One really cool thing about the Sandman comic is that you never knew when some minor character from a previous volume would suddenly become hugely important.
Gaiman said in an interview once that he would sometimes put a side-character or a reference to one in his works without much extra detail and, then, if he needed/wanted to tie an older bit of plot to a newer one he could take that earlier character reference and expand on it.

That’s not the same comparison. It would have to be Dolly Parton and another short, blonde, Southern woman like Kristin Chenoweth (despite the age difference). That’s a closer comparison and I’m sure people who don’t know either can easily make that mistake.

I freaking love that they got Mark Hamill as Mervyn Pumpkinhead! As a man who grew up on late 90’s and early 00’s cartoons I knew literally the second when he finished his first sentence that it belonged to one of the greatest voice actors of all time. Also I still find the idea of a serial killer convention super creepy, but at the same time from a purely psychological perspective I would find it fascinating. And the fact that it’s implied that The Corinthian inspired the concept of serial killing is disturbing as well. Neil Gaiman you mad genius!!!!!

Like you can do the same with your parents, your grandparents, your aunts and uncles but you wouldn't put them under the category of "friends", would you? There's no such thing as non-family events when you're spending time with your family.

Out of all of them she is the one I consider to be a friend also; if we weren’t related we would still be friends. When I spend time with my sister it’s time with my sister and friend it’s not a “family event”. That’s how I see it, if it’s different for you then that’s okay. Also it can be done with other relatives. There are parents who see themselves as their child’s friend. That’s not the relationship I have with my parents; I love my mom but she is the mother and I’m the child.

Also, also. Desire is nonbinary/genderfluid, played by a nonbinary actor. Their pronouns are they/them both in the show and in real life. They can shift to more masculine or more feminine but are generally truly androgynous.
This story arc has a few changes from the comics that I think work better in this version. Jed's foster parents are both really awful to him in the comics, whereas it's obvious that the foster mom in the show is absolutely terrified of making Barnaby angry so she just does what he says instead of fighting back. I also like Rose a LOT more in the show more than the comics. Some people had issues with her, but I think they vastly improved her personality, especially in upcoming events Also, also - I can't wait til they reveal who The Prodigal is. Watching the show again after reading the full story kinda gives a new perspective. It's fun watching you guys discuss theories to see how accurate you might be down the road haha
I bring you some easter eggs and changes from the comic to the series (Don't worry, none of them are spoilers, only plots that the series changes completely or are completly removed from the graphic novel): - Desire in the comic has nothing to do with I Dream of being trapped for a century, although it did have to do with whaever happen between Nada and Morpheus. - An interesting fact about Lyta Hall is that in the comics her full name is Hippolyta Trevor-Hall, daughter of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor, a superhero named Fury and a member of the team Infinity Inc., something like the Teen Titans or Young Justice for the Justice Society of America. -Her husband on the other hand is Hector Hall, son of Carter and Shiera Hall (Hawkman and Hawkgirl respectively) and a superhero named Silver Scarab who met and fell in love with Lyta on the same team, and died fighting with a villain. obviously to get away from the world of DC comics the stories of both characters changed drastically. - Rose's meeting with Unity is quite similar to the one in the comics, with the significant difference that instead of Lyta, Rose's mother is the one who accompanies her since she is still alive in the book. The change makes sense for the story since without both parents alive the difficulty of finding and connecting with Jed is greater.
A small correction or at least clarification: Desire never explicitly indicate that they were the result of Dream's imprisonment, I'm sure it can be implied that she had to do with the fact that they caught him and not Death the intended prey, but at least in the direct text from that conversation, the show makes it more literal.
As a Brit it took me a moment to realise why Aaron might not automatically know who Stephen Fry was! Over here he is pretty much a National Treasure, and the whole country will go in to mourning the day he dies! I adore Stephen and had such a huge smile on my face as soon as I heard his voice in this episode.
Destiny would be a book, Delirium (formerly Delight) would be the flower-thing, an the prodigal endless was named much later in the run, won't mention it here.

