Natasha here's a long message that the UA-camr Kraut uploaded that he hopes may reach those in Russian or have friends in Russia.
I have seen a lot of talk, on social media, on TV and even in papers, full of optimism in anticipation of the supposedly impending collapse of the Putin regime.
I am far more pessimistic and caution you against this optimism.
I have Russian friends and over the last weeks they have all left Russia for Estonia, Finland, and Germany, and should you have Russian friends who oppose Putin
I would highly advise you to talk them into leaving their country. Because I believe things are going to become very grim in Russia.
I studied history at the Institute for Slavic cultural studies in Vienna, I have taken a special interest in Russian history. And let me tell you, the one thing that has happened throughout Russian history whenever a Russian leader went to war - were domestic crackdowns and increasing authoritarianism. The only exception to this was when the Soviet Union lost the war in Afghanistan, and when the Tsar lost the first world war, and those are exceptions because they were tied to a collapse of the Russian state structures themselves into chaos and anarchy (The end of communism and the end of the Russian monarchy)
I assume that most of you live in democratic countries. And if you do, you need to keep in mind that you live in a civil society with political powers held by the public. When we go to war as democracies, our societies have the right to critique and influence the war through electoral means and public pressure.
For example, Spain joined the Iraq war in 2003, the Spanish public hated it, and a year later the Spanish people voted their government out and the new government instantly pulled Spain out of the Iraq war. That does not happen in non-democratic countries. When Saddam Hussain lost his war against Kuwait he started a genocide against Shia Arabs. When the Nazis realized they had lost the second world war in 1943 they intensified the Holocaust. When the Ottomans started losing the first world war they committed the Armenian genocide. When Pakistan lost its 1971 war against India it resulted in a coup and brutal authoritarian regime. When Stalin lost the Winter War he launched a brutal purge of Soviet Intellectuals and military leaders. Authoritarian regimes, can not admit to mistakes. There is no bigger mistake for an authoritarian ruler than losing a war. Accountability for war always lies with those who start it, and rather than admitting a mistake or a defeat an authoritarian ruler will always crackdown on civil dissent first.
The war is currently not looking good for Putin. It is possible that he may lose it. What is certain already is that this war has come at an enormous cost to the Russian people. And I believe Putin will blame that cost on some fall-guy in his government (probably the boss of the internal security services) and then crackdown on any and all remaining public dissent with a ruthlessness that we have not seen in Russia in decades. If you have Russian friends in Russia who oppose this war or oppose Putin, you should ask them to leave Russia.
I hope I am wrong. I really hope I am wrong. But, if the study of history is by any means an indicator by which one can predict future developments, then I believe there are very dark times ahead for Russia. And that we will see Russia return to the type of iron-fisted authoritarianism that we have not seen since some of the darkest days of the Soviet Union.
You do such a nice job of describing your viewpoint, despite having to curate your words so carefully. Many of us feel the same way even in our countries. Thank you.
I am sitting with several Ukrainians who have fled, and my life has changed drastically because of the situation. I like to listen to you, hope that you continue giving the clever and sound Russia a voice. There is a stress, fear and sadness in all of us, also in your face. Love from Sweden.

It may be called "madness," but the dictator of Russia is not a madman. There is a definite cause of this war of aggression in the abstract ideas that most Russians accept and the attitudes they embrace. The reason that so many people believe the propaganda and support the dictator is not because they are stupid. The reason is that the abstract ideas they accept and the attitudes they are taught lead them to want to support the dictator and rationalize that support with the propaganda. It's the collectivist nationalism and fatalism in the Russian culture that Russians have to fight, if they want a better future for Russia.
Russians tend to see their primary role in life--their moral duty--as sacrificing their wellbeing for their country's glory and dominance. Even if individual Russians don't always live this way, the official ideology of their society is that they are to sacrifice for Russia. This expresses itself in who they will accept as a leader: a nationalist strongman who "has the good of Russia at heart," and is willing to sacrifice Russian and Ukrainian lives to make that "good" happen.
Many Russians are also fatalistic: Their characteristic attitude is "What will be, will be. My role in life is to accept it and not fight it." This is not an attitude conducive to fighting for freedom. The point of freedom is to enable you as an individual to fight for your life and happiness--to fight against disasters and change your circumstances. The Russian attitude is the opposite of the American "can do" attitude that led to freedom in the West in the first place.
The novelist and philosopher, Ayn Rand, left Russia (USSR) for the USA because she saw that the dominant ideas in Russia were antithetical to her life and freedom. I would encourage people to read Ayn Rand's novels and nonfiction. (Hopefully, Russians can still find them and buy them.) One of her shorter novels, Anthem, can be found online for free. There's also lots of information about her ideas online, including my site, "Objectivism in Depth." I think understanding Ayn Rand's ideas--and the issues in philosophy in general--will help people fight the bad ideas in the world that lead to horrible wars like this one.
@@SwordOfApollo As much as I've heard about Ayn Rand, I don't know how I managed never to find out until now that she was from Russia. I have lots of libertarian-type friends that are fans of Rand. My own impression of her not having read any of her books is that her vision of freedom is soulless, that chasing money with no concern for what we're actually doing or its effect on the world is the way to build a better world. I think of Solzhenitsyn having an opposite vision, particularly in his criticisms of the West (like in his Harvard commencement address, which I highly recommend, by the way.)

If you read The Fountainhead, you'll find that the hero, Howard Roark, is the opposite of a money-grubbing materialist, unconcerned with others. He doesn't care what any random stranger thinks of him, that's true. He doesn't bow and surrender his judgment to public opinion. But he develops friendships and love relationships with others and cares deeply about them. He forgoes short-term riches to uphold his principles and his vision of excellent architecture. I really think you should read Rand's books before judging what her ideas are about, since there are many unreliable sources in our culture and her ideas are so different from the mainstream that it's difficult to understand her without taking the time to read her.

Someone from Ukraine. Natasha, thank you for speaking out. Not many people in Russia have that courage. In the end, it's not about being from Russia or not - it's about being a human or not.
They've been defeated. Putin and the millions who collaborated with him whittled down any potential opposition over the last 20 years and subdued them. That's why it's important that Ukraine repels the invasion, Putin as former chekist is an expert at repression (he fails as a military strategist) once he gets to power.

Sometimes I feel ridiculous being concerned about a young lady, in a country I have never visited. But I am a father of five, four of which are girls, and because I am a human being with feelings, I also feel pain when others are suffering.
We, the decent people, support you in this difficult time.
You could of course continue your adventures, documenting the changes you see and experience. This is a moment in history and a record of it must be kept. Future generations will need resources to study, and your life will give meaning for others to come.
