You need to see him in the ‘Night Manager’ as the baddie. Superb actor
Truth
Hugh is one of my favourite British actors. Alot of people know him from Blackadder but I loved him best in House and Jeeves and Wooster. Two very different roles
wotto bertie
With S Fry.
Hugh Laurie plays the piano brilliantly he was in the Cambridge rowing team and had a Television show on British tv with Stephen Fry he is ridiculously talented and he is funny❤
He played here in Argentina for his second album. Both he and his band sounded amazing. He even danced tango on stage. 🙌
Would like to have seen that.
Wow
I didn't know Hugh Laurie could sing either. This is completely new to me. And Simon's a New Zealander or I'll eat my hat.
Yes he has a brilliant jazz album out
Defo a Kiwi, Ozzie’s don’t wear “Jandals”😂
Yeah I was gonna say he sounded more NZ to me, but I ain’t no expert but others have commented so I’m giving myself a pass lol…
✌️❤️🏴🇬🇧🏳️🌈🇳🇿
Simon's a Kiwi all day long.
"When I was tin..."
They hang out their washing with sex pigs.
I remember hearing Hugh say that on HOUSE he would change his walking stick and limp from one side to another to see if anyone would notice 😆
You were close, Joel, but the last guy in the red chair was actually a New Zealander -- it's all in the vowels! 😄
Yes definitely, as an Aussie I could hear his New Zealand accent as soon as he started talking. Aussie and Kiwi accents must sound the same to Americans.
I just came to make sure someone told him he’s a kiwi not an Ozzie lol
And by the use of the word “jandals” 🩴 🩴
@@bernadettelanders7306 It's like calling a Canadian accent American, to Americans and Canadians it's as obvious as we hear the Kiwi accent, or vice versa.
I loved that he was throwing in NZ slang like jandals & Ute (that one's Aussie too obvs) once he realised he was making them laugh with the accent. He will have 100% been a 'set up' because Graham always struggles/loves stories from New Zealanders.
Hugh Laurie is also a fine pianist and went to Cambridge on a rowing scholarship. If you want an hilarious GN with him, watch the one with Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson and Robert Downey Jr. You'll weep with laughter.
You would also like Hugh Laurie in House....... not a really comic role but just the subtle hidden humour in realtion to the medical system. A great interview with him and demo of his musical ability.... Hugh is not only the "idiot in black adder" as you put it there is a lot more to this great guy
I loved him in House
Me too
My 17 year old daughter loves House, she almost lost her mind though when I told her he isn't American 😂
Great they got a British actor to play a character they wanted an American actor for
I like the fact that the NZ man at the end was completely oblivious to the fact that the others couldn’t understand half of what he was saying
Hugh is also a writer, a very smart and well educated man
Rowed for Cambridge..
Very talented. I respect him. Even people who don’t personally like that genre of music can respect his talent 👏🏻
That was 100% New Zealander at the end. The key to picking the difference in accent is often the "i" sound. Kiwis say "fush and chups". Once you know that, its usually not too hard to pick the difference. He also referred to jandals, which I believe are flip flops or thongs, depending on where you are from.
E's give them away as well as in 'sivin' instead of 'seven
@@joyfulzero853 True, but I was saving that for class Kiwi 102 Bru 😁
@@joyfulzero853 or "I'm going to stain my dick" for "I am going to stain my deck."
@@MrNathanDJNGGiles They say it almost day in their DIY stores; over here they get some very strange looks in B&Q
That’s such a stereotype “fush” 😂 Aussie version kinda like “fiieeesh”
There's a scene in House where the doctors sing karaoke in a bar, "Midnight Train to Georgia". Rich meaty voices; Hugh Laurie and Jesse Spencer too. You begin to realise just how multi-talented these top end actors are. There are numerous other scenes where House plays blues on his piano. I didn't know he could play the guitar too.
Found it, thanks, it's brilliant.

I've seen quite a few Hollywood celebs say that Hugh is infuriating simply for the fact that he is so talented and can do pretty much anything 😂
Hugh has a huge back catalogue of work that it would be worth investigating. He and Stephen Fry have been best buddies since university (introduced by Emma Thompson) and have worked together on numerous projects. Their sketch shows 'Fry and Laurie' were huge hits. They also did versions of the 'Jeeves and Wooster' stories which I think will remain unbeatable. If you've not seen 'House' you should give an episode or two a whirl, just to see a very different side to Hugh.
