I bought a TC Nova delay years ago, which was based on this! And I love it. When I came in to some money I was like " I have to get the Strymon timeline" so I did. And it's a great delay with all you need. But, it doesn't sound better than my Nova delay. To the point that, someone was selling one in the box for 100 bucks a year ago so I bought it and put it on my acoustic board and my Strymon is just for home use now! TC are awesome, really underrated company!
I love my nova delay. I don't feel any need to replace it, especially as nothing has the same features for a reasonable price. I might buy a 2290 pedal one day
I own a fully maxed out TC2290 that I bought new many years ago and it has never been out of the same room/studio. A few times I almost had a momentary lapse of reason and thought about selling it. Never did…there’s few pieces of gear I have come across that makes everything sound better.
Great playing and video Pete! Thanks for demonstrating clean tones with the 2290. It definitely makes it easier to hear the nuances of what the delay line and surrounding modulation effects are doing more easily, and you've done the direct comparison to the rack unit better than anyone else has, so far. I own two original 2290 rack units and they are a main part of my guitar sound. I also have two of the new 2290 P pedals, and I think they are 95 - 97% accurate to the rack units, which is as close as any company could ever get, considering that digital modeling is being implemented to re-create the sound of much analog circuitry in the case of the 2290. The 2290 rack units are 90% analog circuitry from the front to back ends of the signal path through the units. The analog opamp based preamp and analog feedback path for the digital delay line are paramount ingredients of the signature sound of the 2290, and tc electronic engineering team in Denmark lead by Asger Lundsgaard Hansen did a remarkable job of recreating all of it. There's a high frequency emphasis in the analog preamp of the original rack units that adds about a 3dB rise around 12kHz, which is what gives the delay repeats their bright and crystalline shimmery tone. tc electronic were able to reproduce this behavior about perfectly in the 2290 P. What I love most about the 2290 P is it's ability to integrate with my other pedals. Try putting a Strymon Volante in front of it... pure heaven! The pedal version is a lot more flexible in terms of integration with other stereo pedals, due to it's stereo inputs! The rack unit has only a mono input, so having stereo inputs on a 2290 now is also a huge advantage. We are in a new era now where a lot more people's guitar rigs are stereo, especially with true stereo amp simulation pedals like the Strymon Iridium, UA Dream/Ruby/Woodrow, and many others in that stereo amp-in-a-box form factor. I can now run a stereo amp modeler pedal into a real stereo 2290 without losing the stereo imaging of any stereo pedal effects that are positioned before the stereo amp modeler pedal. It also means that I don't need a Bob Bradshaw rack system to get a studio quality signal path with effects in stereo, using simple pedals and patch chords. No patching system necessary, with this level of flexibility. With a tc electronic 2290 P, an Eventide H90 and something like the Strymon Volante to cover magnetic echo, we now have a rig more powerful than the refrigerator [H3000/2290/PCM70] industry standard Bradshaw rack of previous era, but also one that will fit on a Pedaltrain Nano in the overhead bin on a commercial flight for people like myself who need to travel for work.
Holy Hell , Pete !! That is an Amazing piece of Music you composed for this Delay Unit !! And that's another perfect example of why you're my Favorite Guitarist on the Planet ! Your Skills are Amazing . I truly wish that you would break down some of the more complicated parts of this piece and show exactly what you're doing . But anyway , this will be my next Delay Unit as soon as I can afford it . I hope everything is going great with you and you're staying safe . 🎸
I had the 2290 rack maxed ver. and sold it when I bought an AxeFX 2…..big mistake. I bought the pedal and super happy. With all the technology we have now it is easier to replace the older gear like Boss did with the SDE3000 EVH, Eventide with the 9 series pedals etc. I’d like to see a TC 1210 spacial pedal and maybe the parametric eq in pedals. Seems like good timing for the old rack gear to be refreshed and brought back to the masses. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 Thanks for another amazing review vid… I enjoyed watching even though I already had it. Keep Rock’n Pete🤘🏻
Another banger, Pete! Gonna channel my inner Edge. By the way, thanks for telling us the other day, that you wished you had told Chris that you wanted to write with him. Reminds me to remember to chase my dreams. He would have loved the music you are creating!
One of my Achilles Heels on guitar is I have no natural ability to play "against" an echo to get a rhythm going, like Pete does here for the bed track. My brain tries (and succeeds!) to make me play right in time with the echo. I've gotta work on that!! lol This delay is a beast! Sounds fantastic! I wasn't really familiar with the TC 2290 either, even though I had TC pedals back in the day. .
A 2290 has always been my #1 dream piece of gear, and I am losing my mind over this pedal right now. If ever there was a signal processor worthy of the "legendary" designation, it is the 2290.