this episode adapts issue 10 and the majority of issue 11. This arc has significant changes made to it from the comic. In the comic it is mentioned that Desire goes uses "He", "She" and "it" as pronouns as "Desire has never been satisfied with just one sex". In modern terms they would be considered gender fluid, and they would likely replace "it" with "them". In the comics Despair has the appearance of a grotesque, naked overweight woman with pale grey looking skin. This has been significantly toned down in the show. In the comic Rose's mother is alive and is the one who goes to see Unity with her, not Lyta. Likewise due to the time frame difference Unity in the comics is Rose's Grandmother, rather than her Great Grandmother like in the show. Lyta is however still in the Sandman comic, but she is very different. In the comics Lyta is a pre existing DC character and her name is short for "Hippolyta". Pre crisis of infinite earths she was the daughter of earth 2 Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor. Following Crisis this was changed to her being the daughter of a golden age superhero called "Fury". Lyta herself would take this name as her superhero persona. Likewise her dead husband, Hector Hall, is the son of justice society members Hawkman and Hawkgirl and went by the superhero name "Silver Scarab". In the comics Hector Hall died when him and Lyta were a members of a superhero team called "Infinity Inc". Obviously all this isn't true in the show, with the start of this episode suggesting the DC superheroes are fictional in this universe since Jed has a shirt of Static direct from the Static Shock cartoon. In both the comic and the show the serial killers mention they initially wanted to get the Family Man to attend the convention but are unable to contact them, leading them to seek out the Corinthian instead. This is a reference to a villain from the Hellblazer comic. In Hellblazer the Family Man is shown to be a serial killer who is eventually killed by John Constantine in retaliation for the family man killing John's father. In the comics this arc is when Corinthian and Mathew are initially introduced to the sandman comic. With neither appearing in the previous arc. In the comics there are 4 Arcana missing not 3. The first Arcana mentioned to be missing in this episode "Gault" is original to the show but narratively replaces two of the comic missing Arcana "Brute and Golb" who were both pre existing characters who appeared in DC's first comic called "the sandman" in the 1970s which was written by Joe Simon and Pencilled by Jack Kirby.
The, human-level, concepts of gender don't really feel like they apply or could apply, really, to fundamental universe powers like an Endless. The human corollary is 'gender fluid' but, I think, it's an even more profound level of "changeable". Like, Desire exists in a sort of gender superposition, to borrow a bit of physics jargon. 🙂
Man, I would love it if Blind Wave reacted to episodes of QI. Would be a bit different to what they usually react to and I think they could have a fun time.

I just think that starlight look works far better than they seem to think. I also feel they could have made his coat or cloak (whichever he happens to be wearing) more ethereal when we first see him in a scene and perhaps as he departs. Holy shit! The old 'Top Gear' special challenges would make excellent reaction fodder! There's maybe 10 of them, one each year. They drive to the North Pole, cross the amazon, drive across Africa to find the scores of the nile river, cross Europe on 1 tank of fuel, race a Japanese bullet train across the island and many more! maybe its coz i don't know how the US foster system works, but i don't understand why Jed was put in foster care with some rando friend of the dad in the first place when he has an adult sister.
I think she had just turned 18 or wasn't when he was placed. So they're not going to place a minor with a minor. And if I'm mistaken the dad hid him from their mom and her until he died when Jedd was placed with his abusive friend.
This is another case of altering the characters so they are not DC heroes. Hector and Lyta in the comics are Hector and Lyta Hall the super heroes Fury (daughter of the Earth 2 Wonder Woman) and Silver Scarab/Sandman II (the son of Earth 2 Hawkman).
the actress playing Rose brought the second half of this series to a disney movie level and i didnt really like it. even the actress was cringing and covering her eyes when watching herself during the netflix interview with the whole cast. and yeah u could say she's one of those actors that dont enjoy seeing themselves in their work, but she had a huge completely different vibe as a person to her character, that maybe she developed after filmin, OR didnt know this was/would get AS big as it is/got. dunno. just didnt enjoy her character, cause of her portrayal.
So with the different objects representing the different Endless siblings, I assume the itmes correlate as follows. The Book: Destiny, as everything is written in stone, unchanging and unaffected by the actions of the characters within. The Ahnk: No fucking clue. The Medieval Doctor's Mask: Death. I mean, think about some of the greatest and most well knoen diseases and plagues across the planet. In most of them, the doctors wore that type of mask. Empty spot: Not sure, because there's nothing there. Mirror: I was actually thinking this would be for Despair. Maybe she's unhappy with her appearance and wants to look better? The Box: I'm unsure, but it kind of looks like a makeup box maybe? Which if true, fits Desire fairly well. The... Transforming Object: I initially thought this would work for Desire, as it could change to represent the ever changing wants and desires of Desire. But then I thought it also works for Dream because it can be anything. Edit: If the box is a jewelry box, then it still works well for Desire.

The brother Destruction has not been seen since he renounced his job. He’s an artist by nature but his power is destruction so he left to wander all of creation with his talking dog. We haven’t met Destiny, Destruction or Delirium, whose name used to be Delight but something changed and she’s quite mad now. Delirium helps Desire and Despair with their plots but she doesn’t know they mean Dream harm.
If you're gonna have someone sing a full song, the performance either needs to be amazing or really short. Otherwise just have it in the background while characters are talking.

A small correction or at least clarification: Desire never explicitly indicate that they were the result of Dream's imprisonment, I'm sure it can be implied that she had to do with the fact that they caught him and not Death the intended prey, but at least in the direct text from that conversation, the show makes it more literal.

