Thanks for uploading and sharing this wonderful talk show.
This is a great gift for us, for all Bowie people.
Thanks a bunch for this.
Thank you so much for this. The man that is PERFECTION ❤
I swear, this man's perfection is way too higher than it's allowed on Earth.
You got that right
and yet, he was never arrogant.
That's why he was taken away.
Fantastic sound and voice so strong, marvellous interpretation. Sir David Bowie lives for ever, great Knight of music
My favourite version. x
Nobody could touch David bowie he was simply the best
Well, maybe Prince.
Wow, that song really meant a lot to him, even though he was at that time far removed from Ziggy. Bloody hell, there's no healing...
Yeah five years was one of the few songs from his earlier days that he actually kept performing throughout his career. Perhaps lowkey one of his favorites
He was on a different level but probably more human then most of us.
He transcends human, he was and is a god
This is a wonderfully affected performance by Bowie, just a fully invested rendition of one of his best songs. I've rarely seen Bowie just "mail in" a performance and he just glows here. I also think Dinah's home spun sincerity went a long way with Bowie, inviting him to display his wares. Bowie, like Dylan and all the greats, expressed weariness at being patronized with the same schlock questions. Treated genuinely, like here, and he's a pro's pro. There weren't a lot of times our great musicians chose TV to display their full glory, but Bowie certainly does on this occasion...he's fabulous!
Man, David was hot af at this time.
CHYCKEN4 no always hot
Was about to say, you’re implying he wasn’t always hot, which is clearly wrong...
he was (and still is) the hottest
I've spent months trying to to figure out how he could make him self look so perfect, beautiful, and regal while simultaneously acting affable, and just so adorably dorky. I will always love him. God rest your soul Starman.
It's the personae vs the person, that's all. David Jones was shy and awkward, which is why he created David Bowie. Of course, it helps that he was blessed with a gorgeous face, talent and intelligence, which made David Bowie possible. :)
I saw a t-shirt that said "What would Bowie do?" and I thought only a Bowie fan would get that - and agree that it is often a great question to ask oneself.
beautifully put Tessa so regal and dorky at the same time I guess that was his genius xxxx
Been trying to do the same thing since 1975.
You are cooler than you realize. Cya in 5 yrs
this is David Bowie, that's why.
Always gets me when he sings "News guy wept when he told us that earth was really dying, cried soo much his face was wet, so I knew he wasn't lying' always gives me chills. We are all in his song..still way ahead of his time.🖤🌠
zowie yes we are in his song but many are still drinking milkshake cold and long.
@@andalltheangelssay212 Well said and thought provoking! I guess depending on where my mind is, thats me as well! Probably to the point of brain freeze! Well wishes and the angels say "Hi"!
zowie Five Years makes me cry, as does Soul love...and Rock n roll suicide , I keep listening to those three songs so I’m a bit of a wreck tbh xx😂
zowie I love this 1972 version too ua-cam.com/video/4bcnO3VQ_fc/v-deo.html ...and this 1973 version of Rock n roll suicide ua-cam.com/video/CD1nzOeS6U0/v-deo.html and these two are quite rare versions from the diamond dogs era ua-cam.com/video/qCLX4GXRLO8/v-deo.html. ua-cam.com/video/cZlPTI9wvR8/v-deo.html. (sorry if you didn’t want them, just sharing the love lol 😂💖)
@@andalltheangelssay212 I hear you my friend! I wish I went thru with my comment but felt it was too wordy and was going to mention that song along with Conversation Piece! Damn.. Rock n Roll suicide is as visceral as it gets! That song rips thru me every single time and the more I hear it and older I get I can relate to it and the song becomes new again..I sing it loud, cry it out and the uplifting part towards the end 'YOUR NOT ALONE'! So give me your hand my wonderful friend and keep putting the kindness out there! I had to listen to it just now in your honor! 🤝🤗🙏🌠⚡
I actually remember watching this back in 76. Got home from high school and Bowie was on tv!! Glad I found this clip.
lucky you!!
Lucky you indeed!
All I can say is that I love this man
Me too
Yes Charles he really is something else ain't he!
He sang this in a way that made me feel some type of way
He was just perfect!!! David Bowie, indeed, was the most complete artist of his time! 🖤
song writing of the highest caliber - what a way to tell a story
I forgot about this perfect performance. He's 29 years old here. Such a talented musician. I've always loved him. The music world lost an icon when he passed. 🥲
Beautiful Bowie❤
2021.... Five Years ago...rip David Bowie. xxx...
One of the most engaged Bowie performances ever!
This was my absolute favorite period of David's interpretation of his own songs vocally. Hanging and working with Luther Vandross in 74, contributed to his soulful renditions of many of his previous works.
I'm not being pedantic. Please tell me where to find soulful renditions. I find this better than his original
@@YTPEXPERT Bowie did a soulful version of 1984 on the dick cavett show in 1974 it was brilliant.
Same here.. check the 2nd half of Stay (album track).. fantastic funky jam
This song is disturbing when I think about the Covid pandemic. Five years only? So let's go crazy, and listen to David as much as possible, and let's love him because he is really TMWFTE, a splendid alien ...
his voice never got better than this. also the ultimate 'inclusive' lyrics ever, always ahead of his time in anything. and every performance of the same song was always different.
he was splendid at the zenith of his beauty and art
Wonderful Bowie ❤️
Listen and cry....
Such a strong man.
Thank you so much for posting, I moved to London and later Berlin because of my love for DB. I learnt English listening to his songs, then Lou Reed & Iggy.
And Brian eno
You learned 💖
Learnt english... wondering where youy from
crying like a human
This is my all time , absolutely fav rendition of h8s song. On ziggy stardust is so much faster He can change his tempo, his range, the very make up of any song. I'm thankful to have been on the earth with him
A consummate artist, song writer and performer.
Great version, so long starman
