Its only my opinion....
but Brian Cox's portrayal of Hermann Göring is the finest acting I have ever seen.
His interpretation of the man and the mind was indeed flawless. I’m ashamed to say I was almost convinced by that final speech to the Lieutenant.
Yes. I had to remind myself that as a human being Brian Cox is a fine person. I am an actor, so I know what a mensch this guy is. For years he has helped raise money for Diabetes Research and other issues. His portrayal of Hermann Goring is amazing. Brian Cox is one of the best actors that there is.
This was an excellent film.
@@trudigoodman4825 This film is mediocre. Only worth watching because of the great performance of Brian Cox! Couldn't be made today for sure. Because arguments of Brian Cox (Goring) sounds really convincing.. unfortunately...
Its spot on, I like his dark sunglasses he wears

Sam Stone, who plays Julius Streicher, is a Jew whose father survived the Holocaust. It was only with the greatest difficulty that he maintained an impassive face during the scene where films of Nazi concentration camps are shown in the courtroom. Upon completion of the scene, he immediately burst into tears.
Brian Cox claimed that the sequence in which the courtroom is shown a film of Nazi concentration camps required numerous takes. With the actual film being projected, genuine walkouts occurred on-set from crew members who couldn't take watching it anymore.
During the Christmas party, the Russian judge, Gen. Iona T. Nikitchenko states that 20 million Russians died during the war. Three months later in March 1946, during an official interview with the Russian newspaper "Pravda", Joseph Stalin stated that the official death count was only seven million. The 20-million death toll wasn't admitted to until 1956: Premier Nikita Khrushchev gave that total to a Communist Party congress meeting in Moscow. In 1989 during the Mikhail Gorbachev "Glasnost" era, the total deaths were then reported to be 27 million. With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the state archives were opened to research by private historians: the death toll was stated to be as high as 35 to 42 million but not recognized by the state. The research by private academics has caused the state to again shut down the archives.
Captain Gustave M. Gilbert (Matt Craven), the prison psychologist, wrote a book about his experiences during the trial titled 'Nuremberg Diary"' He later emigrated to Israel.
Most of the actors playing the defendants are Canadian, the country where the miniseries was filmed. Herbert Knaup, who plays Albert Speer, is one of the few actual Germans in the cast.
According to Brian Cox, the producers wanted the miniseries to be the first of an anthology of WWII sagas, and they were interested in him returning to star as Winston Churchill. Though the project was never made, Cox would go on to play Winston Churchill in Churchill (2017).
In reality, David Maxwell Fyfe was 46 years old, actually younger than Judge Robert Jackson (53), to whom he is presented in the movie as a considerably older mentor figure. Christopher Plummer, who portrayed Fyfe, was 72 at the time of filming.
In the series, Joachim von Ribbentrop is portrayed by an elderly actor. Ribbentrop was only 52-53 years old during the trial.
In real life Captain Gilbert was fluent in German, which is why throughout the series he is depicted as speaking easily in private with the defendants, Rudolph Höss, Emma Göring, etc.

The part where Christopher Plummer's character is reading the account of the murders in the mass graves brought me to tears, I won't lie.
Even the Soviet judge was shocked....when someone appointed by Joseph friggin Stalin is appalled by the level of cruelty, that's saying a lot.
It's very rare that the perfect cast is put together for a film... This was one of those instances.
Christopher Plummer's Bahamas suntan was a bit off putting actually.
Fun fact, Colonel Andrus is played by Michael Ironside. He also played General MacArthur in Tokyo Trial which which covered the ‘Japanese Nuremberg Trials’.
Ironside is one of the best actors out there, if he’s in the movie, or Tv Show, it’s usually guaranteed to be EXCELLENT.

The opening speech read by Baldwin was outstanding, oh, and it appears wars aren't only about resources but whoever has a historical axe to grind. I'm going to need to read one of these books about Nuremberg, this movie appears to just scratch the surface of the trials.
It didn't even scratch. Begin your reading with Gilbert's Nuremberg Diary.
It doesn't stop surprising me the ability that man has to justify the damage he causes, when he does so and, at the same time, the ability he has to condemn and point out those who have harmed him.
Yes, we have such high ideals but such low performance.
A donor for the cat shelter here was a young secretary during the trials and she reported what she saw daily in to news

In this movie, they tried to make Albert Speer a good man when he used concentration labor inmates to build his weapons, especially V2. During the trial he was protected by the Americans because he spoke good English and had a good education, therefore, he only got 20 years of prison but he would have been hanged if judges knew all we know today about what he did during the war.
Albert Speer gave the lie of "the good Nazi" life. There were no "good Nazi's".
You believe everything you hear up there in Canada? Did you attend this trial? Nope! Nobody helped these criminals and The US hung most of these idiots. I love losers like you who try and bash other countries. Especially Canada that didn’t do anything at the trials. Typical.
I met the director twice, and suspected anti-semitism. Is there a Jewish person in this cast??? Campbell is a Toronto Scottish yokel.
Albert Speer was apologetic at the trial. He was responsible for slave labour (from concentration camps) particularly for the manufacture of weapons in the Ministry of Armaments and War Production. He was also the architect responsible for some of Nazi Parties most famous structures like the Nuremberg Rally Site. However because he was apologetic at the trial, and admitted what he did was wrong, the judges did not want it to look like a kangaroo court, so they took that as a mitigating factor and saved him from the gallows. He wrote books about Hitler after his 20 years in prison, making a lot of money. According to those who knew him personally he was still a Nazi and very anti-semitic away from the media spotlight.

