FYI, chrysler tech here. The "perform service" only means that you need a ccv filter. You don't need the egr cleaning until 120k miles, and even then, they are usually perfectly fine and don't benefit from the service.
@@rticul8862 I got a question that always has multiple answers. What are your thoughts on the fluid flushes on everything? Necessary? Also transmissions. Flushing fluid and filter changes? Good idea or don’t Touch if it isn’t broke? Thanks.
@@rticul8862 cool thanks I’ve changed that awhile back , I was gonna have a shop clean my DPF filter but I decided to get a low mileage DPF filter pipe a Shop quoted me 4 k to clean my DPF and most of the cost was taking it off and putting back on ? If I was I might as well put a weight reduction kit on it.. but thank you for the service tip

Look in your owners manual and you'll find the only thing that needed to be changed was the CCV filter. Ram did away with the requirement to clean the EGR filter when they started using DEF, 2013 as I recall, and the "67,500" service actually jumps up to an even higher interval with the 5th Gens I believe. The actual service manuals have the correct data but the dealers always seem to go with the requirement on the older configurations.
@@jamesvuxta8723 2013+ trucks run fewer EGR cycles because they run more SCR/DEF so they don’t clog as often. The EGR maintenance interval mileage is a lot longer on DEF trucks. Therefore newer trucks should have fewer EGR issues.
I paid UP for a 2002 F350 last year when prices were still high. My truck has a flatbed and had 149K on it when I bought it. I drove it from Springfield, MO back to Northern New England. I wound up taking her to a local diesel shop and I paid about another 3K getting her sorted out. My truck is a pre emissions dream and I have ZERO regrets. Sometimes you get what you pay for! ✊🏿
Newer has never been better. I was told by my Grandfather to buy used but cared for as opposed to spending big bucks for new when I was 12 years old. I am 75 now and practiced what he preached except for a new Pontiac GrandPrix in 1997, which was a lemon, and suffered a $6500.00 cash loss.
Same here. My god father always told me to buy used well care vehicles instead of new or certified pre owned. After two bad experiences will never buy used well care again. Will only buy new or used certified pre owned. The money you might save you will end up paying it in post repairs over the years and headaches
Nice video. Not to pour salt on the wound, but Rock Auto sells that crankcase breather for about $60 and those gaskets for line $6 each...next time. Either way you're helping to empower folks to save a bunch of $ with some easy to do DIY maintenance. Thanks! PS: Nice to see Roxy! She's been missing for awhile!
Legit got the same message a month ago around the same mileage as you too. Changed the ccv filter and cleared the service message the same way. Now that i now about the ccv cleaning I’ll take care of that too. $2k for those two services is insane. Thanks for the video you explained everything perfectly
Don't think it's Insane. I thought he said 1300.00 That's all labor cost. Labor is not free in a shop or any shop. That's why I'm a DYI mechanic. I don't complain about shop labor. I buy parts and do my thing.
Some notes, The CCV will continue trigger perform service if not replaced. it checks pressure, also the EGR valve is not designed to be cleaned on all 6.7 Cummins after DEF system implementation.
The crazy part about my 2021 Ram 3500 HO Mega Cab is the engine bay looks like the day I picked it up. It takes some time to keep things clean but damn this truck engine/bay looks dirty as hell. Glad to see you’re doing all your own maintenance. I do all mine except the transmission service. I do oil, oil filter, fuel filters, cabin filter, and these types of services myself. No need to spend that kind of money if you can do them yourself. Just keep a record of everything you do and mileage for any warranty stuff if applicable. Thanks for the video.
Welcome to owning a heavy duty diesel truck! I bought my CCV filter at Autozone. Works great and has a lifetime warranty for $140.00. I’ve already changed it twice for free. I hotshot so I rack up the miles quick. Also I’ve reused my egr gaskets with no issues. Don’t spend money you don’t need to spend.
i think cummins doesnt include egr cleaning anymore on the newer trucks as a recommended service. they started in with the first 6.7s but some dealerships are probably looking to make more money and/or have not updated their service recommendations.
Manufacturers and dealers operate in such a way that they try to make it impossible for you to do any maintenance on your vehicle without a headache for you the owner not to mention the rate they charge. Thanks for your videos.
