90's cars of almost any segment have a lot of personality. A lot of them are unfortunately modified to the point of being undrivable or just for show. There's an undeserved "hatred" for the 90's Hondas on some parts of the world due to that. Those cars have an already proven potential on the chassis and engine for a very fun car if it's done right, even on a budget. I have a '95 EG6 that I plan to take care of and modify. The induction noise from those 6 carbs was something to behold. And the 4 cylinders sounded very similar to this. The 2.0 alfetta my dad had sounded like this. Thank God for Alfa Romeo, the world would have been boring without them
Harris is the only presenter I actually like on Top Gear knows cars and can really appreciate the mechanical link, the engagement that actually makes driving fun.I'm still driving a manual, I'm in no hurry to get an auto, digital , paddle shift, infotainment bloody fun hoover extractor just yet.
I'm building the Japanese version of this privately (getting workshops to do the physical work) and its so hard. There is so much involved in creating a polished car even if, at face value, the mechanical changes are minimal. This video gives me hope that maybe what i'm trying to do will be worth it in the end?
In the eighties I had 3 alfas, first one was a 76 giulia 1600 supernova, that ended in the side a van that didn't see me overtaking, kept the remaining in the garden and moved to a 2l coupe Bertone (the car in the video), this was really amazing, would get your juices flow, that went in a tree, found a bare body custom bi-color alpine metalic blue top and silver metallic bottom with white racing stripes from front to rear, this was a 1965 1300 giulia fully chromed 4 head lights front and decided to use absolutely every part I could get from the 76 1600, reverse pedals, original the axes was down and not assisted by engine manifold, all interior swapped, I had so much fun with that car... there wasn't a place I would go that people wouldn't ask me how much I wanted for it. Few months later I found a 2.4l rally engine in a small garage that was used as a depot by Alfa during a summer race 10 years earlier. Got the block for peanuts and decided to overhaul it and install in the Giulia. I could never find out exactly how many HP that engine developed but with the double weber 46 it was said to be 240. Mounted 195/14 r 50 on the original 165 rims, I have had many cars since those days and some pretty fast ones but is it real memories or just nostalgia I do not think I had more pleasure driving ever than with this car. Thing to remember is that in those days gears were not to drive over 185km/h regardless of the power so the gears were very short and you had to change pretty much all the time to stay above 4500, the cars were designed for small country roads, hill climbing, this car was fitted with 4 disk brakes that sustained heat pretty well , a 5 short gear box, Independent mc-pherson suspension so was very much advanced for any series cars of the 70's. no way you could go anywhere without feeling that desire to push it faster in every corner. it had the small tipicall front windows in the door frame corner, it had a particularity in that the wheel nuts where reverse threaded from one side to the other to use the wheel rotation to keep them tight . Unfortunately the European cars of the 70's/ 80's and more specially alfas after they were taken over by Fiat would rot just looking at them and in those days I could not afford a complete body work, the chassis started to be soft, rust started to show under the doors so the best I could do was giving it to the local Alfa club and let them do whatever would be best of it. Another thing to remember is that as I see on the roads if you drive a fun car (usually cheap) no one can keep up with you, the guy behind is not going to destroy his GT3 just to show you his goes faster, so if you have the money to buy a GT3 or a GTR even, remember you will have much more fun driving a megane or a civic R to it's max because you will have less fear of loosing big. However the fun of driving a giulia or a 110 alpine, a cooper S , a r5 turbo, in a deserted back country road early sunday morning is way way more fun than going round a track in a Lambo.
I don’t think there is another car that I want to own more than this Chris ‘s enthusiasm in this video is totally infectious, totally superb, I hope he bins top gear and comes back to UA-cam!!
we Italians are famous for the things we ruined after having conceived them. Alfa Romeo is just one example of what I'm saying ... unfortunately. Forgive that English, did my best...;)
Yeah, but you do it with more panache than anyone. That's why I had an Alfa Giulietta spyder, a couple of Fiats, and now a Ducati ST3. Do wish the fuckers would hold up, though.
Alfa Romeo, Lancia... what else? Ferrari is now only about marketing and 0 italian passion, Lamborghini was sold to the germans :/ Maserati making bussiness in the USA... Suddently the only nation that made cars with their heart, with PASSION and LOVE are fading away. If not Italy than there is no hope for the future.
