    Splendid video! I've heard some say that they never clean their airgun barrels and that's folly. I have been using the exact same technique as you for years and I've never had any issues. I use Ballistol, it's a fantastic cleaner and oil that works great. Thanks for sharing.

    Very good information, David explains things so very well, he is one of the very best out there! Has a huge streak in him of John Darling which was one of the best, rest his soul. And David James in my opinion and many many other air gunners think he's tops when it comes to air gunning, he is very respected, thank you so much AirgunTV and of course David James.

    Today's barrel, such as the Marmot Militia barrel requires frequent cleaning in order to keep accuracy. I've found 80 pound mono fishing line folded in half (slightly, no knots) does great pushing and pulling it thru the barrel.

    the amount of people that put down airgunners is ridiculous. i can shoot my airgun in my backyard in the suburbs. can you do that with your AR15? i can get 1250 pellets for 15 dollars, how many 5.56x45's can you get for 15 bucks? if i lived in the uk, i could own an airgun, but owning a firearm is completely illegal. airguns are not inferior to firearms. you people need to get this through your heads

      @Beesa10 9 років тому +4

      zach miller I really like airguns because they are relatively clean and quiet and like you said, pellets don't cost that much. You can set up a range and shoot indoors, in the garden etc, places where it wouldn't be practical or safe to shoot a firearm.UK gun laws are strict but owning a firearm in the UK is not completely illegal. You need a certificate which you must go through an application process to get and then renew it periodically whereas you don't need a certificate to own an airgun.

      Exactly I can't own a AR in the UK even if I did get a gun lieance I couldn't own a AR in less it was in 22 rim fire any think bigger like 7.62mm can only be blot action I like to shoot so I use a air rifle it's not all bad for me though as I get to use AR and bigger weapon systems in my job

      +uk spartan You can own an AR15 in the UK with an FAC. I had one in .223. The only difference is they cannot be semi-auto, they have to be converted to straight pull.

    I have had a S410 for 5 years now. I use AA field diablo pellets .22. I use the Napier pellet oil, the red oil in the tiny plastic bottle. I have put well over 5000 pellets through it and it is as accurate today as the day i got it. Thing is, i have never cleaned it once. After each use i spray Napier gun cleaner down the barrel, then leave it pointing down in the cabinet so any excess oil runs out, i use it on the stock as well.That is all i do and i can shoot flies off a cardboard box at 25yds

  • @helicrashpro
    @helicrashpro 10 років тому +2

    I use a pull through like this but I do another section of fly line connected to the patch loop so I can just feed the pull through in the barrel once. After I pull a patch through, I can just pull the loop back through the barrel by the other section of line. So basically I have a patch loop in the middle of my pull through. Hope that makes sense.

    I like my powder burner too but my air springer is harder to shoot and funner. I use regular hopps gun cleaner in the barrel a brush and push Q-tips through. BTW a real man wouldn't put down somebody else because of their choice of target or small game weapon. Have a good one all and keep it positive.

    I think it would be better if at least 3 or 4 or more pieces of cleaning cloth were tied at once at a desired distance in between the cleaning cloths in one string so the string does not have to pulled out and put in again and again. By doing so, only once that the cleaner will have to put in & to pull out the string from the gun barrel. This is how I have been cleaning my rifle barrel. Just my two-cents though.

  • @AirgunTV
    @AirgunTV  11 років тому +4

    It varies - but most shooters will tell you to leave the barrel alone until the accuracy goes off. Once cleaned, you'll need to 'lead-in' the rifling again. Don't zero-up straight away - clean barrels tend to produce more power and a different POI straight after a scrub-through!

      Malcolm Campbell Excellent Idea my friend. For me I have found the cleaner the bore and the less "Magical Pellets" work best. Any oil in the barrel tends to make a quiet gun loud. Nitro-piston and less hyper ammo works great for me. Forget all of the weird tipped or tip impregnated ammo with darts and bb's or whatever. Match the gun to the ammo no problems. Keep the bore clean but do not scrub it down like a regular rifle. I have a bunch of ammo I'll never shoot because they are gimmicks and I didn't realize it at the time. Benjamin Discovery is my favorite for my 22's. Guns may cost too much but ammo and a clean bore need not.

    It's all about accuracy. If you suddenly see your accuracy go off, you may need to clean out the bore... though most PCPs need a certain amount of lead lining in the barrels to get up to full accuracy potential. As David says, it's best to always clean in the direction of the pellet. Which is why he uses a pull-through, rather than a rod.

    good video, many forget the crown is the most important part of accuracy, no metal should ever touch the crown, dings on it add up and soon people wonder why accuracy falls, the rough edges on crown grab the skirt of the pellet dooming it from the start

Simple process but to do but so important to do. Thanks.

    he used the straw as a method of easily slipping the "pull trough" through the tip of the gun at 2:46 , so that it would not get snagged on any baffles, meaning his gun has an integrated silencer. or was just demonstrating a way of getting the pull through through silencer baffles.