138K and I've never cleaned my ERG on my 2013. No one ever stated at my dealership that in needed to be done. Yes, I have my truck serviced by the dealership when I can't get to it. Good vid! Thanks for posting!
Very nice hourly rate for the job. I'd purchase an older vehicle with lower mileage and do as you said, replace the engine when needed. You've helped a lot of Cummings owners understand what needs to be done when the time comes or what is ahead of them as they approach that mileage. Informative video as always. Thank you.
I believe you missed a part of the egr system cleaning for the quoted $2000. I believe that price also includes cleaning the egr cooler which is much more in depth. Even at dealer prices 2k for those 2 services is robbery. I hope I am right.
I'm glad i watched this video. I just bought my first Cummins. I started watching the channel when you picked up the red 2nd gen at auction. I've also got one of those. I bought my truck with 58k on the clock and asked the dealership if they would perform the 60k service which they declined to do i wanted the truck and jumped on it. this service is due now thank you for this video i know it's a little older but it's definitely helping guys like me. Thanks Randy.
I would never allow my diesel to go over 5k before giving it an oil change. I don't care what the computer says. Your asking for problems and that's how some tucks get bad reviews. People abuse them until they break then say there truck is a pile of crap. Take care of your trucks people, oil is cheap your engine and transmission are not. Thanks for the content.
Great video. It really makes one stop and think about how much is not being said at these dealerships when selling used cars. I've heard some stories that have blown me away just so a dealer can flip a vehicle. "Buyer beware"!
That's alot of dough brother just for a little bit of work. Garages today charge an arm and a leg just for a little bit of work. It's best to do the work yourself and to know how to do it. That's key.👍✌️👌
Great video! You showed that this is a straight forward procedure using basic tools. No Witchcraft or Magic involved. Great job. I would let the new Ram go and get that pre emissions one. Way cheaper and less B.S. to deal with.
I just bought my Cummins in December of 2023, BUT ! i watched your video before i bought the truck and feel confident that i am competent enough as a novice diesel enthusiast to get the job done. It's Friday, May 24th. I'll be using your video as a guide. And follow up with you afterward.
I drive a 2017 Cummins Ram 3500 that I bought new. I now have about 130,000 miles on it. Half the year I am towing an RV, either 15,000 or 6500 lbs, and the other half of the year I run empty. I'm just about to change the CCV filter for the second time. Apparently it is not wise to let it go longer, and it causes other issues if neglected. The EGR valve clogging up sounds weird to me. I have never had an issue or message about mine. I have changed the differential fluids, 68RFE transmission fluid, and transfer case fluid twice so far. I use Peak Platinum DEF, after seeing a UA-cam video of a guy showing the condition of his DEF injector which was already clogging at 10,000 miles using regular Peak DEF. The more he used the Platinum fluid, the less white deposits there were on the injector. I assume this applies to inside the SCR unit, where you don't want deposits building up. I use Diesel Kleen as a fuel additive. Until Diesel Kleen, Cummins wouldn't allow any fuel additives to be used without voiding the Cummins warranty. Cummins not only approves Diesel Kleen, they actually recommend using it. It also raises the centane of the fuel, and that supposedly means less soot produced, and less for the DPF to deal with and eventually get clogged with. I have an app on my iPhone that tells me that I average 881 miles between regens. I also monitor 5 EGT sensors with the same app that are already in place from the factory. Cooler running is not better, and produces soot for the DPF to deal with. Above 700 - 750 F, the DPF is not doing much, as there is not much soot being produced. If I am towing I am usually around 700 - 900F EGT, which is great. If I am not towing, I can't get the EGT up to even 700F, so I just know I am sending soot to the DPF. The Cummins likes to work and using it as a daily driver empty is not something I really like to do. Idling is bad too for running cool EGTs. Oil has always been changed at the dealer at the recommended 15,000 mile interval. I sent oil samples off to Blackstone Labs for analysis at 75,000, and again at 90,000 miles. Blackstone's report said the oil was in such good shape that I should extend the interval to 17,000 miles and test again. I won't bother, since the oil filter and fuel filters still need to be changed at 15,000 miles. But it did give me peace of mind that 15,000 mile intervals for oil changes on the Cummins 6.7 are not too long - at least in my case.