HA! That's funny Pete, I had the older version of the Digitech DSP128! (blackface) I sold it when I got the H3000 in 1988. On that program 33, it's panning both the direct and delayed signal with the modulation in the delay side. That's why there's so much movement. This is in my humble opinion, is the best of the digital delays that ever came out in the 80s. I'm glad TC Electronic did this in a pedal. ...Now if they would just reissue the 1210 in a pedal or even in rack form, I'll be first in line to get one!
@@Robstafarian I have that pedal too. It's a great combination with the SCF in front, the SCF also does a great stereo wide image. That's what I'll be using it for when I get the next 2290P. I'll use one 2290 for the chorus/flange effects and feed that into the second one for the delays. That should be a glorious combination.
You too, me too (in a good way). @ 2:28 The Digitech 128 was a great budget unit. I used one together with two Midiverb II units on my early, Atari based, studio setup. Low budget high tech of the day😎 It’s nice to finally be able to afford the unobtainable units of the past. @ 8:40 Instant Purple Rain! Great stuff, well presented. As usual. ✌✌
So I'm listening with headphones because it's very late/early and this pedal seems to have what I have always chased - 3D. In about 1978, in a music store (remember those?) the store guy had a Roland JC-120 with a Space Echo tape unit. He handed me the guitar and said, "just hit a C chord." Fortunately one of the 4 or 5 chords i knew at the time. But it was stunning. And I never forgot it. Could not afford/justify gear like that of course. Nowadays, you can get some great sounds relatively easily and cheaply, but this unit seems to have the elusive quality. Thanks for breaking it down and getting to the essentials of it Pete. It seems very tweakable in an intuitive way, which is very cool. I like it a lot.
Thanks for putting this together for everybody people that trust your dedication to tone and the variations you can get with a lot of this equipment I like doing the same but I get stuck on like just a couple of perfect sounds but I need to throwing some more influence some of these modulating sounds that have these really. Iridescent qualities and I got stuff to do that so I just had to throw one of those in my regular mix to have a little bit more enhancement and maybe come up with something really beautiful and melodically interesting it is always good to listen to you and scoping out all these variations of sound and tone
Listening to this demo all I can think of are the sounds of 80-ies. You just understand on how many records from that time period you have had this sounds. Sure it's first delay effect but to my ears it's chorus first. Definitely modulation effect. Delay just comes as nice supplement to the tone you get. Pretty much poster child of the digital delays of back then. No tone roll off just pristine but modulated repeats. We often forget how gear "limitation" was shaping music in a way that great musician's were working around it and finding a way to make art with gear on hands. It took some some until delays could do long delays. Though people found the way to use what they had in great manner. As always it's fascinating that Pete makes practically a real song for every demo and incorporate best use of the peace of equipment that he demos. No reusing of the same phrases over and over again. Epic stuff.
Great review and instructions/examples/comparisons! I just love TC for what they did to the fantastic 80s music, and players like Luke, Landau, Huff and Pierce just used them in such a classic way…it’s just burned in my brain now. So glad they’ve made this. Stellar company and - again - presentation, Pete!
Yeah and you're getting that really cool chorus affect of course I am not listening to this in stereo but I can understand what you're talking about how the one side has a dry tone and the other has the modulation effect panning so it draws the sound into a atmosphere
Nice. Shockingly nice. I love how people doubt these brands (behringer/tc electronics). These companies are more “for the artist” than most companies. They understand affordability. They understand their market. Starving artists, lol. Patents have expired… the brand names need to wake up and realize other companies can now replicate their products at a much cheaper cost and at times make major improvements. I dont need a gucci hand bag to look good… i always look good.
Great demo, as always. I’ve been loving this pedal. Picked it up right at release and have been using it for guitar, synth, and even as an effects insert when mixing. Absolutely fabulous unit.
Back in the late'80 I had a Digitech DSP 256. It was fun. My wife at time got mad at me. She didn't know I was using headphones most of time to check it out.
What a tasty delay lines on the first lead guitar. Getting a bit of a pink Floyd vibe aswell at the end of your phrases. Something Gilmour is famed for, just adding that extra sauce. Great review Pete and it sounds like you just keep improving
After the BOSS SDE-3000EVH Dual Digital Delay pedal came out last tear, I did my homework and scored three #HolyGrail 1980s Digital Delay Rack Units. The more buttons and LED displays the better!!! Roland SDE-3000A (Same Delay Chip is in the BOSS DD-2/3 Digital Delay Pedal) TC Electronics 2290 KORG SDD-3000 (Yes they had a pedal version too) Then BOOM TC Electronics releases the TC 2290P pedal. BONUS: BOSS released the RE-202 Space Echo Pedal in 2023 Too!!! It is based on the Legendary Roland Space Echo Unit.