What a proper driver's car. A throwback in so many ways. Love it! Modern sports cars can get the heck outta here with their electronics, gadgets and turbos, regardless of how fast they are.
What a delightful video. When I was a kid the GTA was the car that I wanted, but could not afford. So I got a Fiat Sport Coupe, moded the engine and added an Ansa exhaust, Koni shocks, and BWA wheels. To this day it remains the most fun car I have owned, and this video brings home the pure exhilaration of driving a car with just the bare essentials. Who needs all the modern creature comforts? Just get down to the basics and go driving.
For me, there are only one real sportcars .... the italian !!! If you never have driven an italien car, you don`t know what it means to drive a beautiful exciting and emotional car. Every fiber of my heart loves these cars. Especially my 3.2 busso. This is real love
I bought a GT Junior for £420 back in 1977..In 12 months of ownership I had ONE day when everything worked on it..... But boy,... What a day that was....
OH my God! I'm drooling! It brings back so many memories of the Alfa's I've owned since 1979 (1966 Alfa Romeo Gulia 1600 Spider Veloce , 1976 Alfetta GT 2000, highly modified). That Alfaholics version is super well balanced in power and suspension to drift so easily and precisely, reminds me of my !976 Alfetta GT 2000. Just feathering the throttle while making minor adgustlemnt to then stering wheel. While the machine is just eating up the road. SOOOOOoooooGOoooooooooooooooooood...Thanks for sharing .
Exactly what is missing from modern cars; simplicity. I know most of the day to day muppets who don't care about cars, want all those ruinous gadgets and bullcrap, which plague the industry currently, but I wish all manufacturers would at least take the time to make a cost efficient, simple sports car, like they used to. Better yet, bring out the tooling from some of the legendary models in the past and make them again for enthusiasts to buy new again but in large numbers like before, to bring down the costs and make it affordable. There is no point in bringing back simple cars, if like this Alfa, it's not affordable for most people, no matter how good it might be. It would also contribute to bringing back the excitement in the automobile in younger generations, by creating obtainable and yet genuinely amazing automobiles they can aspire to, just like us older guys have had in the past.
enigmaPL It could not happen. Engine would not comply with emission requirments and then theres all the safety systems that have to be lugged around. About the closest you could get for a very good price is a mx5 with a super charger kit on it. Still cost abt 5k on top of the car to do properly. Gives just on 200 bhp on the 1.8 with 10psi boost pressure
@@gothicpagan.666 "From the simple to the complex", a truism...Yes emissions, when you've hooked up your car to a four-gas analyzer, and according to the PPM numbers, you realize your car is cranking out pollutants equivalent to dozens of "well tuned" other cars, you'll then realize what's going on. I won't even address the safety issues...what it would be like to smack your head into those roll-cage bars...caving in your head...picture someone hitting you in the head with a 1 1/2 meter long piece of 2 1/2" steel pipe...

What a dream car! When we were dating, my girlfriend's neighbor stored an '70 Alfa GTA in a shed next her place. Covered in dust, there it sat while I periodically begged to buy it and put it back on the road. He couldn't let it go. Instead, I bought a used 1980 Fiat Spider and modified that to my heart's content, but I never stopped thinking about that Alfa...
I like the fact proper little segments like this are being uploaded to UA-cam. It's a nice change from the pointless 3 minute previews which I'm used to seeing from other TV shows.

It depends on where he is. If it's a JDM car, it's an EG, if not it's certainly an EF. Civics from this era were released a year before in Japan.

I don’t think there is another car that I want to own more than this
Chris ‘s enthusiasm in this video is totally infectious, totally superb, I hope he bins top gear and comes back to UA-cam!!
One of the best Car Clips of all time. Chris Harris + Alfa Romeo = Pure LOVE & Emotion!
My childhood dream car, A L I V E !! So beautiful and that noise... Thank You Chris.