Hi Randy it’s so nice to see you working on the ram you need to flip it before you lose money on it you have the right idea buy a older car save money all the best from the UK
good one , from Joseph in Australia I drive a 1987 Toyota land cruiser hj75 diesel truck I do all my own work . i am 70yr s old and I saved so much money, I buy them for about 10,000 dollars and keep them going this one had it 30 years. parts getting hard to find so i picked up a donor car for parts.
As a long time subscriber we all know the way you keep choping & changing your personal vehicles, that you don't hold on to any vehicle for long, it's just the way you roll. ☘️
My truck is at 267000 and never had the EGR system touched. Haven’t had any issues so must be working ok. In fact my truck has never been to the dealer. Only issue has been turbo actuator, changed in my driveway. This has been the best truck I’ve ever owned. Also, buy all your filters right from the Cummins dealer. They are cheaper than Mopar.
I sold my 2019 diesel over 2 years ago, which was $760 a month, and bought a 2003 Duramax for 17k. Zero problems since I bought it 124k miles no Def saved me 8k a year in payments alone. The truck has already paid for itself in payment savings.
The only real issue with this gen Duramax are the injectors. Keep your eye on the oil and oil level as the diesel can go down into the crankcase when this problem presents… but otherwise it sounds like you’re winning.
Unless the 2003 Duramax was fitted with an aftermarket exhaust break, you have a lesser truck. Less HP, Less torque, possibly less towing capability. Of course you swapped that for less payments too. For me, the exhaust break is the winner. I can go down a 7& grade towing 11k lbs, set the cruise at 55 and hardly if ever have to touch the brakes. Exhaust brake magic.
My 2016 Ram 3500 is very expensive in maintenance. I do the fuel filters myself ($80) in parts. Oil changes I get done at Jiffy lube because it’s just a pain and messy. The dealer charged me about $1500 fir the EGR cleaning. My heater core went bad. That was $2800 including changing the AC evaporator because why not. The dash is already taken apart and it’s a $180 part. I go through tires every two years because the truck is so heavy, it just eats them up. I’ve tried Toyo, BFG and Michelin. I’m doing the egr myself next time thanks to this video.
You have poor maintenance my dad has an 18 we change the oil very 3k never had to clean the EGR oil effects the EGR if you change it at 10 or 15 it will get dirty have faster.
Bought my 2007.5 Ram 2500 from a Dodge dealer with 68K miles. Noticed the perform service message. Did some research learned of the 67.500 mile service. The dealer said I was SOL. So I did the service myself, cost about $200 in parts and 4 hours of my labor. Wasnt to bad of a job and everything is on top of the engine. On the earlier trucks its more involved sint the EGR cooler has to be cleaned too. Been 2 years and im at 82K miles now.
Hey Randy, I just wanna let you know that I watched your video for today about you make meetings your truck. You did a awesome job. I can’t wait to see the next video that you got coming up most likely tomorrow. Have a good day. Talk to you later.
I paid 100k for my 2021 ram 3500 with the black widow edition. It’s only got 41k miles on it and the service engine light comes on! The dealership wanted to charge me 85$ just for diagnostic check. I went to Autozone, within 5 minutes I found out what it was. Damn egr valve! For my engine that thing was 995$ thru Autozone. Can only imagine how much thru the dealership! So glad you made this video. I’m sure mine has even less build up than the one shown. Time to get busy under the hood. Ty for making this video. In my opinion dealerships are out there just to rip you off.
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds you are correct. I believe we also got the extended warranty. Cleaned out the egr valve but the service engine will not go away despite trying many times to reset it. Also disconnected both batteries for an hour and the light is still there. I don’t trust dealership mechanics but looks like I have no choice.
Great video and I'm sure it will help me somewhere down the road. I'm heading out tomorrow on an 800 mile road trip to buy a gently used 2008 Ram 3500 SLT 6.7 2 WD single rear wheel. I've been looking for a tow vehicle for our travel trailer for over a year now and this may finally be the best one. Dealership has been very helpful sending pics and videos. Said the last owner kept it in a garage and never towed with it.