10 secondes max delay for the 2290p is too short for those like me who are into expementations. The original 2290 could be upgraded. Wish this pedal can get an update to double the delay time by reducing the bitrate by 2 for example! Or even reducing the bitrate by 4! Thu's having 40 sec of delay! Please please please TC!😊 Or even make it into a mono delay of 20 secondes! I will buy two more pedals if you can do that!
Pure Awesomeness Pete 🤟🎶That modulated sound is much like "Purple Rain" and makes me wonder if Prince used that and not chorus!? Hmm... and yes if you had one "back in the day" you were either a studio owner or a session player/touring musician as they were expensive!! I had a Digitech PDS 1002 which was amazing for its time, no pun intended LOL
Great video. Watched Coldplay at Rock Palast last night AGAIN. Jonny Bucklands Line 6 Delay sounds amazing. I should have kept the one I had after doing all the repairs to it. Delay is great buty the hold feature on the Line 6 is so good in the right hands.
Still my all time favorite. I love the pedal as well, to me it doesn't sound quite the same as my 2 rack units - the repeats are very close, but the modulation always seems a bit richer on the originals. Still totally worth it though, especially with how expensive the OG units have gotten.
Listening on the Galaxy Fold (which has Stereo speakers), the pedal vs rack is discernable. The phase thing (in both units) pops pretty notably in these Fold speakers for some reason. Interesting.
I thought I was hearing the pedal gating the repeats in the pedal v rack comparison, but upon replay, I noticed you had muted the gtr. In the "rack" take, the overtones sorta rumble through and sound huge. But with a few more replays, and some mental interpolation, I'm happy to opine that the pedal would sound precisely the same as the unmuted passage. (Not a complaint btw! Making demos, editing, precise performances for a tough audience: you succeed in spades as they say.)
Yeah I didn't have an HD 3000 because they were going for about 5,000 add this TC one also I never had didn't really know too much about this one but anyway awesome to get into some explanation of this unit
One important reason for using the rack model in the ninetys was the 5 effektloops on the back. They could be used for ekstra pedals that you switched on/off with presets, but you also used them for channel swithcing on the Mesa Boogie pre-amps. The floor controller was also great,, not to mention all the blinking lights :D I really miss mine!
Brilliant per usual, Pete! Serious question about your songwriting - your chord progressions are always fresh and magical sounding. Are you using theory to come up with these or do you start playing a chord and just hearing what should come next? I'm really trying to be able to develop nice progressions and feeling stuck. Thanks for any input you can give!
DigiTech leader pretty cool something similar to this if not its predecessor or processor equivalent but it was a purple DigiTech multi processor I think it was kind of in the late 90s it would be cool if you can scope out one of those but whatever
Isn't it funny how many manufacturers are latching on to what Behringer has been doing lately.... releasing modern (and cheaper) versions of classics from their past stable of legendary fx/synths? Love the price point.. love the sounds! That solo at the beginning... put it on your next album, don't change a thing!! Nuf Said.
Pete your videos are always amazing and you really explain the gear good, i noticed Eddie Van Halen always had one in his studio and it was always on 1023 delay time or 102.3 how did he use it setup wise, cause i always knew he ran two dmx 15’s one at 21 n other at 28.
i hate TC - just when i thought i was done buying delays having the Flashback, they have to keep making such damn good delay pedals. Nice demo Pete. THnx
Jesis H Kerrist, finally someone who understands that people buy a delay for getting killer '80's lead sounds a la Lukather! Not to get some half assed Police or U2 type of sounds....
Yeah I'm trying to play kind of the old John Petrucci but not like him but just with his ideas for all kind of songs that's kind of a tricky or tricky thing to learn because you're using major chords mixed with minor chords mixed with Triads mixed with sus chords mixed with 7/9 and 13 etc etc and making them all blend into a composition that has substance and guts to it but running in between melodic sounds that have classical variations but always coming back to the beat but subjecting everything that combines into a composition yeah it's really the epitome of musical aptitude
I'm on headphones and in the comparison I don't think they sound exactly the same at all. The pedal trails are a lot more dirty than the rack. The rack sounds very clean in the repeats!
Would comparing it to the Boss SDE-3000 be an apples to oranges comparison as far as delays go, modulation seems to be the centerpiece of this delay unit. Sounds killer
Well they do different things really. The SDE has the 2 separate delay engines, this one's more about one delay but with panning and splitting/mixing options that are unique
Hi @@PeteThorn, I just bought the Boss SDE-3000EVH after watching your videos about it and I'm very happy with it. Right now just enjoying the out of the box EVH presets which are fantastic. I really enjoy watching your videos. Any plans to tour in Australia soon? Cheers.
