One of my favorite drummers not only for his playing abilities, but for his ability to teach and explain things well.

Brother Dave, I’m about to be 50yrs old this month of November and I can truly say that YOU have been a great inspiration in my drum life! From the age of 14, when I first heard you performing with Chick Correa, it took me to a different level of learning and understanding! I appreciate you man! You, Vinnie and Dennis allowed me to become my own drummer, but with help from you awesome gentleman!✊🏾🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💯🎼🥁

59 This July. It is nice seeing the old dawgs with no tricks rolling over the new kids on the block that don’t even know what the different sounds between Reel to Reel, Vinyl, 8 Track, cassette can do to your tonality and understanding of drums molding all the ensembles variety of tone together for one solid stamp of who you want to be as a musician. Keep on Beaten On them skins!

Same here! I don’t know of ANY players that came of age sometime in the mid-80’s that didn’t look up to these guys. I feel incredibly blessed to still be able to refer to him for guidance, to this very day.

Hey Dave, I'm late to THIS party. You are an excellent Teacher and appreciate your videos - great help to me. I'm 71 yo, retired now, and play Non Gigging at Home, about 1 hour a day to My Music (No metal, but all other Rock, Pop, Blues Rock, Country Rock styles mostly). I resurrected playing drums after a 50 YEAR Hiatus [1969]. What I have learned after returning is how crucial Drum Heads & Drum Tuning are to the sounds achieved. I knew nothing of this back in My day 1967-1967. I have some Physical restrictions with spinal arthritic conditions (and in some joints too). I have a specific "weird" tuning / sound issue to submit. I have a DW Design Series Nickel over Brass 14 X 6.5 Snare drum. purchased used in 2021. It came delivered with a HD Dry Batter head -and it was Cranked. It had a terrific, Night and Day better sound than my other snares. A few weeks ago, I had to replace the Batter head on the DW with a new HD dry one. I am unable to achieve the sound I had when I got it. I replaced the batter head on another Maple Snare (PDP Concept maple Kit) with a HD dry head as well. Last week, in frustration, I put the DW snare on top of my 16 inch Floor Tom to get it out of the way. As I played (using the PDP snare in the stand), doing a Fill, I hit the DW on top of the Tom, and was astounded at the sound! It sounded exactly what I was looking to achieve - like a Ludwig Supraphonic - Jon Bonham syle!. Take the DW off the floor tom and it changes, put it back on and it is good again. Even the PDP snare sounds better as well. I've posted this event on a number of Drummer Forums. One poster commented saying, I was playing 2 Drums in this manner; another poster kiddingly said that I just discovered a new Snare Stand!. Maybe somebody here can explain this to me? BTW, another poster suggested to change the Batter head to a UV1 or 2. Did that, and did not like the sound from the UV 1 on the PDP snare [maple] to my ear. I did not chnage the DW snare batter head yet. THX for everybody's attention.

I should add to my comments..... By watching this video (and some others), I have learned how much the sound of the Drums are affected by digital enhancements and Muffling. I did not know of this stuff too.

Very detailed and in depth analysis full of ideas and tips, not only about tuning but also about drum sound in general and how every voice of the instrument will interact with the rest of the music. Dave you're a treasure. Thank you so much.
Me, when I want to find the perfect 5th interval I sing the bass line of a latin bossa nova. The bass usually follows the chords playing fifths.

I've always used Remo head's, clear, initially when i had a pearl BLX, pin stripes.. then
Coated when i play maple drums, coated emperor's.
Remo IMO are the best hand's down, they sound a lot more natural than all else.
Beautiful playing there from the master, great tuning tips... second to none!
    Thank you. :)

Hello Mr. Weckl, i tried the tuning tips and it worked just perfect. I started with a 8" Tom with a "G" and tuned down to "D" and "G". it sounds absolutely fine. "Bottom" to "head" a minor third. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO

Your drums sound really great! The placement of the mics (and what kind of mic) on the toms also have a huge impact on the "wooom" "wooom" sound you get when you play the bass drum and the snare drum.

Someone told me that metal snares have a “warmer” sound than wood. I disagree, because given them using the same heads, the metal has a brighter sound, and a different sustain. Feedback welcome please!

What kind of Evolution crash is closest to the camera? It looks flat with a tapered edge. Or is that an optical illusion?

    • @ASpoonfulOfJimmy

I believe its the 17 inch Effeks Evolution crash. It's extra thin and has a turned down edge.