Brilliant...in its way as good as the stupendous album version. I was so lucky to be a nipper when Bowie and Roxy Music were in the charts.
Well, to me, if a version of this song is good or not, depends entirely on the climax. Here, he sang it rather subdued, and on the album version,
he's more hysterical. Personally, I think the absolute best version is the one on the live album, Stage.
@@SpaceCattttt I'll did out 'Stage' thanks. We disagree a little. In any case the climax is contingent on what gives "rise" to it isn't it. In other words, the end is part of the light-and-shade that is the whole.
@@garymorgan3314 Yes, but David always sang the first half of the song in a very consistent way. He may have emphasized certain words differently for dramatic effect, depending on his mood at the time, but until the song reaches its "We've got 5 years" outro, it's pretty much plain sailing and very simple.
Oh, I know you guys, SHUT UP.
By far the best version period! The feel he puts in to this is unreal.
Is it just me or is the world a lot less happier since Mr Jones passing everyone hates everyone at the moment great performance as usual buddy lot of people on this speck of dust in space still miss you 🙏💙🌈
That was just beautiful. He was so magnetic during this era. Although he was pretty much coked up to the eyeballs during this time, he looked very healthy!
Later describing his state then as being "a blithering idiot." But musically he was amazing, as good as anyone has been and I don't exclude even Mr Plant and Elvis.
Compare him interviewed in 1974 by Dick Cavett, and here in late February early March 1976. The Man Who Fell To Earth was about to be released and he was about to go on tour. Although he said he was stoned throughout the fims production, it's clear it put him on the path to recovery - being in a different environment etc. He'd also move to Europe, probably 1976.
@@hazelwray4184 yeah, 75 he said was the year he can't remember. Took him a few years to get clean. I don't think he completely stopped coke for years. Rumours he was doing it in 83 but had it under control.
I keep coming back to this. And I want to cry he was too precious to be on this earth and too rare to leave it
why are so many from your generation styling yourselves like our generation, demography, cultures and how we grew up ? and listen to fucking rihanna ? and drake ?
Alia DiDondiaa I don’t get your point. Care to elaborate ? In any case I listen to all types of music and all generations I find beauty and art in many things present or past
@@nadinez8103 I didnt get it either ..it took me back! I think he missed the point of this song or he is in that song..who knows? I grew up with Bowie! He revolved around my whole life and still does..For decades of generations!!!!!! I loved what you said and it was very lovely, poetic and kind. Plus you handled it with grace. 🙏👏
zowie I can honestly say I only started listening and obsessing over Bowie two years before he passed away. I wish I’d grown up listening to him but fact is I was born in 1995 but I can honestly say it didn’t matter because art and talent lives and breathes through generations and the fact that someone was unlucky enough to not be around the time he was in his prime says nothing. Good talent lives through and I was lucky enough to dive deep into the Bowie and at one point I actually felt like I was there in the 80’s! I think he has that thing that not too many have and everyone can relate to or be infatuated with and that’s just that .
I love it, fucked up or not David Bowie always killed it. R.I.P David one of the very very best ever.
"Ooh ooh ooh, yeaaah!" David Bowie 1976
Breathtaking.
The best version
I prefer the live "stage" version. I like the way he sang '...and i felt like an actor...'
Loved bowie since i was 14 and always will.
Agree...plus he looked incredible
I'm glad they put it back on youtube, it disappeared for awhile.
Best version ever. So frockin good.
Magical above in the universe he is waiting for us bless his heart his songs are divine beautiful past present future all to the moon davidbowie you always be the best loveyouforever
that organ/synth drone is a frelling amazing addition to this tune
This even beats the old grey whistle test version. I just love this!
The fact he played......"5 YEARS" on the Dinah Shore Show" Was
UNHEARD OF. HE PRETTY MUCH DISTANCED HIM SELF FROM
"ZIGGY". AWESOME !! 😎😎😎 Ziggy was the album EVERYONE HAD! Even if you weren't a fan.
Five Years. Today...
A very sad for me. I lived this terrible moment presicely at the time of the press release...I double-checked to find out if it wasn't a fake news...But alas, not. I cried so much at the time while listening to his discography, album after album until late at night...
Thanks David for eveything you brought to millions of followers.
So do I honey bee.... with l lost paridises from Christophe,
Same. I miss you so much, David
The people who said it was fake with certainty when it wasn't made it so much more upsetting, that uncertainty, it was awful.
Still my fav' ❤
Miss you so much..
While we give crits, he did all his being could and I'm grateful and exceedingly joyful! Thanks brougham Jones
Huge fan from long ago due to my older brother and his friends being such big fans in the 70's - Was turned onto a lot of music through them - Awesome days of incredible music, long gone by, but not forgotten... \m/
Favorite bowie track. 🎸
Within the summit of his music, this song occupies a very, very high position
BLOODY WONDERFULL AND THE QUALITY IS REALLY GOOD THANK YOU X
I miss so much truly I do
Wow Sveinbeard! That was absolutely mind blowing! Hard work worth its weight in sapphires if not diamonds. The guitar chords are different than the studio (Jazzier?). His vocals are white hot. There is more conviction and feeling than he projected in the studio. And, BTW, I am sure you'll agree there was no lip synching. Still will always look at the studio version as my "go to" but geez bloke, you earned 6 stars out of 5 for this one!
Man and Michael Jackson was still a baby. David Bowie must of been a influence
Michael Jackson was 18-years old...
TooCooFoYou but not yet into androgyny
He was. Also there's a pic of both in a backstasge of David Bowie's Diamond Dogs Tour in 74.
I love this!!! Didn't think the cut version could end end up being a hymn, almost... beautifully done. I miss you so much.
✨"Give me your hands cuz you're wonderful" for uploading this!!
Many, many thanks from an old Bowie fanatic. Love Sheila

