You da man! I pulled out all the leads and tested the fans with a wire to the battery. They worked. I then checked the ground wire and it was fully clipped in, but loose inside. After cleaning and gentle reconnection, the fans came to life! MWA HA HA HA HA!!!!! NO MONEY FOR YOU, KIA SPARE PARTS SHOP!!!!!!
I have a 2007 Sedona and this happened to me. I replaced the fan module, and it was not the problem. I did find that the bottom connector you talk about was bad. It overheated and was corroded. I cleaned up the ends with a wire brush, and placed some electronic paste on it. I then crimped the fitting to make it tighter. I also took the relay off, and replaced it, ($25 at the dealer). Once everything was on, i reset the code and drove around. It has now been 2 years with no over heating.
mywickedness thanks for sharing! That is going to save someone a lot of headache & money while repairing theirs. They do not give away those fan modules..
Man this prolly helped me I haven’t tried anything as I just watched but my ground burns the connection in the module think I need to check the relay cuz I tested the amps in one of the fans and the ground and it doesn’t seem it’s pulling too much amps still tryna figure it out
Thanks for the video mate. You showed me all the component locations. I was lucky, the relay contacts had waxy grease on them causing high resistance. Cleaned up and both fans now working.
Thanks for pointing out the relay. The book says it's in the engine fuse box. I had seen the relay but was not sure until i saw your video. My failure is identical to yours except no problems with the passenger fan motor. Also, with everything on and working well on the ac, I am getting no voltage out of the module outputs to the fans. I will check the ground and test the relay in the morning.
the fan control modules go on these things too, probably becase of the bad ground. mine went a few months after fixing this bad ground issue. Be really careful taking off the ground wire connector, it's easily broken, mine broke, the one at the wrecking yard was broke too. i found a controller on amazon for 90 bucks that seems to be working ok, no luck with $20 one i got at pick n pull.
Hey there. Great video! I just recently got a 2006 Kia Sedona LX from a good friend of mine. The A/C doesn't work in it. Don't know if it's the clutch or what. After I watched a different video on UA-cam, I wanted to see if the fans were running. I started the van, looked under the hood. Neither fan runs. The van doesn't overheat. Temp gauge shows a little below half. So the fans only come on at certain times?
Correct, the fans only kick on when the engine temp starts to rise. If they don’t kick on when your engine temp rises then you could have an issue like I posted.
@@thejoki04 The temp gauge rises a only to a little under halfway. I can't hear the fans come on but at the same time, I have the blower on full speed. I guess the fans wouldn't come on until the temp gauge started getting towards hot?
You are correct. If you have your a/c on max & your engine temp is not rising to the point that your fans kick on, your fan relays are most likely fine & it’s a problem with the a/c. If u want to test your fans just leave the car running for awhile & eventually they should kick on as the engine temp rises. For your a/c I would start by depleting the Freon, then recharging them with some cans from Walmart. I recommend using a warm wash cloth/towel to wrap the a/c cans in while you recharge, shaking them continuously as it will push more Freon. Sometimes if you try to recharge the a/c Freon without depleting it, it may not work.
With your car running and full a/c on blast, you should hear your a/c compressor kick on & off at some point. If it’s low on Freon it probably won’t. Could be a Freon issue, or a bad compressor.
check under the cap of the diagnostic dongle hanging in there, I found tons of green goblin shorting it out, it was hanging upside down and the cap was collecting water I think. what was that relay called? no one is listing a fan control module power relay on their websites
@@thejoki04 I bet the slow fan motor (bad bearing) causes the control module to burn out, good call on changing it too, bad ground will too. thanks for making the video, 100 kar karma points for you! .....follow up.... it was just the bad ground on the bottom plug, I took it off cleaned the contacts and threw some dialectric in there and it works like a champ.
the lower connection is not ground. It's 12VDC and draws a lot of current (powers both fans). Measuring 12V at the connector does not mean it working (fooled me for days). If the connector cannot pass enough current, the fans won't run. Clean it well and check any upstream splices.
I have 12v on 3 of the 4 terminals of the relay when plugged in, a new fan controller, and I verified both fans work when direct powered. Still looking for the actual ground
Thank you for this video, I am having the same issues just replaced the thermostat and cooling sensor but I think it was a waste of time has to be that relay or fan control module
Thanks for this video, the mechanic said the module was bad but when I checked the ground plug it was corroded and not even plugged in. I'll need to replace that or connect with alligator clips. I am having trouble disconnecting the plug above the ground - do you have any tips on how to do that?
@@thejoki04 thanks so much, it was stuck so that's why just pressing down on the clip wasn't working which is why I was wondering if there was something else I had to do. I had to use a screwdriver to help lever the plug out after depressing the clip.

I have a 2012 with neither radiator fan nor AC compressor fan coming on. Shop recommends replacing both fans, coolant temp sensor, and fan relay (controller). I’m thinking to try the relay first- is the compressor fan tied into the same relay? If so, I could see why neither fan works if the relay is bad.
I’m not sure if it controls both, but it’s a cheap enough fix to try and see! You could try hard wire fan controller directly from battery to see if that fixes fans, that would tell you if the controller is bad.
Did you have any luck, this is the exact problem I am having. AC compressor and these fans stopped same time, fans good direct, checked fuses, replaced this relay and controller.
Sorry, I did not get the notification of your comment. My relay was mounted to the front right by the radiator. It had a rubber boot over the top protecting it & was mounted on a plastic tab.

Any suggestion on fixing the ground wire as the clip broke (extremely frail ) having similar issue ? can i buy just the clip to go over the ground wire ? what are my options?
I would look inside the clip to see if the metal pieces are still in there. If they are, I would put them on and electrical tape it to secure it. You could also cut the wire & hard wire an alligator clip on, then tape it.
When does both fan supposed to start? I have a sedona 2010 and i've noticed that they dont start running until my air conditioning is on. Its it supposed to be like that? Also on my kia sportage 2019 is the same way.
I always start with the “simple” things first, & rule things out by process of elimination. 1. check for coolant - if full u know hoses are prob good, otherwise there’d be a leak that you’d notice. 2. Try to think of how your vehicle acts normally- while it’s running sitting in the driveway, you normally hear the fans kick on once it starts getting warm to help cool the motor- this is what I noticed on the van, that I could not hear the fans kick on as it got hot. This told me there was a fan issue, or a thermostat issue because thermostat plays a big part.
@@thejoki04 well I just discovered my cooling fans are not running. Also we are leaking antifreeze. Near the bottom I think. We are actually actively working on it today.
