It's not a sitcom, but that's kind of what Conan ended up doing with his quarantine shows, and it's really funny. He delivers his jokes to just one guy. If you don't watch Conan though (I don't really), Eddy Burback did a great video on how late night comedy changed during quarantine, that shows clips from Conan's one-man audience shows.
On the Steve Martin episode of the Muppet show the laughter is by just a small group of people. There's one guy who really stands out. It kinda reminds me of "onion bubs" on Homestar Runner
One thing I find interesting about Scrubs: The show didn't need forced laugh tracks but it didn't always silently continue after a joke was made either. Rather the show used instrumental auditory clues like a swing over a guitar. That doesn't seem forced at all yet also highlights a joke
Scrubs is always mocked for their phycial and cheesy comedy but the actual things happening are more realistic and dramatic. But Friends, HIMYM, BBT? Ugh garbâge
Scrubs is just a well written show all around. Comedy and tragedy intwined so well, you really forget about your worries and live with the characters while watching.
Just my opinion but also fun fact: The best line in parks and rec was not scripted it was when leslie is sick and Andy goes " leslie I looked up your symptoms online and it says you have network connectivity issues"
Dani-Claw What about season 1 and a lot of season 2,season 1 tried to be the office so bad that it was bad for the first and second season, when it became its own thing it was great.
@@willmelucci2989 even the office had a rough start with it's first season. there was supposed to be an actual spin off of the office called "the farm" about dwight's family but it never took off :( the pilot was supposed to be the episode where they inherit his aunt's farm. eve if it turned out bad i still would like to see more schrutes
How I Met Your Mother wasn't actually filmed in front of a live audience, but they showed the filmed episodes in front of an audience, and added the laughs from there. Therefore the laughs tracks don't pause everything going on, and just stay in the background
When I think of the episodes and the jokes, I don't remember the laugh tracks at all... But Friends on the other hand... I love Friends, but fucking hell
@Tim Portantno they did it because a lot of their jokes included cut away scenes for the joke to land (like when they go back in time) so to film infront of a live audience wouldn’t make sense since the jokes often depended on the editing (voice overs, cut aways, musical numbers etc)
I agree that friends probably would've been better without a laugh track but them finishing the finale in front of a live studio audience was so heartwarming and you could see how rewarding it was for them.
@@mattdaemontargaryen5256 because it was written with one in mind, yes. If it weren't, it could have had a lot more running time, whether it would have been used well is a hypothetical but yes
The laugh track probably gets in the way of the acting as well. The actors know they have to pause after a joke has been said to make room for the laugh track which probably takes them out of what they’re doing. Sort of putting a barrier between them and making their character feel real.
most shows with a laugh track record in front of live studio audiences, so it's not like they're waiting in silence. It's like when a stand-up comedian tells a joke and they have to wait for the audience to calm down a bit to continue. Its all in good fun I don't think the actors mind as much as you may think. Actors, especially in comedy, are stoked when people laugh at the jokes because it means they're doing something good. An actor should always be able to go in and out of character easily and not let outside noises or distractions take them away from the character. If they can't do that then they would be limited in what they would be able to perform as an actor. That's just a basic requirement for anyone hoping to pursue acting.
I don't know about the actors, but it definitely felt a bit unnatural to me. Like, in Friends, whenever Chandler made a joke or a hilarious comment, he would pause for a while to make room for the laugh tracks. It felt weird to me cuz that doesn't happen in real life. Just my opinion, though.
@@thebombspayloadisexposed do stand up comedians also feel unnatural to you? I feel like people don't realize that these shows are ACTUALLY recorded in front of an audience, and they just replace the audience laughter with a laugh track.
@@caliorbustarika3310 You definitely make a good point, but stand up comedy is very different from TV shows. People who attend those shows laugh when the comedian, you know, tells a good joke. In sitcoms, the audience, whether live or whatever, laughs at the weakest attempts at comedy and it sucks.
Schitt's Creek is definitely a different beast. I grew to love the characters as (most of them) moved away from caricatures into actual people, but it was never LOL funny that often. Still one of my favorite sitcoms. (Though The I.T. Crowd is close to G.O.A.T.)