Just fyi and you may have already found this out but the Fleetguard CCV filter can be purchased on Amazon for $60 at the time of writing this. I was going to do the same thing with buying it from the dealer but decided to shop around and am thankful I did!
i just bought and installed a genuine fleetguard crankcase ventilation filter and installed it. it took 20 minutes altogether and the ebay cost for the ccv filter was 30.00 including tax and shipping. the gaskets at napa are about 10-15.00.
And well-spoken and concise UA-cam video as I have learned a lot. I have been trying to do my homework for quite some time. Looking at the Dodge ram diesel trucks and I am looking to buy a used one but I wanted to learn as much as possible as I have never owned a diesel but wanted one because I am getting ready to also buy a camp trailer as my wife and I are both retired and want to do a lot of camping and traveling. Again thank you so much. Very good and well done video !
The maintenance schedule does NOT require the cleaning of the EGR and cooler. Instead of selling your truck it is good to do the maintenance yourself to save money. I’ve changed my leaking plastic Y coolant to aluminum, oil and fuel filter change, crankcase filter, and my turbo actuator myself. You still need to do the oil change on your differentials, transmission and filter, transfer case which the dealer did for me in an hour. They had a special for $1000 which still seemed high but didn’t want to mess with my Aisen transmission on my 2014 Ram 3500 4x4. I do still drive my 1996 Dodge 2500 as a daily driver with 389000 and California does NOT require smog testing pre 1997. I installed a 2013 seat which makes it very comfortable. I love the exhaust brake on my 4th gen for towing but try to drive my old faithful 12 valve which I still love that I bought new. I bought the Banks Ram intake and will try to do that myself and clean the EGR at that time. My friend lost his engine to the grid heater bolt failure at 120,000 miles. Beware! I did have to change the killer dowl pin on my 1996 12 valve so always something….
I just got took on what you're talking about .i went in for a check engine light . And they told me every little little issue they could find I just met the guy. He seemed to be a pretty good younger person With a fairly new Shop. I told 'em to do what he thought would be best for the truck .man the list went on and on 125 to take off a small grill 3 bolts 200 for a bg battery care witch is to small little pads under the clamps and yep the cv filter swap $646 fuel filters $ 376 $450 to hook up the ob2 scanner it's said shops do that to ppl .
Got into heated debate with dealer about that egr service....it's not recommended until after 120k. The ccv yes at 60k intervals. Pre 2012 models yes egr cleaning every 60k
My neighbor is a diesel mechanic for a city...he says as far as cleaning. The only thing you really need to do with a Cummins is clean the two, little ports in the egr valve with an appropriate size drill bit you just twist between you fingers. No need to clean the cooler...or the rest of the valve. For all the 'Hotshot Road Warriors' out there that say you have to pull all the time...that's not true. Thousands of ambulances and city trucks that only drive local and don't pull anything can't be wrong.
Hey Randy i have a 2001 Silverado Dmax diesel LB7 engine NO EGR NO DEF or CAT the only year that had 0 emissions love it has 300k and still runs like a champ!!!
Looks simple enough. Only have 13000 on my 2021. I did notice you were engaging the preheat when starting. If you push your start button twice, it will start with no preheat. I assume from your video you are not where I am (Alaska) although I do not engage preheat in summer. That under nut of the pre-heat cable connector is a huge killer of these motors. I plan on installing the Banks kit that will eliminate that bolt. It seems simple as most Banks stuff is designed DIY. Great video!
I could not agree with you more. I bought the same truck with 72000 on it and out about 6000 miles on it and got the same massage. Dealer told me that it would cost me $2500 and I only had it for 2 months. Thank for the video
Dealerships are pretty much a scam. I worked for a Ford dealership and the markups were ridiculous. That said, if it were me, I'd sell the truck and buy something for cash just to get out from under the payments. Of course, the truck is super nice and if I could afford the payments, I'd probably keep it. Isn't it amazing how much they charge for something you can do in less than a days time?
You should keep a or that heavy duty truck for pulling cars around and have an older truck, like the silver 3500 dodge dually in a previous walk around video, that you can make videos with by fixing it all up. I personally enjoy older vehicles, pre 2020, 2000-2010 vehicles most are easy & kinda fun to wrench on.
Thanks great video, I looked through the owner's manual under "Service Required" and only the CCV filter needs to be replaced and no mention of a EGR service.
