    "Its made me fall in love with music making all over again" .....I have a deluge and I could not agree more it revitalized me after years of basically having my gear gather dust and after owning this gem for going on 2 years now I can say the initial effect it gave me hasnt faded...I mainly use it as something to try out ideas on its a fantastic little musical sketch pad.

      I’m having a crisis right now lol. For so long the OP 1 has been my favorite “one box to rule them all”, but I have to admit I’m finding the Deluge to be one of the most fully featured and fun boxes I’ve laid my greedy hands on. Thanks for watching bro, keep rocking that colored box of lights!

      at one point i was debating between these two as well, but in the end the Deluge just made sense to me. The OP-1 while maybe cooler looking seemed more like alchemy, you have to know it's arcane secrets to get it to perform, while the Deluge just takes your hand calmly and drags you down the rabbit hole! :)

    • @itsahsah

      It's a good thing you got the deluge. I have both, and can say without a doubt the Deluge is superior for overall control. The OP-1 although awesome in what it does, kind of makes you fall in love with it because it's so challenging to initially get what you want out of it. Learning it's limitations can breed all sorts of creativity, but if you are capable of limiting yourself and want to have more control in terms of waves, quantization, loops, full arrangements, multi sampling, and more, the Deluge does everything the OP-1 does, and has a maker who continues to innovate the product by renewing it's use with more capabilities.

    When I first got my Deluge I loved it. I had multiple young children and being able to move my music writing to another room was the best thing that ever. Then I went through a phase where I kept wishing that it had better “something” like better effects, better time stretch, etc. Eventually I put it away for a while due to those frustrations. I came from an in the box setup so I just wasn’t used to working within the hardware limitations world. Eventually I figured out that the deluge did some things really well and I just needed a couple of pieces to compliment it. Also needed to dig in to figure out the synth engine more. I’m back to loving it again. Anyway sorry for the book. The Deluge is great and I love this channel. Thanks for the content.

      Dude, I read every comment and love learning other people’s experiences with music and gear, so any time you want to talk just type away. I had a similar experience with the OP 1 and actually ended up selling it the first time. I eventually missed it too much and got it back again, and now I try to look at it for what it has instead of what it doesn’t. I think we all have these “realizations” eventually, maybe it’s just part of the growing pains in this awesome passion we share. Anyway, thanks for the kind words and hope to hear from you again, cheers!

      Hydra is the king of sound design. Did you ever get a chance to hook up your Hydra with your Deluge? Seems like endless possibilities.
      Also, how did you find the Deluge as a standalone composition tool. I'm going on tour for a month or so with my band later in the year and want to have a groovebox to write on in the van. Is the Deluge a good shout?

    • @blindianajones
      @blindianajones 3 роки тому

      @@gregarmstrong2500 The Deluge is great as a sequencer with other gear. At the time I had the Deluge, I also tried a Polyend Seq. The Deluge was much easier/faster to setup sequences than the Seq. Want to preface my next opinion with I never hooked up my Deluge to a PA or large sound system. That said, I found the sounds to be just ok on the Deluge...kind of thin and lacking nuances. To be fair, every sound on the synth is single cycle or sample, so it is what it is? I did enjoy taking the Deluge on a two month trip to sketch ideas. The manual is really good. The folks at Synthstrom are responsive and helpful. The grid/button controls take time to build up muscle memory.

    Congrats! The Deluge totally changed the game for me. I feel like it just pulls tracks out of me. Although wishing for things it doesn't have is somewhat pointless the biggest limitation I see in it is that you cannot record separated tracks, just the summed stereo signal. If you are using it as a control hub for other gear this is a moot point, but MAN I wish it had at least some assignable group outs or at least the ability to record separated WAVs internally. On the other hand, limitations foster creativity and only having a stereo output forces some real decision making in the moment, in that regard I finish stuff way faster because I can't overthink it after the fact.

