I’d like to see the same interview questions in a month. Also, replace “dying” and “death” in the line of questioning with “deaf, blind, paraplegic, quadriplegic, permanent colostomy bag, traumatic brain injury, traumatized,” or the many other realities of war that are far worse and longer lasting than death.
Americans know all about those horrible injuries: USA invaded Iraq for no reason, and 100's of thousands of people were killed. Many civilians. Today, Western oil companies control the Iraqi oil fields. Horrible.
I wouldn't say they are "longer lasting" than death, being that's a pretty permanent state. But I get what you mean, and I agree that a quick death on the battlefield isn't the worst thing that can happen to someone in a war.
What struck me the most was how resignated they all sounded. Even those who opposed the war did so in the most nonchalant way. I'm french and thus might be culturally biased as we're known to be quite vindictive, political and prone to protests. Is it simply cultural? Or does it show the spirit-crushing effect that long-lasting oppression can have on a population?
The last one. It hard to fight when every choice you have is ending with you in jail or pointless. Men who went protesting got mobilized, women got beaten, I can get fired even if I only sigh petition.
It looks to me that at least one young guy has already decided to resist their goverment for his movilization even without sayng doing so. I live in a country whose culture is like middle between Russia and France. I could certanly feel something different from these conversation that I did not few moths ago.

Russians have always been like that. They accept everything what their masters tell them. No free will. Just look at Russian history over the centuries.
Mostly cultural. Mentality of the people that was living under the authoritarian regime for few centuries in a row looks like this. Most of the people either pro-government (watches TV and nothing else, hence believe government 100%) or just "I don't care, it is none of my business. I don't want any problems. Leave me alone, please" type. "You don't understand politics do not interfere.", "Are you the smartest one here ??? Shut up", "We don't know all things. Leave that to ones who works with this and know things", "Don't stand out, you can get yourself some trouble on your ass" Most of these comes from the parents with uprising when you was a child. Echoes of soviet union. Combine such teachings with soviet motto of "Everywhere are enemies outside of our homeland" and the fear of 90s (when extreme poverty crushed every post-soviet country. Russians, mostly the old generation, extremely scared of that times) from where Putin saved them as they believe and you will get the most toxic basis for the current situation. Among all the people of ex Russian Empire and USSR, Russians somehow have this mentality the most. As a resident of post-soviet country I've seen a lot of people with that mentality in my country. We can see such problems in another post-soviet countries also but not too such extremes. It actually even amazes us, people of another countries that was a part of Russian Empire and USSR in the past, "How they are able to tolerate that ? What is the capacity of their tolerance ?". The ones that are not like these 2 types above with times start to giving up in all ways. When you live in a corrupt country where the majority is either supports it, either doesn't give a fuck you just start to lose hope and think like "What can we do ? My opinion doesn't matter anyway. How can I change that ?", "How meetings will help ? I will be fucked up by regime and that's all. What's the point ?". Which you saw in the video. That where that resignation feelings come. You support it or try to not be the part of it. But as we know "You may no be interested in politics, but politics is interested in you". And after the war started it is first time when politics finally came to them directly, straight-up to their houses with the draft paper.

