  • Taking a bit of a different approach to the the second part of the South Shore Line series. In this video, we explore the South Shore between Gary and Michigan City... all during the Double Track NWI project. Primarily filmed during the early summer of 2023, we follow numerous diesel-led trains through deenergized construction zones as we work our way east, and make a few stops to take a look at progress on the project. For those interested, locations of each shot are listed in the comment section below.
    Enjoy, and thanks for watching!

Superb footage of those equipment moves! IMO the NICTD Geeps paired very well with the single level Sumitomo cars 💯

0:19 Is that a Pantograph on that Locomotive? Didn't know they were dual mode...

Hi, the Pantograph is a 'dummy' and is used for removing snow and ice from the wires, ahead of commuter trains.

You could mistake that locomotive for a electric locomotive lol if you don’t know what you’re looking for, nice job and great catch

Hi, that was great to watch thank you. I'll bet 1000 & 1001 have not had such regular running for a while. Whereabouts were passengers interchanged between Rail & Buses, please?

Thank you very much for your continued support, glad you enjoyed! While these scenes were shot and this entire portion of the line was shut down, busses would begin at Carroll Avenue Station and pick up passengers that were boarding there (or in the case of trains that began in South Bend vs. Michigan City, those boarding plus the train crew and passengers that would disembark the train). The busses would then stop at every station (Beverly Shores required a call ahead of time for busses to stop) until they arrived at the Gary Metro Center, and the same in the opposite direction. With the line now back in service between Michigan City and Dune Park, passengers from points east disembark the train there and get on the bus for the much shorter trip to Gary Metro Center, busses only stopping at Ogden Dunes and Miller.
That was a mouthful, but hopefully the info was helpful! Thanks again for watching!

I thought they were going to double track all the way to Michigan City IN but it doesn't look like it.