It's certainly not a regular comedy. I once watched the pilot and gave up on the show. A couple of years later I thought that I was maybe missing out on something because of the good ratings and gave it another try. It needs some getting used to but it's an amazing show. It's definitely a comedy but it's more about feelings than about laughter.
Young man, you have officially earned my subscription, despite the fact that I'm probably older than your parents!! I grew up watching "Dukes of Hazzard," "Night Rider" and "the A-Team" and I haven't had cable TV since the early 2000s (by choice), aside from when my wife and I rented the 2nd floor of her brothers place which had cable TV and WiFi, when I was in my 30s, but considering the fact that we lived in Southern NC, by Carolina Beach, Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway, I spent most of my free time kayaking, fishing, flounder gigging (at night), clamming, crabbing and doing all sorts of outdoor stuff... I only really watched TV before bed, if my wife had the TV on, however, I am familiar with these early 2000s shows, as my ex used to watch them sometimes, so I remember Malcolm In the Middle, Big Bang, 3rd Rock, Frasier (which my Dad used to watch in the 90s/early 2000s, and even he met the old guy, who played Frasier's father, at a local restaurant/tavern in person, in the Chicago-area on a few occasions, but I digress). I really appreciate the time you spent breaking these shows down, joke by joke...minute my minute. I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into what you do, and I would certainly like to see more of this! Kudos to you, sir! I look forward to viewing more of your analytical content, which I find quite fascinating! Kind regards.
Hey, you might be new to this whole internet thing, but maybe don't go around telling kids on the internet that you're older than their parents. It comes off as weirdly creepy if you introduce yourself by your age.
@@LunatheMoonDragon "dont go around telling kids on the Internet that you're older than their parents" - you said that about a like 30 year old adult. Your comment just doesn't make fucking sense, especially since the original comment was just nice.
You wanna know whats really weird? I don't hear laugh tracks anymore. My mind just tunes it out. Every now and then I'll realize there is a laugh track, but I just get so focused on the characters and dialogue that I just don't hear it!
Same; one of my favorite shows is M*A*S*H and due to the setup of the show, it would have been pretty much impossible to use a live studio audience, so they used a laugh track. The other day i was watching it and my dad pointed out the lack of a laugh track in that episode. I never really notice if it's there or not 🤷♀️
I don't know, I watched all the way through Schitt's Creek and the best I can say is that it was alright. I definitely think that for me personally everything Schitt's Creek was trying to do Arrested Development had already done a lot better, but I understand why people really like it.
I feel like laugh tracks had their time and place, but as time went on we found better, less cheap ways of achieving what they did. Malcom in the Middle for example, the creator Linwood Boomer said that they used jump cuts, sound gags, musical cues, and just overall wacky editing in order to capture the "easy energy" that laugh tracks provide. Laugh tracks told the audience that what they were watching is a comedy and they should be prepared to laugh, that awkward moments or offensive statements were meant to be jokes, not to make people uncomfortable or to be taken seriously. Jerry Seinfeld talked about something similar, that the audience has to be in the mood to laugh otherwise they wouldn't no matter how good your jokes are. Nowadays shows no longer need those training wheels and are able to put the audience in the mood to laugh just off of the strength of the writing alone.
2:27 I no joke gave both Parks & Rec and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia a shot because of various GIFs that made them look good and god damn they didn't disappoint.
I used to dislike multi-cam sitcoms with laugh tracks, until I got sick. I ended up in terrible pain, isolated, lonely, and disabled. I put on Friends for noise, I watched it as a kid but had grown up and turned my nose up at it. I ended up loving it *because* of the laugh track. It makes me feel less alone. I especially like it when I'm trying to sleep, when my pain is worst. It helps to have constant noise, between the characters and audience sounds there are very few silent moments. I mean I only watch Friends and The I.T. Crowd but I'm sure there are other acceptable ones. So, I don't mind them existing. They have their place. It's exactly like you said, sometimes you want something dumb that doesn't require much from you emotionally. If there were no sitcoms with audience reactions, I'd be pretty bummed. That's my defense of sitcoms with laugh tracks. (I’m just editing to say thank you for all the well wishes, I didn’t expect that and it has warmed my heart. Since several asked, my disease is incurable so I won’t be getting better, but I can deal with it well now. You’re all the best. Thanks guy.)