Grate informative video Randy. I'm glad my 09 ram 3500 has none of that emissions crap on it no DEF or a $10,000 exhaust to deal with and with it being a 6 speed manual gets 20 mpg city
Randy I don't know if you looked it up or not but anyways the ccv filter is supposed to be replaced at right around the mileage you are at now and same with the egr valve cleaning the perform service message is supposed to come on right around 67,500 miles so this is normal maintenance I could be wrong but I did a quick google search and that's what came up but do understand why you were upset though about the cost.
Hi randy your extension for sockets is little wobbly . And I think that silver truck you showed in beginning of video looks good to replace the ram . And thanks for saving money for many people
I was at my local dealership last week I was planning to do a coolant flush. I bought the coolant no big deal easy cheapy but I asked for a thermostat that almost made me pass out $480 freaking dollars just because it says Cummins in it. Wowww. I still have chills.
My dad always taught me if the steering does not pull. Do not do a front end alignment. I'm surprised you paid them for an oil change. And a cabin filter? But honestly I don't know how complicated they've made. It become so awesome video. Thank you sir!
If he paid $150.00 for oil change at the dealership. It's a bargain. My daughter has her Toyota trucks serviced. Oil changes only. I do the regular services. Like brakes and rotors or shocks at my home.
Just to let you know. If you check your owner manual. You don't need to touch the egr valve for this service. You only need to swap out the ccv filter. The dealership was hostelling you services you don't need.
Great video. The problem here was not knowing the services on the vehicle being perchance. But the dealership should have said we are going to include this service when you reach this miles. Pues, you could have saved more by doing the oil change yourself.Great video keep making those to help other understand that they can do this anytime . 👍🏻👍🏻 Note always look for the parts in other places. Just ask the dealer parts department for the list of parts
Excellent intelligent information! I have 2004.5 H.O 3 gen Dodge Cummins. Smog exempt and the crank case filter only $50. I change mine every 50,000 miles. Thank for sharing.
Welcome to my road. Bought a 2010 Dodge 2500 6.7 in 2011. I owned it for 3 years and it ran just about perfect UNTIL it got to 100k miles. Then the AC condenser leaked and that cost $2300 to repair. About 6 weeks later, the main ECU went caput. Another 2500 down the drain. After that one I got rid of it
Diesels are NOT cheap! I’ve got a 2016 ecoDiesel….and early on, she was expensive as well. But the last few years, she’s been a good rig. Thanks for the education…. Also, the EPA requirements force dealers to follow the procedures. If they don’t it will effect their relationship with big brother!
Even if you bought an older Ram cash, what will you get for a trade in plus how much in negative equity for the 2021 Ram? That’s what I would consider first.
Well remember he's had probably what like four Rams in the last 2 years and he was completely upside down with the TRX because he had that other 2500 limited or cowboy edition or whatever they had the saddle leather in there that beautiful truck and Randy love that but he was paying so much for it then he got the TRX and what he owed on the saddle colored leather one 2500 or whatever it was got rolled into the new loan for the TRX and then the TRX I think he traded for what he has now so that all rolls over. And if you ever watch some of his older videos or you've been around a long time like me you should remember when you talked about how much he owed on a TRX and how upside down he was on it because of the other part of the loan rolling into it every time he swaps around. I love that 2500 with the saddle leather it was a beautiful truck and Randy loved it too I'm actually surprised he got rid of it. Also remember he had that ran big horn that he backed into the mailbox with or something and then he had that real loud color RAM that was real beefy looking so he's had quite a few Rams in the last few years
I’ve got a manual 5 speed 2005 dodge ram 2500 5.7 gas. This truck is awesome!! The only serious thing I’ve ever had to do on this truck is new clutch and a fuel pump. I change the oil myself and the plugs. It does have a leak in the exhaust manifold however but I’m not concerned with it because it’s never gotten any worse.
People always trade their vehicles in, just in time for major tune-ups, services, needing new tires, etc. Just so they don't have to pay the outrageous service bills, when service is due by mileage usually? Never really thought about the services due, being the reason the vehicle get the boot?