Drafting more people to send people to die more and some of those young people are being drafted and giving up their dreams to die and some commanding officers who don't have care or value with the soldiers all they care is chaos and threats to destroy what we created.
I am at my 20s and seeing some 18 or some father's and sons being send to war is just not a good thing for a war I hate war I hate leaders who wants to throw us as a worthless people and us the world united against a leader who seems to not care about his people.
Then they should stand up against it. Too many young Russians simply looked the other way the first six months of this war and didn’t get involved in politics, and now that they are coming for them, they are all the sudden scared and worried. @@Jim-bs8ln If you've been paying attention to this channel at all you will have seen that most of the young people in his videos have been against the war since the start. And "standing up against it" is much easier said than done. If not enough people do it at once they will just be arrested. And any attempts to organise a big enough "stand" will be shut down. As a girl from Chelyabinsk (lol, never thought I would see my city in a video like that) all of my friends are pissed, but if we talk about older people who are not so educated and rely on TV, then yeah, they are all about mobilization. But they won't go there anyways and it makes me go round the bent when I try to explain that their grandchildren and children may die. Even my professors at uni try to make sure that boys study hard and get pass on exams but it is not something that you can really rely on. I've signed all petitions (against the war and mobilization) but it's more like for my inner peace, cuz that way you can see how many people actually share your views and that's you're not alone.
I hope that the Ukrainian war criminals, who have been shelling civilian infrastructure and killing people, will reach your city and I really want to see their attitude towards you. When troops with SS "Dead Head" chevrons will walk around the city, as is happening now in Kherson. It's hard for me to understand why CNN, BBC and other media show live Ukrainian soldiers with symbols of Nazi Germany. As if the whole world turned a blind eye to what is happening in Ukraine now. Doesn't anyone care about history, because our ancestors fought for the right to exist. My experience with teenagers tells me that young people tend to look smarter than they really are, because they are preoccupied with the future and refuse to study our past at all. These old ideologies of nationalism fade away when those who survive realize that they will need to throw the next generation in to the same bloody mess they were in. “not my child” as they say.... but then there are some who truly unapologetically believe their children should die for the same causes, and this is the downfall of the older generation. I think most people in the west would like Russians to just be part of the international community. The economic agreements that we used to have was a show of good faith. But then they have to go back to the cold war era as if they were fairing better back then.

Partial mobilization is like being kind of pregnant. Your president in one breath says he wants to protect the people of Russia but in another breath is happy and willing to send thousands to the meat grinder with little to no experience. Gotta love a man so willing to protect you.
"Partial mobilization" is an official term. It means calling up reservists (people who have already served). "Full mobilization" is a draft of anyone, not just reservists.

I didn't interpret it that way at all. Based on the rest of the interview, he's clearly critical of the regime so with that in mind this comment is just another sarcastic criticism, how he sees what the regime is doing and how the system is supposed to work (ie blind obedience to the leaders). Not a description of what he personally wants. I'm surprised more people aren't interpreting the comment this way, maybe it's understood differently by people from different areas with different verbal cultures? I live in a neighbouring country to Russia and I could certainly express something like this in a similar sarcastic way.

My favorite was the guy who equated his situation to Forest Gump, because now all smart Russian men will take up education and take other means to avoid the war. The ones who will fight will be the misfits, the Forest Gump type. The Full Metal Jacket Type. Obese, low IQ, etc. or the hyper aggressive type, who made up the Mỹ Lai massacre. The people you do not want in a war will be sent to a war when the country is unmotivated. The Project 100 000 type, or McNamara's Idiots in layman terms. If they survive the meat grinder, their lives will be cursed with PTSD, lower employment opportunities, higher chance of drug and alcohol dependence, lower average salaries, high chance of divorces, etc. I'd do anything in my power to avoid it.

That is how you know that he is aware what country he is living in... he said the truth and with it he explained why he is not supporting the whole Russian invasion into Ukrainian territory without actualy saying anything that could be easly used against him in court.
Something that is not addressed often enough is the impact on the soldiers who try to return to civilian life after witnessing the horrors of war, and this war is particularly horrible because of the deliberate targeting of civilians, including women and children who are not a risk to the soldiers. I am in my 70s and witnessed this as soldiers returned from Vietnam, then when I was older, I witnessed this in the USAF itself while I was serving there. I didn't go to Vietnam but saw the negative impact on many (but not all) who did serve there. This will be worse for both Ukraine and Russia - look for the number of divorces and suicides to skyrocket. A significant percentage of the homeless population in the US are veterans who saw combat somewhere.

They aren't purposely targeting citizens look at combatant to civilian death ratio, usually it is one to one. Russia has done an impressive job at keeping this rate 10:1. They kill 10 Ukraine soldiers for every 1 civilian they have also killed.