Brian Cox was convincing as Hermann Goring
Goering did NOT surrender to General Spaatz, as is portrayed here. The soldiers he did surrender to brought him to Spaatz to be questioned over a bottle of Scotch, and NOT to be given a party. Spaatz (or "Uncle Tooey", as my mother always called him, as he was her father's closest friend), irritated other military men (though not Eisenhower-who said, "Spaatz just got the job done"). This actor doesn't look much like Tooey, but he moves like him, doesn't have the same pitch of voice, but uses it pretty much like the original. But I am appalled, I tell you, that anyone would dare portray him without his signature mustache, which dated back to WWI (during which he and my grandfather, Henry Berliner, first met). For shame!
My grandmother shared a cruise cabin with Eisenhower's "riught-hand man"; may have been Spaatz. THe wife did not like Ike; said he was an oppotunist. REALLY????

What an interesting comment.
You can repeat that completely meaningless pedantry to distract from your pathetic attempt at moral relativism (and possibly Nazi sympathies) as much as you like.
The fact is that the evidence was so mountainous and had been collected on battlefields in a WAR zone, so challenging it on some esoteric grounds would have kept the trials from moving forward for years even as the bodies of the murdered were still being buried.
As to the second article, the defendants were still, in many cases, trying to pretend the atrocities carried out under their direct and indirect supervision were "myths and lies" while photographs and film footage of the dead and starved were pilling up by the truckload.
No sane person would have granted the defendants the right to mire the court in years of proving things that were blatantly obvious at the end of the most terrible war in human history, which these defendants had publicly and clearly participated in STARTING. In front of the German media itself.
Iraq was a war. You bomb enemy soldiers in war. You don't have your aircraft flying over try to take them prisoner since that's a completely STUPID concept (something you are apparently unable to grasp). If the U.S. had rounded up the survivors of the Iraqi looters in the convoy and summarily shot them, then you might have some kind of a point.
An excellent movie, thanks for posting. But I can't help cringing, at that young US officer creeping up to Goering; all good pals together.
I have often held the view, that he took the cyanide capsule to the cell - unaware or otherwise.
Goring was isolated to bring him down a bit and prevent his influence on other [weaker] defendants, and then that officer seems to undermine it all.
I think the American judge was definitely getting back at the Prosecutor, His face says it all. Sour grapes for not being the head judge.
Not quite as it happened. Brought up together for the verdicts then a day later one by one for sentencing. So they knew the ones who didn't come back had the death penalty.
One thing puzzled me, why was Goering still loyal to Hitler when he ordered his execution?
He knew there was a form of misunderstanding behind it. He knew that Hitler was going through a lot and that Bormann had acquired more and more power by his side. True loyalty isn't broken by this kind of accidents.
FOR THE SAME REASON THE GERMAN PEOPLE WERE SO GULLABLE, THEY TRUELY BELIEVED THEY WERE SUPERIOR RACE OF PEOPLE, THEY STILL DO TODAY. IT IS WHY WE DONT HEAR MUCH FROM THE GERMANS ANY MORE, WHAT I DDO NOT UNDERSTAND IS WHY WE STILL HAVE ANY MILITARY BASES IN GERMANY AT ALL, WE OWE THEM NOTHING, MOST GERMANS ARE ANTI SEMETIC, STILL TODAY.

Gainsbourg could single-handedly sink The Bismarck.
I think if you want a better film made on the Nuremberg trials go for the classic Judgement at Nuremberg with Spencer Tracey, Burt Lancaster, Maxmilian Schell (who won best actor at the Oscars for his role) , Montgomery Clift, Judy Garland, Richard Widmark and Marlene Dietrich. Directed by Stanley Kramer. Just a far stronger film on the subject. Nothing in this TV movie is beating Tracey, Lancaster, Schell or Clift.
But this TV movie is good solid 3 hour film. Brian Cox is by far the stand out as Goring, although his Scottish accent slips in and out in places. I thought Christopher Plummer was slightly wasted. And I've seen better performances from Alec Baldwin. I think what this film lacks what 1961 film had in spades is the victims testimonies especially Clift's moving performance. Charlotte Gainsbourg is pretty much in and out after 5 minutes, she does well with her role. Besides one other scene, it's definitely lacking in that. Plus American TV bosses can't help throwing in a romance to appease some viewers. Honestly you could have cut out Jill Hennessy's character, and it wouldn't have hurt the film at all. She looks great but her character wasn't needed. I did like Michael Ironside and Matt Craven performances.
Well worth a look, just for Cox's performance alone.
That was based on a different war crimes trial of the judiciary only. It basically only covered the misdeeds of one person. Schell was the best actor in it, in my opinion. I liked this other version because it was made for television and reached more people, it also clearly showed how the arrogant americans treated the Russians.
About 75 years since that trial and still there are people who would deem actions like those of the Nazi's did "necessary " and "justifiable" where their own politics and ideologies are concerned. I believe i don't have to speak any names of organizations or people here, many of you will know exactly who i refer to.

