      They are following their cult leader, brainwashed. Easier to not see reality so they avoid the shame and guilt that leader caused. Just a small note to your comment. Keyboards didn’t exist when Orwell wrote his book. More likely a typewriter or notebook but I agree with the image of that moment.

    Obviously, most Russians know and understand perfectly well what is going on. They are not stupid people.
    The problem is that those who support the war are encouraged by the state to do so loudly and aggressively, while those who are against, are repressed and scared and trying to not openly voice their minds. Nobody wants to be dragged to the nearest police station and get their ribs broken. Hence the general albeit muffled disapproval of the war in this video.

      @animatr0nic Рік тому +25

      @@Sc0pee Yes, Russia's young are bitter and cynical. They live under an oppressive regime, that thrives on negativity and strangles any free speech. "Yes, we are bad, but no one's better" is basically what KGB is promoting in society for years now. And the state will actually tolerate the harshest criticism, if the critic will vilify the west too. This basically dissipates any protest and puts those disgruntled into self isolating mode, where one has to hate everyone and everything, because otherwise the state that has informants virtually everywhere will have certain questions and nobody wants that.

But can we hope that what happened in Serbia in three years, happen in 30 years in Russia? One problem is that many of young, educated people will move abroad in the next few years. Exactly the important workforce for the next ten years, and this will have some impact on the whole sociaty and slow down the development. The sanctions will hit quite hard towards the end of the year (thinks a Russian economist living in Russia that I follow on UA-cam).

    Your interviews are showing a shift in Russian attitudes from earlier attitudes. Less denial. A bit more courage in people speaking their minds. Some of it no doubt is because of state media's ever increasing hostilities toward Ukraine which, quite frankly, I find shocking. Hopefully Russians too are equally shocked by such hatred toward neighboring countries. Your questions about Russians ultimately having to pay the price for rebuilding Ukraine is very thought-provoking. Russians need more of these questions to get them to think through the implications of invading foreign countries. Another thought-provoking question would be to ask Russians what they think of Putin likening his invasion of Ukraine to Peter The Great's invasions.

    • @afookingarcher7195

      Invading Ukraine for us Russians is to invade our own brothers. Even Chechnya could be considered just a distant cousin. But almost every ethnic Russian has ancestral or familial ties to Ukraine.
      Imagine if the US invaded Canada during the trucker protests. A special military operation designed to once again 'normalize' the trading lanes that were disturbed. Except instead of doing that, all major Canadian cities were bombed and thousands of civilians needlessly died. Then the government says it is illegal to mention or protest these atrocities.
      I think many people in the US would be silently outraged. I think it is possible that like Russia, many would not want to believe it. Others would wish to avoid this truth, as it is so shameful to confront.
      As a Russian here in the US, i think about these things a lot. I try to remember we are not all so different or complicated. This war will truly have no winners... This whole thing has burnt a hole in my heart. A terrible shame now lives there, as I'm certain it would for Americans in the scenario i proposed above.

    The cognitive dissonance defense mechanisms in the first few interviews are very strong. The people afraid to even answer or discuss the photos are very revealing of the fear they have of their own government.

    An Ukraine/American now used to live there but speaks Russian had a family member told to go work as security guard, Ukraine's leader put gun in his hand no training an told to war , he passed away with in 2 days getting shot . This is one example of why ukraine government is bad . Rest of world needs to stop supporting Ukraine's leader. This war has been going on 10 yrs or better . Only reason Russian invade so late was due to the sand an oil conflict Americans an Russian fought side by side in . It's wrong we sanctioned them an send Ukraine any help . Also our leaders son has been in Ukraine before invasion making money from them for war . I would like to see our president be reprimanded for his an his family involvement.

      The saddest part of it is deaths of innocent people, made by both sides, the example you described. Our world isn't black and white, everyone has a part of guilty for what's happening now.

    This is amazing and real. So well done! As a 66 year old American who has spoken to 1000s of other Americans ( and people all over the world) there is a common humanity in everyone who you interview. Everyone is in pain. No one really likes the war even when they support it! And they answer unanimously, Russians will pay. How utterly sad and on the other hand your video points to some kind of redemption I cannot explain. Keep up the great work!

      Funny thing is, most ukrainians didn't feel that way about the people of donbass and lugansk when they were beings slaughtered, if anything they praised their destruction, and for what? For freedom. All they wanted was the freedom to vote and all they got in return was ukrainian bullets,
      You just fail to realize ukraine started this war and they killed thousands and spent nearly a decade indiscriminately bombing donbass and lugansk despite the peace treaties.
      I dont blame you for what you never learned but you are all so ignorant as to the reality of the situation,