The best version of this remarkable piece
Has anyone else noticed that 5 years of time has been a constant throughout his music?
What are the other songs with references to 5 years of time?
There was a song he did about being 5 years old. It may have been filmed in the late 60’s. He’s acting out the song on a giant birthday 🎂
@@4musiclovers When I'm Five
This song was written in 1971, he’s is singing it in 1976. Five years apart.
I'm surprised he agreed to perform this song in 76. On TV, I mean. Live, I suppose he had to, but wouldn't he rather choose to promote his latest stuff on a show like this?
Whatever. He seemed to get unusually emotional at various points during the performance. There was very little acting going on.
I think he really liked this song himself. It's one of the few old songs he actually kept performing live throughout the years, up until he was older.
Henry Winkler requested it . That's what I read. He was already doing it on the Station To Station Tour in 76.
@@misterapplesyd Correct.
This is one of the sexiest things I have ever seen

Just awesome

I just realized how much I wish I could've heard Lou Reed cover this gem.
Hi Punks
The Fonz requested this song and Bowie & Co. obliged him
He looks gorgeous here without all the makeup that sometimes he used unnecessary.....love u David!!!!!! And please don't let me get a speeding ticket Everytime I put this song in my car....David thank you!!!!
MY BRAIN HURTS A LOT... YOUR BEAUTIFUL...
Juste magique 😍!!!!
Endless chills.
"(High Quality)" - I see what you did there!
I saw this live after a day at high school. Dinah Shore was the shizz in 76 for talk shows& Mike Douglas.
Bowie cover Bowie.
This version is a religious experience. Gospel style
Thank you
I remember the day in was on TV. 1976 I believe with Candy Clark and Henry Winkler who requested the song. Also Bowie did Stay. Great Show.
Tim Morin do you know if STAY was/is on video? If yes, please link.?!

This is the first time I've heard/seen/watched tis version of the song. I dunno, is different, Bowie is mesmerising in in his performance and delivery of the song don't you think?
For me mind, I think TOGWT version edges it
2 Words...
ASPECT RATIO
2 more words....
WHO CARES?
Totally agree. Especially for what we paid for this remarkable clip.
@@Sveinbeard No disrespect but I do care: Any distortion, both aspect ratio and clicking reduces the chance that we will ever find an immaculate high quality version of this clip both in terms of "sound and vision" in the distant future.
I'm still thankful that you uploaded it but personally I would pay attention to it for that very reason. The internet doesn't forget but data gets distorted due to people downloading and reuploading with flaws. This problem is especially true for reuploading a video that goes through a compression process each time UA-cam processes it. A frequent side effect of the nature of working with data that is not losslessly compressed.
In short: Retaining the quality is tricky but thanks anyway!
Somehow Bowie and Dinah Shore just don't seem to gel...but it beats the Christmas special he did with Bing Crosby. Life is strange.
Unfortunately the aspect ratio is messed up.
You can clearly hear that The Ace of Spades by Motorhead was influenced by Five Years

In-fuckin-credible version of Five Years.
2:15 hiding a yawn.
Maybe someone can clean up the audio and make it sound like it was played on a diamond. It was performed on so well here.
Where's the high quality? 🥰🥰
