I've grown up in Italy, Austria, Germany. I've met multiple nationalities, I've always been curious about foreigners.
When I was a child, I remember that in summer my town was hosting children from the areas around chernobyl; it was still the soviet union at that time and the wall of berlin was still up.
I've worked with some Russians, emigrated from their country; people that had an interesting childhood.
In all these 40 years, I've never perceived that my generations (I'm from the '80s) had prejudices against Russia. We have not been grown to have such prejudices by our education systems or through propaganda aimed at the young people.
I was mostly ignorant about the events after WWII and of the last decades.
Being someone that is normally not interested in politics and governments, I have never been reached by any strong message against Russia.
I started getting more involved only this year, after an acquaintance from Ukraine wrote some messages in February, scared about what was going to happen to her.
It's only then that I realized that the russian government is doing a bad propaganda against the "west" and its unmoral values, together with the orthodox church. Talks about nazists and fascists were being resumed, russian embassies abroad started publishing articles on those extreme ideologies.
I realized that the older generations might have grown under a higher ideological division between Russia and the western countries, and this division is now being revived.
I hate the russian government; and not only for the war in Ukraine and for the vicious lies that it uses to hide its wrongdoing. But also for how it threatens the opposition in Russia, both citizens and aspiring political parties. The disrespect that it has for human lives is atrocious.

In Britain the government can change. The electorate (British people) can vote it out in regular general elections. Sadly, the Russian people cannot get rid of Putin. Political opponents are imprisoned and general elections are rigged so that Putin and his cronies win and remain in power.

My grandfather, who was a child when Russia invaded Finland, used to say, and still says, that Russians are good people who form awful societies.
His family was forced to leave their home, to evacuate, before the Russian/Soviet army came. They settled to another house in central Finland. During the war, war prisoners were placed in large houses, to work. So my grandpa, then a child, got to know those young soldiers. They were nice, he says, even if their army destroyed his home and eventually took over their old land, which to this day, is still a part of Russia.
He has nothing against Russian individuals, but everything against the society and regime that took his home and now the homes of so many Ukrainiens. And I throughly agree with him.

No, it isn't. Democratically elected governments do, by and large, and on the average, reflect the people they represent. Governments that are not democratically elected don't necessarily represent the people by their actions, but they do represent the political apathy, the political immaturity, and the self-centredness of those people. The current Russian government says a great deal about the Russian people.

My mother was a child in England during WW2. She lost many of her friends and classmates to bombing raids. The terror of hiding from them never went away.
She was nine years old and held the hand of her best friend when she died in hospital. For the rest of her life my mother suffered because of malnutrition and food rationing. She had a passionate hatred of the German people for the rest of her life.

I visited Russia few times. I have been in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Kazan. I never had any argument with ordinary Russian citizens but I noticed few things talking to them about life and history. They are been told different history in some cases. They are really affright of the Police. Basically once they get rid of this current government and going to "wake up" in different world. I also seen outside of a big cities and the condition of a house/roads/sidewalk are terrible.
Makes you think who they would have signed up to fight the war. So much poverty in the country despite its oil wealth.

The Russian people seem very bright, astute...and defeated. No one speaks of protesting or revolting because they cannot.
Putin has started this war only because of the society he rules. He knows there is no better way to acquire their admiration than by invading neighbors in "small victorious wars". They reacted this way after any of his previous wars, including 2014 against Ukraine.
Putin could not stop the war after the first phase had failed. Not because of the West. Germans would be more than happy to forgive, forget and go back to business as usual. Putin can't stop because of his own society, the innocent Russian population. They love "small victorious wars". They even have a special term for them (малая победоносная война). But what they don't like are the lost wars. That would mean Putin is not strong anymore and he is not the one to be afraid of.

We in America see how far removed the ordinary citizen here is from having political power, and we know that in Russia individual citizens have far less, so we fear for the well-being of Russian citizens rather than fear Russians. The educated in Russia don't care what the West thinks of us. The West is dictatorship with democratic face, and we are not interested in hearing its hypocritical critics.