That Cambridge university group made great movie together in 1992 called Peter's Friends.
Fry and Laurie was one of my favourite comedy shows ever.
He sings, he plays, he's amazing.
If you look at Fry and Laurie (the show he did in the 80s with Stephen Fry) you’ll see his musicianship. The best one ever IMO is “Mystery”. Just classic. Our entire family still pronounces January differently as a result 😂
I immediately thought of "Mystery"! Hilarious 😂
My favourite was "Too Long, Johnny" 🤣
Oh brilliant, a bit of Fry and Laurie was a favourite 😊
Very versatile - comedy actor, serious actor, musician... he managed to mix a little music into both "Fry and Laurie" and his (excellent) work in "House".Great pianist.Simon is definitely a fellow New Zealander (with a VERY strong accent!) (ute= flat-bed truck; jandals= flip-flops). If you haven't already, you should check out the Graham Norton episode with Bill Murray, Matt Damon, and Hugh Bonneville - absolutely hilarious!
Definite Kiwi as you say.
@@kingy002 Greetings from Dunedin :)
The guy in the red chair ( Simon) at 14:42 is Kiwi, not Aussi. That is a very broad New Zealand accent.
A Budgerigar is an Australian bird commonly known as a Budgie. They are kept by people around the world as pets and have been bred to within an inch of their lives since been discovered here 200 years ago. They form some of the largest flocks of birds in the world, mostly over our deserts.
And Simon, in the Red Chair? As an Aussie I picked him as a Kiwi the minute he opened his mouth!
You should compare the NZ and Australian accents. They are similar but, even to my Aussie ear. The Kiwis and South African accents have similarities that we in Australia don’t share.
Kiwi here, yes, that was so Kiwi it was cringe 🤭🤭
Certainly south of the Fush line
My sister-in-law in a Kiwi. Can pick our cousins across the water a mile away 😊
Yeah I have more trouble differentiating between Kiwis and South Africans, they're much more similar than Aussies are to kiwis as far as accents go.
Hugh Laurie plays Dr House in the US medical drama series 'House'. Check out a clip to see his American accent.
we know!
Graham Norton always gives New Zealanders a hard time at every opportunity, especially when they appear in the Red Chair. By saying he was from East Putney he avoided Graham mocking him about his nationality before he started speaking
The guy in the Red Chair was from New Zealand. 🙂
Hugh is a wonderful musician. If you ever get the chance to see him perform live, don't pass it up.
Yes, he’s a musician. And a damn good one.
Yea, nah. The guy Simon in the red chair is from New Zealand.
Have a look at Jeeves and Wooster where he and Stephen Fry play the eponymous pair. He often gets on to the piano there and plays old 20s and 30s numbers.
I had no idea Hugh Laurie was a musician either!
Love your impression of Graham Norton's blurted outro and tv commercials' 'small print' :)
Old mate in the red chair that sounded Australian was a Kiwi! The moment he mentioned jandals that gave it away. We call them thongs, you Americans call them flip-flops
I went to see him live when he toured New Zealand. He was wonderful! The band was incredible and I have two albums. Gonna go listen to them now. Bill Murray went musical too, and I saw him a few years ago too - not blues, more classical. That was weird but good! I have to respect these creatives have reached a place in their careers that they can take some risks and play with what they really want to do and spring off their earlier fame and tour as far away as New Zealand :)
They also have the money to branch out whereas the average person can't afford to do that in any great way. Good comment though.
He’s just talented, smart and so versatile.
In the later series of House, Hugh Laurie often ends the episode as Dr House reflectively playing music on the piano or guitar while alone at home. He plays all styles of music, classical, jazz, blues, pop. Joel, you should really see some episodes of House, even if it’s not for a reaction but just for your own entertainment. Medical drama sprinkled with dark humour - some of the best television that exists.
I had no idea he sang, especially American style. This is is biggest shock since Meryl Streep playing British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
He plays a mean piano. I'm so amazed to find an American who doesn't watch House!!!
