Interesting design ! :)

Great, great video! This is science! I live in an area where the wind rarely reaches 2 m/s, so I always excluded any kind of wind generator, I'd be curious to see if this type could work or not. Probably here solar energy is a better choice, unfortunately. I would love to build one of these
2 m/s is too low to utilize wind energy. maybe get faster wind speed by raising the altitude. This video is used to demonstrate the method of enhancing the Magnus effect. As for Magnus wind turbine, please refer to => ua-cam.com/video/9AdpggaOfF0/v-deo.htmlsi=R7wUJsnYsU_047aB
I've seen your other video, it's very interesting as well. Probably it's better to choose another source than wind, at least here, but in more windy areas, it will probably be a good choice. Is there any difference between this type of vertical turbine, and the horizontal with propellers in terms of how much energy is required to start rotating?
No blades, no efficiency. If it had wings (darrieus), it would be simpler and better.
darrieus suffers from poor start ability if small solidity for high efficiency. A good way is to take advantage of both =>ua-cam.com/video/9AdpggaOfF0/v-deo.htmlsi=o0-q8l4j6Mgl9aZS

Hello, that's fantastic content right here, thank you for sharing it! I have a question though : I can imagine that helical blades reduce the torque oscillations, but is there any efficiency difference between helical and H rotor VAWTs ?
Now you need to furl the drag turbine after starting
Excellent video! Carrying the "exhaust" idea to an extreme, what would a stack of end plates do, if they moved air to the shaft's ends?
End plates work well at low speeds, but lift is saturated and drag is high at high speeds. In fact, the end plate can be considered a special case of a blade where the pitch angle is 0 and the solidity is 100%. Increasing the pitch angle as speed increases maintains the best results.

Is it possible to get the stl file for the part connecting the savonius to the shaft
The difference is so small...
Power and speed are not just linear relationships, but cubic relationships
Too bad not enough companies are interested in wind energy. In some places where the winds are constant and strong, these would be ideal energy production devices. But if they were ever produced, the manufacturer would price the things as much as a 5 series BMW.
As far as I know, there are many companies interested in wind energy, but they cannot provide a good product to satisfy the market.Vertical axis wind turbines currently on the market are notorious and I try to come up with a new way to change that.
Hi ! We are two french students and we are leading some research and experiments on magnus effect wind turbines. We would like to build it ourselves to test it with different parameters. Is it possible to have more details on the construction of this turbine (especially on motors) ?
URLs to all project files are listed below the video description. The motor model is DC130
@@SmartServo_org Hello again ! We've been going through the documents filed under the video but we still have some questions left. How did you build the gear reducer (or did you buy it ? what type is it ?) ? How does the tachometer work exactly ? And what is the purpose of the Arduino card, does it only receive information or also control the motors ?
@@EliseVeyrat you can get the gear box on amazon by searching"gear box arduino",To avoid too large a gear ratio to reduce the speed, 20 is a good choice. Since the rotor should rotate in opposite directions on the windward and leeward sides, the Arduino controls the speed and direction of the 3 motors according the azimuth sensor below the main shaft. As can be seen, two semi-circular plates are arranged at 90 degrees apart to divide a plane into 4 quadrants. at power up ,guessing at the center of the quadrant make the error less than +/- 45 degree which is small enough to drive the rotor in the right direction. when the main shaft rotates through the quadrants, the correct azimuth can be found. then count the pulse from the third plate with 40 holes on it to get the real time precise azimuth.
The trouble besides not starting is that even though it can go fast, it has no torque. Once you start loading it the tsr goes way down, as well as the rpm.
The load should be well regulated to avoid stalling, refer to => ua-cam.com/video/9kdRJRlyKRg/v-deo.htmlsi=BXmTISIRYbHJPcxS
Thanks
I have to wonder if it wouldn't just be easier and cheaper to have a small motor and propeller mounted on the main wings. It could even works as a generator recovering the power used in starting the windmill. Or since you are using electric power to start the turbine, why not just use the main generator as a motor to start the turbine.
Starting a small Darrieus wind turbine with an electric motor is possible, but not suitable for large windmills => ua-cam.com/video/9AdpggaOfF0/v-deo.htmlsi=b-G_XPWIguWE6TJe
I wonder if you could reduce the pressure on the rotor between the end caps by having the rotor tapered, so that the center is wider than the ends. Another idea is create the rotor using disks like a Tesla turbine, which might have better flow attachment.
The description of TSR of horizontal is correct, but the descriptions of two types of VAWT are wrong.
Have you ever looked into a "Sharp Cycloturbine". Variable pitch blades, in the Darrieus H vawt style. It's a great turbine.
Variable pitch blades can achieve self-starting and are highly efficient. However, the mechanism is complex, heavy, and prone to wear due to high-speed rotation.
You can make the darrieus turbine self-start by setting the blades at an AOA of about 4- 6 Degrees.
But this will reduce efficiency
@@SmartServo_org it will also reduce complexity.
Comparative performance of Vawt and Hawt wind turbines. Vawt is at a lower altitude, and starts working earlier than Hawt. ua-cam.com/users/shortsZqweCWvDos8
I sugest keeping it simpler and make a darrious/savonious hybrid turbine because the savonous blades have good self starting capabilities and darious turbines have good efficiency and a hybrid of tge two has the darious sweep a much larger area. Assuming peek performance of darious turbine is with TSR at 4, and savonious at maybe 0.8, then the savonious tip radius should be 0.8/4 = 1/5th the darious turbine radious. Adjust darious radius up or down to further optimize.
Thank you for your suggestion. Using drag blades is the traditional way to start the Darrieus wind turbine and is no longer worth researching. In fact, there is a price to pay for starting through drag blades, which reduces the efficiency of the lift blades. => ua-cam.com/video/qAYjPSDGPo4/v-deo.htmlsi=k7pk7PRDiFB8X5u7&t=33
@@SmartServo_org the magnus rotors and their abilities were interesting. But, I don't see the necessity for "high torque" just the general capability to self the start. Yes, the radius effects the tip speed, in a given wind. as your video demonstrated and my comments point out, generally in a given wind, a larger diameter drag turbine will rotate slower and that an even smaller diameter turbine will spin faster in the same given wind. I pose that had your video tested an even smaller diameter drag turbine, it's possible to get the whole turbine spinning faster than a purely Darious turbine in the same given wind speed. Lastly, for a little more outside the box thinking, pardon the pun, you could put the drag cross section of the turbine outside the lift cross section.
Please how much filament did you use to 3d print the parts
I can’t remember clearly, it’s about 1KG
is this a squirrel-cage motor?
I don’t think so, it should be a BLDC motor.
Hi, ive been following through this series of your experimentation, congrats on the regulated power output to mantain the speed of the rotor! by the way, it is known that on winds of 4m/s or lower there is bareley any energy, so it would be interesting to see how your turbine performs on higher windspeeds with the generator pluged, and also to see if they TPR goes up since the tipical optimal darrieus performance is with TPR above 3 or 4. Anyways i'm looking forward to see how you continue to develop your project! Really nice content!
Thank you for continuing to follow my channel. Regarding higher wind speed, I cannot achieve it in my simple wind tunnel. I'm trying to figure out how to move these devices outdoors for testing,
Does evacuation via bladed ends reduce the effect of surface roughness on lift?
Exhausting air through the blade end can increase the air flow and reduce resistance without affecting other characteristics.
El primer diseño me parece excelente para aplicarlo a una bomba de succión del agua. Aprovechando ese torque ya no se necesita hacer reducciones ya que en este caso interesa que tenga torque y poca velocidad
Yes, you are right! Most people only think of it as a wind turbine. In fact, it can be regarded as a wind motor that can produce large torque and only requires a small motor and energy. Torque can be easily increased by extending the struts, without any reduction gearbox.

