The Roller Coaster Railroad: Freight Trains on the South Shore Line

- In this video presentation, we follow the the South Shore Line in search of hard working Traction Orange GP38-2s plying the rails of America's Last Interurban. We'll see lots of steel traffic, loaded coal trains, and other heavy trains as they navigate the extreme grades and curves only found on the South Shore.
On my last project, it was suggested that I include a map of the railroad as we follow it. Because of the nonlinear nature of this video vs. the IHB one, I did not do so. However, a FANTASTIC resource exists that includes a scrolling map of the entire railroad, complete with Double Track NWI additions. I highly recommend you use it while watching to keep track of where we are - I myself used it heavily while writing the script:
southshore.railfan.net/ss-fram...
And per the usual, I sympathize with those who just want to hear pure uncut EMD noise. An unnarrated version of the video can be found here:

Thanks for watching!
The Much Too Long Creator's Note:
I've finally amassed a large enough video library that I have several more projects that can be completed today if I tried. As such, I'm planning on (finally) beginning a regular upload schedule for the time being... be on the look out for a new video every other Friday from this point forward! - Авто та транспорт
Great railroad! Hoping Gary makes a comeback...born there in 67'...
SSF roster is all one make/model based on your description. Makes sense as a fleet operator ya know the intricacies and can maintain consistency in knowledge to repair. Bravo South Shore Freight!!
Fantastic video, a work of art. I visited Chicago (amongst other places) for a railfanning trip from the UK back in 2022, and this has definitely made me fancy a return trip! Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to seeing your next videos!
Thank you very much Tom, that means a lot! I always love reading comments from across the pond, goes to show what a unique railroad this is. And again, thank you for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed!
This has to be one the best CSS videos out there!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks! The CSS never fails to put on a good show.
This video is insane, I never knew the CSS existed outside of some smalltown trackage and streetrunning, this has definitely made me add the CSS to my bucket list.
Had to make a post on my channel about it... hopefully I bring in some new viewers.
Took me a while to see this for whatever reason... thank you so much, both for watching and the plug! The streetrunning is now gone but the South Shore will (at least to me) always carry a unique charm no other operation will ever match.
Superb quality and narration! Probably one of the best CSS videos to date.
Thank you so much! That means a lot - I still struggle with having any confidence in my narrating so hearing that others didn't mind it makes me feel a lot better. Glad you enjoyed!
Outstanding!
Thank you very much, Steven! Glad you enjoyed!
Hi, from the CSS&SB + IHB in the UK. This has been just Fantastic to watch. I recall after you made the IHB video, you mentioned being busy with work. It was good to see Cleveland Cliffs Steel, Michigan Lake Shore RR and Burnham Yard. Thank you for taking the time to film, edit and post this video, I have enjoyed every second of it. Also, for braving the elements. Please keep these videos coming, they are worth every moment.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm so thrilled you got to see this... you were the first one to request the South Shore on my IHB video, so thank YOU for the push to make this! As I stated above, reading comments like these truly make it all the more worth it, and I appreciate that!
@@trtrproductionsI just have 3 questions Why does the South Shore Freight only have GE38-2 Models, and why do their Horns sound different to the others such as CSX, BNSF, and Union Pacific, and why travel at like 20 miles per hour???
@@philipmancera2505 Most of their GP38s were delivered new to them in the early 1980s… so it’s mainly a case of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The units are, for the most part, equipped with less-common Leslie RS3L air horns, which are becoming quite rare on Class 1s these days. Max speed for freight is 35mph across the entire railroad, but at the time of recording most of the footage in this video, the Double Track project was ongoing with multiple speed restrictions in place.
Awesome and amazing video
That means a lot! Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed!
I think I have found my new favorite channel! Seriously great work! It is so cool to see Burnham Yard! ;) Thanks for taking the time to make this video. 🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
😂 Thanks for watching Meg! Glad you have something to fall asleep to now...
Amazing stuff! Really well documented and well made!
You may actually be one of the first people to bother taking pictures of the LMIC since they repainted their units lol
Thanks Joey, I'm glad you enjoyed it! If only the LMI guys were switching, or literally anything else... I don't know if I've ever passed this spot driving down 12 and they were actually moving lol!
Aweasome Video! Cant wait for the next one, wonder what it'll be.
Thank you so much, and I'm stoked there's people already looking forward to the next one! A trailer will be released on Friday... keep your eyes peeled!
Now this is awesome, great work!
Thank you for watching Sam! Glad you enjoyed it man.
awesome video 🚅🚋🚋
Thanks for watching, Brian! I appreciate that!
Another incredible video! I appreciate all the time and effort that went into making this. Can't wait for the next one!!
Thank you so much, Ryan! Comments like these make my day... and certainly make the whole process all the more worthwhile! Glad you enjoyed!
Outstanding video!
Thank you, Kevin! I appreciate that! Love your footage of the South Shore as well... nothing beats a day of chasing the railroad up and down Highway 12!
With double tracking completed to Michigan City it will be now possible to schedule more freight trains in both directions at the same time.
This is a fantastic video. You have chronicled the modern South Shore in a manner never done before. Thank you for your stellar effort as this is a fascinating railroad that for the most part paid minimal attention. I am a huge South Shore fan that grew up with it in Hegewisch in the 70’s. So much so that I have modeled it loosely in Nscale (I have a few videos if you check my channel if interested). Can’t wait for the next installment!
Reading this made my day, thank you so much for watching - I'm glad you enjoyed it! And from one N scaler to another, I am EXTREMELY impressed with your modeling skills... some of the neatest models I've ever seen with a great looking layout to boot! Huge kudos to your own efforts!
Coal has always been a major commodity hauled by South Shore Freight for many years.
I think you should make a video on the Belshaw Subdivision next!!
My breakout musical A Tragedy on Friendship Hill comes first, but then maybe!
Sometime this spring i will be riding the south shore to Hudson lake do you know what css freights run in that area? If so what time should i expect to see them
What camera did you film this with?
My go to is a JVC GY-HM170U. A challenging camera to learn, but once you do it's quite the workhorse.
🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃👍
Thank you for watching, Tom! Glad you enjoyed!
What are those platforms for that have been added over the cabs? Very make shift modification must have a special purpose. Thnx!
Tom! Those are brackets that house Positive Train Control equipment, they have been a staple of the CSS roster for about five years now. Lots of rail photographers complain about them, but I like the look myself!
Do you know when AF8 runs to New Carlisle, IN?
New Carlisle work is done by the AF3 crew. Unfortunately outside of knowing the crew assignment I'm not sure which days of the week they go east as the same job also works the Amtrak Michigan Line a few days out of the week. In any case it -should- be midmorning heading out that way, midafternoon coming back. Good luck, sorry I couldn't be more helpful! I am not as familiar with the east end of the railroad as I am the west...
Electrification ???