Just a note. This is how a view on russia-Ukrainian relations changed by russian government throughout history starting with russian empire to current times: - little russians. Peter the first renamed country from Muscovia to Rossia so that he could steal Rus' legacy and would be hailed as the right monarch. Ukraine that was called Kyivan Rus' or Ruthenia(by the outsiders) was also called Little Rus'. This way Greek and some other nations were calling true country at its original borders and outside regions that were added to enlarge the influence of it were called Big/Great. Thats how there was Little Greece(the original) and Great/Big Greece(controlled territory). Whether Peter 1 bothered to investigate the subject or not is irrelevant, he changed the meaning of it. - great brother. When USSR was on the raising they referring to Ukrainian as a Great Brother. It was to ensure there won't be any attempts to get out as Lenin believed that without Ukraine there can't be USSR empire. - young brother. It quickly changed after Stalin came to power with a bit different methods of control. And as such the new name appeared. - brotherly nations. This was actually the oldest name it was appearing and disappearing throughout centuries but the most popularity it gained during RF times. - nazi. Current term used by RF.

I also think there times where they make differentiation between nazis and Ukrainians (not all Ukrainians are nazis - just the ones in power), but other times all Ukrainians are nazis - whichever is more convenient.

She was living in Buchan District, but, hopefully, not in the town or villages, in stand-alone house. That saved her. So, living most of my life in electoral authoritarianism as if it is not enough, I also can die soon, or get injured, or get jailed. There are no positive outcome in this war possible. Actually i start to feel like the air is getting fresher, today i was able to chat with my taxi driver about everything, war, protests ect. He told me his friend came back from the war alive, he was working there as a driver and helped transfer injured soldiers. He told how complitely not organised army is. If a soldier tries to ask what are they supposed to do, commanders yell at them and threaten their lifes for basic quiestions. I dont think i am so afraid anymore. I am really hoping that the end is near. The biggest dream is to get a new year without Putin. Just imagine. So freaking good.

Considering the equipment, level of training and casualties the DPR/LPR forces have suffered I doubt they're all alive. It's kind of how it works. How many people in the US rose up against the Iraq war when it was going on, compared to the vietnam war when they started drafting people. It's easy to pretend you would take action earlier if you were in these people's shoes.

I believe in russians ability to grow away from apathy and having own thinking. Although Finland very likely will close borders due fear of some russians attempt to bring resources for war efforts and 'letting russians have vacations while people die in Ukraine". If you have heart and know war is not a solution, you definitely will belong in better times of peace.
They are not against the war. They are against to be drafted. They generally don't mind Ukrainians to be killed and children tortured, raped and killed - see lates UN report. They just don't want to be bothered.
What resources can they send to Russia for the war? And I understand not wanting an influx of people into their own country, but on the other hand, they will stay in Russia and be mobilized, although if foreign politicians believe that the Russians will oppose and go to the Kremlin, then fine. It was the stupidest and most harmful decision on the part of Poland, the Baltic States and now Finland to close the borders for people with tourist visas: It was practically the only possible way for dissidents and people who disagree with the Putin regime to escape from the country because you can apply for political asylum only when you are already in the country where you want to hide. The side effect of someone wanting to just go as a tourist is insignificant compared to the humanitarian importance of preserving this corridor of departure.

I'm a Russian girl who has been against this war since its very beginning and many of my loved ones including my boyfriend never supported the war too. I also never voted for Putin. Now I can't believe that all of this is happening. I can't stop crying and thinking of what I'm gonna do now. If my boyfriend goes to war, my life will be broken. All of our plans of getting married and having children will never come true. And I feel like most of the ordinary people's lives will inevitably be broken. I have never thought that I will live in a wartime. It feels surreal and desperate. I also feel sorry for Ukrainian people who lost their homes and their loved ones during the war. This shouldn't have happened. It's so wrong. I also feel responsible for the crimes of Russia. But there are so many people in Russia who are brainwashed by the propaganda and still believe what government tells them. And those who are against are scared to go for protests because they may be severely beaten by the police. Men who go for protests are forcefully taken by the police and sent to war. And we also realise that government doesn't care of our opinion and they're so much stronger than us. Most of us feel desperate and helpless. I hope this war will come to the end as soon as possible and I wish that Ukrainian won. Let's stay strong during this tough times.
I think one should do at least as you do now. That is being against and oppose Russian aggression at least in ways that do not jeopardize your own safety. I think it is now every Russian duty to oppose the "military operation" within their courage now tolerate. You owe that to Ukrainians and to the World. Take care and do not get in trouble.
@@robertocorti9845 I watched different experts on war issues and most of them say that considering the modern war methods and tactics your chance to even try to surrender is minimal. Because in most cases you don't even get to see your "enemy". In most cases you just die from the rocket explosion or step on a bomb and die. Moreover, according to the new Russian law all Russian surrenders are sentenced for 10 years in prison after they come back home. This makes things much more complicated..