Watch him in a crime thriller called The Night Manager, he is not the lead role, but is a very menacing `mafia' type character, and plays it very well. It`s a good story anyway. Olivia Coleman is in it too and is very pregnant in real life in it.
That guy was a New Zealander not an Australian
I went to see one of his first concerts in the unity chappel in london. Gotta be a good decade ago plus now. Small 200 capacity Audience max and the front row was the who’s who of comedy royalty. And I went on to see him perform with the amazing copper bottom band with Gaby Moreno and Sista Jean McClean . Such good times. I wish he’d preform again.
He's a very good friend of Stephen Fry who is also seriously multi-talented.
Australian and New Zealanders have the greatest stories
Huge Talent! His best musical work can be seen in 'Jeeves and Wooster' though 😇
As you like Stephen Fry, you should look at some of the series called A Bit of Fry and Laurie, a series of comedy sketches which aired between 1987 and 95. The two met while at Cambridge in 1980, with Emma Thompson as a mutual friend. Laurie is an Old Etonian and took his degree in Archeology & Anthropology. Fry's is in English Literature, and Thompson has a Masters in English.
You should check out "House" the series with Hugh Laurie. It's a great series. Just for your enjoyment. No need to do reaction unless you want. Great reaction. Love Graham!!!
How sweet that you should say, "This man is an artist, too?… I just thought that he was an actor." Well, an actor IS an artist already, because acting IS an art. I am an actor AND a poet, myself; and yet so many people are astonished that "Oh, you're not JUST an actor? You do something else as well?!" Yep, we do not all have a single allotment. • And 'budgie' is simply an abbreviation for a budgerigar.
You should definitely watch some full episodes of Graham Norton - they are great fun.
Hugh Laurie has an amazing voice, I've seen him play piano, he is a creative blues musician with a huge English humour background! Sir Tony Robinson, "Baldrick" is a great world historian too! 😂 Hugh's a friend of Stephen Fry, etc!! 👍🤗 The guy is from New Zealand, they use "U" instead of "I"! 😄
Oh this is Stephen Fry's partner in comedy. They got their first TV show together back in, I want to say it was the 80's, a sketch show called "A Bit Of Fry & Laurie".
Hugh is lovely. Talented, humble, funny and so intelligent.
Ah Joel, you're finally getting around to watching The League of Gentlemen. Whatever you do pretend you're "local", especially when visiting the shop!
I watch house and didn't realise it was Hugh until I read the credits, I just thought it was an American actor.
Guy in red chair was putting on a New Zealand accent.
You should do the red chair reactions , so funny 😅
The last guy in the chair was a New Zealander using heaps of NZ idioms. Different from Australia.
As much as I loved him as Prince George in the 3rd, he was brilliant as George in the 4th Season. Also, what a moment in Drag Herstory.
Oh yeah, hugh laurie is not only a great actor but also a fantastic musician ❤
He's a great jazz singer.
I loved Fry & Laurie in "Jeeves and Wooster".
Jeeves and Wooster is excellent, Set in the UK and the US in an unspecified period between the late 1920s and the 1930s, the series starred Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster, an affable young gentleman and member of the idle rich, and Stephen Fry as Jeeves, his highly intelligent and competent valet.
Last dude was from New Zealand not Aussie. I'll be honest I only clicked bc I knew Robert Pattinson was here!! Sexiest dude. He's batman, Edward in Twilight, Cedrig in Harry Potter. That's my man
The Graham Norton Show is must watch TV, He's an Amazing Interviewer! lets the guests talk unlike Another Chat Show host in UK who thinks it's all about him!!
Great fun Joel. Hugh is certainly talented!! Have a wonderful weekend everyone. John in Canada
You sound like a warm character John. Have a good one yourself.
Just think of the films he can do, I'm sure there are famous blues singers that need their stories told ;-)
I recommend "Hugh reads out 57 thank you notes on Colbert" ;-)
Hugh has demonstrated his musical talent for many hears so not news for many of us. Check out his Celebration Of New Orleans Blues to showcase some of his talent at the piano. He is all rounder comedian, actor and musician.
When someone says "tin" and they mean the word 10, you know they're a Kiwi.
Like how the kiwis say - fish and chips , in a funny way
Super bowl can't wait we are all watching it. Arizona we are watching
Joel, you should react to Stephen Frye and Hugh Laurie Duo comedy! They are best friends!
