A Railroad Resurrection: Hunting for Norfolk Southern SD70M-2s in 2023!
NON-NARRATED VERSION: ua-cam.com/video/y66CSE1qi_A/v-deo.html
In early 2023, Norfolk Southern began reactivating their remaining mothballed fleet of SD70M-2s, much to my (and many others) surprise. Hop along for the ride as we chase a few of these reactivated locomotives in local service across Northwest Indiana!

Ever since I began taking video seriously in May of 2022, the one thing I've wanted to cover the most (by far!) were Norfolk Southern's bottle trains between the steel plants at East Chicago and Riverdale. I touched on these briefly in my IHB East End video (...if you're new here, I'd highly advise watching that first for additional context to the layout of the railroad, etc.), but didn't get t...

Though regular use only ended roughly five years ago, and occasional use still exists today, the tracks along CSX's Whiting Spur have fallen into a rather depressing state as of late. They {Molten Steel Trains} should properly be titled: 'Molten Iron Trains.' The Treadwell bottles transport loads of liquid iron from the blast furnaces to the plant's basic oxygen shop where the iron is then made into steel; after combining it with various grades of steel scrap and fluxes.

    • @albertcarello619
      @albertcarello619 3 місяці тому

      @LoovesJf: Only the street running tracks are gone. First street running elimination was September 16, 1956 in East Chicago Indiana, the second the street running in downtown South Bend IN on July 7 1970, and finally in Michigan City IN on February 27 2023. Now this RAILROAD will look more like SEPTA REGIONAL ELECTRIC RAIL in Philadelphia. The GE 1Vs look similar to the South Shore Line's single level NIPPON SHARYNO cars .

    • @trtrproductions
      @trtrproductions 5 місяців тому

      Thank you very much! There is no set-in-stone schedule for these runs, but these trains are constantly in motion daily. I'm only a 10 minute drive from the IHB's Lakefront Yard, so when I was doing heavy handed chasing of these trains, I would start there at the marina and just wait around for the loads to leave. Monitoring the IHB East Dispatcher on Channel 25 (160.485) helps immensely too, as you'll hear the IHB jobs call to leave the Lakefront, and then you'll hear the NS crew request a restart as soon as they've boarded the train. If you start from the west, the Major Taylor bike trail in Riverdale provides a great view of the back of the plant, where you can see if an NS crew is still in there. It often takes them at least 2 hours from arriving before they're ready to leave with empties. That was a lot of talking lol! Hopefully I was clear enough... any other questions I'd be more than happy to help!

    There's no indication that there's anything in those bottle cars except air. Just video of empty cars being shuttled around mostly empty railroad yards. Are these the empty bottle cars I've heard about that are being melted down by Canadians and used to make electric cars in Manitoba? Are these bottle cars rare and on the verge of disappearing? Between the "empty" rolling stock and method of operation, I (personally) find these trains fascinating regardless of if you can see whether or not each car is loaded. This EMD wanted to be a GE! It didn't sound too good as it went by... Since that is a GP unit, it has no turbo, so it can't be a blown turbo. I wonder, was there a loading problem, or a failing bearing? Black smoke is usually from over-fueling or bogging down the engine too much. Also, it's smoking out both exhaust stacks, so it's not like a failure in just one cylinder.