@@pedrosolismunoz2688Glad to hear you're implementing this, Here are some reminders that I think are important : Since the rotor must rotate in opposite directions on the windward and leeward sides, the inertia of the rotor should be as small as possible to reduce energy consumption. what's the material used for the drag blades?

Could you please measure power output, not RPMs. At the end such turbines should generate electricity, not be a nice looking toy with high RPM, right?
@killerwolf7676Why do I ask - I spend quite a lot of time trying to find some tests. THERE IS NO ANY. At least no successful tests on vertical generators. People claim, independent tests, efficiency curves on a paper or in PDF, other blablablabla. But no real non-stop video from really independent "amateurs" where an inverter is connected and this vertical things deliver something reasonable - 100-200-1000W. The maximum I have seen was in order of 10 W from a 1.5-2meters big turbine. As an example ua-cam.com/video/mxSDieRRcz8/v-deo.html There is another video similar to this one, where as fast as load is applied, the turbine slows down and generates less then a bicycle dynamo even at a strong wind..
@@TushhsuT The power generation experiment is in progress. In addition, the Darrieus wind turbine is a lift type and must operate at high speeds to achieve its full potential. If the wind speed and rotational speed are not disclosed in the video, there is no way to know the tip speed ratio TSR, making it impossible to determine whether the turbine is started or not. Many lift windmills actually only rely on drag to operate. Low power is not the point but to be able to clarify what the problem is.
Remember that a motor will make it slow and not turn that fast.
motor? or generator ?
@killerwolf7676 you are right
this is pretty cool
thanks !
I would say that It has blades on the foam cylinder
the strip on the cylinder is not necessary => ua-cam.com/video/XmZwYpoKQ8Y/v-deo.htmlsi=R0IujWvqjNI3tsB0&t=22
the strip on the cylinder presents the force for cylinder's rotation, then causes outer turbine rotating. you can compare the rotation speed difference between with and without the strips. and you can test by using the cylinder with very smooth surface such as thin foil
why are there some sources that say that for a 3 blade HAWT, the optimum TSR is 4.2? (4*pi/n), but some other literature says it's like 8
The solidity (nxchord/radius) may be different
ua-cam.com/video/Md5sqdAv6Vg/v-deo.htmlsi=gv0pbDhMajWd7w-r
"I'm looking for a video tutorial that demonstrates the step-by-step CAD modeling of a Darrieus VAWT and other components, detailing each component assembly."
You are adding rotational energy to the system from the motors speeding it up. There’s not enough evidence for the magnus effect causing the speed up
Those counter rotating cylinders would have a gyroscopic effect that would stress the axes to death and most likely would bust it.
A well designed Darious, i understand, has its highest efficency with a tip speed ratio closer to 6 when loaded and is operating at just over 35% efficency.
yes i think you are right