Also, replace “dying” and “death” in the line of questioning with “deaf, blind, paraplegic, quadriplegic, permanent colostomy bag, traumatic brain injury, traumatized,” or the many other realities of war that are far worse and longer lasting than death.
Americans know all about those horrible injuries: USA invaded Iraq for no reason, and 100's of thousands of people were killed. Many civilians.

What struck me the most was how resignated they all sounded. Even those who opposed the war did so in the most nonchalant way.
I'm french and thus might be culturally biased as we're known to be quite vindictive, political and prone to protests.
Is it simply cultural? Or does it show the spirit-crushing effect that long-lasting oppression can have on a population?
The last one. It hard to fight when every choice you have is ending with you in jail or pointless. Men who went protesting got mobilized, women got beaten, I can get fired even if I only sigh petition.
It looks to me that at least one young guy has already decided to resist their goverment for his movilization even without sayng doing so. I live in a country whose culture is like middle between Russia and France. I could certanly feel something different from these conversation that I did not few moths ago.

Russians have always been like that. They accept everything what their masters tell them. No free will. Just look at Russian history over the centuries.
Mostly cultural. Mentality of the people that was living under the authoritarian regime for few centuries in a row looks like this. Most of the people either pro-government (watches TV and nothing else, hence believe government 100%) or just "I don't care, it is none of my business. I don't want any problems. Leave me alone, please" type.
"You don't understand politics do not interfere.", "Are you the smartest one here ??? Shut up", "We don't know all things. Leave that to ones who works with this and know things", "Don't stand out, you can get yourself some trouble on your ass" Most of these comes from the parents with uprising when you was a child. Echoes of soviet union. Combine such teachings with soviet motto of "Everywhere are enemies outside of our homeland" and the fear of 90s (when extreme poverty crushed every post-soviet country. Russians, mostly the old generation, extremely scared of that times) from where Putin saved them as they believe and you will get the most toxic basis for the current situation.
Among all the people of ex Russian Empire and USSR, Russians somehow have this mentality the most. As a resident of post-soviet country I've seen a lot of people with that mentality in my country. We can see such problems in another post-soviet countries also but not too such extremes. It actually even amazes us, people of another countries that was a part of Russian Empire and USSR in the past, "How they are able to tolerate that ? What is the capacity of their tolerance ?".
The ones that are not like these 2 types above with times start to giving up in all ways. When you live in a corrupt country where the majority is either supports it, either doesn't give a fuck you just start to lose hope and think like "What can we do ? My opinion doesn't matter anyway. How can I change that ?", "How meetings will help ? I will be fucked up by regime and that's all. What's the point ?". Which you saw in the video. That where that resignation feelings come. You support it or try to not be the part of it. But as we know "You may no be interested in politics, but politics is interested in you". And after the war started it is first time when politics finally came to them directly, straight-up to their houses with the draft paper.

Drafting more people to send people to die more and some of those young people are being drafted and giving up their dreams to die and some commanding officers who don't have care or value with the soldiers all they care is chaos and threats to destroy what we created.
I am at my 20s and seeing some 18 or some father's and sons being send to war is just not a good thing for a war I hate war I hate leaders who wants to throw us as a worthless people and us the world united against a leader who seems to not care about his people.
Then they should stand up against it. Too many young Russians simply looked the other way the first six months of this war and didn’t get involved in politics, and now that they are coming for them, they are all the sudden scared and worried. Freedom isn’t free, and the citizenry of Russia need to take a stand against Putin and his goons.