I hear you my dealer tried to charge me $600 on my car for my canister purge valve. But my mechanic who is also my husband’s family friend charged me $179 so guess where I am going lol. Just waiting to see if that solves my problem with having a rough start, rough idle
It's called Time and parts . You didnt get free labor at the shop. Remember if anything goes wrong. You take it back if any warranty applies vs no warranty for the shade tree guy. The 179.00 is about normal to pay for a shade tree job.
I have a 2018 ram 2500 that had that same service required message. There is nothing in the maintenance schedule to clean the EGR valve, only the change the ccv filter. The last year EGR cleaning was included in the maintenance schedule was 2012. The Dealer is ripping off the customer for $1300 of work not required.
“Anytime you can save XXX it’s a good day” you could have done it all, I get it, some don’t want to fool with oil changes and fuel filters but for what the dealer charges I’ll take an afternoon and do it myself. One thing people neglect to think about is dragging to truck to the dealer and then dragging back to get it when it’s done. My time is money. “Service engine” is for the filter only, cleaning EGR valve is a dealer “gotcha” it doesn’t need to be done. I have a 2020 RAM 3500 with 90,000 miles and have done all service myself (including both differentials, transfer case and trans) and I don’t have $4000 invested, total. Don’t buy anything from the dealer, they gouge DIY people (gots to get paid) the exact same crank case filter you paid $350 for I got for $78 (when I find a deal I buy 2, so I’m ready for next service) Buy only genuine OEM replacement, it’s not much more if you find deals on internet. Find a deal? Buy 2 or 3 that way you are not desperate next time (can anyone say “supply chain issues”? See that big beautiful dealership with everyone running around on golf carts? Yeah, the service department is a big cash cow to help pay for it. Think the dealer will care for your baby better than others? Wrong! Lots of dealers pay tech by what they get done and not by the hour so is advantageous for the tech to fly through jobs. I’ve known techs that make well over $100k per year. They will actually treat your vehicle worse if you don’t play into their higher profit services (everything listed in this video) I took my truck in for an issue (warranty) and when they couldn’t sucker me into $1500 in basic maintenance they called me 4 days later and said “it’s ready” They did nothing, nothing.
Oiy.. Genos Garage for the CCV filter. Filter and EGR gasket kit $183 or $115 for the filter. Replace every 30k miles or so. 440k miles and never have had to do my EGR. 2008 6.7.
Thanks for showing people how to do this procedure. A little more research would let you know that that perform device message will pop up about every 60k mile so that the crankcase ventilation filter will get changed. The dealer will rob you blind. I bought my 2020 Ram 3500 with 40k miles on it in April of 2022. I currently have just over 207,000 miles on it. I’ve changed that filter every time the message comes on. If you buy your own filters and do your own service, you will not spend near what the stealership will charge you. I’d say keep it. It will pay for itself if you have it as a work truck.
Even (some) fleets are agreeing with the assessment that modern diesel light duty trucks (technical definition includes most F450 and under) are more costly in the the total cost of ownership category. Our local utility did a 24 month head to head on service trucks and even EXCLUDING downtime for unexpected repairs. The costs per 100 K miles was 3% less for the identical gas equivalents. They had particularly scathing opinion in the back-up documentation from the fleet logistics manager regarding the diesel-burners unexpected down time % but they left it out of the official report in case it was brand/generation/model specific.
If you dont change the ccv filter it blows the seals , plural there , seals , its never just one , and the dealer either chrysler or cummins is the only ones with the correct size , the local parts stores have them , but they wont fit
I didn't think these newer trucks ever needed the EGR cleaned. Mine is a 2015 and it's never been cleaned. Owner's manual doesn't say anything about it having to be serviced.
I knew about all the “service” epa stuff. In 22 I ordered a 6.4 hemi 3500 dually. It does fine with a 16k trailer. Fuel mileage is actually not too bad
Also was told of a $1700,00 bill to service CV filter and EGR at dealer. Came home ordered filter on Amazon $28.00. EGR cleaned with simple green in half an hour. Money in pocket - $ 1655.00.
You didn't pocket anything. You only spent $28.00 period. Just like the guy who services their own vehicle. It's all on paper. The only money is parts and sweat you do or you tell your buddy to do. I've been a DYI mechanic for 40 years. I don't call a shop for labor prices and toot my horn saying a saved $$$$$$.. I prefer to smile and drive my vehicles that I can fix them in my driveway. That's the icing on my cake.