    Quite a good tool for an air rifle, but as it is, unless your rifle is suffering from accuracy problems. cleaning the lead out of the barrel will be counterproductive. The reason firearms have their barrels cleaned after every shoot is because modern propellants leave traces of corrosive or otherwise harmful material lining the bore. Air weapons however don't suffer from this problem, just about the only thing deposited on the barrel of an air weapon is the alloy the pellets are made of (usually lead, some alternatives now available). The lead deposit does two things: 1. It lubricates the pellet as it's travelling through the barrel, so one gets higher and more consistent power out of one's air weapon. 2. It protects the barrel from corrosion by providing an insulation layer. The time to clean an air weapon is when leading gets so severe that pellets can no longer effectively engage the barrel's rifling, which usually is reflected in rather poor accuracy. Even then, you want to leave some fouling in the barrel (how much exactly is up for debate), else you'll have to spend another tin of pellets leading in the barrel again until it shoots the way it's supposed to.

  • @AirgunTV
    @AirgunTV  12 років тому

    No it doesn't make it illegal (in the UK) as the law is based on 'power', which is kinetic energy... which is a figure derived from velocity plus mass. So a light pellet will go faster than a heavier one to achieve the same power. 700fps is fine for a lightweight .22 (like the U-Bolt), although a normal .22's 12ft/lb power limit is normally around 600fps. To calculate power in ft/lbs, use this equation: (velocity in fps squared, multiplied by pellet weight in grains) divided by 450240.

    hey good video i just wanna know ive herd that you should only clean your barrel like that when its new and with a wire type brush and then use patches after that . Then after that you only need to run a patch throught the barrel one every 50 shots or so. Is this true, and also i think if you do that you dont have to wait for the barrel to be leaded up for it to perform , thats just what i read on pyramyd air , whats your thoughts about it?

    In answer to your second question, yes... certain pellets CAN make a gun illegal where the law requires a maximum power limit. (See the equation in my earlier reply.) Some guns shoot certain pellets more 'efficiently', so you must always make sure you're on the right side of the law. (Ignorance is never a defence!) And note that while lighter pellets tend to be more efficient than heavier ones in a springer (ie return more power), in a PCP, heavy pellets often return more 'power' than light ones

    Do not clean your barrel often, over cleaning does more harm than good, and I would suggest cleaning only after 1000 shots, but even after 3000 shots is ok. The so called dirt that comes out as seen on the cleaning swab, is NOT dirt at all, but graphite that is applied to pellets by the manufacturer, this substance is necessary and to some degree vital in keeping your barrel lubricated, so the more you clean the barrel the more you are degrading it. Basically just leave the barrel alone.

  • @AirgunTV
    @AirgunTV  12 років тому

    Many barrels DO need to be leaded in. The trick is keeping the lead lining at the right amount. Once it's too leaded-up, it's then 'dirty'... and dirty barrels tend to lose accuracy. So a 'once-through' with a patch ever couple of hundred shots or so may well keep the lining at a decent level, without removing it entirely... and stop the rifling clogging up with so much dirt that it requires a full clean.

    My hands down best cleaning setup, was a small strip of Scotch Brite scrubbing pad, and a wire clothes hanger. WD-40, and away we go... Two passes and a cotton patch to check bore cleanliness, and the airgun was usually clean. I got my best accuracy overall, by leaving the WD-40 in the barrel and allowing it to diesel off.

    the windage is ok most of the time but I get 50/50 chance of shooting high or low (inch above or under the aimed point, on 25 Yrds). Is this the residues of the greasse in the barrel or is it because of the new gas ram?

    In the UK, all air rifles (over 1Joule) are considered 'firearms', but those that produce less than 12ft/lb muzzle energy are exempt from licensing. Above that, a firearms certificate (FAC) is needed. The legal limit for air pistols is 6ft/lb - above that it is considered a 'prohibited weapon' as handguns are no longer legal (since 1997) in the UK. HTH. Nige

    Not very often, some people never do it and say they don't have any problems. I only do it after around 1000 shots.

    Is 3 to 4 inches of cloth ok for a 177 caliber?

    Word of warning, be bloody careful not to put too much in. Once in cadets I put around 4 inches of it on a pull through for the .223 calibre rifle we were using and it jammed up in the barrel. Had to be sent to the gun smiths. DO NOT PUT TOO MUCH IN

    would it make it easier to tie a single strand of the fishing line in the loop with cleaning patch so you pull it back and forth ?

    oh if forgot to mention that u should use a brass wire brush and not any kind of hard metal because that can damage the barrel