The pretence of a 'fair trial' was ludicrous. It was a foregone conclusion from the moment a trial was even considered. Can you imagine having such an trial and most of the defendants are acquitted? LOL This is not to say that they shouldn't have hanged.
So, you’d rather they’d not bothered with a trial, and instead preferred a summary series of executions? That, right there, is the epitome of the triumph of superior might. That same mindset caused the Second World War in the first place having been employed in the drafting of the Treaty of Versailles. The Soviets, having suffered the greatest loss of life by far and away, might well have gone down that route had it not been for the intervention of the Western allied powers in the latter months of the war. One can, of course, say with some reliability that America was and is somewhat hypocritical when exacting punishment upon an enemy belligerent given its own lengthy list of transgressions during both world wars and in international conflicts since, SE Asia being the most obvious example. However, in this case, whether or not you think them show trials, it is relatively easy to argue and prove that without them, the war might well have reignited with the utter destruction of Germany at the hands of the Soviet Union, and we would most likely be looking at a very different European landscape today as a result. Sincerely yours, a graduate in History with a specialism in 20th century military history.
@@peterweatherley7669 I simply stated that the Nuremberg Trial wasn't a 'fair trial', but a political showpiece to legitimise revenge. I've also satted quite clearly that many were clearly guilty. You don't appear to have a clear or nuanced mind. The idea that 'the war' could have 'reignited' is utter nonsense. Germany was completely and utterly devastated and little more than smoking rubble.Even at the time, the Nuremberg Trials were very controversial, with most of the military commanders of the UK and the US opposed to them, because of the ugly precedent they would set. Aspects of this 'unfairness' involved facing charges that didn't formerly exist, like 'genocide' and 'waging aggressive war war' in tandem with denying the defence of 'justification', for any of Germany's actions. Just one instance here is the fact that Julius Streicher was hanged for running a newspaper which was deemed to be anti-semitic. I imagine that the entirely of your knoweldge in this area could be written on the back of a postage stamp, and what you don't know would fill a library.
@@richardduplessis1090 Dear, me. I’ve evidently failed to express my argument with sufficient clarity. By the by, I’ve studied the Nuremberg Trials (this film only depicts mere snapshots of the first of many) in some considerable depth, so I do know what I’m talking about, as it happens. I will play fair with you and state that I am something of a revisionist when it comes to the 20th century, but I stand by my original assessment. Germany was not entirely reduced to rubble; Many cities and even some larger towns remained relatively intact and functional at the end of the war. Its industrial capacity had been almost entirely destroyed, along with a good bit of the various utilities nationwide, that’s true, but the Teutonic predisposition to discipline being what it was and still remains to this day, it did not take long for that capacity to return to normal postwar. As to my point regarding the Soviets, they were desperate to avenge the deaths of millions of their own people as a consequence of Operation Barbarossa. They would have quite happily let the war continue until they’d reached that particular aim. As controversial as the Trials were at the time, it has since been agreed by the majority of historians writing in this century that they were necessary in preventing another outbreak in hostilities.
Given the time period and the crimes that they committed it is amazing that these men even got a trial. If I had been in possession of a gun I would have shot them all. Of course I was one year old at the time. But I lost relatives that I never met. And if they had conquered America, I would not even be here to have written this.
@@trudigoodman4825 Defending the Rule of Law, which is what the Allies were purporting to do, isn't advanced by abandoning it. Have to view it within historical context. That's the point of a Documentary style film.
Most interesting that the black's we're selling their own people into slavery for a few bucks.
The slave trade was awful, but it did not deliberately kill over 30 million people in less than 10 years.
In the trailer for the film 'Troy' the voice-over stated enthusiastically 'the biggest armada in history'. Wish these american film makers would employ a historian. The biggest armada historically recorded was the allied landings in Normandy in 1944. In the Gulf War, the USA media was peddling stories about the US army being 'the first country to put females in a combat role'. What! we said. Russia had whole squadrons of female fighter pilots, women in every theatre of war. And going back in history, the Celts and the Vikings had women soldiers. Pays to research, as you say.
The ~15 million souls affected by the slave trade is actually quite a similar number to the total affected by the holocaust, its at least similar enough that the statement is not offensive, surely? Both are terrible evils in their own right and to acknowledge that in one does not diminish the evil of the other..

"Crimes Against Humanity" become charges only after the criminals suffer total defeat. If it were not true then Palestine would be a free country and many Israeli officials would be in prison or other for THEIR crimes against humanity.
Only the winners get to charge and convict for such crimes... which means it will rarely happen again.
Really?