I think it's probably harder to get old people to respond to their surveys, especially ones who were adults during the Cold War, even if their experiences were more with Brezhnev or Khrushchev than Stalin, because their parents experienced Stalin, and keeping your mouth shut about the government was a concept that was surely drilled into them as children. There was a time when incorrectly answering surveys like this resulted in chopping timber in Siberia for the next ten years, and older generations know that well.
Yes, the older generation will of course be positive about Putin's thoughts about a Russian great empire. Most of the older generation do not have access to news information other than state propaganda information, which makes them vulnerable to Putin's imperialist propaganda. I live in the US and before the war had no issue with Russia... I primarily just thought of chess and Russian literature. Also I have no problem with whatever form of government they want to have; that's their decision of course.
It's the disruption of the peaceful world order and mass destruction of cities and human lives that Russia has embarked on that I'm opposed to. I'm opposed to any country, my own included, using violence against another country for gain in this way.

I'm from Poland and we are so called the most 'russophobic' nation by Russia government I would like to put 2 statements about it directing people from Russia. 1) We were part of the same system up to 1989 and we are reading between lines whats going on in Russia because we do know how Russians think. Streghtening dictatorship, heavy propaganda, manipulating historical facts, more extreme statements from Russia goverment, army growth and subordinate west europe from Russias enenrgy resources was leading to war. 2) How the hell can we be 'russophobic' towards ordinary citizen when before war about 2mln ukrainians and 0,5mln belorousians were working in the Poland and we don't know the differences between Ukrainian, Russian and Belarousian languages. (eastern slavic languages sounds the same for average Poles)

I think most thinking people understand the difference between a people and their government. But also hold the people responsible for what their government does in their names. It seems, because of the war, others are less impressed by Russia's boasts of it's military prowess. Are fed up with Putin's threats to use nukes, his aggression, fueled by an ego driven fantasy, and the destabilization his actions have caused around the world. From millions of refugees, to businesses leaving Russia and having to relocate, restructure, and losing assets, to young ,intelligent Russians leaving as fast as they can because they see the writing on the wall for their futures, Putin has damaged his country, alienated most of the world, which now thinks of Russia as an untrustworthy, terrorist nation, and will be facing war crimes charges, isolation, and and a reputation like Nazi Germany's for many years to come. I think Russians should worry less about what others think, and should really be questioning, and facing, the reality of their own consciences, and country, which is a mess.

I've been to St. Petersburg. It shocked me how young people praised Putin (in 2015). And they wanted to explain me that "Crimea was always part of Russia". And they even didn't know how large is their country. And didn't know anything about the history of their motherland. It was a sobering experience to directly face the effects of propaganda.
my brother lives in Canada in Toronto, I would also like to visit there someday. And so come when you have the opportunity, there are many different cities and regions with their own culture and different peoples, coming to which you find yourself as if in another country, no matter what you are told there, we are very friendly to foreigners.

Again I can't say how I love Russia and most of its people, culture and tradition, I can and do distinguish between ordinary citizens, and the government. At the beginning of the early 2000s even I liked Putin as he was a strong leader and the opposite of everything that Boris Yeltzin stood for. I have Russian friends, I've learned Russian language and visited 10 years ago. The people vote for their Government (we recently had a change in Government from last elections held this year). If you think the Russian people is innocent and Putin and his government is solely to blame for this war, you are wrong. A large portion of the Russian population agree with Putin, they dream of an expanded empire, they feel that other countries do not respect Russia properly, OR they have stuck their head in the sand for decades letting Putin do his thing. Inaction and thinking that Putin is not their concern is just as much to blame for this war as anything else.
But it's the people who are supposed to hold their goverment responsible for the things that are being done in their name. This is what I personally blame the everyday russian for, the dodging of responsibility, the "I know my govenrment is bad and is killing people by the thousands, but I'm not really into politics" bullshit that I hear in these videos constantly.

I’m not Russian but I am of Russian heritage. Most Russians are good people who just want to live the best life possible. I don’t hate anyone. Most Americans come from immigrants from the past including my family. I lived in Europe for 5 years only because my dad was in the US Air Force and was stationed in Europe. We were assigned Germany and my dad got us out of it as the Berlin Wall was still standing as it was 1978 when we moved to Holland. Germany was a different place then as it is now.
It may be out of 1420's wheelhouse (video wise) but I'd encourage him to take a look at Vlad Velxler's channel (he's ethnic Russian and a political philosopher steeped in Russian history). His thoughts on the state of *being* in Russia are enlightening and might inspire some good questions for people.