The difference between no headphones and headphones listening to this demo is night and day. You need headphones to listen to it! Sounds big and full!
I'm happy with studio monitors.
@@coldacre More happy with my Klipsch the Fives, perfect PC speakers
I mean mono phone speaker Vs headphones 🎧 🤓
My s24 ultra pans hard left and right outta top and bottom speakers. If I lay on my back with the phone over my face, it's almost like headphones.
I can’t think of another YT’er that works as hard as you on demos. It’s always a pleasure to listen to your demo vids!

But with a few more replays, and some mental interpolation, I'm happy to opine that the pedal would sound precisely the same as the unmuted passage. (Not a complaint btw! Making demos, editing, precise performances for a tough audience: you succeed in spades as they say.)
I demand you headline an annual show called Suhrfest at the Lake Elsinore Storm stadium but only in the cooler months!
Yeah I didn't have an HD 3000 because they were going for about 5,000 add this TC one also I never had didn't really know too much about this one but anyway awesome to get into some explanation of this unit
Oh they have it in a pedal awesome
One important reason for using the rack model in the ninetys was the 5 effektloops on the back.
They could be used for ekstra pedals that you switched on/off with presets, but you also used them for channel swithcing on the Mesa Boogie pre-amps.
The floor controller was also great,, not to mention all the blinking lights :D
I really miss mine!
And of course it had midi, so all other rack units also changed presets by midi program change
That was some really great arena style rock! Full on concert music and sounds. As always..
Thanks!

You’re very welcome!
Sei magicooooooo Pete numero uno hai le mani doro 🙏🙏🙏
My favourite Rack Effekt in my "Refrigerator" Times. (well, beneath PCM70 and the Roland Dimension D)
Yes seems like it would be kind of fun to mess around with this and you know digging out some interesting quantum soundscapes
Can’t wait to hear this pedal! I hope it’s as great as the rack unit once was? That’s a sentence!
Lovin the camera placement, if you have a large monitor its like sitting beside you.
Wow! You're pretty good playing a delay!
I love my old original 2290
When you first came in with the lead guitar it sounded like david gilmour on terminal frost from momentary lapse of reason. Sounds killer.
Those units were just awsome.
TC Ec are the og masters of mod and echo.
Sounds awesome! Great demo! Cheers!
came for the Pete intro, and ended up learning a truck load
Really needed to open with "Purple Rain" with that sound! 😢
Sounds great. Wonder how the Flashback compares?
I've never heard the phrase "big football chords".
But I'm gonna use it.
I will listen to this demo again with headphones... without them I didn't get ANY repeats at all
Do you have any idea how sick your intro sounded on my monitors in stereo? I guess you do dayum!
Love it - thanks Pete!
How do you think this compares to the Boss SDE 3000 EVH pedal? Which would you put on your board if you had to choose one?
Sounds really really good!
May I ask Pete what model single cut quilted top you use in this video sir? Great video as always!
Nuf Said.
Looks like a flux compensator controller. Definitely need one of these 😂
It always amazes me when I see these and put the monitor in mono that the delay completely is gone. Try it!
Pete your videos are always amazing and you really explain the gear good, i noticed Eddie Van Halen always had one in his studio and it was always on 1023 delay time or 102.3 how did he use it setup wise, cause i always knew he ran two dmx 15’s one at 21 n other at 28.
This ROCKS!!!!!!!! 🎧
Hey pete
Just curious do you ever get videos sent to you of dudes playing? Is it annoying if so?
i hate TC - just when i thought i was done buying delays having the Flashback, they have to keep making such damn good delay pedals. Nice demo Pete. THnx
How does this compare to a Chandler Digital Echo rack unit from the 90s?
This sounds huge… but it IS huge! How’s about an updated Nova Delay?
I have the plugin and love it 😍
I always wanted one (the original ) back in the day, but it seemed a bit overkill for me.
I'm on headphones and in the comparison I don't think they sound exactly the same at all. The pedal trails are a lot more dirty than the rack. The rack sounds very clean in the repeats!
Cool effect.
I wonder if Dallas Shoo seen this
Would comparing it to the Boss SDE-3000 be an apples to oranges comparison as far as delays go, modulation seems to be the centerpiece of this delay unit.
Cheers.
1 amp or 2 and effects loop or front of amp? Thanks!
The sound of floating 😁
The best parts are when you stop playing and just kinda smile while listening to the fadeout... lol Nothing needs to be said at that point. 😎
