. And it was always fine with me.
i love these tier lists. randomly fell into your channel after watching Artosis lose his mind after getting spanked by a 4pool. now I'm itching to replay wc3, which I haven't done since it was released.
17:13 I love how you compare a good map the same way as how chess openings work, where you have options for sequential creeping routes and expansion (in Chess's case: positioning your pieces for strong area coverage) or harassing your opponents in an early rush which all depends on your play style! 😄
at around 146, you know the funny thing about your (Grubby's) story about gnollwood first you talk about how asymetric the map is, and about what a problem it is that one location has a tavern right next to the base, so only they have really easy access, while another player it's far the funny thing is, your story at 146, the close tavern ends up not being used by you, but by your opponent to get a firelord (which was kind of not the problem you were saying was the map's issue :P)
Instead of the final race tier list, he should do a meta-shift tier list, detailing the largest shifts in multiplayer builds and counters due to major balance patches.
Would've been cool to finish the video with a summary of the big Dos and Don'ts (applicable regardless of race) of competitive map making for the game.