And "standing up against it" is much easier said than done. If not enough people do it at once they will just be arrested. And any attempts to organise a big enough "stand" will be shut down. What would your plan be if it's so easy?
As a girl from Chelyabinsk (lol, never thought I would see my city in a video like that) all of my friends are pissed, but if we talk about older people who are not so educated and rely on TV, then yeah, they are all about mobilization. But they won't go there anyways and it makes me go round the bent when I try to explain that their grandchildren and children may die. Even my professors at uni try to make sure that boys study hard and get pass on exams but it is not something that you can really rely on. I've signed all petitions (against the war and mobilization) but it's more like for my inner peace, cuz that way you can see how many people actually share your views and that's you're not alone.

When troops with SS "Dead Head" chevrons will walk around the city, as is happening now in Kherson. It's hard for me to understand why CNN, BBC and other media show live Ukrainian soldiers with symbols of Nazi Germany. As if the whole world turned a blind eye to what is happening in Ukraine now. I think most people in the west would like Russians to just be part of the international community. The economic agreements that we used to have was a show of good faith. But then they have to go back to the cold war era as if they were fairing better back then.

Partial mobilization is like being kind of pregnant. Your president in one breath says he wants to protect the people of Russia but in another breath is happy and willing to send thousands to the meat grinder with little to no experience. Gotta love a man so willing to protect you.
"Partial mobilization" is an official term. It means calling up reservists (people who have already served). "Full mobilization" is a draft of anyone, not just reservists.

I didn't interpret it that way at all. Based on the rest of the interview, he's clearly critical of the regime so with that in mind this comment is just another sarcastic criticism, how he sees what the regime is doing and how the system is supposed to work (ie blind obedience to the leaders). Not a description of what he personally wants. I'm surprised more people aren't interpreting the comment this way, maybe it's understood differently by people from different areas with different verbal cultures? I live in a neighbouring country to Russia and I could certainly express something like this in a similar sarcastic way.

My favorite was the guy who equated his situation to Forest Gump, because now all smart Russian men will take up education and take other means to avoid the war. The ones who will fight will be the misfits, the Forest Gump type. The Full Metal Jacket Type. Obese, low IQ, etc. or the hyper aggressive type, who made up the Mỹ Lai massacre. The people you do not want in a war will be sent to a war when the country is unmotivated. The Project 100 000 type, or McNamara's Idiots in layman terms. Something that is not addressed often enough is the impact on the soldiers who try to return to civilian life after witnessing the horrors of war, and this war is particularly horrible because of the deliberate targeting of civilians, including women and children who are not a risk to the soldiers. I am in my 70s and witnessed this as soldiers returned from Vietnam, then when I was older, I witnessed this in the USAF itself while I was serving there. I didn't go to Vietnam but saw the negative impact on many (but not all) who did serve there. This will be worse for both Ukraine and Russia - look for the number of divorces and suicides to skyrocket. A significant percentage of the homeless population in the US are veterans who saw combat somewhere.
And drug abuse will also skyrocket after the war. Criminal as well.

Just a note. This is how a view on russia-Ukrainian relations changed by russian government throughout history starting with russian empire to current times:
- little russians. Peter the first renamed country from Muscovia to Rossia so that he could steal Rus' legacy and would be hailed as the right monarch. Ukraine that was called Kyivan Rus' or Ruthenia(by the outsiders) was also called Little Rus'. This way Greek and some other nations were calling true country at its original borders and outside regions that were added to enlarge the influence of it were called Big/Great. Thats how there was Little Greece(the original) and Great/Big Greece(controlled territory). Whether Peter 1 bothered to investigate the subject or not is irrelevant, he changed the meaning of it.
- great brother. When USSR was on the raising they referring to Ukrainian as a Great Brother. It was to ensure there won't be any attempts to get out as Lenin believed that without Ukraine there can't be USSR empire.