The CCV is $36 shipped from Amazon looks exactly like the one I pulled out, the EGR cleaning is simple unbolt clean and but back, just need new gaskets, all simple maintenance for the regular guy
That dealership knew it needed those services and I wouldn’t doubt the guy traded it in cause they hit him up for it too. They didn’t do it because of costs and sold knowing it would throw that code and you’d have to bring it back in for those services. Happens all the time anymore. Back in the day the dealers would go through a used vehicle and do any service before selling it. Not anymore
I remember way back yonder(like 3 years ago) when i had to change my maf sensor & clean the Egr Valve on my Jetta, the dealer wanted close to $400(mechanic rate + parts) did it myself under 2 hours & saved ALOT OF $
My EGR valve looks brand new. Only has 11 miles on it. When you keep emissions parts on a shelf, they last MUCH longer….
Bwahahahaha awesome!! At least you know where it belongs! Haha
@@sjfk1306 hey brother, good advice thank you for your input. I took mine on a fishing trip and lost it.
Thanks.
14ooo miles no oil change ? You can do most all mant. Just UA-cam it I been doing mine for three years. 👍
Poor engine….sucking in all that soot, what an after-thought the emissions are on this iconic engine. Stripping the life out of it.

There's no EGR filter. You are referring to the EGR cooler which really gets clogged up on pre-DEF cummins (pre 2013).
I think he probably meant DPF@@wtbman
@@wtbmanthe EGR cooler still get clogged has nothing to do with the def system

Those $27 filters, are a big mistake, but blame the chinese for splashing this critical component to your expensive motor.
Good job Randy. You saved a lot of money
This will help a lot of people

Problem I see is it voids the factory warranty. I'd love to do my own servicing but I still have 4 years warranty left on my 2020 Kia.
You might also want to check on the bolt that holds the heater grid in the intake manifold. They are known for coming loose and destroying the engine.
Good call! Banks has a cheap solution for that.
Goto GENO’s Garage on google. They have a document on how to check this.

I thought he said 1300.00
That's all labor cost.
Unfortunately, you only cleaned about 10% of the entire circuit!!!!!!!!!
Ive seen that one aftermarket filter works great
i think cummins doesnt include egr cleaning anymore on the newer trucks as a recommended service. they started in with the first 6.7s but some dealerships are probably looking to make more money and/or have not updated their service recommendations.
I bought a 06 3500 Cummins new. Still love it. It has none of that crap under the hood 👍💪🏻🇺🇸
Manufacturers and dealers operate in such a way that they try to make it impossible for you to do any maintenance on your vehicle without a headache for you the owner not to mention the rate they charge. Thanks for your videos.
Thanks again Randy. These videos are great for us, the consumer, to inform us on the hidden costs of owning these new vehicles
Thank you.
Great job Randy,I’m going to show the video to my brother as his 2500 Ram diesel has about 50,000 miles.
at around 65K miles he should be getting the same message. It will go into limp mode if not addressed.
I believe you missed a part of the egr system cleaning for the quoted $2000. I believe that price also includes cleaning the egr cooler which is much more in depth. Even at dealer prices 2k for those 2 services is robbery. I hope I am right.
They no longer recommend cleaning the cooler as part of this service so I did not miss it.
I understand that. What I was saying is that for the 2000 quoted I believe it covered all 3 items, the 2 you showed and the eve cooler cleaning.
As I was saying - the $2k does NOT include the cooler cleaning.
Wow, that’s insane!
Did it all on my 2013 and saved a ton. It drives like a dream.
Amen I do the same. I use t6 what do u use?
My dad changes the oil every 3k
@@dennisjd63I was a T6 user but recently swapped everything on the truck to amsoil.
Saw another video suggesting that at that mileage only the crankcase filter need to be done .no egr service

Definitely worth cleaning the EGR valve. Look at how clean it is now. Hope you did the other services yourself saving thousands.
What year is your truck ?

Nicely done my friend! You’ve helped lot of RAM owners save a ton of $$$ including myself. Keep up the good work.
Glad to help
Leave the receipts in the book as proof the service was done for the next owner. Great job.