He was fabulous as Bertie Wooster.
The guy from Putney on the red chair was from New Zealand. The use of the word, "Jandals" was the giveaway. :)
Yes, Simon is a New Zealander
Multitalented Brits? Shocker! 🤣
Simon isn't from Australia, he is from New Zealand.
Clearly a Kiwi accent - funnier than an Australian one
A budgie (short for budgerigar) is a type of parakeet.
Pretty sure Simon is a kiwi, we don't do the vowels like that in Aus.
Love his talent.
I went to his show in Manchester he was brilliant and is a very talented pianist
Graham Norton is my happy place lol. I would love to see more of you reacting to his shows :)
Btw, we Germans say "Booo" too. 😅 I don't know what happened there at the train station, but that's not typical.
LOVE HIM ,
Man i miss House
You should watch more of Graham Norton his shows are very entertaining.
You should watch Jeeves and Wooster with Hugh and Stephen fry it's brilliant
The whole format of the show is that they have an Opening Monologue, the main chat and a Musical Performance.
You've GOT to check out the songs he wrote and played in "A bit of Fry and Laurie"!!!
They're hilarous. Also his piano playing in Jeeves and Wooster
The guy is a 'Kiwi' (New Zealander) they are a dead-giveaway! You can't mistake the accent.
Jeeves and Wooster is a blast. It often features Hugh Laurie playing the piano and singing and its all on UA-cam too.
Morning Joel I have been waiting for you to show some of the Red chair its brilliant have a good day 😂
PS that second red chair was definitely a Kiwi (NZ!) 🤭
He ist a brill actor, comedian, musician and author.
A budgie here in America is called a parakeet
Don't know if you've seen him in 'House' playing an American doctor? But that, Black Adder, and his music show his full versatility, very impressive career
Hugh and his friend Sephen Fry are stunningly talented. The met while at Cambridge University which is one of the two top educational institutions in the UK. You have to be ultra intelligent just to get in.
Hugh Laurie was great as the miserable but brillianr doctor in House tv series plus he was a graduate of the exclusive Eton Boarding School in the UK where Tom Hiddleson went.
Big props to Simon who was DEDICATED to finishing his story. Also, TV Shows always have a chaotic Outro.
That was my first time hearing Hugh sing too, I actually really like track!!
Its worth seeing him in Jeeves And Wooster... classic pg. Wodehouse with steven Fry as Jeeves
Hugh Laurie is a very talented guy all round: He went to Ofxord University; was in Not the Nine O'clock News; He wrote a very funny novel - The Gun Seller, I recommend you read it; He had a sketch programme with Stephen Fry called a bit of Fry and Laurie, amongst other things
I suppose you're a bit too young to remember the show House. It's an American show, and he was spectacular in it. Apparently when he auditioned, the casting director thought Hugh was an undiscovered American talent because he did the American accent so well they didn't know he was British. Even though it's an American show, you should definitely watch it.
Not to be rude but Blackadder is decades older and he knows him from that, even my 17 year old daughter knows the show House and it's one of her favourites. Kids and young people do watch older shows you know
@@jackwhitbread4583 Absolutely, he's done Blackadder reactions, so that's a bit different. I was just saying he's unlikely to remember House from when it was originally on, so unless he's made an effort to watch it, he may not have realized Hugh was also on it. I wasn't meant in any derogatory way.
Graham Norton appears to be another character that's known worldwide these days, his show seems to be shown everywhere (see wiki) - One of his earliest appearances on tv was on Father Ted as the memorably excrutiating Father Noel Furlong, some 25 years back.
Father Noel was great!
Nice to know you’re reacting to episodes of Graham Norton again.
Yeah, I don't think you can go wrong with reacting to Graham Norton tbh.
Joel , see if you can find any of "Jeeves and Wooster " with Fry and Laurie to react too , absolutely brilliant .🇬🇧
Yes, 'Jeeves & Wooster' was perfect casting for both Fry & Laurie, but also (as per the photo shown), Hugh Laurie sang a few times in the episodes, although obviously in 'Bertie character' and for the period... 👍
Am I the only one who has to put my volume up full on Joel's channel?
The strangest thing to me is seeing him sing in an American accent. I assumed he would use his real accent.