I agree sometimes the laugh track helps w comedic timing as well like if they had no pause between the jokes in friends it would be exhausting to watch but the laugh track gives the joke time to be taken in by the audience, also I hope ur better :)
Yeah as Drew points out the reason everyone picks on Big Bang Theory and it's laugh track isn't because laugh tracks are inherently some awful thing, although that might be what theyre thinking, but more just because that show in particular employs a laugh track in the most awful annoying way possible.
Tonia Mukami Thanks I appreciate that! Unfortunately I have an incurable nerve disease so I won't ever get better, but Im pretty good at coping with now so it's all good :)
Wow... I never realized this but you're right! In recent years my family has stopped watching TV, and the house just in general kind of feels lonely or empty when no one's talking and there's no TV on in the background. It's not like we don't watch ANYTHING EVER, though, but I've noticed that it still just doesn't feel quite the same even if we do have a movie or something on. But now that I'm thinking about it, the absence of a laugh track is a weird kind of lonely thing that I never noticed before. Huh
I disagree I understand laugh tracks can be annoying and Very frustrating to deal with but at the end of the day The Majority of the all time great TV shows Needed a laugh track
Specifically “laugh tracks”, maybe, but the laughing in most of those shows are from an audience watching the show live. It’s basically live theater that happens to be aired on tv. The laughing you’re hearing in the background are from people actually watching and laughing at and reacting to the actors, not just the jokes
Avatar: The Last Airbender's episode 'Tales of Ba Sing Se' perfectly encapsulates your point about the juxtaposition between emotional depth and comedy. The show as a whole is a great example of this of course but that particular episode just demonstrates it beautifully- and kind of works as a standalone I think probably
@@nickaroundnite Iroh always hits hard, but the part of that episode that makes me by far the saddest is when Momo is looking for Appa :( When he rubs the clump of Appa's fur against his face ),,,: It's too much...
@@capncookie1110That's why 40's & 50's theatrical cartoons were the best (particularly Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes, and anything directed by Tex Avery for MGM). No laugh tracks needed, and not only way funnier than these "illustrated radio" shows could ever be, but edgier, too.
I feel like Scrubs has become massively underrated in the world of sitcoms in the past 5 years it was an early adopter in ditching the laugh track and having that freedom allowed the creators to use very elaborate visual gags which made it better than any sitcom of the 2000's
I wonder if it has fizzed out of our collective consciousness because the last couple seasons were considered bad. Maybe the game of thrones effect at play?
We had to watch Scrubs in our media study class about 5 years ago and everyone would be dying the whole time lmao Always wanted to fit two episodes into class. Fuckin love that show. Criminally underrated and I still reference it to this day.
I'll be the odd one out here and say that as a non English speaker, laugh tracks gave me contextual clues on what the English speaking world found funny and what jokes were supposed to be like in English. It also helps to have Friends on in the background when I'm anxious because the sound of people laughing always picks up my mood
i have an interesting addition to this theory of laugh tracks and the evolution of comedic digital entertainment! i think since a lot of people from millenial to gen z are online, youtube and tiktok are obviously some of their main sources of entertainment. in a way, i feel like laugh tracks have been replaced by strategically placed edits? certainly there are youtubers who use their edits to only enhance how naturally funny their videos are, but then there are others that overly edit their content in order to create humor where naturally they're just...not funny...at all.
I feel like what you described about real moments is a big part of why I go back to Scrubs so often. The humour is absurd and there's a lot of jokes in there. But you do genuinely care about the characters and what happen to them. Scrubs has brought me to tears so many times, through laughter, tragedy or simply because a moment was really touching and beautiful. I'll always love it.
I feel like with Schitt’s Creek, it’s one of those shows that as you watch more and get more involved with the characters, things get funnier and you start to like the characters more. At first watch, I wasn’t that impressed, but now it’s one of my favorite shows. I think Dan Levy said in an interview somewhere that it wasn’t necessarily supposed to be a comedy but more of a drama with comedy, so I think that explains why it feels slower with the jokes than other shows.