If this channel is anything to go by, foreigners need to make a distinction between individual Russians, and the actions of the Russian government. It is not uncommon for people to not necessarily support their government. For example, I am not particularly enthusiastic about most measures adopted by the Scottish government, and to assume that because I am Scottish, I must support those actions is naive. This channel does excellent work showing the rest of us what the Russian people think, and what they think does not always agree with actions of their government either.

l'm American and l love the Russian people and the culture. l follow a lot of Russian channels and hold no ill will towards the people. l also thought Putin was once a great leader for Russia. That was until he invaded Ukraine. lts really tragic for the world anytime there is senseless violence. One thing that's great about this channel is the quality of the answers, both young and old. If you asked Americans complex political questions you would probably get gibberish as an answer. Also l like the way this channel doesn't have an agenda. We have the same kind of street questioners, but they are always looking to promote a certain political ideology and try to steer the videos to affirm that ideology, instead of being impartial.

I had Russian neighbors who lived right below me in our old place. They were great neighbors. We had a bit of a bumpy start, really due to cultural differences, but once we developed an understanding of one another we built a respectful and friendly relationship. Really good neighbors. I don’t know any Americans personally that hate Russians off hand. We don’t tend to blame citizens for the actions of their government. At least the people in my life don’t. I know there are people that do, but they’re in the minority and they’re very wrong.

My wife and daughter are Russian, after Feb 24th I feared that Putler might hold a referendum in our house here in the UK and try to create the Bedford Oblast in two of the bedrooms, the bathroom, the kitchen and the sitting room. One of the greatest things the internet did was to allow for people to speak in a way such as this, and bypass propaganda being fed to them. I find Russian people admirable for the great majority. I hope if any Russian citizen happens to read this comment, that they would know most Americans like myself feel the same.
In Western Europe we understand that the Russian people don't think with one mind, so only the narrow minded will think negatively about the entire population. Like me, many people in the EU have friends in the Russian Federation, so this situation is even more tragic.
Problem is such view is very naive if one takes a closer look on Russian stats on various issues, reads what Russian read and talk about and learns that well, basically 70% of this nation does agree on most things with President Putin. So well, people might still believe "second Russia" exists but the true issue might be that there is mostly one Russia and it's current politics as a true reflection of what this Russia is about. I do not claim it definitely is the case but the current situation plus what Russia population reveals about itself to us in various ways should at least make the West to reflect upon the question: what if there is not " second Russia" but only this one Russia supportive of its current politics as we can observe it? The third state after USA and China? 11th by GDP, 57th GDP per capita, an obsolete and under performing military, struggling to buy modern products, kicked out of numerous major events including sporting and cultural, not in the G8, collapse of soft power influence around the world, excluded from numerous world banking systems, having a brain drain as people do not want to stay in a country struggling economically, a country that cannot make value added products, just sell bulk raw materials, having to go to war to prop up the fragile leader who keeps poisoning enemies.
I don’t think he is smart, I think he is well spoken and constructs a good argument, but the premise of it is fundamentally wrong.
I'm in my late 50's and Russophobia hasn't been a thing since my grandparents time. Even then citizens were more pitied like we pity North Koreans today.

Strength can mean more than just their economy. Militarily they are definitely one of the strongest states and they have plenty of potential to succeed in other fronts.

I worked with many Russians and found them to be funny, wonderful, and intelligent people. It amazes me that they never achieved a higher standard of living. Perhaps history is hard to escape.
Common people are the same. It's our leaders who are from a different country.
Obviously Russia’s government’s actions will have an impact on its people and many will associate one with the other. It’s always like that. It was no different 80 years ago with the Germans. Some older Europeans still hold a grudge on Germans to this day. Why would it be any different this time?

I'm an American and don't think poorly of Russians. I visited Russia many years ago and liked the culture and the people. I'd like to visit again someday.
