One attractive thing about Vertical Axis Machines. On conventional wind turbines the generator set set is mounted at the top of the pylon. Increasing the difficulty of servicing or repair of needed. Plus increasing the mass at the top of the pylon requires mass in the foundation. With a Vertical Axis Machine the generator set is mounted basically at ground level giving much easier access to the mechanical systems.
You can have the starting columns on a cam which make them move into the centre when speed increases to increase RPM. Just like a figure skater changing from arms wide out to arms on her chest. Speed increase is dramatic. André in Sydney
It's a trade off between starting torque and mechanism complexity. I prefer to use a more powerful Magnus rotor => ua-cam.com/video/gMym621FtR8/v-deo.html ,rather than adding complexity to the mechanism.
@@SmartServo_org Renewable energy generators are largely about reliability and long term use for low cost. Keeping it simple helps lower running costs overall so completely agree :)
More conventional smaller VAWTs would also create a Magnus effect force in the opposite direction of rotation, right? I was also wondering about the three small VAWTs configuration, Vs say 2 or 4 small VAWTs. A bigger number presumably shadowing each others' wind more. PS: which text-to-speech software did you use?
I'm not sure what the three small VAWTs you mention are. There's only 1 VAWT here. If you mean blades or rotors, the more the number, the greater the starting torque but the less efficient. google translator
@@SmartServo_org greeting. Hi may I ask if you have an available document for the patent report of this product? We are using the same idea that you presented here in our study too and we would like to include your claims in our paper in order to strengthen our study. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
The public document of this patent is as link => patents.google.com/patent/US20210163109A1/en?oq=US20210163109A1, which has not been approved except for Taiwan.
I hv ideas, not sure original or not, 1 was but it got away from me, anyway there is no way without money to determine efficiency, small scale model has some torque to it, if it works as i suppose, useful, so I wud b willing to put it out there, with some recognition, other ideas I promote, again not complete sure, no discouraging words yet, spinning battery space wheel,
This is just an experimental setup and can't be used outdoors, so I didn't measure the total weight, maybe 2 kg. Each blade is 150 g with aluminum tubes inside. The rotor is made of Styrofoam so it's very light. Each small motor is Only 55 g. The height of the wind turbine is 0.4m and the diameter is 1m.
It's a good idea to try and reduce the power input and maximise power output from renewable. It would be amazing to have one at home that could raise up and down a pole above trees and only when it's windy etc.
Compared with starting a small windmill by drag blades, according to my experiments, the torque of Magnus rotor is larger, so the rotor can be designed to be smaller, and the interference to the lift blades is smaller and the efficiency is better. As for the big windmill, as mentioned in the video, you can save money by replacing the huge starter motor and reducer.
Wow! Would have been useful to hide the Magnus effect starter turbine from the wind after the main turbine catches up and gains its own rotation. Maybe. 🤷♂
In my few experiments, the Magnus starter did not slow down the main turbine much when the rotor was stopped. Because the starting torque is generated by the rotation of the rotor, the size of the rotor can be as small as possible, not as large as the traditional drag blade.
@@SmartServo_org Well, the starter -even a tiny one- stands in the air stream which turns the main turbine. If that starter could disappear completely, slightly more wind energy would blow onto the turbine blades. And, yes, I realize this type of starter is more effective than any conventional option used today. I just have no idea how to make the starter vanish, it’s not a freaking Optimus Prime transformer :) Oh, wait! An idea. What if you put the starter above the main turbine?
No generator in this test. The characteristics of Darrieus turbine are high efficiency but poor self-starting ability. The common method is to use wider blades (or increase blade number) to help start, but this will reduce the top speed and is not conducive to efficiency, so it is difficult to balance startability and efficiency. This video Demonstrating a concept, the narrow blades can be started by the rotating rotor (Magnus effect), when the turbine speed is fast enough, the narrow blades can achieve high efficiency, and the Magnus rotor can be stopped.
Too many blades will lead to low speed, although it is easier to start but inefficient. Conversely, a windmill with few blades has higher efficiency but is difficult to start and must have a starting device.
In the video, the encoder is divided into 3 layers, the upper 2 layers are 2 semi-circular plates with a difference of 90 degrees, which are used to divide 360 degrees into 4 areas, each area is 90 degrees, and the initial position can be estimated as the center of the current area, so the error is no more than +/- 45 degrees, which is small enough to make the initial rotation of the rotor correct according to the command you wanted. When the wind turbine starts to rotate, since it only rotates in the same direction, the pulse of the third layer can be used to calculate the angle of the main shaft, and when a change in "area" is detected, the current position can be corrected again.
I constantly doubt the use of these types of power generators. Every excited new demonstration is always conducted under 'no-load' conditions. Success is claimed at just overcoming the basic friction of the bearings. No surplus power is ever seen except the lighting of a couple of LED bulbs, which at a few milliamps is pitiful. In this demonstration, six powerful fans just manage to spin up the rotor making an impressive demo. Attach a generator to the main shaft and the surplus power would just about drive a Hearing Aid. The Savonius type of rotor, with it's inevitably low Rotor RPM, will have the added drag of the up-ratio gearing to drive the generator, adding even more friction to the assembly. I commend the energy given to these experiments but I fear the basic science is a limit to success in any real form.
This type of eggbeater rotor has been proven to fail miserably. Also the variable pitch blades are not complicated at all. Search for Sharp Cycloturbine vawt for the best, self starting darrieus type of wind turbine.
Great idea to use magnus rotors driven by small bldc motors for starting only ! Bravo !

high rpm generator is used here?
no
i am not going to buy it though. I'll buy low rpm. which provides high resistance to wind in starting. you don't have to wait for magnas effect.
Maybe you need to measure the TSR (tip speed ratio) of the turbine to estimate how well the turbine is performing.