I totally agree! the character development over time adds such a nice layer of investment that makes the show so much more enjoyable to watch and rewatch
I literally just commented this - SO TRUE!! Schitt's Creek just doesn't fit well with the other shows on this list in the sense that the other shows are more 'quick' comedy whereas with Schitt's Creek, understanding the characters and following their development greatly contributes to the humour of the show. I am a big fan of Schitt's Creek, it makes me laugh and cry at the same time lol
I fell in love with Schitt's Creek too, and it was surprisingly quickly. I can't say that I love it more than f.e. IT Crowd and MITM, but it has a special atmosphere and warmth, it's really upbeat, and I don't think it's that dramatic. I watched 'Best in show' not long before that (with Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara), and it was soooo good as well, and thanks to it I can clearly see that Schitt's Creek was so great to me thanks to them for the most part. Episodes, directed by Dan Levy (I think they were mostly in S04 or S05) had a different feel, they were slightly tedious, wacky and very self-centered. I didn't know until after the show that the actress, playing Twyla, is actually his sister, and I wished she was flashed out more. But anyway Schitt's Creek made the beginning of the lockdown much more bearable for me, and I'm really thankful for it.
This might be blasphemous to say, but I'll never know because I haven't watched Schitt's Creek: that's actually how I felt about HIMYM when it aired; I'd seen a couple random episodes and they were . . . eh? They didn't do anything for me at all. It wasn't until I watched the series in order and saw the way the jokes built up through episodes and how they hit harder the more you know the characters. (That being said, I watched the first season or so of TBBT in order and in random episodes and it never got funny.)
YES! schitts Creek is a creeper. I watched the first 3 episodes when they came out and didn’t touch the show again for a couple years when it hooked me
I think an issue with including Schitt’s Creek in a video about efficiency in sitcoms is that it’s not trying to have that kind of efficiency with joke after joke. Dan Levy, the creator, has talked about discussions with his dad, Eugene Levy who’s also on the show, about joke frequency. Eugene wanted a much more sitcom-y approach with nonstop jokes, but Dan decided to let there be more jokeless moments and let the characters speak for themselves. It’s very much the kind of show that gets funnier and funnier as you continue watching because you’re getting to know the characters and each of their individual unique traits (which may not be clear to someone just watching a few episodes). Loved the video, but perhaps a different show would have fit into this experiment better.
I completely agree. I don't think it fits with efficiency in comedy for similar reasons. It's also hard to isolate one episode or another as an introduction to the show. When I tell people they should watch it, I typically preface it by saying 'since the episodes are so short, you'll need to watch a few in a row to really get a feel for it.' I think a lot of the best things about Schitt's Creek are that it can be really funny without written jokes, if that makes sense. Sometimes just the situation itself is hilarious, like in season 2 when David is helping Jocelyn at the Blouse Barn. There weren't any real jokes written for that scene, but the dialogue, delivery, and situation together add up to something that's very funny.
yeah, i really feel like Modern Family would have fit better, it's a show where you can watch a few episodes on their own, and you will know the characters.
Definitely. Schitt's Creek is such a beautiful show besides from being just funny. You see how characters grow through seasons. Infact personally, I'd not consider Schitt's creek having MORE of a comedic approach than umm say having one of yk life lessons thingy. I mean I learned a LOT from the show. When Alexis get's her degree it made me super proud or when David was finally able to let down his walls with Patrick, it was so heartwarming. Maybe I'm biased because of the phase I was in my life when I watched this show, but regardless, Schitt's Creek holds a very special place in my heart.
i'm really not surprised that schitt's creek scored lower in terms of frequency because its comedy is a lot quieter than other shows. there are things that a character will say that isn't even technically a joke but the delivery is so good that it has me rolling anyway. like maybe it's really easy to make me laugh but schitt's creek is one of my favourite shows because the jokes are always delivered well instead of frequently.
I watched the first ep of shitts creek and didn't touch it for months. decided to go back to it and ended up binging all of it. it's such a well-crafted show that it made me cry a couple times. i loved every character in their own way. definitely one of my favs.
When I recall How I Met Your Mother, i never remember that there is a laugh track. And rewatching it’s not that jarring. Then I read that the laugh track is actually overlayed, so there is no pause for laughter. Which is the BEST format to use a laugh track. It’s a lot more natural. It makes it feel like you’re actually laughing along with the audience.