    There's so much discussion about the import tax on a Deluge, it's ridiculous. It's true that if Synthstrom let someone import these en masse (which I don't think they even have the capacity for), then 'maybe' they'd be a little less expensive. But as you know, everyone pays import taxes, so in the end they'll be passed on to the customer in the price. The thing that's important is that when you have your instrument, you're happy with it.
    Actually, when you look at some other music making gear in the same category, you realise it's just as expensive. Electrons are either 729€ for a Digitone, 700€ for a Digitakt, or an Octatrak at ... 1,300€ - and you're limited to 16 tracks. Akai's new MCPs range from 680€ for the standard model to 1000€ for the live model. So, as one can see the list could go on, but in the end you buy the instrument that suits you.
    Lastly, I suspect that the expense myth comes from the type of people using the Deluge, and since it's almost idiot proof, then there's a large range of people buying these. The main difference (I've noticed) is that machines such as the Digitakt range, need to be understood and learnt to make any real music. Whereas the Deluge has found itself in people's homes who don't intend to make music for a living, and certainly have no intention of spending hours browsing a manual (such as the powerful Octatrak's), they just want to hit buttons to make music/sound. For those people, it's an expensive luxury or toy.
    Sorry for the long comment (or is it a rant ;-), but I thought it worth saying.

    Okeydoke, so I've had a Deluge for a few years and juuuust got an OP-1 today. I'm pretty sure I'd sell the OP-1 before the Deluge but one thing about he OP-1 that I've noticed is that the destructive editing/recording mode really has me planning out how a track will sound, whereas on the Deluge I usually can mess around with the parts and stitch everything together, easily make variations on parts, etc. This is in generally great for building a song as you would on the DAW, but the riskiness of composing on the Deluge has a certain charm as well (also bouncing audio from the Deluge to the OP-1 to overcome the lackluster timestretching is kinda neat). Good thoughts overall!

      :D Here's hoping for longer videos of this type in the future, they're far to enjoyable to be so short.

      @@MidlifeSynthesist I also have OP1, OP-Z and lots of other grooveboxes, kinda addicted :) But the problem for me is that many of them have this kind of on board synth sounds that... how to put it... it's really great to jam on them and make music on them. But in reality i wouldn't listen to music from the radio or Spotify that sounds like that. Not sure if you understand what i mean. Now. The most important question... Deluge VS Octatrack mk2 VS MPC's VS MASCHINE+ and others as the main setup brain? That's a big one I know, but maybe you can make an ultimate comparison in a new video? Considering you have experience with pretty much all of those. Currently wait for my deluge but I would love it to have more performance-oriented features like fader in octatrack.

    I’m new to the synth world and the Deluge looks very intriguing as I’ve been wanting to add a groovebox / sequencer … at first it looked like an alien spaceship dashboard, but after watching reviews it is starting to make a lot of sense and seems to cover a lot of bases. The hardest thing for me to wrap my mind around is how to connect it with my gear in DAWless setup … which is just a Minilogue XD at this point. Since the XD has two outputs for sound and the deluge has a single line in, does a simple Y-splitter work for transmitting stereo? I’m assuming the XD needs to send sound to the Deluge (again, I’m dipping my toes into this magical [super confusing] world). There are some good videos on the MIDI setup with external gear, but it is hard to find details on how everyone is interfacing sound with the Deluge. Any tips would be appreciated.
    Your GAS videos are helping me from putting myself in debt. Keep up the good work!

    • @ChaitanyaBhagwatChai
      @ChaitanyaBhagwatChai 2 роки тому

      I realize this reply is a year late, but perhaps it's still valuable. If not to you, then someone else. Typically, you use the Deluge's midi out to connect to other gear (you can put a midi splitter box in between if you have more than one). The audio outputs for the Deluge and all other equipment go into a mixer. For example, I sequence my Waldorf Blofeld and Roland SE-02 from the Deluge. The audio out for all 3 instruments goes into a cheap Behringer mixer before sending it to headphones or speakers. Hope it helps!

    • @MidlifeSynthesist
      @MidlifeSynthesist  2 роки тому

      As a huge fan and long time user of both the Octatrack and Deluge, I would advise against it. Adding the OT to a Deluge setup might be wiser, but it’s like going from playing candy crush to dark souls😜. Both fun, but OT is less flexible and more inscrutable than the Deluge. Amazing box though! Let me know how it all turns out, cheers!

      @@MidlifeSynthesist Thank you for your advice. I also thought about adding the Octatrack to the current setup. On the other hand I would like to keep it slim and put a ready to play setup into a flight case. Actually I use the Deluge with four mono synths on a mixer.The Octatrack could take the place of the mixer. It could mix and sample the mono synths and add FX. The output of the Octatrack can be connected to the Deluge input. This would keep the current setup on its same size, but adds more possibilities in a live setup.
