To be fair even the original comics were heavy on the "queer" side of things. It was one of the first things that I remember reading having openly and addressed gay, androgynous/agengder/non-binary (Lucifer), trans and gender fluid characters and treated them like actual people and not all encompassing stereotypes or that that was the only facet of their characters that were focused on... It was just a part of the larger being of the persons/beings/anthropomorphic entity.
Yeah, it's funny to see people complain about the show being overly queer because the only one that was changed was the businessman in the diner. Even the waitress and the cook don't count; the orgy was a little more all-together there and the only change to the cook is that his relationship with her son is more consensual instead of a prison prostitution thing.

It's all the more ridiculous when you see how happy Neil is with the adaptation. The comics industry of back then had it's blind spots, and so did he, so they're trying more to cover those spots now. I have no doubt that if Gaiman decided to rewrite the sandman comics today, we'd see a lot of the same changes we see here.
In the comics Despair is more like a gross naked troll looking creature but tbh I actually like her being depicted as essentially a depressed, haggard lady who let go of herself and gave up.
Honestly that's pretty much my only big complaint I have about the adaptation, I didn't expect them to go full nasty naked ghoul, but her depiction in the show is just so "normal". Despair of the Endless in my opinion needs some bit of grandiosity to truly portray the embodiment of despair, and the show's version is just your average depressed person.

Rose was actually just a friend of Donna who was Judy's girlfriend. So there is a connection. Also hazel and foxglove who get important in later seasons were friends of Donna's. So its all very connected.

Yeah all the Collectors are just a guild of serial killers but they don't realize Corinthian is an actual nightmare or the existence of supernatural beings. They just consider him a legend aka copycat killer from the "Corinthian from years ago". But they're unaware that he's actually the same person
This episode is like a whodunit. We know there are 3 dreams/nightmares missing and we meet half a dozen weirdos in the house and three serial killers in the diner. Time to guess which of them are dreams/nightmares.
The Prodigal, who has been mentioned twice now, as most would have guessed is the 7th Endless sibling, who abandoned their duty willingly hence the play on "the prodigal son". Won't go any further on it for spoiler reasons, as chances are we'll see them in Season 2, which Neil Gaiman himself confirmed to be in production alredy.
It's super frustrating to see nobody else watching this show right now. Totally got side tracked by She Hulk and now House of the Dragon. So glad you're doing it!

im in roses place right now (have a little sister but my father wont let me see her) and i love how badass she is not only in her actions but in her conviction and hope. Its really inspiring and comforting to see a character who also feels really guilty about leaving their sibling in a shit situation fight for what's right. aswell as describing the situation in a very accurate way. Love rose, shes a dope af character and excited yall reacted to this ep

I think most other react channels wont get it really. Ive seen a few and they don't get it half the time. They are looking not watching. And by "don't get" not that they don't understand whats happening they don't understand the point. Sandman is by no means a complex show but the story telling from the novel is 10x more complex that your average netflix watcher youtber experiences nor understands.

I freaking love that they got Mark Hamill as Mervyn Pumpkinhead! As a man who grew up on late 90’s and early 00’s cartoons I knew literally the second when he finished his first sentence that it belonged to one of the greatest voice actors of all time. I do love that they made Rose and her family black because in the comics they are all white. However in the comics Rose’s mom is still alive and I don’t know why they killed her off. Also I still find the idea of a serial killer convention super creepy, but at the same time from a purely psychological perspective I would find it fascinating. And the fact that it’s implied that The Corinthian inspired the concept of serial killing is disturbing as well. Neil Gaiman you mad genius!!!!!
That’s why I love Mark Hamill. Merv’s voice is nowhere near Luke Skywalker, and it’s even quite removed from the Joker, but you just know it’s him. Since serial killers did already exist, I think the Corinthian had been inspiring them through dreams even when he was confined to The Dreaming. Since he escaped, he gave inspiration in the waking world as well, leading to a rising number of serial killers in the modern era.
It’s a shame they killed Miranda off, but it works as it allows them to integrate Lyta into the main story - her comic version wouldn’t have worked here, and makes her more active, which unlike the changes for Rose, actually work.

There are only 2 nightmares and 1 dream on the loose including the corinthian. Everything really does all connect and come back, not just in season one, but if we get more seasons to tell this whole story it all really does come together in the end. Also in the beginning of the episode Despair is the one in crocs and Desire is the one with the golden eyes, the two of them are twins.

Odd that Rose, when asked by the CPS woman if she was prepared to take care of her 12 year old brother by herself, didn't think to mention that it wouldn't be by herself because she and her brother have a living great grandmother who is filthy rich. In fact, I'd think that it would be legally required that they take the little boy out of the foster house and turn him over to his great grandmothers custody. Instead of asking for his location like some powerless beggar she and her great grandmother should make use of some of that family sugar money they have and get a court order for the kid to be turned over to her. This is pretty much the only part of the whole show that I consider to be bad writing that doesn't make sense.
A lot of people already filled in the important comics stuff, but just some small details you might have missed: Unity woke up 8 months ago-which is how long Dream has been free. I *believe* Lyta's husband died during the chaos John Dee caused in his 24 hours with the Ruby, but don't quote me on that, my memory's hazy. Also, it'll be more clear in a few episodes, but the reason Lyta sees her husband when she dreams is because he died while he was asleep, AKA in the Dreaming, basically extenuating circumstances caused by the way dreams are supposed to work being "broken" until Dream was full-power again.
I was that way at first, but the more I've watched it, it's grown on me, for me at least. But understandable that people didn't/don't like it, being such a tonal shift in the beginning, which was what threw me off being midseason.

Odd that Rose, when asked by the CPS woman if she was prepared to take care of her 12 year old brother by herself, didn't think to mention that it wouldn't be by herself because she and her brother have a living great grandmother who is filthy rich. In fact, I'd think that it would be legally required that they take the little boy out of the foster house and turn him over to his great grandmothers custody. Instead of asking for his location like some powerless beggar she and her great grandmother should make use of some of that family sugar money they have and get a court order for the kid to be turned over to her. This is pretty much the only part of the whole show that I consider to be bad writing that doesn't make sense.

A lot of people already filled in the important comics stuff, but just some small details you might have missed: Unity woke up 8 months ago-which is how long Dream has been free. I *believe* Lyta's husband died during the chaos John Dee caused in his 24 hours with the Ruby, but don't quote me on that, my memory's hazy. Also, it'll be more clear in a few episodes, but the reason Lyta sees her husband when she dreams is because he died while he was asleep, AKA in the Dreaming, basically extenuating circumstances caused by the way dreams are supposed to work being "broken" until Dream was full-power again.

The rose walker arc was my least favorite part of the show if I'm being honest not bad but didn't reel me in as much.
I was that way at first, but the more I've watched it, it's grown on me, for me at least. But understandable that people didn't/don't like it, being such a tonal shift in the beginning, which was what threw me off being midseason.