Saw a GTAm absolutely pants a plethora of 911’s and have loved them ever since. One of my favourite cars
"modern sports car designers should drive one of these to remember what to do" started with a Kia stinger ad... kek
That isn't a sports car though, it's a GT
i thought the stinger was a good car, according to a lot of auto journalists
My God. The sound of the engine and exhaust reverbing/ echoing through the bodywork is amazing!!
we Italians are famous for the things we ruined after having conceived them. Alfa Romeo is just one example of what I'm saying ... unfortunately. Forgive that English, did my best...;)
Eddie Dantès Alfa is reborn! Stelvio 7:51
Lancia 😪
the whole world is going down the drain my friends, not only Italy
I'd love to have this on one side of my garage and a Lancia HF Lusso on the other.
Who is here in 2021 still watching this car in complete awe! Great driving from Harris - the want is strong with this Alfa!
I bought a GT Junior for £420 back in 1977..In 12 months of ownership I had ONE day when everything worked on it..... But boy,... What a day that was....
I know the feeling. I had a Berlina for 4 years, and very few days when everything worked. 😆
Le vecchie Alfa mi fanno venire i brividi !!!!
Bellissima 😍😍😍
Beautiful ...I fell in love with one of these in 1996 and I am so glad you seem to feel the same .. thank you for reminding me I have great taste
The sound the looks the drive...im in love 😍
One of the best car reviews of all time.
It would also contribute to bringing back the excitement in the automobile in younger generations, by creating obtainable and yet genuinely amazing automobiles they can aspire to, just like us older guys have had in the past.
enigmaPL
Caterham Seven is the cure
enigmaPL It could not happen.
I agree but safety?
Damn. You are right.
Ever time I see one of your Videos CHRIS it makes me go drive Fiesta ST on three wheels, I’m 70 and still love the fell of Speed and Dancing through the Twisties.
I'm glad to see Neil filmed this, does he work for Top Gear as well?
Those old 105/115 Alfas are seriously beautiful cars!
My favorite car ever.
I have to admit , this video is becoming my go to happy place on the internet. It lifts my spirits like almost nothing else.
How this vid got dislikes is beyond me. I have a mk1 escort currently being built with a yb cosworth engine that I am going to convert to fuel injection throttle bodies.. people don't understand why I would do this... THIS is why.. pure driving!
Alfa Romeo number one
❤🍀🇮🇹
año modelo ??
I like the fact proper little segments like this are being uploaded to UA-cam. It's a nice change from the pointless 3 minute previews which I'm used to seeing from other TV shows.
This was already one of my fav Alfa’s already sooo this is like god
Ho consumato un treno di gomme a furia di vedere questo video, non ne posso fare a meno, ho avuto per 12 anni un'Alfa GT Junior elaborata dal mitico Franco Angelini di Roma, bellissimi ricordi e rimpianti.
And this is why I love earlier Alfa's so much. Absolutely beautiful cars.
This is one of the most inspiring petrolhead commentaries in bloody ages. Thank you Chris Harris!
looks spectacularly fun
That little car is incredible..Chris Harris is the greatest..thanks for sharing.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this car and this video! Harris is at his best when he's behind the wheel of a car like this, kudos for a job well done to Alfaholics!
I watch this clip regularly, just like revisiting a favourite song. Just brilliant!
THIS over the singer every single day of my life
As much as I'm drooling my ass off right now, I don't think I could pick one. Alfa sounds lovely.
Andre Tennis This over anything classic.
Both for me please !
Too expensive!
Singer has street credentials in Cali
I’m totally in love with almost every piece of jewellery which have the Alfa Romeo logo on it!
MADE IN ITALY!
Actually in a small town near Bristol, UK 😂
@@seanmichaelp724 it is a bad copy of the Alfa Romeo, an Italian car
@@Specchio88 Yikes "bad copy", looks like the world's motoring journalists disagree on that one. "Vastly improved" sounds more like it.
@@seanmichaelp724 journalists can say what they want ... This is still a copy of an Italian car from the 70s ...
@@seanmichaelp724 just search the web
Chris, it's absolute delight to watch you drive.
This is sooo beautiful - I simply love it!!!
I always come back to this video because I’m absolutely in love with this car
My first car was a 1976 alpha Romeo Alphetta Gt 4 door. 4 cyl. 5 speed
Don't you mean an Alfa Romeo Alfetta?
An Alfetta with "ph" ? Rare! :-)
what an awesome machine! you sold us short with the video in terms of its duration Chris! Absolutely sensational video! nice driving as per usual mate. love the intro music also .