What he mentions about needing to get emotionally invested in the characters is definitely true for Shitt’s Creek. Not satisfying if you watch 3 random episodes but the whole series together is incredible
It’s definitely a show that gets better the more you get to know the characters, then even going back to old episodes is more funny and satisfying. I don’t disagree with Drew’s opinions about it but it’s definitely more of a character-focused slow burn in comparison to the other shows
If you want a Single Camera Canadian comedy that has a ton of jokes with characters that are easy to buy into and a heartfelt attitude, you should go for Letterkenny instead.
The first time I watched that episode I cried laughing and that crescendo at the end is one of the funniest things ever put to TV, the way the chaos of each character explodes into an ending is so beautiful
You know the writing is good when the episode builds up to a point where just Moss saying "Yes miss?" is absolutely hysterical. (also I'm very late to this video but to everyone just now discovering Matt Berry bc of WWDITS, he was in The IT Crowd and he's amazing)
i feel irrationally angry watching that show. full house wasn’t anywhere near as stupid so how are you going to make a sequel and it be *so,so much worse*
Oh my goodness THANK YOU. everytime my sister watches that show I complain to her about the incessant amount of times they play the stupid laugh track or applause when something barely even cool happens. There's never enough time for dialogue because they WON'T. STOP. LAUGHING. it's so annoying
I remember loving it when I was like 11. Then, I came back to it years later and realized how stupid it was. I could NOT HANDLE the stupid laugh track, the show has no substance. I had no taste back then smh
One show that never needed a laugh track was MASH. The tv execs at the time forced it into the show, however the show's producers were able to convince the executives to not have any laugh tracks while the characters were in the operating room. The UK version is better because the laugh track was removed completely.
UK version was the one distributed in Czechia in 90's, maybe because we weren't used to laughtrack at all. It was really surprising and confusing to hear the US version for the first time. Laughtrack is really unnecessary in this show (and should be discarded in all of them).
Most Americans just aren't able to appreciate UK humour. I'm always looking to find American Sitcoms that are entertaining to a UK sense of humour but there really aren't many. The jokes in American shows often seem silly or there is a lot of slapstick.
@@custardavenger I disagree, a lot of Americans watch non-American shows and movies. I didn't have a TV growing up but my mom would play AbFab and Alan Partridge on her computer and we all loved it. Whatever Hollywood churns out doesn't determine everyone's sense of humour
schitts creek, to me, is exactly as you were talking with the hbo shows. emotional and deep yet funny at the same time; however a much quieter comedy than a typical sitcom. definitely worth another shot!!
I also feel like it very much would not benefit from watching a handful of episodes at random like this. It's ultimately very episodic and a fair amount of the humor is built through call backs and recurring gags/inside jokes.
I had a hard time getting into it when I would watch random episodes with my sister, but when I sat down and watched it in full I got so much more out of it and its one of my fave shows
It's also a show you *have* to watch in order. The characters develop and change as time goes on - it's really beautiful crafting of characterization. So so *so* not a show you can just pick 3 random/different season episodes and watch.
Parks and Rec is awesome. No laugh track, every character is so unique, jokes are well thought out, and the show has heart and moments to connect deeper with the characters.
I don't get it. I tried. I really did. I love the Office and heard this was a show in a similar style. I watched the first 2 seasons. The only thing I laughed at was Andy living in the ditch. That was it. I did not laugh a single other time, and I kept waiting for it to get funny. It just felt like everyone was trying too hard to be funny, so nothing was funny. Like it was trying so hard to be The Office, but was only a poor imitation of it. I really did try. I wanted to like it, but it was just not funny to me.
@@bunny_0288 that's fine, humor isn't universal to everyone. I feel the same way but about the Office instead where I cannot find it funny at all. I really think it comes down to which show clicked with you first but they're still very different styles of show, so I would never just assume people who like one would automatically like the other.
It was a great show, all except for the last couple seasons. It really started to get dumb at the end. Could have done without 'what's-his-name' becoming a kid's show star, and things did go down hill after Rob Lowe left. And Leslie Knope was probably the most annoying character EVER. I hated her.
I found that the enjoyment of a comedy show was really increased when watching it with people of a similar sense of humour. I watched Brooklyn 99 with a couple of friends and we had a great time. I wouldn’t watch it on my own because it was such a good shared experience.