She was living in Buchan District, but, hopefully, not in the town or villages, in stand-alone house. That saved her. Actually i start to feel like the air is getting fresher, today i was able to chat with my taxi driver about everything, war, protests ect. He told me his friend came back from the war alive, he was working there as a driver and helped transfer injured soldiers. He told how complitely not organised army is. If a soldier tries to ask what are they supposed to do, commanders yell at them and threaten their lifes for basic quiestions. I dont think i am so afraid anymore. I am really hoping that the end is near. The biggest dream is to get a new year without Putin. Just imagine. So freaking good.

It was the stupidest and most harmful decision on the part of Poland, the Baltic States and now Finland to close the borders for people with tourist visas: It was practically the only possible way for dissidents and people who disagree with the Putin regime to escape from the country because you can apply for political asylum only when you are already in the country where you want to hide. The side effect of someone wanting to just go as a tourist is insignificant compared to the humanitarian importance of preserving this corridor of departure.

A couple of reactions. (+) I _really_ liked the unedited interviews. The silence _between_ and _at the end of_ the questions speaks LOUDER than words. (-) As someone who teaches a language on YT, I was disappointed in the translated subtitles, which were about 70% accurate. Now, I _do_ understand that BOTH happened because you were trying to get the video out to us ASAP. So, on balance, it was worth it - THANK YOU 💙💙
Well, you could also help them by correcting the errors you've found and send it to them. not too hard to edit it I think and it might help them in future not to make the same mistake twice.
I'm a Russian girl who has been against this war since its very beginning and many of my loved ones including my boyfriend never supported the war too. I also never voted for Putin. Now I can't believe that all of this is happening. I can't stop crying and thinking of what I'm gonna do now. If my boyfriend goes to war, my life will be broken. All of our plans of getting married and having children will never come true. And I feel like most of the ordinary people's lives will inevitably be broken. I have never thought that I will live in a wartime. It feels surreal and desperate.
I also feel sorry for Ukrainian people who lost their homes and their loved ones during the war. This shouldn't have happened. It's so wrong.
I also feel responsible for the crimes of Russia. But there are so many people in Russia who are brainwashed by the propaganda and still believe what government tells them. And those who are against are scared to go for protests because they may be severely beaten by the police. Men who go for protests are forcefully taken by the police and sent to war. And we also realise that government doesn't care of our opinion and they're so much stronger than us. Most of us feel desperate and helpless.
I hope this war will come to the end as soon as possible and I wish that Ukrainian won. Let's stay strong during this tough times.

I think one should do at least as you do now. That is being against and oppose Russian aggression at least in ways that do not jeopardize your own safety. I think it is now every Russian duty to oppose the "military operation" within their courage now tolerate. You owe that to Ukrainians and to the World. Take care and do not get in trouble.
@@robertocorti9845 I watched different experts on war issues and most of them say that considering the modern war methods and tactics your chance to even try to surrender is minimal. Because in most cases you don't even get to see your "enemy". In most cases you just die from the rocket explosion or step on a bomb and die.
Moreover, according to the new Russian law all Russian surrenders are sentenced for 10 years in prison after they come back home.
This makes things much more complicated..

It makes me sick.... That dude from Lugansk will pick up his gun and fight Ukraine because he is now Russian if he has to, that other lad that sustained the war and said his brothers are who the oath and gov tells him they are and is fine with it... I couldn't watch it more, i don't know about the rest.... The Russians desirve fully what they get now. The cost of silence, of sitting comfty at home "this doesn't affect me personally so i sustain it" came back and it is biting from their own asses now. I think that only after another mobilisation, the total one will start, simply because those here died too, it will be only then when Russia will wake up, when more news is death and more coffins will arrive in every home.
Thank you for all the interviews over the past months. It’s been incredibly insightful, especially when comparing young and old, city dwellers and countryside people. What amazes me the most is how Russians tend to give very thought through, elaborate answers. Nearly philosophical. Quite unique to be frank.

They juggle on a platform of apathy, fear, sadness and looking away. If you then still want to express yourself your answer would create some philosophical flair.
It's the weird post soviet brainwash fighting the urge for freedom and simple living, I can see it in my parents eyes, they want to say this is simply crazy, but their tongue wont let those words slip out.
