  • I take a look at Klean Strip Concrete & Metal Prep AND Ospho rust treatment products. Ospho is twice the price. Is it worth buying the more expensive Opsho? Both products are good for converting the rust into Iron Phosphate and preparing your projects for painting.

    If you dilute the Kleen Strip 50:50 or 1:2 with water, it doesn’t suds/bubble up when applied with a brush and it still etches the metal and neutralizes surface rust. The instructions on the side suggest diluting it for metal prep work.

    Many others use the Klean Strip in auto restorations from inside doors to down the "A" pillars, rockers, sail panels and catch with plastic storage containers. The Ospho has wetting agents added, according to the MSDS, so this to keep wet. If using Klean-Strip not apply and let dry. Scrub with a Scotch-Brite if able. Use a lint free towel like (Kimberly-Clark Wyp-All L40. Before painting, hang new tack rags to air dry a little as to not transfer imbedded waxy product into primed surface. Store in a coffee can with lid & cover. Mark on bright masking tape for reuse. Two things, don't push hard and used compressed air. Many like Evercoat use the Wyp-All to clean the panel gently with isopropyl w/air for last chance dust catcher. Unlike water, it won't soak into as Evercoat as most use additives to stop this, water will show a dark spot. Only compressed air and a gently heat gun action. A spot spray of epoxy with create a barrier sealing filler of bare metal that sands thru.
    I am all for anything that kills rust. Rinse, dry with towel before (Heated air and leaf blower) but on a vehicle, after dry, wipe it an solvent based wax & grease remover (Not water based) then spray two good coats your favorite 1:1 mix epoxy. Just read the SDS as some have an induction time and others don't. But that seals it off from any future moisture as it acts like plastic wrap. If paint ready, read or call for epoxy use as 10% of a high quality urethane reducer will help it lay smooth just before color depending on "P" sheet.
    I have a cavity pressure pot with several hoses that have different tips so it can be spray that way if enclosed. Eastwood sells cavity wax but that has to be reapplied depending on use. Spray into door / rocker drain holes to make sure they are not welded or not stamped.
    Wether Ospho or metal prep, a plastic tent can-be tented to capture, then run thru again because it doesn't go bad using it once or twice. Use it until the rust quits turning black! It's good and even at tiny Biden dollars cost is reasonable, compared to hamburger, plywood, tires or gas.

    This is a response to a commenter below who pointed out that only the Ospho has the zinc dichromate. __ I was wondering about the strength of the phosphoric acid solution and didn't think about other such ingredients. I figured if vinegar is sold in 5%, 6% and 30% strength solutions then phosphoric acid solutions should also list their strength. But you showed me that for working on my truck frame there are more important considerations. Thanks. I'll be using Ospho and now I'll understand why I'm paying more. I just read the Klean Strip label more carefully. It does say it is a prep for priming and painting by REMOVING the rust but it doesn't say anything about converting the rust into an inert form that blocks out the oxygen and prevents future rusting. I guess they're counting on the metal being primered and topcoated to do that. A truck frame takes a lot more abuse than a planter or decorative item so I'd like that rust conversion factor, too.

    Does Klean Strip Concrete & Metal Prep leave behind some latex or acrylic coating? Is there a rust converter that only uses acid? Seems like some latex coating will negate the ability to use a primer. Ultimately, you're limited to the adhesion of that latex or acrylic.

I did my Town Car frame inside with Eastwood internal frame coating with 360 degree nozzle. Love and highly recommend. Outside knock off heavy if there, mine wasn't. Light wire brush, degrease, Ospho, acetone or 99% alcohol, reducer etc. CarRep epoxy then whatever else or nothing. Very happy and did in drive way. Still use that can I had left over on another small parts. Still works great. No wasted money, time, worries.

      @@STBRetired1 I've been using Ospho for a long time. Here's what I did to test it. As you know muffler clamps get real bad abuse, don't have a rust proof coating of any kind and are under the vehicle where they get all kinds of weather. I took a few and used Muratic acid, kleen strip and Ospho. The muratic works great but also eats steel if not taken out in 20-30 min max. Kleen strip removed rust but took alot longer, Ospho converted and worked great. So if I have bad rust I knock off flakes and chunks, as hitting with hammer and it falls off, air chisel etc. Then I use the muratic to remove the rust then rinse, then ospho to seal it. Still shiny and new looking months later. Only detail is if using epoxy or anything other than rustoleum type oil based coating, you have to rewet the Ospho, let set for 4 min, then rinse with water, water and baking soda etc. If not the coating will have adherence issues.

  • @borna430

    very misleading to say save a few $ and use Kleen metal prep. Ospho has Sodium dichromate which prevent further rusting and seal the metal. Specially when you are restoring a classic cars. So the extra $ you play for Ospho pays very well. However if you have a clean metal and you want to prep it use kleen.

    • @AlleyPicked
      @AlleyPicked  Рік тому

      I see what you are saying. The key ingredient in both products is the phosporic acid which converts the rust. The sodium dichromate is a rust inhibitor. Without doing studies between the 2, it would be hard to say how exactly how much the dichromate additive actually matters. If I use Klean strip and the rust converts to iron and then I paint it using rustoleum, which also includes a rust inhibitor, how much if any difference would there be? I have used both products for a couple years and as long as I paint after, I have not see the rust return. Thanks for your input.

    • @borna430
      @borna430 Рік тому

      @@AlleyPicked
      Here is an example: Take two pieces of rust-free metal so that they can be observed better. Apply Ospho on one piece and let it dry overnight. Use Kleen on the other piece and let it dry overnight as well.
      The next day, try to neutralize the Ospho on the piece where you applied Ospho by applying more Ospho. Rub it with a green pad and wait for 5 minutes, then rinse it thoroughly with water and immediately dry it.
      You will notice that the metal changed color slightly to a bluish hue with a hint of copper-tan color. This change indicates the rust-inhibiting property of Ospho and zinc coating.
      Repeat the same procedure with Kleen and you won't observe the same change, meaning it does not protect the metal.
      Therefore, while both products contain phosphoric acid to remove and/or convert rust, Ospho provides protection to the metal from further rusting for 5 to 6 months.