The Golden Girls and The Nanny had a live audience and you can tell they were not laugh tracks as it was genuine and the shows were and still are hilarious. If, they did use laugh tracks I did not notice.
This is the same with the IT Crowd! It’s always good when there’s just one random person who laughs and idk I feel like it adds some character to the show
It's weird indeed. Everywhere I comment, people tell me how much they love me and my videos. Sometimes it is annoying. But right now it would be okay. So say something nice about my content, dear ken
I feel like the "jokes hit harder when you care about the characters and world" goes the other way as well, you can often come to care about a character more if they can make you laugh.
TindraSan Yep, Modern Family is just like that. It has insanely funny moments, but then there are these really heartwarming moments that’s make you love the characters and actually care about them
that's what works in Succession. the characters are all horrible people but they consistently make you laugh and leave you shocked by their hilariously absurd actions, so they become endeared to you.
Sorry Mr. Gooden but I'm still not convinced. I think the only way we can be sure of your hypothesis is for you to watch every single episode of these shows and report back with the data. I expect the video soon.
And also he has to watch all of UA-cam's popular videos to compare modern to old and figure out what makes us more interested in these modern things than the old things

okay. i’m gonna do this with shameless (US) right now. i’m curious how many jokes per minute it has. first, i’m going to randomly pick 3 episodes to watch. there’s 122 episodes in shameless. my random number generator has chosen... 41, 68, and 6. 1) 41 season 4, episode 5: “There’s The Rub” this episode is about 50 minutes long, not including the title sequence, recap or end credits. i have counted about 134 jokes in this episode, meaning this episode runs a rate of roughly 2.7 jokes a minute. 2) 68 season 6, episode 8: “Be a Good Boy. Come For Grandma” this episode is about 55 minutes long, not including the title sequence, recap or end credits. i have counted about 138 jokes in this episode, meaning this episode runs a rate of roughly 2.5 jokes a minute. 3) 6 season 1, episode 6: “Killer Carl” this episode is about 50 minutes long, not including the title sequence, recap or end credits. i have counted about 142 jokes in this episode, meaning this episode runs a rate of roughly 2.8 jokes a minute. now averaging this data together: shameless has roughly 2.6 jokes per minute. this makes sense because shameless is considered a “dramedy,” rather than just a comedy. yeah i don’t really know why i did this, or what point i was trying to prove. this took me like 4 hours. covid has got me really, really bored.
Still interesting. More jokes than I'd expect actually since it is very dark humor/drama for the most part. I love the show because its that perfect blend
Schitt’s Creek is it’s own little critter and I love it so, so dearly. I also feel it’s like the parallel universe Arrested Development where all the people in the family are actually likeable and redeemable and grow and change as people. It isn’t necessarily “a comedy” in my mind- yes, I laugh, a lot, and I do find it very funny and entertaining but really it’s just a show that makes me happy and care about the characters. I’m not in it for economy of jokes.

Seriously tho! Like nobody talks about it and every time i recommend it, people are like “what??” That show has such great rewatchability and the jokes hit perfect every single time. The humor is so simple and goofy, too, but it’s not dumb humor like BBT. British comedies really know how to take slapstick and ridiculousness and use them as a tool rather than an excuse or stand-in.
I actually went to a live of the Big Bang Theory and the fact that the actors are THERE, the bloopers and the actors talking to the audience sometimes makes most of the work. You are nervous of being there and you actually laugh at everything (me included and I don't usually laugh easily so I was sorprised too). Anyway I really liked it.
That's pretty close to what I've heard before. Ive read that most of the laughs from the audience were authentic because the cast was pretty good at doing their lines right the first try and so they didn't have to repeat jokes, or in other words, the audience didn't have to pretend they hadn't heard the joke before.
Sometimes I watch The Big Bang Theory with my grandma and we both laugh at the show and then when it goes to commercial we talk about its flaws. Like you sit through these dumb scenes but there's some good stuff in there too that makes it not awful as just a purely dumb show that helps you escape for a bit to laugh at the silly science guys
i’ll always have a soft spot for tbbt. when i was a kid whenever i would go to my grandparents for supper we would always watch it after eating. it’s always great going back and watching it and actually understanding more of the jokes being made
Absolutely. Taste is subjective so it may not appeal to everyone, but most of the hate it gets is based on reductive arguments and snap judgements. It becomes clear that most of the haters never really watched it. Personally, I think it may be one of the best sitcoms of all time. There was never a not funny episode, and every character has a believable arc over the course of the series. Even the additional cast that joined over time only enhanced things. Even the finale is great and there is some good drama in the last couple episodes. I watch TBBT whenever I come across it.