I sold my 2019 diesel over 2 years ago, which was $760 a month, and bought a 2003 Duramax for 17k. Zero problems since I bought it 124k miles no Def saved me 8k a year in payments alone. The truck has already paid for itself in payment savings.
Don’t buy a new duracrap are you will be dealing more problems
Yeah but you are driving a 20 year old truck. My 2020 Ram 3500 will be paid off in 2 years and I’ll be driving a 5 year old truck
Must be at a dealer to let a greenhorn ..screw ya good truck up.....
Randy, I have yet to see a video of yours that I didn’t enjoy, and I watch all of them. Please keep doing what you’re doing my friend.
A 2021 with 41k is still under factory warranty. Why would you pay for it?
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds you are correct. I believe we also got the extended warranty. Cleaned out the egr valve but the service engine will not go away despite trying many times to reset it. You can always fix it! I wonder what the next work truck will be! Great video as always keep it up randy!!!!
Randy, you have beautiful cars for daily driving, you should buy that dually.
My CCV scared me but after I found out it was just a filter I knocked it out in about 20 mins so not bad and only 80 bucks for the filter
I think the main reason you want to do the CCV on time is it can cause oil leaks if it gets too plugged. When I did mine it was very heavy too.
First class video, can’t believe you filmed all this by yourself!
Not on 2019 and up ccv 75 k egr does not need to be cleaned on 2019 and up.

Hi randy your extension for sockets is little wobbly . And I think that silver truck you showed in beginning of video looks good to replace the ram . And thanks for saving money for many people
Cummins has stated that the ‘19 + EGR valve cannot be disassembled for cleaning. Only the CCV filter can be done for the 77.5 service
I was at my local dealership last week I was planning to do a coolant flush. I bought the coolant no big deal easy cheapy but I asked for a thermostat that almost made me pass out $480 freaking dollars just because it says Cummins in it. Wowww. I still have chills.
Great DIY video Randy. Saved yourself a lot of money. If i was you I’d buy a diesel with cash. Those payments are crazy! 😮
Hey Randy , good job ! Let’s do a valve lash adjustment now, you are half way there.

Thanks again Randy. These videos are great for us, the consumer. 😃😃😃
Your video was very helpful and informative one of the best DYI’s I’ve seen yet.

some don’t want to fool with oil changes and fuel filters but for what the dealer charges I’ll take an afternoon and do it myself.
Don’t buy anything from the dealer, they gouge DIY people (gots to get paid) the exact same crank case filter you paid $350 for I got for $78 (when I find a deal I buy 2, so I’m ready for next service)
Buy only genuine OEM replacement, it’s not much more if you find deals on internet.
Find a deal? Buy 2 or 3 that way you are not
desperate next time (can anyone say “supply chain issues”?
See that big beautiful dealership with everyone running around on golf carts? Yeah, the service department is a big cash cow to help pay for it. Think the dealer will care for your baby better than others?
Wrong! Lots of dealers pay tech by what they get done and not by the hour so is advantageous for the tech to fly through jobs. I’ve known techs that make well over $100k per year.
They will actually treat your vehicle worse if you don’t play into their higher profit services (everything listed in this video)
I took my truck in for an issue (warranty) and when they couldn’t sucker me into $1500 in basic maintenance they called me 4 days later and said “it’s ready”
They did nothing, nothing.
Banks power ram air intake horn. Veterans discount is 19% . While you have this apart do the boost tube also.
I knew about all the “service” epa stuff. In 22 I ordered a 6.4 hemi 3500 dually. It does fine with a 16k trailer. Fuel mileage is actually not too bad
CCV filters are due every 68,500 miles. Trucks are rock solid but as with every vehicle you must keep up with the maintenance
Randy, you don't work on cars remember. Yea right. You are on the right track my friend! Good job!! Saving money is the key to success.
Also the ccv filter on that year of truck requires replacement at 75.000 miles for the 2019 to 2023 models
Not anymore
Man the stealership got you. Fuel filters are easy DIY, that ccv filter is $115 at genos and the EGR cleaning cost probably included the cooler also
I remember way back yonder(like 3 years ago) when i had to change my maf sensor & clean the Egr Valve on my Jetta, the dealer wanted close to $400(mechanic rate + parts) did it myself under 2 hours & saved ALOT OF $
Do you still have the Mercedes S550