As a Brit it took me a moment to realise why Aaron might not automatically know who Stephen Fry was! Over here he is pretty much a National Treasure, and the whole country will go in to mourning the day he dies! I adore Stephen and had such a huge smile on my face as soon as I heard his voice in this episode.

this episode adapts issue 10 and the majority of issue 11. This arc has significant changes made to it from the comic.
In the comic it is mentioned that Desire goes uses "He", "She" and "it" as pronouns as "Desire has never been satisfied with just one sex". In modern terms they would be considered gender fluid, and they would likely replace "it" with "them".
In the comics Despair has the appearance of a grotesque, naked overweight woman with pale grey looking skin. This has been significantly toned down in the show.
In the comic Rose's mother is alive and is the one who goes to see Unity with her, not Lyta. Likewise due to the time frame difference Unity in the comics is Rose's Grandmother, rather than her Great Grandmother like in the show. Lyta is however still in the Sandman comic, but she is very different. In the comics Lyta is a pre existing DC character and her name is short for "Hippolyta". Pre crisis of infinite earths she was the daughter of earth 2 Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor. Following Crisis this was changed to her being the daughter of a golden age superhero called "Fury". Lyta herself would take this name as her superhero persona. Likewise her dead husband, Hector Hall, is the son of justice society members Hawkman and Hawkgirl and went by the superhero name "Silver Scarab". In the comics Hector Hall died when him and Lyta were a members of a superhero team called "Infinity Inc". Obviously all this isn't true in the show, with the start of this episode suggesting the DC superheroes are fictional in this universe since Jed has a shirt of Static direct from the Static Shock cartoon.
In both the comic and the show the serial killers mention they initially wanted to get the Family Man to attend the convention but are unable to contact them, leading them to seek out the Corinthian instead. This is a reference to a villain from the Hellblazer comic. In Hellblazer the Family Man is shown to be a serial killer who is eventually killed by John Constantine in retaliation for the family man killing John's father.
In the comics this arc is when Corinthian and Mathew are initially introduced to the sandman comic. With neither appearing in the previous arc.
In the comics there are 4 Arcana missing not 3. The first Arcana mentioned to be missing in this episode "Gault" is original to the show but narratively replaces two of the comic missing Arcana "Brute and Golb" who were both pre existing characters who appeared in DC's first comic called "the sandman" in the 1970s which was written by Joe Simon and Pencilled by Jack Kirby.
The, human-level, concepts of gender don't really feel like they apply or could apply, really, to fundamental universe powers like an Endless.
The human corollary is 'gender fluid' but, I think, it's an even more profound level of "changeable".
Like, Desire exists in a sort of gender superposition, to borrow a bit of physics jargon. 🙂

I think she had just turned 18 or wasn't when he was placed. So they're not going to place a minor with a minor. And if I'm mistaken the dad hid him from their mom and her until he died when Jedd was placed with his abusive friend.

This is another case of altering the characters so they are not DC heroes. Hector and Lyta in the comics are Hector and Lyta Hall the super heroes Fury (daughter of the Earth 2 Wonder Woman) and Silver Scarab/Sandman II (the son of Earth 2 Hawkman).

the actress playing Rose brought the second half of this series to a disney movie level and i didnt really like it. even the actress was cringing and covering her eyes when watching herself during the netflix interview with the whole cast. and yeah u could say she's one of those actors that dont enjoy seeing themselves in their work, but she had a huge completely different vibe as a person to her character, that maybe she developed after filmin, OR didnt know this was/would get AS big as it is/got. dunno. just didnt enjoy her character, cause of her portrayal.

So with the different objects representing the different Endless siblings, I assume the itmes correlate as follows.
The Book: Destiny, as everything is written in stone, unchanging and unaffected by the actions of the characters within.
The Ahnk: No fucking clue.
The Medieval Doctor's Mask: Death. I mean, think about some of the greatest and most well knoen diseases and plagues across the planet. In most of them, the doctors wore that type of mask.
Empty spot: Not sure, because there's nothing there.
Mirror: I was actually thinking this would be for Despair. Maybe she's unhappy with her appearance and wants to look better?
The Box: I'm unsure, but it kind of looks like a makeup box maybe? Which if true, fits Desire fairly well.
The... Transforming Object: I initially thought this would work for Desire, as it could change to represent the ever changing wants and desires of Desire. But then I thought it also works for Dream because it can be anything.
Edit: If the box is a jewelry box, then it still works well for Desire.
Death literally wears an Ahnk around her neck and I believe its going in order of their birth.

Edit: But the Ahnk does work for Death. Anubis is seen holding it a lot in different hieroglyphics, and, well, Anubis is the God of death. One of them, anyway.

The brother Destruction has not been seen since he renounced his job. He’s an artist by nature but his power is destruction so he left to wander all of creation with his talking dog. We haven’t met Destiny, Destruction or Delirium, whose name used to be Delight but something changed and she’s quite mad now. Delirium helps Desire and Despair with their plots but she doesn’t know they mean Dream harm.

I think it's pretty cool, because it's terrifying. Crazy sick tend to sniff each other out, so it's probable.
If you're gonna have someone sing a full song, the performance either needs to be amazing or really short. Otherwise just have it in the background while characters are talking.