I'm pretty sure it was invented even WITH a studio audience because most of the shows aren't actually funny enough to make the real people laugh, so they edited it in later. I have no source or proof of that claim.
I can totally see how it made sense in 1950, when everyone went to see a play or a movie with a crowd, you hear laughter, so no laughter at all might seem eerie, like you're watching a play by yourself. What's insane to me is that it lasted long at all, let alone SIXTY YEARS, before people worked out that if comedy movies don't need laugh tracks, maybe - just maybe - comedy shows aren't improved by them either.
Bojack is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, it’s so funny but real. It illustrates mental illness and real life issues so well. Like the miscarriage, and bojacks self loathing. You almost forget that you’re watching a show where the main character is a alcoholic cartoon horse.

I want to see a sitcom that starts by saying: “This episode was filmed in front of Dave,” and the laugh tracks are just one guy laughing hysterically.
Sometimes on shows you can pick out one person who's laughing particularly loudly or uniquely. I love it when that happens.
Yes please
that would be so funny omg i want that
One thing I find interesting about Scrubs: The show didn't need forced laugh tracks but it didn't always silently continue after a joke was made either.
Ugh garbâge
Scrubs is the most realistic show about residency ever, because the many dream/fantasy sequences in the show are the result of sleep deprivation.
I think using audio effects actually enhances the humor a lot better than a laugh track, a funny sound makes a funny joke even funnier
@@itsgonnabeanaurfromme yes my dad is an anesthesiologist and the stories he tells me are sometimes WAY too close to something thatd be on scrubs lol
That entire show is just FULL of comedy done right. Not a single episode was unlikable to me
thats actually pretty funny
Chris Pratt is the best at improvising lines. Watch any season of parks and rec bloopers and there’s proof. Very witty one liners
@@Up10tionslay Same, I never thought of HIMYM as a show with laugh tracks until a friend pointed it out
@Tim Portantno they did it because a lot of their jokes included cut away scenes for the joke to land (like when they go back in time) so to film infront of a live audience wouldn’t make sense since the jokes often depended on the editing (voice overs, cut aways, musical numbers etc)
damn, why don’t people do that more often? seems like it would be cheaper AND improve the quality of the shows.
I'm honestly baffled. I genuinely forgot it had a laugh track until he pointed it out in the video.
The "boy who cried laugh" analogy applies to every kids' sitcom ever tbh.

I’m assuming you know that every episode was filmed in front of a live studio audience?
@snygghakan45 yes
Friends is horrendous without laugh tracks.

Angjele Thanks for sharing your insight! You make a lot of good points.

Big Time Rush didn’t use laugh tracks either, but a lot of jump cuts, sound effects, etc...It was hilarious!
But having an audience laughing behind creates employment opportunities . So yeah I wanted to be a professional laugher :-(
2:27 I no joke gave both Parks & Rec and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia a shot because of various GIFs that made them look good and god damn they didn't disappoint.

The laughing you’re hearing in the background are from people actually watching and laughing at and reacting to the actors, not just the jokes

i have an interesting addition to this theory of laugh tracks and the evolution of comedic digital entertainment! i think since a lot of people from millenial to gen z are online, youtube and tiktok are obviously some of their main sources of entertainment. in a way, i feel like laugh tracks have been replaced by strategically placed edits? certainly there are youtubers who use their edits to only enhance how naturally funny their videos are, but then there are others that overly edit their content in order to create humor where naturally they're just...not funny...at all.

Aly Wise exactly I completely agree.
i'm really not surprised that schitt's creek scored lower in terms of frequency because its comedy is a lot quieter than other shows. there are things that a character will say that isn't even technically a joke but the delivery is so good that it has me rolling anyway. like maybe it's really easy to make me laugh but schitt's creek is one of my favourite shows because the jokes are always delivered well instead of frequently.

