@@drmatthewhorkey I bought the 2019 en primeur, and some more after having popped the first bottle, including a bunch of magnums to be enjoyed when I'm retired.
For that price point in the Japanese market I'd also go Chilean due to the well known cost performance, favourable trade conditions between the two countries, and weakness of the Yen. Casillero del Diablo Reserva - one of the largest production wines on Earth - is a solid choice you can find everywhere (and sub USD10, not sub USD25!). I do think there is an emerging gap in the market between cheap and expensive for this grape variety as mid priced wines that may have fit the description have gotten more expensive this past few years.
One of the best cabs I've had in the last couple of years was Australian - Xanadu, from Margaret River. Not sure of the price, but I think it was on sale for less than 30 US$. Really outstanding for that price.
Matt, hey there. Appreciate this tasting as variability is significant at this price point. One I’ve had good luck with in the $25 range is the Buehler Cabernet. Their estate version is $10 more but both punch above their price point.
Great example of Australian cab that can age with the screw cap 😊! Miss a example of a Chilean CS !! In this price point they use to deliver great results ! Cheers !
Chile makes some really good wines at that price point as does Argentina. I´m also not surprised the Australian wine performed well! The US seems to be quite an expensive place to make wine to get great Cab at that price.
one of the best cabs i've had for under 25 is dry creek vineyard's. idk how much it is outside of my market, but where i live it is $20 and a must buy. In fact, their whole line is some of the most consistent quality i've seen from an affordable brand.
I like Josh Cellar's Cabernet, for the price it is actually quite decent. When it's on Total Wines Deal app at 9.99, I usually buy 1/2 a case. I good value wine when I don't feel like opening one of my expensive wines.
The issue is with some of these wines is the oak or vanilla. Oak and vanilla is very nice on the palate but it hides the fruit.Thats why I have been avoiding Cheaper California Cabernet Sauvignon.
I found a 2019 Vinakoper Cabernet Sauvignon from Slovenia for $6.99 and it wasn't bad at all for the price. Also found their Merlot for the same price. Both seemed to represent the grape varieties well especially for that low price.
@@drmatthewhorkey I also got that one for $6.99 and I haven't opened the bottle yet! That is very good to know that, thanks. When I see an odd grape variety I just have to buy it especially for a low price! I bought all three at a grocery store for $6.99 each.
Great review, highlights that it's not that easy to find decent Cab at low prices. As you said, there is a good value in cheap Bordeaux, I am often positively surprised there. And the best value for money, in a generic sense, is probably in Argentina. A lot depends on taste, personally I really don't like oaky wines in general, especially Cab and Chardonnay. The Barra looks interesting, would love to try that one.
I allmost only drink cabernet sauvignon from haut medoc in France. But some aussie cabernet/shiraz blends I like. Few California cabernets too. Some Italian super Tuscan also. And chile. Which is where you get most value for money cabernet sauvignons.
Thank you for posting your video. I have tasted both the Josh and the Joel Gott Cabernet's and liked them. The Barra is not available on the east coast.
I don’t have a refined, nose in the air palette. I find the Aldi Cab a very good one. I’ve had a few Cab’s too. I drink bourbon, scotch and aged tequila too. Bring on the oak and vanilla pansy!
Well, the Josh Cab reserve keeps flying off the shelves so much so that the price has risen by about 25% in a month. I guess people are into crap.@@joe-zp7ge
I always found Josh and Joel Gott Cabernet Sauvignons to be a very "pleasant" wine. If I saw the wine at a party I would certainly be content. Hey Matthew, what do you know about the 2014 Padis, Cabernet Sauvignon? I bought two bottles at for $49 a piece.
Slightly over budget and i dont know how it retails in the USA but Chateau Batailley was still about 30usd equivalent a bottle en premieur last year. Once its retail its double that but i think its good enough to justify buying a case or two if you can store them. Always delivers a good representation of proper pauillac and at a low price (relatively)
I’d like to signal the “Cabernet - Istrice, Elena Walch”. It’s a nice blend of cab sauv and a smole quantity of franc from the alto adige region in italy that in my opinion offers great value for the money.
its amazing how many people drink josh and joel gott. if people would just go to a reputable wine store they could find a much better value from spain, chile, argentina, or australia. a decent cab today and i say decent runs 50.00 north. i have seen some chiantis between 25 and 30 that are pretty good. its the same with the pinots.... 35 north.
lifes too short to waste your palate on a bad glass of wine. wife and i walked out of a restaraunt two nights ago because the wine list was contemptible.
You can get some fairly awesome Cabernet Sauvignon from Moldova sub $15. As with many things, you can't just assume that any Cabernet will be awesome, so you can end up drinking some less good wines to find the gems.
Pretty surprising results to me. I have more or less abandoned Cab. Sauv. at this price point. I used to buy Daou’s entry level Cab., but even that has become less appealing (could be my preferences evolving, not necessarily the wine changing for the worse).
I’m not a great fan of Cabernet Sauvignon as it is too tannic for my GI tract. But Australia makes some great ones in Coonawarra, Margaret River and the Pyrenees region of Victoria. Pass me the Chambolle Musigny please 🤣
I'm sure they exist but I don't think of Cabs when it comes to "value" wines. They're either cheap and bad or good and expensive. I suppose the many Bordeaux blends you find in France for 10-25 euros come close but they're usually unavailable internationally.
There are plenty of solid Bordeauxs in that price range in the USA but I didn’t include them here bc a lot of them generally use less CS than more expensive ones
I was worried the Josh was the best ;). I'm off the socials right now, but I've heard they're hitting social media hard and some industry people are firing back. Cool flight though.
Speaking of cost of packaging, I do find it a shame that reusing the glass is as much of a pain point as it is. I can only save so many 750 ml bottles in my brewing equipment. I saved 12 light green burgundy bottles and they take up quite a bit of room in my small closet shelves.
Totally and I'm a big fan of yours, but isn't accessibility part of them being alternatives? That accessibility is the selling point of the wines in markets. @@drmatthewhorkey
Cabs are my favorite wine and was first introduced with Josh. Since watching your videos, I’ve definitely opened up to different varieties especially Bordeaux. I try to get bottles that you recommend.
I love Napa Cab. But they are pricing themselves out. There are cheaper Napa Cab labels but they almost always lack that thing, that "background noise" that just signals to me that I have a Napa Cab in my glass. I have not yet been able to express in words what I really mean. I did identify a Napa Cab in a blind tasting of twelve wines very recently. I know what I am talking about but I just haven't been able to explain it in words, sorry.

Thanks, Dr. Horkey -- excellent segment and a valuable service for your viewers. At the ~$20 price point I've found some very enjoyable Cabs from Paso Robles (California Central Coast): Austin from Austin Hope, Justin, and DAOU. Check them out and let us know what you think.
Kinda disappointing in a way. When I started off in wine 37 years ago CS was cheap and all over the place and I guess it was taken for granted. You could buy great stuff for these prices. I'm talking about French CS because that was it. California wasn't a thing and it still isn't a thing in most of the Old World. The issue of Cab has become insane today. I agree there is value but it's not outside the region of production. WT
well done. I am so glad i dont care for cab/s. You will be hard pressed to beat Spanish, portugese, italian wines under $20. even right bank Bordeauxs offer great value compared to napa etc. I gave up on american wines a few years back and am much happier and have more money in my pocket. This whole cab sauv crap is just so much marketing to americans who wanted a big fruity wine and were told merlot is de classe. drink old world wines and really explore interesting varietals i say.