100%
It’s definitely a show that gets better the more you get to know the characters, then even going back to old episodes is more funny and satisfying. I don’t disagree with Drew’s opinions about it but it’s definitely more of a character-focused slow burn in comparison to the other shows

The first time I watched that episode I cried laughing and that crescendo at the end is one of the funniest things ever put to TV, the way the chaos of each character explodes into an ending is so beautiful

i feel irrationally angry watching that show. full house wasn’t anywhere near as stupid so how are you going to make a sequel and it be *so,so much worse*
Full house is amazing and fuller house is just....too much
One show that never needed a laugh track was MASH.
If you get the DVDs you can watch it without the laugh track.
I’m so glad you included the IT crowd in this. That show never has enough of an audience, and it deserves it.
I agree with this! It’s an amazing show that I love!
Agreed.
Most Americans just aren't able to appreciate UK humour.
I'm always looking to find American Sitcoms that are entertaining to a UK sense of humour but there really aren't many. The jokes in American shows often seem silly or there is a lot of slapstick.
@@custardavenger in English and I just don't think it's funny. Not many people I know think it's funny either
@@custardavenger I disagree, a lot of Americans watch non-American shows and movies. I didn't have a TV growing up but my mom would play AbFab and Alan Partridge on her computer and we all loved it. Whatever Hollywood churns out doesn't determine everyone's sense of humour
schitts creek, to me, is exactly as you were talking with the hbo shows. emotional and deep yet funny at the same time; however a much quieter comedy than a typical sitcom. definitely worth another shot!!
after watching it, it doesn't read as much as sitcom and it's not intended to throw out punchlines
I also feel like it very much would not benefit from watching a handful of episodes at random like this. It's ultimately very episodic and a fair amount of the humor is built through call backs and recurring gags/inside jokes.
I had a hard time getting into it when I would watch random episodes with my sister, but when I sat down and watched it in full I got so much more out of it and its one of my fave shows
I feel if he watched the entirety of schitts creek he'd find it funnier
It's also a show you *have* to watch in order. The characters develop and change as time goes on - it's really beautiful crafting of characterization.
So so *so* not a show you can just pick 3 random/different season episodes and watch.
Parks and Rec is awesome. No laugh track, every character is so unique, jokes are well thought out, and the show has heart and moments to connect deeper with the characters.
so very underrated. I don’t think there was ever an episode I didn’t foster a fondness for
@Grant B. I never heard of it before 💀
I don't get it.

41, 68, and 6.
1) 41
season 4, episode 5: “There’s The Rub”
this episode is about 50 minutes long, not including the title sequence, recap or end credits.
i have counted about 134 jokes in this episode, meaning this episode runs a rate of roughly 2.7 jokes a minute.
2) 68
season 6, episode 8: “Be a Good Boy. Come For Grandma”
this episode is about 55 minutes long, not including the title sequence, recap or end credits.
i have counted about 138 jokes in this episode, meaning this episode runs a rate of roughly 2.5 jokes a minute.
3) 6
season 1, episode 6: “Killer Carl”
this episode is about 50 minutes long, not including the title sequence, recap or end credits.
i have counted about 142 jokes in this episode, meaning this episode runs a rate of roughly 2.8 jokes a minute.
now averaging this data together: shameless has roughly 2.6 jokes per minute.

It's hard to believe that a thing like laugh tracks was ever invented and became popular to begin with.
I'm pretty sure it was invented even WITH a studio audience because most of the shows aren't actually funny enough to make the real people laugh, so they edited it in later. I have no source or proof of that claim.
Tell that to tiktok
I can totally see how it made sense in 1950, when everyone went to see a play or a movie with a crowd, you hear laughter, so no laughter at all might seem eerie, like you're watching a play by yourself. What's insane to me is that it lasted long at all, let alone SIXTY YEARS, before people worked out that if comedy movies don't need laugh tracks, maybe - just maybe - comedy shows aren't improved by them either.
It wasn't "invented," it's a leftover from live theater.
I think Bojack Horseman is one of the prime examples of an incredibly deep story that still has an onslaught of jokes
Bojack is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, it’s so funny but real. It illustrates mental illness and real life issues so well. Like the miscarriage, and bojacks self loathing. You almost forget that you’re watching a show where the main character is a alcoholic cartoon horse.
